3D theaters? Okay, that's acceptable. 3D HDTVs? Sure, go ahead and waste your dollars inventing something that no one's asking for. But 3D laptops? We're pretty sure the line was somewhere back there, and now it's been decidedly crossed. Acer's Aspire 5738DG (not to be confused with the two-dee Aspire 5738PG) is the company's first portable machine to utilize its 3D CineReal technology, which is little more than a "3D coating" on the display that gives off mind-bending effects when viewed with a pair of polarized eyeglasses. The 2D-to-3D conversion takes place thanks to the bundled TriDef 3D Experience software (meaning that no special GPU is needed), and while we are told that the rig will be based around a Centrino 2 platform with up to 4GB of RAM, the only other information we're given is a NZ$1,999 ($1,484) price tag. Now, if only we could decide if laughing or crying would be the appropriate reaction here...

[Via Pocket-lint]

Acer claims Aspire 5738DG as its first 3D laptop, we worry over the future of things originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 14 Oct 2009 09:36:00 EST. Dutch-based portablegear has managed to get a close-up look at Samsung's Intel Centrino 2-packing laptops, the 13.4-inch Q320 and 15.6-inch R522, and boy are they a beaut. The former's sporting an NVIDIA GeForce G105M and three USB ports, while the latter uses an unknown graphics card, four USB ports, and an USB/eSata combo. Both feature Intel Windows Vista Home Premium and six-cell batteries. While UK site Register Hardware pegged the release date for sometime this month, pg says they're due out sometime in May or June, and neither give any indication of a release window for US. We've also got a mention here of laptops R620 and R720, but unfortunately we've got no information on the models beyond that.

Read - On display
Read - Official specs

Samsung's Centrino 2-powered Q320 and R522 caught on display originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Apr 2009 21:33:00 EST. The company's device is hailed as a "fully calibrated WiFi networking module" that can speak directly to an Intel My WiFi, Centrino 2-based computer. Ideally, users will eventually be able to quickly print and sync between digiframes and photo archives, and the ultra-low power draw should keep batteries happy. Now, the real question: anyone stepping up to spearhead adoption?

G2 Microsystems demoes Intel My WiFi Personal Area Network originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 09 Jan 2009 09:40:00 EST. Intel's Montevina mobile processors will get a significant bump in the 2nd quarter of 2009 with the 3.06GHz Core 2 Duo T9900, and the 2.66GHz Core 2 Duo P8800. A completely separate, slightly more suspect Digitimes rumor tells of a possible Core 2 Quad Q9600 CPU of unknown speed and power. Regardless, we won't get to bask in their awesomeness for very long, as the switchover to the Calpella platform (and Clarksfield) will follow quickly in the 3rd quarter of 2009. Will the rumor-mill never cease to torture us?

[Via Electronista]

Read - Intel Clarksfield & Ibex Peak-M Chipsets In Q3 '09
Read - Intel planning Montevina Refresh

Leaked Intel roadmap shows Centrino 2 bump just before Calpella hits originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Oct 2008 15:48:00 EST. From what we can tell, Fujitsu's spent the industrial design budget for the LifeBook P8020 on one thing and one thing only: trimming those sides. We really do love to see a laptop with a keyboard and screen flush with the edges, seemingly wasting zero space. The resulting product is a tad chubby (1.1- to 1.5-inches) and lacks a certain charm, but there's all sorts of goodies under the hood, and the 2.9 pound weight is certainly passable. The 12.1-inch ultraportable packs a Centrino 2 processor, 320GB HDD (or a 64GB or 128GB SSD), 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth, gigabit Ethernet, a fingerprint reader, DVD burner, gesture-friendly trackpad and a 1.3 megapixel webcam. There's also a 6-cell battery and no 3G to drain it, so you should be able to expect some decent battery life when this hits in November, with a starting price of $1,799.

