There are very few people who would argue that a Motorola DVR is better than a TiVo Series3, but let's face it, the price of your cable company's DVR is right. This doesn't stop people from comparing them, and this is one of the best interface galleries we've seen. It shows just about every user interface screen from both boxes side by side so you can really see what all that money is for -- assuming all the great features and reliability weren't enough to get you to pony up the cash.

  • The Times asks: "Does a DVR boost viewing hours or not?"

The New York Times is asking "Does a DVR boost viewing hours or not?" and now, we are asking "Does a HD DVR boost your high-def viewing hours or not?" May seem like a silly question 'cause everyone knows a DVR allows you to watch what you want, when you want. Therefore, most people watch less TV because there isn't as much surfing happening. But does a HD DVR really increase the amount of high-def content you watch? Probably not, as channel surfing is a lost art of the nineties, when cable was everywhere and no one cared about resolution. There wasn't a programing guide or DVRs, so people just surfed and life was good. But TIVO, Replay TV too, changed that practice and now surfing is just something you will tell you offspring about. We are assuming that your DVR is filled with both high-def and non-HD content and that you don't have time to surf anymore. We know for a fact that you don't record Tour-de-Gorge and shows like that must thrive on people just tuning in out of curiosity. So if surfing is gone, how much non-HD content do you just happen upon anymore? So we ask once again, does your HD DVD boost your high-def viewing hours or not?

Oh how people love to hate Comcast's current HD DVR box - the Motorola 6412. Things are in the works to give their customers another option though. Comcast is about to start beta testing their own high-def TiVos. There aren't many details about the equipment as they are still in their early stages. There are some details about pricing over at this thread at AVS Forum and it seems that the TiVo service is going to be an extra charge on top of the DVR service fee. Hopefully Comcast gets these things out quick though as we know many of you would love to get rid of your Motorola 6412 even if it costs a few more bucks.

I wrote a post months ago about how I loved my Motorola 6412 from Comcast. Well, I've had it for months and I'm ready to throw it out the window. A bunch of readers left comments on my original posts about their complaints and I feel for you all now. Last night, the DVR didn't record the last 8 minutes of the NBA All-Star Game. Why not? It started on time and it did not go into overtime. These things are just dumb devices that go off of the programming guide, but still this is very frustrating. The box is slow and "clumsy." It will drop the sound once in a while requiring the box to be unplugged. Personally, I can't wait for those new Panasonic DVRs that Comcast is suppose to pick up soon. Anyone else out there feel the same way?
