It's been nearly five years, but that notorious Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion "Horse Armor" DLC is finally on sale. Along with the "Shivering Isles" and "Knights of the Nine" expansion packs, the equine armor is discounted by 50 percent as this week's Xbox Live deal. Keeping with the Bethesda theme, three of Fallout 3's DLC packs -- "Mothership Zeta," "Operation Anchorage," and "Broken Steel" -- are similarly discounted, as well as a handful of Avatar items. There has never been a better week to dress up an Avatar as a Vault 101 wastelander and buy virtual armor for a virtual horse. Head past the break for the full list of discounts.

As the Bethesda blog conveniently points out, the entirety of Fallout 3's downloadable addendums -- from forays into virtual Alaska to intergalactic excursions -- are half off their normal asking price this week. At 400 MS Points ($5) a pop, you'll only be $25 less prepared for Fallout: New Vegas. No worries, though -- we're pretty sure the employees at your local GameStop will happily accept Nuka Cola bottlecaps in place of US currency should you be a few pennies short come October 19. This week's Xbox Live deal ain't too shabby, if you haven't got yourself a copy of Fallout 3: GOTY Edition or already downloaded all of the game's DLC onto your hard drive. Each of the five episodes continuing the adventures of our strong, silent hero (or villain, if you prefer to play the meanie) are half-off this week, just as anticipated. That means the whole lot (usually setting back would-be Wasteland travelers $50 total) can be yours for $25 up until March 29 -- or 400 ($5) each. War never changes, but the cost of doing battle just got a bit cheaper. Watch your head, folks, because prices are falling. Today's Xbox Live holiday deal of the day is targeted directly at DLC for Bethesda's critical and commercial darling, Fallout 3. If you're looking to add more intense VATS-related action to the RPG, each add-on pack is available for 400 ($5) a piece -- a 50% savings of your Microsoft-branded space bucks. New to the Fallout 3 universe? There are five DLC add-on packs for the (already) lengthy RPG. Arguably the most important -- and one you should tackle first -- is Broken Steel, which increases the game's overall level cap to 30 and allows players to continue playing beyond the conclusion. Also, a Game of the Year edition is available in stores, which includes all of Fallout 3's downloadable content -- making it cheaper if you don't already own the game to begin with. • PSN Thursday: More free Batman DLC, Broken Steel

The highlight in this week's PSN Update is that The Bats is back with more free DLC. Also, for Fallout 3 owners not planning to trade up to the "game of the year edition," the single most important piece of DLC for the game, Broken Steel, is now available from the PSN store for $10. For those who don't know, Broken Steel takes away "the ending" of the game and allows the (anti-)hero of the Capital Wasteland to continue their journey with an increased level cap. Check out the full update after the break -- and, sadly, no Trine. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

  • The Digital Continuum: Summertime MMO alternatives

You, much like myself, may have had summer MMO plans a month or so ago. But like many things in life, circumstances changed and both Champions Online and Jumpgate Evolution were met with delays in their schedules -- making any plans to play them over the summer null. It's a bummer, but not all is lost. Another thing I'm certain we all share is our love of gaming in general. I've been thinking of a list of games I plan to play through this summer in lieu of shiny new MMOs to delve into, with an emphasis on filling the void left by a lack Cryptic's and NetDevil's still forthcoming titles. I'm sure I'll play more than just three, but these are the ones I'll definitely play the most of overall.

  • Xbox Live Top 10: Halo 3 and the usual suspects

It's time to check in with the Xbox Live Top 10 again, and Major Nelson informs us folks were pretty much playing the same stuff they've always been playing last week. Snagging the top spot again was none other than Halo 3 (big surprise there), however folks set aside some time to head into the Wastes with a bit of Fallout 3 (thanks to Broken Steel, no doubt). Resident Evil 5 managed to hold onto last place, with the UFC 2009 Undisputed demo also being a hot item for gamers last week.On the XBLA side, people have been enjoying the colorful Space Invaders Extreme, as well as the usual amounts of Hasbro Family Game Night and Castle Crashers. Invading the list (rather surprisingly, we might add) in last place is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, which we guess can be attributed to people needing a fix after seeing the new version.

Those who purchased Fallout 3's latest DLC, Broken Steel, with the intention of actually using it with the Games For Windows version of Bethesda's post-apocalyptic role-playing game, can now do so. As we reported yesterday, purchasers found themselves unable to even install the add-on because of what we now know to be a GFWL digital rights management-related issue. We are unable to confirm reports from the field that Liberty Prime has succumbed to DRM issues and is now targeting friendlies it believes to have illegally downloaded MP3s.