[Via SlashGear]

Fujitsu's LifeBook P8020 12.1-inch ultraportable wars against the dreaded screen bezel originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 20 Oct 2008 08:46:00 EST. Now that we think about it, it's been a hot minute since we've seen a new Stylistic tablet flow from the doors of Fujitsu-Siemens, but it has finally hit back with a new unit to keep the family alive. The Centrino 2-based ST6012 has been revealed on the firm's website without much fanfare, though the specs are decent enough. We're talking a Core 2 Duo SU9400 ULV processor, 12.1-inch WXGA (1,280 x 800) non-glare display, up to 4GB of RAM, optional WiFi / WWAN / Bluetooth modules, your choice of a 64GB SSD / 120GB to 320GB HDD, a built-in multicard reader, biometric scanner and a rather industrial motif. Mum's the word on a price and release, and quite honestly, we can't imagine those details ever being blasted from the rooftops.

[Via TabletPCReview]

Fujitsu-Siemens quietly intros Stylistic ST6012 tablet PC originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 29 Sep 2008 13:00:00 EST. Back in June, we heard that Sprint would be going live with its XOHM WiMAX service in Baltimore, um, this month. As of today, it's pretty clear that the service won't be rolled out fully before October dawns, but at least some progress is being made. Based on a survey sent out to select (read: lucky) Baltimore-area residents, it seems that Intel and Sprint are willing to give away free laptops in order to trial the XOHM service in the city. Unfortunately, the lappies won't even be given out until late October, and the trial itself is set to last 30 days, so frankly, we'll be lucky to see XOHM hit the general populace before Santa takes to the friendly skies. Though, why are we not surprised?

[Thanks, Anonymous]

Sprint and Intel signing up Baltimore-area XOHM testers originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 24 Sep 2008 09:15:00 EST. We all know the X300 was fairly widely praised, though that price tag was mighty prohibitive. Still, if you've got the coin to play around with ultrathin ultraportables, the X301 is a welcome upgrade. According to Laptop Mag, the Centrino 2 platform and built-in DisplayPort made an "already excellent machine even better." Most of the basics from the X300 are still here, but critics couldn't help but swoon over the new inclusions. Regrettably, the battery life was said to be an hour or two short for their liking, so it sounds as if you'll want to factor in an extra pack if you're the type who strays from power outlets. MSI has clearly been busy with its Wind here lately, but that doesn't mean it has forgotten entirely about the gaming crowd. The 15.4-inch GX620 and 17-inch GX720 were both made official today, even though they made their debut at CeBIT. Now that the specifications are nailed down, here's what you're looking at: an Intel Core 2 Duo processor, NVIDIA's 512MB GeForce 9600M GT, up to 4GB of DDR2 RAM, a 2-megapixel webcam, gigabit Ethernet, WiFi, a 320GB SATA drive, an optional Blu-ray drive, 6-cell battery and the usual assortment of ports. Sadly, there's no mention of prices just yet, but click on past the break for the full release.
Continue reading MSI gets official with Centrino 2-based GX620 / GX720 gaming laptops

MSI gets official with Centrino 2-based GX620 / GX720 gaming laptops originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 04 Aug 2008 13:27:00 EST. Maybe it's the 16.4-inch panel, or maybe it's the built-in Blu-ray drive. Whatever it is, Sony's VAIO FW has garnered quite a bit of attention. Just a fortnight after getting (extra) official, this nimble monster made its way into the loving arms of NotebookReview, where critics couldn't resist giving us a sneak peek before penning the fleshed-out review. We'll just get it out there -- initial impressions are really positive. Fit, finish and build quality were all deemed "excellent," and the overall design was dubbed "beautiful." Performance seemed to be above par during limited testing, though the screen is apt to be one of those love it or hate it ordeals. Check out the read link if for nothing more than a couple more shots.

Update: CNET has a full review of the unit.

Sony's 16.4-inch VAIO FW laptop gets previewed originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 06:25:00 EST. According to our friends at AVING, HP is set to launch a business-themed tablet PC with Intel's Centrino 2 on-board. The device -- dubbed the Compaq 2730p -- will be an update to the 2710p, and will feature a 12.1-inch WXGA display, a 1.86GHz Core 2 Duo L9400 CPU, 2GB of RAM, a 120GB hard drive, a GMA 4500MHD integrated graphics chipset, and Windows Vista... of course. No word on a price or release date, but plenty of handsome pictures if you hit the read link.

