Netflix snapped up the rights to Mowgli: Legend of the Jungle, a film that had been in the works for some time, earlier this year, and now it has a release date and a new trailer. In the trailer, you see the familiar Jungle Book story -- a young boy is taken in and raised by jungle animals, but as he grows up, he grapples with the fact that he doesn't really belong with them or with his fellow humans. Of course this version has director (and Baloo voice actor) Andy Serkis' own spin.

For years, Andy Serkis has been directing his own spin on The Jungle Book, a mature adaptation featuring motion capture technology. But after Disney released their live action version of the story in 2016, Serkis' vision, later re-titled as Mowgli, was put on hold. Warner Bros. initially planned to release the film in theaters on October 19th, but now Deadline reports that Netflix has snapped up distribution rights for Mowgli. It'll be available on the streaming service, together with some sort of 3D theatrical run, in 2019. According to Deadline, it could be the largest acquisition Netflix has made so far for a finished film.

  • Andy Serkis whispers about the devil in this live-action 'Volume' vid

Volume isn't a movie, though it does feature a major film star, a popular YouTube personality and a BAFTA award-winning voice actor. Not bad for the sequel to Thomas was Alone, an adorable video game about basic shapes and friendship. Volume stars Andy Serkis (Gollum in The Lord of the Rings), Danny Wallace (the narrator in Thomas was Alone), and Charlie McDonnell (a long-time YouTube star with 2.4 million subscribers). It's a Robin Hood-inspired stealth game set in a technologically advanced future -- and it's out today, August 18th, for PlayStation 4, PC and Mac. It was supposed to hit Vita today as well, but that version has been delayed, creator Mike Bithell announced on his blog.

The follow-up to indie darling Thomas Was Alone finally has a firm release date. Developer Mike Bithell's incredibly stylish stealth-puzzler that hinges on you being heard, Volume, hits PlayStation 4, PlayStation TV, PS Vita and Steam August 18th. Performance capture and voice-over extraordinaire Andy Serkis stars in the game as well, but it doesn't sound like he was ready to make an appearance for the spankin' new trailer below. Given what Bithell achieved with a handful of a handful of colored squares in his last effort, we're pretty excited to see what he can do with something a little more human this time out.

  • Andy Serkis talks mo-cap in Heavenly Sword

Yeah, we're impressed by the emotion delivered by the motion captured performances in Heavenly Sword. Andy "the guy who played Gollum" Serkis talked about his role as Dramatic Director of the game to CVG. Playing the game's villain meant internalizing a different kind of mentality for the actor: "Well, Bohan was this dictator that created his own moral universe where he was right. Rather than just playing an evil guy, you have to sort of believe in what you're doing - most dictators do. So I've been reading about dictators."Unfortunately, it appears that Serkis' skill at acting far exceeds his ability to play games. "I'm pretty hopeless at games," he admits. "I love playing Shadow Of The Colossus, just riding round on my horse looking for colossi. I haven't actually found any yet, though." Andy, one clue to you: look for the moving giant in the distance.[Thanks, Random1448!]

Some of you may know Andy Serkis as the fellow who voiced the beyond-logical-description character Gollum in some movie about rings and lords... Pride and Prejudice, methinks. There were lordly people in there and much exchanging of rings. We kid, naturally. Anyway, it's pretty interesting and entertaining seeing this guy get into character for his role in Heavenly Sword. Reminds me of myself, when I get into character at the start of every single day of my life. Get it? No? It wasn't a joke, you say? Now I'm confused.

  • Gollum's meatspace counterpart does PS3 title

After groundbreaking roles playing digital counterparts Gollum and King Kong in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings and King Kong respectively, Andy Serkis, the world's most famous motion capture-actor, is giving video games a shot. He'll be playing the role of the villainous King Botan in Ninja Theory's upcoming PS3 action title, Heavenly Sword. The BBC is running a short piece, with some gee-whiz tech jargon thrown in to wow the unwashed masses ("one of the processors inside the machine is solely devoted to recreating the movement of clothes and hair") as well as some interesting details on Serkis' specific involvement, noting that he's "taking care of all the performance capture, the casting and is heavily involved in writing."Hollywood involvement in games is nothing new (remember Bruce Willis in Apocalypse?) but Serkis is the Marlon Brando of motion capture and, as such, might be able to bring some real talent into the acting backwater that is video games. Then there's the whole question of whether or not that belongs in video games ...See also:PS3 Impressions: Heavenly SwordMajor PS3 titles missing launch date[Thanks, ben]
