Adams Media Research hasn't always had the most positive outlook on Blu-ray numbers, but its latest report indicates that despite the current state of the economy and the still-high price of Blu-ray discs the format is continuing to grow, with year to date numbers that nearly double those from last year at around 9 million compared to 4.8 million at this point in 2008. As usual, Andy Parsons of the BDA had a positive quote to give Video Business, since he was "delighted" by the figures, which also included an estimated total of 10.5 million Blu-ray households (including dedicated players and PS3s, no word if laptops played into that figure.) It's another year later, and there've been many more Blu-ray players sold so the growth isn't surprising, but there's also a lot more competition looking for the 1080p crown, but it looks like most are still hopping on the Blu bandwagon.

Adams Cable has been eerily quiet on the high-definition front for far too long, but in an effort to distinguish itself from local competitors Comcast and Blue Ridge Communications, it has just added in eight HD stations in Northeast Pennsylvania. Among the newcomers are A&E HD, Bio HD, CNN HD, Planet Green HD, Fox News HD, Travel Channel HD and HBO Family HD. What is it with these little guys getting it right while the big fellows just rest on their laurels?[Thanks, Joe]

  • Blu-ray discs reach 1.5 million sold, HDM still trails DVD's first two years

As red continues to fade in the format war, an eye turns towards DVD as Blu-ray's most formidable opponent. According to Adams Media Research, while HDM hardware sales are on par with DVD's first two years -- even exceeding them due to the price slashing and pack-ins of the holiday season -- HDM discs have only sold 8.3 million compared to 16.3 million DVD's over a similar time period. While we're pretty sure Netflix has had some effect on that number, DVD is still an even more formidable opponent now, than VHS was in 1997. The good news is that HDM sales increased 9.5 times in their second year, and VideoBusiness' sources report 1.5 million discs sold in 2008. With HDTV penetration continuing to grow, we'll see if Blu can keep up the pace on its own.