[Thanks, Elais]

HP set to launch the Compaq 2730p Centrino 2 tablet PC originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 09:50:00 EST. We're beginning to wonder if Panny's long-standing CF-52 and CF-74 will ever be replaced, but so long as folks keep biting, we suppose there's nothing wrong with perpetual makeovers. As with nearly every other laptop manufacturer, Panasonic has also decided it prudent to freshen up the aforesaid pair of Toughbooks with larger hard drives, 802.11n WiFi, expanded graphics capabilities and Intel's Centrino 2 platform. Aside from that, you can still expect the same rugged exterior, shock-mounted HDD and spill-resistant keyboard, but you'll pay dearly for those safeguards. Both the 15.4-inch CF-52 and 13.3-inch CF-74 will be available next month starting at $1,949 and $3,199, respectively.

Panasonic loads Centrino 2 into Toughbook CF-52 / CF-74 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 17 Jul 2008 00:26:00 EST. For those who won't even glance in the general direction of a gaming laptop unless it weighs in at 12+ pounds, you'll probably be unable to take your retinas off of Maingear's forthcoming beast. Word on the street has it that the aptly-titled eX-L will posses a potent 3.06GHz Core 2 Extreme X9100 CPU, which will predictably be overclocked by an undisclosed amount. Graphically, we're told to expect a couple of ATI GPUs or a single NVIDIA unit, while the 17-inch display, built-in speakers (with subwoofer) and 802.11n WiFi are pretty much par for the course. Pricing and availability details are still being withheld, but it sounds like this one won't be coming your way cheap.

Maingear prepping mammoth Centrino 2-based eX-L gaming laptop originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Jul 2008 13:38:00 EST. All the big names might have gotten their Centrino 2 lappies out the door today, but there hasn't been much action from the shady rebranders and fly-by-night system builders we love so dearly -- good thing OCZ is here with its Centrino 2-based OCZNBIM17A "whitebook" reference design. Get ready to see this bad boy appear in the back of vans everywhere with random company names on it -- you'll recognize the 17-inch laptop's boxy shape and available X9100 Core 2 Extreme processor, or perhaps the dual CrossFire-capable graphics slots with HDMI output will tip you off. Pricing will vary wildly depending on how various system builders configure this thing, but we've got a feeling generic doesn't mean cheap when it comes to this particular machine.

OCZ announces Centrino 2-based "whitebook" reference design for rebranders originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 18:04:00 EST.
It may be small change compared to the batches of Centrino 2 laptops some other manufacturers are trotting out, but Medion apparently isn't about to let the launch go by without throwing its hat in the ring, and it's now debuted its first entry: the 15.4-inch Akoya S5610 laptop. This one looks like it'll be able to hold its own, however, with it packing a 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo P7350 processor, ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3470 graphics with 256MB of RAM, a 320GB hard drive, and 3GB of RAM as standard, plus the usual perks like a 1.3 megapixel webcam and a fingerprint reader. No word on a release 'round these parts, but those in the UK will be able to get their hands one on by the end of this month for £600 (or about $1,200).

It looks like the Centrino 2 train just keeps on rolling, and Fujitsu's now hopped on board with six new LifeBooks in tow, including a pair of convertible tablets. That latter duo consists of the enterprise class LifeBook T5010, the successor to Fujitsu's T4220, and the slightly less security minded LifeBook T1010, both of which boast 13.3-inch displays and all the usual Centrino 2-related goodies. On the non-convertible front, Fujitsu has the 15.4-inch LifeBook A6210 (pictured above), the Centrino 2 vPro-supporting LifeBook E8420, and a pair of thin-and-light 14-inchers, the LifeBook S6520 and LifeBook S7220, each of which weigh in around four pounds. From the looks of it, the whole lot is available now, with the exception of the vPro editions of the LifeBook T5010 and LifeBook E8420, which are set to follow in 30 days.

