Cast of Disney's "Lemonade Mouth" starts flash mob at Apple store
It was another quiet afternoon at the Apple retail store at The Grove in Los Angeles, CA -- or as quiet as an Apple store can be on a busy day -- when all of a sudden, a flash mob began singing and dancing the song "Determinate" from the Disney Channel production Lemonade Mouth over Easter weekend. Chris Brochu and Hayley Kiyoko, two of the film's stars, organized the surprise appearance with about 15 of their friends and captured their entire performance on video. The choreographed song and dance number drew a mix of befuddled and delighted looks from shoppers and ended when three unfortunate Apple employees were inclined to politely escort the mob out of the store.
Apple planning May event to celebrate its 10-year retail anniversary
Get your glad rags out, because it looks like Apple's preparing to celebrate the 10th birthday of its first retail stores at the end of next month. Employees have been told they can't request any vacation time in late May, possibly because Apple's planning some sort of event to mark the anniversary. The first Apple Retail Stores launched on May 19, 2001 in McLean, Virginia's Tyson's Corner Mall and at the Galleria in Glendale, California. The Glendale store has even achieved cult status now with the store number designation 001. It is possible that the holiday blackout is due to a new product launch; new Sandy Bridge iMacs are due, and there's always the iPhone 5. However, the iMac doesn't seem special enough to stop all staff going on holiday, and the iPhone 5 now seems more likely for September. The most recent holiday blackouts were for the Verizon iPhone 4 and the iPad 2. If Apple is planning a birthday party for its retail stores, will you be going along? Personal shopping discontinued in Apple Stores
Apple retail stores are typically very busy places. While the staff are very helpful, customers generally have to wait around a bit before being served. Fortunately, Apple has offered a reservation system for services like the Genius Bar and training sessions. Unfortunately, one previously available service, personal shopping now seems to be gone. With personal shopping, customers could make an appointment up to two weeks in advance to have a staff member provide personalized assistance in picking out the right ways to spend money in the store. It's not clear why the service has been discontinued but customers can still get help with selecting the right Apple products. The only difference is that they'll now need to stand in line. Of course, good things are worth waiting for and who doesn't want to hang around the Apple store playing with iPads and Macs for a couple of hours?
Apple will open international Stores early for iPad launch this Friday, iBooks app available now
Apple may be a despot of its own walled garden, but that doesn't mean it's not benevolent. The iPad's international launch on May 28 has prompted the company to open Stores an hour early, at 8AM local time, in order to give its devotees a reprieve from hours of queuing outside. Then again, that little asterisk up there points us to an ominous "while supplies last" note at the bottom, which together with current pre-orders being fulfilled at some unidentified point in June, might force the most impatient to just get to the Store even earlier. UK buyers will get an alternative option thanks to Dixons Group stocking Apple's slate in Currys and PC World outlets, an arrangement that we keep hearing might be exclusive for the first sixty days after launch. Either way, you've been warned, don't be tardy if you wanna be trendy. P.S. The iBooks app has also made its debut outside of the US today, though at present it's limited to just freebie titles, and the iBookstore is still described as "US only." Update: The latest we're hearing is that at least some Apple Premium Resellers will also be getting stock of the iPad in the UK -- worth checking out if other options sell out.
Apple's new online tool lets you check iPhone 3GS availability from the comfort of your own home
If you're one of the hapless folks out there still having trouble tracking down a new iPhone 3GS, Apple is making things a little bit easier on you with an online tool to check up on stock at Apple retail stores. There's a full breakdown of color and capacity, which might seem like overkill to some, but given the fact that stores with stock in all four current models are a bit of an exception (outside of NYC, anyways), we'd have to say that this is just the sort of overkill we need.[Via iLounge]
Apple Store at Otay Ranch opening this Friday
Speaking of Apple's retail plans... Chula Vista in Southern California welcomes the latest Apple Store this Friday, Oct 27, 2006, continuing the growing and inconvenient trend of Apple Stores opening on a Friday morning. According to SignOnSanDiego, Apple will join nearly 90 mostly upscale stores, including REI, Sur la Table and White House/Black Market as well as large sit-down chain restaurants like PF Chang's, Macaroni Grill and The Cheesecake Factory when the Otay Spanky Ranch Town Center Mall opens to the public the same day. For those interested more in the Mall opening than Apple's opening, you'll be pleased to know that the ribbon cutting ceremony will be at the north entrance and Food Pavilion at 9:45am Friday and valet parking is available at the Food Pavilion on the north side and at The Cheesecake Factory on the northeast corner.The usual Apple Store opening day festivities will commence with (presumably unemployed) fanatics camping out in the parking lot the night before and end with the standard fare of special edition T-shirts and a top-dollar sweepstakes.If any of you will be there, we'd love to see your pics and read your reports, as usual!Thanks, Ruben!
Apple Store Concierge on your own Mac
If you've ever been to an Apple store you've probably noticed the launcher-like buttons in the middle of the desktop of all the Macs on the floor. The buttons give you access to that store's Concierge (for Genius Bar and Studio appointments), events calendar, product info and other store info.What if you could have those same DesktopButtons on your own Mac, giving you access to the same information - but without having to actually go to the store? I know, it's actually kind of useless, but sometimes we do things just because we can. DesktopButtons is apparently Docktop, an app that costs a mere $4, so if you like the interface itself, you really should buy it.But what if it's the Concierge you're after? There's a torrent in the wild that will give you your very own copy of Concierge. Once configured with your local store's ID code, it will display the Concierge for that store. As ifoAppleStore points out there's a good chance the software was downloaded from an actual Apple store's computer, so it might not be in the wild for long. But for now, ifoAppleStore has all the details you need to see this all for yourself.