  • Broken Steel Achievements not showing up on Live, fix incoming

Perhaps not realizing that the real achievement is the fun you have along the way, posters on Bethesda's forums are in an uproar about not being credited for the Achievements they earned in the newly released Fallout 3 DLC, Broken Steel. If you experience the same problem, take heart! Bethesda tells us, "The Xbox Live servers don't seem to be fully synched yet with the additional Achievements. Microsoft is looking into it right now so that the Achievements folks have gotten will show up properly on Live (the game awards them, they just aren't showing up right on Live for some reason). People won't lose any Achievements."Patience, friends. Sounds like this will be resolved soon.

Users report that Fallout 3 Broken Steel DLC is, yes, broken on PC [update]

[Update: Bethesda tells us "We're seeing the same error, which is a Games for Windows Live DRM Install error. Microsoft is working on fixing it, and we'll let everyone know once we've verified it."]The last Fallout 3 DLC didn't exactly launch smoothly -- users reported issues with the Xbox 360 version of "The Pitt," requiring Bethesda to release an updated version. The latest DLC, "Broken Steel," came out today, and it's also causing problems for players -- this time on the PC.Would-be "Broken Steel" players are reporting on the Bethesda forums that installation of the DLC isn't working. After the files are downloaded through the Windows Live Marketplace, the installation stops and displays the message "Not a cryptographic message or the cryptographic message is not formatted correctly. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x8009200D)."Bethesda is aware of the issue -- "Dermont" from the company commented on the forum, "I am even getting the same issue." The team is "looking into it."%Gallery-50700%[Thanks, Nick G]

  • Fallout 3: Broken Steel trailer contains big, steel spoiler

    05.04.2009

SPOILER WARNING: Don't watch unless you really want to ruin the ending of Fallout 3! Bethesda has released a trailer for the third -- and only maybe final -- DLC expansion for Fallout 3, Broken Steel, due out for Xbox 360 tomorrow, May 5. We strongly suggest that you don't play the video if you haven't finished the game, since, well, it spoils something big (and metal). If you've finished the game (or just don't care), by all means, play away. The trailer provides a quick glimpse of how the add-on will continue on from an ending that was designed to be the end along with plenty of Brotherhood vs. Enclave laser-blastin' action. Oh, and that something big being generally awesome. In fact, just watching the footage will make the next 12 hours or so before it goes live (on Live) that much harder. We'll just pass the time thinking about what it'll be like to hear the level-up drum roll once again and dreaming of new, sure-to-be-fancy perks.

Bethesda has pinged our Pip-Boys with word that Fallout 3 has been updated to version 1.5. Don't get too excited, all it does is add the Broken Steel achievements and fix a few bugs. So few, in fact, that we can list them here: Fixed issue with VATS calculations not appearing properly for perks (PC). Fixed crash related to altered references between master files. LOD objects render properly when loaded from DLC worldspaces. Fixed issue with companion NPCs not loading into cells immediately after player. Xbox 360 owners will have their Capital Wasteland auto-update the next time they start the game and PC owners can grab the update from Bethesda (Big Download has it, as well). The Broken Steel DLC will be ready to cut out the original game's unnecessary ending on May 5.

Broken Steel DLC makes Fallout 3 endless on May 5

Click for bigger lasers. So, you've taken part in Operation Anchorage and visited The Pitt and you're still hungry for more Fallout 3 content? Luckily you don't have too much longer to wait for Broken Steel, the third -- and largest -- piece of downloadable content for the game, which will be made available on Xbox Live and PC on May 5. Not only does Broken Steel add a new main quest line which, at four to five hours, is longer than The Pitt, but it also removes a lot of Fallout 3 fans' major qualms with the game -- the ending. Broken Steel takes place after the original ending of the game, allowing you to continue to explore the world after the main quest line is complete. It also increases the level cap from 20 to 30 and introduces some new high-level perks, armor and weapons. The original Fallout 3 endgame has been changed, so that three companions will no longer refuse to aid you in your final task. The Broken Steel story picks up two weeks later, with you dealing of the consequences of your actions. Don't worry, completing Broken Steel won't end the game either. The folks at Bethesda haven't moved the finishing line -- they've dismantled it.%Gallery-50700%

Survivors of the Capital Wasteland will need to wait for Fallout 3's next two DLC packs a little longer. GameSpy reports that the follow-ups to Operation Anchorage, The Pitt and Broken Steel, will be delayed until March and April, respectively.A Bethesda spokesperson confirmed to us the information is accurate. Guess this will give us more than enough time to finish the seemingly never-ending Nuka Cola Challenge.