The Centrino 2 bandwagon is all but overflowing, but apparently there's still room for Acer. Announced today, the outfit has revealed four new Aspire laptops along with five TravelMates with the aforesaid platform at the helm. The TravelMate 6293, 5730, 7730, 6593, and 6493 all come with WWAN options, Core 2 Duo processors, up to 4GB of RAM, integrated WiFi and a wide range of HDDs, graphics cards and other hardware. Per usual, mum's the word on dollars and cents, but feel free to pass the time in the photo gallery waiting down there in the read link.

[Via Laptop]

Acer hops on Centrino 2 train, brings along lots of TravelMate / Aspire lappies originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 12:21:00 EST. It's almost over folks -- at least, that's what we're continuing to tell ourselves. Anyways, Sammy has decided to follow in the footsteps of practically everyone else in the laptop realm by revealing a few newcomers over in South Korea. Granted, we already knew that a few of these were coming, but now we've got actual units with Photoshopped screen savers to prove their existence. Ready? Let's go. We've got the Centrino 2-based 12.1-inch Q210, 13.1-inch Q310, 14.1-inch R460, 15.4-inch R510 / R560 and 17-inch R710 on the consumer side, while the P210, P460, P461, P510 and P560 make up the business crowd. A few more lovely images are waiting in the read link, though no price / release dates accompany them.

[Thanks, Khattab]

Centrino 2 laptop parade continues as Samsung throws out a few originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 15 Jul 2008 11:03:00 EST. It's hard to stop a rolling stone, don't you know? Just months after you figured you'd never hear of Rock again, the recently rescued outfit has introduced a few Centrino 2-based lappies of its own. At a high level (tenth time you've heard that today, office dwellers?), we've got the Xtreme 780 with a Core 2 Duo Extreme X9100 and GeForce 9800M GTX, the Xtreme 620 with a Core 2 Extreme T9500 and 512MB GeForce 9800M GT, the Pegasus 520 and the Pegasus 320. As for pricing, you can expect a mild level of sticker shock when the crew goes up for pre-order later today. Hey, what do you know? More Centrino 2 news hot on the heels of Intel's official announcement. Today we've got HP shipping the Centrino 2-based EliteBook, Pavilion and a number of HP Compaq business laptops, with specs and pricing varying pretty wildly based on what you're looking to squeeze out of your rig. Get ready for a flood of Centrino 2 laptops, kids -- hot on the heels of Intel's big announcement and Sony and Lenovo's updated lineups comes Toshiba with the new Satellite Pro S300, Tecra M10 and A10, and Qosmio X305, F55 and Cell-based G55. The Qosmios actually aren't that new -- all three of them were initially announced back in June, but they're actually available now, with the gaming-oriented X305 exclusive to Best Buy. The $1,299 Satellite Pro S300 (pictured) is a little more interesting, with a 2.4GHz P8600 Core 2 Duo on Centrino 2's 1066MHz bus and Intel 4500MD integrated graphics powering a 15.4-inch display, as well as sleep-and-charge USB ports and a docking port. The more business-oriented Tecra lappies also get a similar Centrino 2 treatment, sharing a motherboard design to reduce repair costs. The $1,399 M10 sports a 14.1-inch screen, while the 15.4-inch A10's pricing hasn't been announced. Intel finally announced the new 802.11 Wi-Fi, integrated graphics-packing mobile platform after delays related to the wireless tech. Centrino 2 will come in two varieties: one for consumers and the vPro platform for the briefcase crew. The chipset can be configured for gamers, using a discrete graphics chip rather than the integrated set, if that's your thing. Of most import (or amusement) is Intel's HUGI (Hurry Up and Get Idle), which it says is the tech behind the Centrino 2's uber-efficiency -- faster speeds mean less time spent doing stuff, of course. It notes that the tech allows for an entire Blu-Ray disc to be played back for two hours on one battery charge. Finally, Intel promises a WiMax version this fall, so if you have the patience, you may want to wait for that barring further delays.

