  • Ubisoft contest asks you to shoot down planes, undress dames

Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WWII is, rather ostensibly, a game about good airplanes shooting down evil airplanes. Unfortunately, a central dilemma faced by Ubisoft UK's marketing department is that only a very small segment of the target audience is sexually attracted to winged machines. Draping some fine women all over the cockpit is as good a solution as any, and much like strapping a floral bikini onto a decrepit corpse, gives the horrors of airborne war that sexy spin. That's not the only thing you'll get out of it, as the classy "Girls of Blazing Angels 2" challenge you to a particularly sadistic website minigame, offering an Xbox 360 Elite as prize. The game, apparently based around Victoria's Secret Missions of World War II, is explained quite simply: "The longer you survive the more the girls of Blazing Angels will strip." Exciting in theory, but maddeningly distracting in practice. You try piloting a plane through waves of enemies while a woman takes off her clothes in a nearby video window! Whoever gets the Xbox 360 in the end will have demonstrated an amazing knack for concentration despite being bombarded by Ubisoft's amazing lack of sophistication.[Via MSXbox World, thanks Scott.]

There really isn't a lot more to say than that is there? Yup, the headline pretty much encapsulates the whole story. We'll just reiterate then, okay? A demo for Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WWII is now available on Xbox Live Marketplace. As with most demos, you will get a chance to sample a small portion of the game. Having sampled the game, you are expected to make a decision regarding the purchase of the full retail game. Ubisoft probably hopes that your decision will be somewhere in the region of "yes." So there you go, download demo, play demo, make decision. Easy, right?[Via Joystiq]

To The Game got their hands on the UK's Box art for Blazing Angels 2: Secret Missions of WWII, Ubisoft's sequel to Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII. Sorry, we just find the subtitles funny for some odd reason. Either way, the sequel has the player undertaking some of the "most dangerous missions in exotic locations across the globe." That's fine, so long as the Achievements are just as easy as the first game's and include the God mode and Heavy Damage codes, as they actually made it fun to play, or less of a chore; we're not sure which. Based on your experience with the first title, would you play a second, exotic locales and all?

  • Ubi rep clears confusion: no online play in Blazing Angels

With all of the confusion surrounding Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII and online play, we're all dying to know if this game is to release with online gameplay. According to a nameless Ubisoft representative, we've all got our hopes up for nothing. Wii-UK received word as much when contacting Ubisoft, who said that the game would feature no online gameplay modes when it releases later this month. Looks like we'll all still need to wait for Pokemon before online gameplay rolls out ...See also: First screens of Blazing Angels on the Wii

  • Internet ablaze with Angels online speculation

Details on Blazing Angels have been thin, and the game's release date was shaky for a long time as well. Given those factors, it's understandable that rumors can sprout from the tiniest things -- like a WiFi logo on a placeholder box at IGN. We've seen placeholder boxes start a ruckus before, but this time there may be more too it than a simple mistake. Blazing Angels was, as far as we know, slated to be online all along. It's not unpossible that we'll see online dogfights, but it may be very, very unlikely. However, this game was originally slated for an earlier release, so maybe we can cross off at least one "very" from that statement. We know online devkits went out, and that with the game's delay ... well, we can definitely understand the speculation.Reggie Fils-Aime said the Wii should be online by Q2. But here's the thing -- that article didn't specify whether we're talking about the second quarter of the fiscal year or the year by the calendar -- and either way, late March is on the cusp. So it's actually more feasible than, say, hell freezing over this afternoon, but maybe only just.

Ubisoft has finally gotten around to release some screens for the upcoming Wii version of Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII. While there aren't as many screens as we would've liked, we're still holding out hope that the updated controls and other improvements being made to the game will add some value. We tried the game when it was on another console, and honestly, it wasn't too great. Actually, it downright sucked. We've included the other screens past the post break.

  • Ten rejected achievements revealed!

Sometimes developers create a huge list of possible achievements for their game, have to narrow down the list, and choose which ones they want to include in the final game. There are some that get rejected because they are either too lame, too dull, too easy, or just too impossible to attain. The guys over Game Stooge put on their detective hats and went searching. They dug up unused achievements that developers didn't put into the game simply because the achievement didn't mesh with the rest. And after looking at their handy work we know why these rejects didn't make the cut. Viva Piñata's "No Incest" achievement would have been a challenge, Blazing Angels' "Victor Over Boredom" would break down even the strongest gamer, and Madden 06's "Press 'A' Button" would be ... wait a second. Didn't that achievement make it into the final game? Anyway, did anyone un-earth rejected achievements that didn't make it into the final game? If you have, we beg you to share with the rest of us.[Via Digg]

  • Tom Clancy infiltrates Euro PS3 launch

Ubisoft's latest release schedule sees the publisher readying five titles for the European PS3 launch, more than half of them labeled with the esteemed Tom Clancy name. The cherished children's author will see some of his more popular works come to life in Rainbow Six: Vegas (which sees the six Color Rangers fight the addictive nature of gambling), Splinter Cell: Double Agent and the latest entry in the Ghost Recon franchise. The last is said to feature vastly improved ghost capturing mechanics. The rest of Ubi's launch lineup is comprised of Blazing Angels and a game you've never even heard of, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion. It seems all good things really do come to those who wait. Perhaps making a clever subject line about PS3's "lift-off" or something would have been better. Oh well. The game is Blazing Angels: Squadrons of WWII and it initially was put on the XBox 360 and was later revealed to be a Nintendo Wii launch title as well. Ubisoft has gone on record and declared the game will also be a PS3 launch title. While there is certainly no dearth of WWII games on any console, this one at least tries to mix it up by throwing you in the air and commanding a squad of spunky fighter pilots. The game will hit PS3's in America and Europe at the same time. Launch. So, that's another surprise launch title out of nowhere. Even though it's a multi-platform release, it's still one to add to the list. If these games keep popping up, there's really a lot of hope for the Tokyo Game Show. Who knows what madness could be unveiled! Now is the time to tell everyone else... what would be the absolute craziest thing that could be revealed at TGS? What would completely knock your socks off? Go all out and yes, sarcasm is welcome.

  • Blazing Angels demo drops into XBLM

A demo for World War II dogfighter Blazing Angels is now available in the Xbox Live Marketplace for the Xbox 360. The marketing hype promises an environment "so real you'll feel like you're the pilot in a famous WWII movie." Wait a minute! Let's do some close reading on that bit o' marketing mummery. When did we suddenly become one more level removed from the actual experience? Today's game audiences can't know what it was like to be a pilot in an actual WWII dogfight and can only know what it's like to be an actor in a movie based on what some director imagined WWII to be. Sixty years from now, when few living gamers will have seen a WWII movie, marketers will be promising games that are "so real you'll feel like you're controlling a famous game based on a famous WWII movie based on a famous historical novel of a famous WWII battle." We tingle with excitement in anticipation of that glorious day. [Via Xbox360Fanboy.com]
