Sega crept down Japan's chimney and left a special something in the nation's stocking (apart from Phantasy Star Zero): a March 5 release date for its Etrian-Odyssey-a-like RPG, 7th Dragon. They also distributed new screens (here) and a short battle video (past the jump). But wait, there's more! Those who pre-order the title (in Japan, natch) can get their hands on the above "Dragon Chronicle" booklet, which comes with a soundtrack CD. It's not the most attractive bonus we've laid eyes on, but it does perform a neat function, aside from containing developer interviews and character sketches. Those who examine this closely enough will be able to find hidden codes within, which in turn unlock concealed items in the game -- a bit like Ni-no-kuni: The Another World's custom spellbook, if not quite as integral to gameplay.%Gallery-33401%

The worst bit about big industry events for impatient bloggers and readers? The game assets. Oh Lordy, the assets. An absolute landslide of screens, usually scattered about across, ooh, dozens of pages. But not at DS Fanboy! Not on our watch! Because we wub you, readers, we've collected a big old stack of new screens for your viewing pleasure and placed them all after the break of just one post. This post, in fact. From the well-known to the obscure, we'd be amazed if there's not at least one game that appeals to everyone past that line of blue text. Mario & Luigi 3, Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time (right), Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel, Shining Force Feather, and Picross 3D is only scratching the surface, so make the jump!

The doors just swung open on the official site for 7th Dragon, Sega's new RPG with an all-star development team. This trailer appeared on the site, and though it tells us little about the actual game, it's a classy debut, complete with lots of churches, gothic architecture, and graveyards. The game's chibi characters make a few appearances, contrasting nicely with the sinister surroundings. Also over at the site, a couple of the character classes (a male Fighter and a female Mage -- remember that 7th Dragon uses preset characters, like Etrian Odyssey) are profiled; you can view the other five classes here.[Via Siliconera]

  • 7th Dragon is Sega's umpteenth DS RPG

Sega evidently has some sort of addiction to releasing RPGs on the DS, and it's one vice we wholly approve of. Not content with "only" Sonic Chronicles, Phantasy Star Zero, Shining Force, World Destruction, Blazer Drive, and Infinite Line, the House of Sonic has now announced 7th Dragon, a brand new RPG due out in Japan next spring. The game pits humans against various dragons and other scaly beasties in a battle for the woooorld, and has one heck of a team behind it. Composer Yuzo Koshiro (Ys I, Ys II, Revenge of Shinobi, Streets of Rage, both Etrian Odysseys) is on board, as are producer Rieko Kodama (Skies of Arcadia, pre-PSO Phantasy Star games) and Etrian Odyssey director Kuzuya Niinou. The latter's influence on the project seems especially obvious, as a lot of 7th Dragon's proposed features are reminiscent of an Etrian Odyssey title. Battles are command-based, characters are created by the player, there are seven classes (Rogue, Mage, Fighter, Princess, Knight, Samurai, and Healer, each with elaborate skill trees to navigate), and the action takes place on the top screen, with a map depicting who controls which territories on the bottom.[Update: typo]Source: Full scan from FamitsuSource: Translation work

  • Sega teases: 'We're making RPG now!'

And we're writing post now! A new, Japanese teaser website has surfaced in Sega's online realm, promising an unnamed RPG amidst some spinny flower things and what looks to be an angry, somewhat angular dragon. We haven't found much use for the page, other than sticking it in the background and listening to the wonderfully retro music. A NeoGAF user has also pointed to a graphic allegedly leaked from Sega's Tokyo Game Show page, which seems to imply that the DS game will be called "7th Dragon" and feature a cavalcade of ultra-cute characters. We're certainly intrigued, but part of us would simply prefer to continue living the lie: it's Skies of Arcadia 2, and it's out tomorrow.[Via NeoGAF]