Intel unleashes the Centrino 2 -- finally originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 14 Jul 2008 23:05:00 EST. We'll start this by suggesting you take everything from here on out with a healthy dose of salt, but given that Sony has a history of updating its VAIO laptop line in one fell swoop, there's enough credibility here to pass it along. With everyone that hopes to remain relevant in the laptop sector going to Montevina as soon as feasibly possible, it's no shock to hear that Sony's VAIO FW, Z, SR and BZ series units will be making the same leap this summer. Currently, there aren't a whole lot of specifications floating about, but we do know the VGN-FW line will sport an atypical 16.4-inch display while both the VGN-Z and VGN-SR lines check in as subnotes. For a wee bit more on the supposedly forthcoming crew, surf southwest to the read link.

[Via Laptoping]

Montevina-Based Sony VAIO FW, Z, SR, BZ laptops around the bend? originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 23 Jun 2008 15:01:00 EST.
Another day, another batch of Centrino 2 laptops, these ones coming to us from ODM bigwig Compal, which has just announced four models based on Intel's latest and greatest platform. Those include the 15.4-inch JHL90 and JHL91, and the 14.1-inch JHT00 and JHT01 models, each of which are available with your choice of Penryn processors, along with NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics on the JHL90 and GeForce 9300M GS on the JHT00, or integrated Intel graphics on the two lower-end models. Otherwise, you can expect to get your choice of 5,400 rpm or 7,200 rpm hard drives (no SSD though), a max 4GB of RAM, Intel Turbo Memory, a DVD burner or Blu-ray drive, and integrated WiMAX in addition to the usual WiFi and Bluetooth. No word on a price or release date, but you can pretty safely bet that you'll be seeing these under any number of brands in the not too distant future.

[Thanks, Michele]

While we've yet to see the expected flood of Centrino 2-based gear, things certainly seem to be picking up as we near the end of that little delay, with Santech only the latest to debut a laptop based on the platform once known as Montevina. Dubbed the X46, this one comes packing a 15.4-inch WXGA+ display, along with your choice of Core 2 Duo processor up to 2.8GHz, up to 4GB of RAM (plus 2GB of Intel Turbo Memory). a 512MB NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GT graphics card, a max 320GB hard drive (or 200GB if you want to do 7,200 rpm), and your choice of a DVD burner or Blu-ray drive. Look for this one to start shipping in Europe by June 30th, with prices starting around the $1,000 mark for the default configuration.

Packard Bell unleashed a big ol' set of machines in Italy today. Among the new laptops, the EasyNote RS65 13.3-incher cued some unusual design elements like red and chrome highlights and circular touchpad. It packs an Intel Centrino 2 and dedicated video card with DVI and HDMI. Other machines include the multimedia-friend ML (15.4-inch) and SL (17-inch) based on the Puma platform. Also of note are the MT (15.4-inch) and ST (17-inch) laptops, which include a "Battery Boost" button that allows you to switch between dedicated video and integrated Intel GMA chipsets in order to conserve unwired time. Finally, the TN line (pictured above) is set to appeal to a younger audience with low prices and multimedia features. In the desktop category, Packard Bell intro'd new i-Media, family-Extreme, and i-Max machines that run the gamut from diminutive budget boxes to gamer-friendly powerhouses. Peep the read link (in Italian) to get a deeper scoop.

Packard Bell busts out new Puma laptops, trio of new desktop lines originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jun 2008 10:48:00 EST. Over at HP's Connecting Your World event, there's a lot more to see than a new color-critical display and ultrathin all-in-one PC. More specifically, the outfit has rolled out 16 new laptop models, so we'll just cut right to it. Up first is the business-centric EliteBook premium series, which now arrives in a new slate of sizes and configurations. You'll also find a new selection of Pavilion Entertainment notebooks (dv4, dv5 and dv7) with ProtectSmart Hard Drive Protection, and there's even a few HP Compaq Presarios (CQ45, CQ40 and CQ50) out there with a fresh "industrial design and HP Imprint 2 surface finish." As you can imagine, there's far too many hardware specifications to cover in this space, so bury your face in the read link for more details on the whole July-bound lot.

