Given the janky, improvised look of many TV shows during the COVID-19 lockdown, you may have noticed that SNL’s cold open last week, featuring Brad Pitt as Dr. Anthony Fauci, looked quite professional. As it turns out, that’s because it wasn’t shot on a smartphone or laptop webcam, but with a prototype version of RED’s upcoming 6K Komodo camera.

  • Paramount files World War Z game trademark

With Paramount Pictures set to finally release its film adaptation of World War Z next year (starring the ever-dreamy Brad Pitt), it's now filing trademarks for lots of associated products. In addition to filings for various undead merchandise (Halloween costumes!), the company has also filed two trademarks relating to video games.Specifically, one trademark was filed for "entertainment services, namely, providing online electronic games," while the other relates to downloadable, handheld and cartridge/disc games. It's hardly surprising that a major film would have a video game tie-in, but we're a little worried about the source material. Zombies? In a video game? Frankly, we're just not sure it can work.

  • Why Bobby Kotick has a cameo in Moneyball: The charitable conclusion

Bobby Kotick has a lot of things, including money, notoriety and a collection of fluffy, collared sweaters, but he also has something most people overlook -- a heart. He's alive, after all, and most living people need a beating mechanism to circulate blood throughout their bodies, and Kotick is no exception (unless he really is a cyborg sent from the future who got lost in the stock market on his way to kill a teenage boy). He also, however, has a sense of compassion, at least a little bit. Kotick has a small cameo (0:17 above) in the coming Brad Pitt movie, Moneyball, and we didn't know why he was in it -- turns out, it's all for charity. Kotick is buddies with Moneyball director Bennet Miller (Capote), who asked Kotick to be in the film. Kotick said yes, but only if Miller made a movie for the Call of Duty Endowment, Kotick's non-profit company that helps veterans transition into civilian life after their service. Kotick doesn't want a credit in the film and doesn't intend to pursue an acting career; he just wanted to help America's veterans. It's downright heartwarming.

  • The Daily Grind: Do you follow industry personalities?

Every field has celebrities of one stripe or another, and MMOs are no different. Some of them start off as programmers, some start as producers, and some start as commentators that later move into an official capacity. Some have a track record of success, some have a big success and a big failure, and some are considered to be solely at fault for anything that goes wrong in a game. But no matter what the background, they're personalities of note, whose words start having an impact on people even when they're not working on a big project. People listen to them, quote them, and take note of their various projects. Especially in light of recent personality-based developments, it's certainly worth asking how much people really follow the paths of programmers outside of playing their games. The MMO industry doesn't follow Richard Garriott like mainstream media follows Brad Pitt, but he still finds ways to be seen even when he's between major projects. Do you follow specific people in the gaming industry, either out of liking what they've done or wanting to avoid what they're working on? Or does the practice annoy you, and all you want to focus on is the actual games they produce?

  • Dark Void film adaptation announced

Preemptively cutting off complaints that it strays too far from the source material, Capcom has announced a film adaptation of a game you haven't played yet: Dark Void, next year's promising third-person shooter from Airtight Games. In line with the agreement reached between Capcom, Reliance BIG Entertainment and Brad Pitt's Plan B Entertainment production company, Dark Void is primed as a "sci-fi action franchise and potential starring vehicle for Pitt." While the parties involved decide whether or not the movie is indeed the Pitt's, someone should probably point out that as far as starring vehicles go, a jetpack is probably the best one. Players will beat Hollywood to the punch and experience it for themselves when Dark Void lands on PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on January 19, 2010 in North America and January 22, 2010 in Europe. Congratulations to Crusty Magic on being the first to comment. You've been emailed a free Battlefield: Bad Company 2 beta code. Click here, for more information on this giveaway. • Video: The unsettling truth about our augmented reality future, starring Brad Pitt

With more and more phones featuring beefy processors, GPS, HSPA data, and compasses, augmented reality apps are ready to take off in a big way. Layar, in particular, is shaping up to be the platform of choice from which to overlay information onto the streets that surround you. This is great for serendipitous discovery of cafes, ATMs, real estate, and even jobs, but at what expense? Recently, we casually joked about the ability to "hunt down tweeps with cold, calculated precision." Now a Dutch crew from Beste Product took up the task by giving Layar and its "Famous People Finder" feature a real-world test on the streets of Amsterdam with the help of Samsung's i7500 Galaxy. The results are unsettling as demonstrated by the celebrities, including Brad Pitt's, reaction to being discovered. Is our near-term future to be filled with people laughing maniacally while pointing their cellphones at each other? The video is in Dutch, but the reaction that unfolds at 2 minutes and 40 seconds is universally human. See it after the break. [Via @Dutchcowboy]

  • Brad Pitt offers advice on dealing with your WoW wife

As part of the latest issue of WIRED magazine and to tie in with the release of war movie Inglourious Basterds, Brad Pitt has contributed his thoughts to a section in the magazine on how to deal with everything from Google-stalking to WoW. The idea of this seems to be updating social rules for the twenty-first century (and not make you look like a jackass). He's responsible for the 'Ask a Basterd' sections which feature fun photography and answers life's insanely important questions, like what to do with your WoW wife if you suspect she is, in fact, a he.Pitt suggests the following should you suspect your 'wife' (night elf, blood elf or even human, I doubt it matters on the specifics) is actually a guy. Yes, he's playing the fidelity card: Should you confront the individual? "Absolutely not. If it's good, don't check under the hood. I say, love her with everything you've got. I mean, she's your wife, man!"What I want to know is, does Pitt play WoW and is his advice based on real experience? Somehow I see him as an Orc ...

Attention Fight Club lovers! You will be delighted to hear about Ten Seconds with Tyler Durden, a free app from OpenSoft Development. Every ten minutes, while the app is running, a quote from the movie pops up on your Mac to motivate you and entertain you. The app has only been tested on OS X 10.4, but it is open source so you can monkey around with the code if you like.I never thought I would be writing an entry on TUAW that would be accompanied with Brad Pitt's face.  Ain't the internet a funny place?
