973,086 iOS devices were jailbroken in a single weekend thanks to Absinthe 2.0, which was released on Friday. Chronic-Dev, one half of the Jailbreak Dream Team tweeted the announcement yesterday, adding that 211,401 of those freed were third-generation iPads. If you want to loosen your own Apple-branded handheld from the clutches of Cupertino's control, then the warranty-worrying software is still available -- with the promise that it's so easy, your grandma could do it.

This is super good news for the jailbreak crowd. GreenPois0n Absinthe 2.0 is out for iOS 5.1.1 untethered jailbreaking enjoyment. Absinthe is an easy solution for jailbreaking, and going untethered is pretty awesome. Excellent work by Chronic Dev Team and pod2g. Absinthe works on A4-powered devices and A5 ones, like the iPhone 4S and new iPad. It won't work on the newer iPad 2, however (thanks for pointing out the distinction -- the newer iPad 2 uses a different chipset). JailbreakUntethered has explanations on how to get this going on your device, so if you've ever wanted to try jailbreaking, it's never been easier. [Via BGR]

Absinthe's "so-easy-your-grandma-could-do-it" jailbreak tool just got an update to version 2.0, enabling support for a handful of Apple portables running iOS 5.1.1. Absinthe 2.0, which was developed by the "Jailbreak Dream Team" (Chronic-Dev and iPhone Dev) joins Redsn0w's tool, and will support all iPhone and iPad versions, with the exception of iPad2,4 -- the most recent iPad 2 variant, shipping with a 32nm A5 chip. The jailbreak tool can also be installed on iPod3,1 and 4,1 models. Assuming your iOS device is up and running with firmware 5.1.1, you can hit up the source link after the break to get your download on. AppleTV (second gen) users can get in on the fun too, with the latest version of Seas0npass for 5.0.1.

When the Absinthe A5 untethered jailbreak solution hit yesterday it opened Apple's iPhone 4S and iPad 2 for more creative uses by their owners -- as long as they were on OS X. Now the team has returned with a version of the tool built for Windows users who enjoy iLife mixing and matching. All the usual restrictions, warnings and directives apply, but you know what you're here for -- hit the source link below to download a ZIP file straight from greenpois0n's servers and get going, or check the other links for more information on the exact steps to follow.[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

After months of work, Pod2g, the iPhone Dev Team and the Chronic Dev Team released the untethered jailbreak for the iPad 2 and the iPhone 4S. The jailbreak tool, Absinthe, is compatible with the iPhone 4S running iOS 5.0 or 5.0.1 (9A405 and 9A406) and the iPad 2 Wifi/GSM/CDMA running iOS 5.0.1. The jailbreak tool is available for Mac owners and can be downloaded from greenpois0n's website. A Windows version is in the works. Once you have Absinthe, the jailbreak process should take about 15-20 minutes, but it could take longer as greenpois0n is swamped. If you have any problems, you can hop onto IRC ad connect with the experts at #greenpois0n on http://irc.chronic-dev.org.

  • Ask Cryptic: Iconic costume pieces in Champions Online

It's not surprising that there continues to be a lot of questions regarding customization and variety within Champions Online in each week's Ask Cryptic. Anyone who has played City of Heroes is bound to wonder the same things about Cryptic's newest MMO. This week there aren't any groundbreaking revelations about game mechanics, but a lot of little interesting answers. The one answer we find most interesting pertains to costume options related to important characters such as Defender or Jusiticiar. Forum poster Belstaffar asked, "Will heroes like Defender and Ironclad have unique one of a kind costumes, or can I make a fan boy hero that looks similar?" Which we fond to have a fairly surprising answer. The lead character artists Absinthe tells us that while iconic piece of their costume -- such as Defender's helmet -- won't be wearable, certain other costume pieces will be available to players. This makes us wonder if we'll see supergroups that all dress similarly to specific characters within the game, acting as a sort of "Defender Force" in roleplay terms. We certainly hope so, because nothing say cool like coordinated costumes.

  • The USB Absinthe Spoon mixes virtual hallucinations (and nothing else)

People will tell you that the USB Absinthe Spoon serves no real purpose. And apparently, in the modern physical world all grown up since 1920's Paris, it doesn't. But as the neo lost generation of the Metaverse can attest, Second Life is a movable feast where a digital Absinthe Spoon could someday be traded for a pair of wings. No need for a shotgun here, right Papa? [Via GearlLog]