Looks like Intel and ASUS are gearing up to demo some Centrino 2 (Montevina) gear at Computex, as Intel's Senior Technical Marketing Engineer for Corporate Demonstrations blogged on Intel's site about running around using the yet-unreleased M51VA with WiMAX in Taipei. Sounds like he sure is enjoying the hardware his company produced, even despite the recent delays which are keeping it out of the hands of non-Intel folk like you and us.

Intel gets early hands-on with Intel-based ASUS M70VM originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 01 Jun 2008 19:36:00 EST. With Intel's Montevina platform (hopefully) on the way and AMD's claim that "over 100" laptops will launch with Puma, it's kind of surprising that we haven't seen even more pre-release info on machines due to ship with the new chips, but apparently ASUS is getting ready to hit us with some new gear at Computex. Based on the existing M51 and M70 lines, the M51VR will feature a 2.26GHz Penryn P8400 with 3MB of L2 cache on Montevina's 1.06GHz bus, while the M51VA and M70VM (pictured) will get 2.53GHz T9400s with 6MB of cache. ASUS should also be showing off the Puma-based F5Z and X50Z laptops with 1.9GHz AMD Athlon64 X2 QL-60 chips, 667MHz buses, ATI Mobility Radeon HD3200 graphics and 15.4-inch screens at Computex, so it'll be interesting to see how these bad boys do side-by-side.

[Thanks, Sergio]

Read - ASUS Montevina laptops
Read - ASUS Puma laptops

Montevina and Puma-based ASUS notebooks leak out originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 28 May 2008 17:28:00 EST. We already knew that AMD had its Puma and Griffin-based Turion line coming, but a June 3 launch at Computex is all but confirmed now. The Puma platform will be based on the Turion Ultra processor with an integrated Mobility Radeon 3200 graphics chip along with as WiFi. Discrete graphic chip options will include the ATI Mobility Radeon 3450, 3650, and 3850. SSDs will make a limited appearance due to what AMD is citing as a prohibitive high cost. Nonetheless, it looks like AMD is doing whatever it can to take the spotlight away from Intel, especially now that the Centrino 2 has been delayed.

AMD's Turion Ultra to launch June 3, additional Puma details revealed originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 28 May 2008 13:53:00 EST. Citing problems with the chip's integrated graphics and issues with 802.11n certification, Intel has pushed its launch to July 14, with the complete line hitting streets in the first week of August. Says AMD, "Hi. We're AMD. Heads up, spec hounds. PC Microworks' Edge with Centrino 2 (aka Montevina) is a powerhouse that cannot be denied. This speedster sports a 15.4-inch WUXGA screen, packs a Montevina Quad Core Centrino 2 CPU, 2gb of DDR3 at 1333MHz, nVIDIA Gefore 9800M GTX, HSPDA, and up to 4TB of 7200RPM drives. Don't go running to the credit card gods just yet, though, as the Core 2 Extreme Quad Core QX9300 (2.53GHz/1066MHz/12MB) version won't be available until the end of July. What's more, this baby all decked-out will run you a cool $8,265.

[Thanks, Matthew]

PC Microworks intros Montevina-powered Edge uber-laptop originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 24 May 2008 21:27:00 EST. The X9100 is meant to usher in the "Montevina" Centrino 2 era, and boasts significant less power consumption than its forebears, in addition to those spiffy new clock speeds. Well, it turns out the new iMacs aren't Montevina, but instead a special-made 45nm Penryn 3.06GHz chip with a 1066MHz frontside bus. That means most of the juice of the X9100, but at 55 watts instead of 44. This chip exclusivity has been a bit of a pattern with Apple, and one which we're sure its competitors are quite appreciative of.

Read - Electronista
Read - TG Daily

New iMacs running an overclocked Penryn chip, not Montevina originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 19:03:00 EST.
Germany's Cizmo isn't exactly the most well-known laptop manufacturer 'round these parts, but the company's new 15.4-inch, Centrino 2-based CX15 looks like it could well win it some new fans, with it boasting some pretty impressive specs and some not-too-shabby looks to match. Under that shiny exterior is your choice of a P8400, P8600, or P9400 Core 2 Duo processor, NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTX graphics, DDR3 RAM, an optional Blu-ray drive, an eSATA port, and a 32GB or 64GB SSD drive if standard hard drives aren't your thing. If that sounds like it fits your bill, you can look for this one to hit Europe in the first half of June with a starting price of €1,499, or just over $2,400.

