Online Apple Store is down (Updated)
The online Apple Store is currently down for maintenance or other work, and possibly lending credence to recent rumors that the iPad mini with Retina display may finally be released tomorrow. We'll let you know when it's back up... and if there are any changes or if someone just flipped the wrong switch. Updated: And the store did come back up later, with the iPad mini with Retina display now available for purchase.

As expected, the Apple Store has gone down in anticipation of today's hosted media event. Can you sense the antici (wait for it)... Apple Store is down... and back up, with no changes
The store's down!* We're not sure why (if I had to guess, I'd say they're updating the listings for bumper cases, since those recently returned to the retail shelves), but we'll keep an eye on things and let you know what's new when it comes back. Meanwhile, don't panic. We want a new iPod nano, too, but you can surely wait a few more minutes until the store returns to normal. *In the United States, anyway. Update: The store is back up, but there are no obvious changes staring us in the face. If you see something we've missed, let us know in the comments.

The store is down... and back up
The Apple Store is down again. And we are, once again, glued to our monitors, constantly refreshing the display. Is the Apple Store nothing but a giant, international Skinner Box? Maybe store outages have nothing to do with WebObjects and everything to do with operant conditioning? What do you think? Is Apple trying to take over your mind? Is this a grand evil conspiracy? Let us know in the comments. Hmmm. Suddenly we're craving cookies. You? Update: After roughly an hour of downtime, the store is back up with no obvious changes. Apple was probably just doing some maintenance, possibly related to their new "Compare Macs" option.
Apple Store down, Waldo still hiding in the country listings (update: new Compare Macs feature)
Judging by the four dozen or so emails that have popped up in our email since midnight ET, Apple has put up its great big Sticky Note™ to mask whatever it is doing behind the scenes. New MacBooks? iTV? A second-generation iPad with three cameras and your choice of seven colors? Or is it just the kind of standard maintenance that gets everyone all worked up over nothing? That's usually the case for non-Tuesdays, but you never know. We'll keep checking. P.S. - No, Waldo isn't actually hiding on the official Apple Store splash page. Sorry. Update: The Store of Mac has finally booted itself back up, but alas there's nothing new on offer. No white iPhones, no Apple-branded frappuccino makers, nada. Update 2: Spoke too soon. Turns out there's a new Compare Macs feature that you can find after selecting an individual system and subsequently clicking on the new icon hanging near the top left.

The Apple Store isn't down, but order status is
Since late last night, the Apple Store order status page has displayed the banner you see above. We're not sure what it means, but it's driving anyone who is trying to look up order status -- my wife, for instance -- crazy. You can still order anything you desire, you just can't find out what's happening with your order. Fortunately, the order status page is scheduled to be back up and running tomorrow, at which time we'll report on any changes that we happen to find.

Don't you love it when the yellow sticky appears? Never quite knowing whether it's going to be good news (usually on Tuesdays) or nothing much but maintenance (usually on Sundays). Hey, the Apple Store is down. Readers: we know, and we hear you! We're curious too, but we should warn you that since Apple isn't keen on launching products in the middle of the night on a weekend, it's probably nothing. Still, we'll be here if the iPhone 5G pops into existence and ruins our marathon of The X-Files. Until then... maybe hold your tip email. Update: It's back and guess what? Nothing new to report. Apple Store is down, could Snow Leopard be coming?
