CBS expands its streaming local news service to Los Angeles
CBS has expanded its local news streaming service to Los Angeles after it debuted CBSN New York in December, giving Los Angelenos another way to find out what's happening around town. The ad-supported CBSN Los Angeles includes continuous news coverage for the area, including daily newscasts produced exclusively for the service, breaking news coverage and live streams of KCBS and KCAL 9.
CBS launches streaming-only news service for New York City
CBS is acting on its promise to add a local flavor to its streaming news service. The broadcaster has launched CBSN New York, its first major local streaming service. The internet-only channel promises around-the-clock coverage of NYC's goings on, with CBS 2 and WLNY 10/55 providing both their usual live news broadcasts as well as hour-long live shows just for CBSN. It'll also provide continuous coverage of any breaking events as well as on-demand streams.
Hulu adds ABC News Live and CBSN to its live TV package
Hulu is adding three more news channels to its live TV package, albeit streaming networks you can watch elsewhere for free. ABC News Live, CBSN and startup network Cheddar are all joining the service.
CBS plans local news streaming starting in NYC and LA

Say hello to CBSN Local, a streaming news service that will show anchored local news coverage to major markets served by the company. The new service follows CBSN proper, a global streaming news offering that delivers national and global news, and CBS All Access, which streams shows like Star Trek: Discovery.
CBS launches 24/7 sports streaming network for news and analysis
Today, CBS launched CBS Sports HQ, a new sports-focused streaming network meant to be complementary to CBS Sports and CBS Sports Network programming. The 24-hour, free streaming network will feature sports news, game previews, highlights and post-game analysis and is accessible through a number of platforms at launch. Along with being able to jump into live programming, CBS Sports HQ visitors will also be able go back and watch previous segments with the network's DVR-like functionality.
CBS All Access has more new TV shows to join 'Star Trek'
After a few delays, the CBS All Access series Star Trek: Discovery is on track to launch September 24th, and the streaming network has a few more shows planned to keep the momentum going. There's no word on any launch dates, but it did announce three new series at the Television Critics Association press tour, along with news that Audra McDonald will join The Good Fight for its second season in 2018.
The first presidential debate broke multiple internet records
It won't shock you to hear that the first US presidential debate shattered TV viewing records -- Nielsen says the broadcast was the most-watched debate ever with an average of 84 million viewers. However, it also pushed boundaries of the internet, too. For starters, YouTube reports that Clinton-versus-Trump was the biggest political live stream "of all time," with almost 2 million concurrent viewers spread across six major news outlets. It was also one of the largest streams in the site's history, and had 14 times more live viewers than during the 2012 debate.
CBS News will feature Instagram Stories in debate coverage
Monday's US Presidential debates are shaping up to be the most easily streamable live TV in history, with options ranging from Twitter and YouTube to Facebook Live and Snapchat. Not wanting to be left out of the party, Instagram and CBS News have announced a new partnership that will make CBSN the first network to feature Instagram Stories in live coverage.
CBS exec: no recent talks with Apple about a TV service
Since Apple itself doesn't have much to say about its long-rumored TV service, we're forced to look for signals elsewhere. In comments revealed just before CBS announced its earnings today, exec Les Moonves once again filled in the gap. Following previous comments that he believes the service is on hold, Moonves told CNN Money that "we haven't had recent conversations with them." That could mean any potential debut is even further off than we thought, although it doesn't seem to be hurting CBS any. CBS reported (PDF) its highest ever revenue for the fourth quarter, while claiming revenue from retransmission agreements is over $1 billion now, and will be at $2 billion by 2020. According to the exec, "something like 40 percent" of revenue his company is getting, didn't exist five years ago.
CBS CEO talks PlayStation Vue and standalone Showtime
CBS just announced its earnings for 2014, including $3.68 billion in revenue for Q4 (all those episodes of NCIS pay off, apparently), but its always-talkative CEO Les Moonves provided most of the interesting information. According to the NY Post's Clair Atkinson, he has confirmed that CBS has a deal with Sony to be on its new internet TV service PlayStation Vue, saying "they're paying more than everyone else" for the privilege. That probably explains why the $20 per month Sling TV is missing the network channels -- for now, "there's a path to negotiation" according to Moonves -- and why Vue may end up being more expensive.
CBS News' iOS app now lets you watch its online-only network
You no longer have to sit at your computer to watch CBS' online news network. The broadcaster has overhauled the CBS News iOS app with both a fresh interface and more video options, including CBSN's live and on-demand feeds. It's now easier to follow a breaking story on your iPhone, or to catch up on the day's events from your iPad. The improvements aren't limited to video, either -- there's more in-depth coverage for both major and developing stories, and full-screen photo galleries give you a better sense of what it was like to be there in person. Yes, you can use authenticated apps from channels and TV providers (not to mention Dish's new Sling TV service) to get similar up-to-the-minute coverage, but CBS News is free. At the least, it won't hurt to give this a try.
CBS takes on HuffPost Live with its own streaming news network
Yesterday, rumors began circulating that CBS was getting ready to launch a digital news network, and well... here it is. Just as Variety had reported, The Eye's new 24/7 streaming channel is named CBSN. But, what is it exactly? Simply put, it's CBS' answer to HuffPost Live, featuring 15 hours of live, anchored coverage on weekdays (from 9AM to 12AM ET), complemented by an on-screen interface with a list of topics being discussed throughout the day. Aside from its original productions, CBSN will also have simulcasts of special reports and breaking news from CBS sometimes, as well as other content from sibling properties like CBS News, CBSSports.com and Entertainment Tonight.
CBS has a digital news channel and it's launching tomorrow
Can't get enough of Charlie Rose and Bob Schieffer on your TV box? CBS is apparently bringing its focus on original reporting to a digital-only news channel starting tomorrow, CBS Interactive head Jim Lanzone announced at the Web Summit in Dublin, Ireland. Re/Code reported the announcement directly from Ireland -- no name was given to the service by Lanzone. However, it looks like "CBSN" is a strong candidate, according to Variety. So, what kind of news coverage should you expect to see on CBSN? Details are scarce thus far, but it looks like live video coverage from CBS News' stable of reporters is on the docket. As Variety reports, "CBS News correspondents Jeff Glor and Elaine Quijano are expected to figure prominently in the new video-streaming effort, though a wide variety of correspondents from CBS News are likely to take part."