So you like the looks of Dell's 14.1-inch Latitude E6400 do ya? Well what if we told you that Dell plans a semi-rugged E6400 ATG version? While it won't replace Dell's fully-rugged XFR D630 when the ATG launches in June, we can't help but be intrigued at the prospect of a dust-proof, shock-proof, and spill-proof, humidity and altitude resistant Centrino 2 laptop with super bright 750cd/m2 (or 650cd/m2 touchscreen) display, GPS, UWB, DisplayPort and more. It can get pretty rugged working unwashed in our robes and slippers, you know. Full features listed after the break as our Week o' Dell scoops continues.
Continue reading Dell's leaked E6400 ATG for mustachioed, overall types (just not Mario)

Dell's leaked E6400 ATG for mustachioed, overall types (just not Mario) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 24 Mar 2008 06:06:00 EST. Our week o' Dell scoops continues with what Dell calls its "mainstream" and "essential" series of Latitude E-series laptops. While the enterprise-ready, mainstream series packs just about everything (and more) that you could hope for in a balanced spec-for-size lappie, the essential series is only essential if you're on a tight budget and just can't live without the comparatively low-end chub. The 15.4-inch E6500 and 14.1-inch E6400 models will replace Dell's D830 and D630 whereas the "essential" 15.4-inch E5500 and 14.1-inch E5400 carry on the low-end tradition of Dell's D531 and D530. With any luck, these will be Dell's first Montevina / Centrino 2 class machines if they all hit the targeted June release date as planned. AMD fans will see the E5500a and E5400a configurations at about the same time. So what can you expect under the hood? Well, just look at the 5.1-pound E6500 which reads like a suit's, geek fantasy:

UWB, Bluetooth 2.1, mobile broadband

Integrated GPS, yes GPS

New 84WHr slice batteries for "all day" computing

LED backlighting, 1920 x 1200 pixel resolution, discrete nVIDIA graphics and DisplayPort out

Hard, Hybrid, and Solid State disk drive options with eSATA jack for more

Optional camera and mic

Plenty of security options including contact-less smart cards and encrypted hard disks

They've come away with a Q3 ship date and price of $1,038 when purchasing the quad-core proc in bulk. Digitimes' own sources had originally pegged the QX9300 for a May release. In case you missed it, it was Eurocom's Phantom-X that managed to swipe that "fastest tested laptop" mark from the MacBook Pro last year -- and totally ruin a perfectly good commercial. Now the company is back for more with the M860TU Montebello 15.4-incher. We'll have to wait for the benchmarks to see how this one stacks up against the recent crop of Penryn laptops, but what's new here is that the Centrino 2 "Montevina" chipset is under the hood, which should support faster Penryn processors, lower power consumption and some new fancy security features. Other specs on the M860TU include a 15.4-inch 1920 x 1200 LCD, 512MB NVIDIA 8800M GTX graphics (with a future option for 9xxxM GTX chips once they're announced), 4GB of RAM, HSDPA and external eSATA and HDMI plugs. Yeah, pretty hot. No word on price, but the laptop is slated to ship May 1st.

Eurocom's M860TU Montebello 15.4-inch laptop rocks the Centrino 2 originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 08 Mar 2008 14:14:00 EST. As Daily Tech reports, the new platform will make its debut in June of this year, and will include separate "Performance" and "Small Form Factor" lines. On that former front, you can expect processors ranging form 2.26GHz to 2.8GHz, with a TDP rating of either 25W or 35W and prices from $209 to $530. The Small Form Factor line, on the other hand, is considerably more over the map, boasting processor speeds from 1.2GHz all the way up to 2.2GHz, and TDP ratings ranging from a mere 5.5W to 25W (prices will be between $262 to $316). Needless to say, this bit of news has also already set the latest MacBook rumor mill into full swing, with DailyTech reporting that "Apple insiders" say the company will refresh its laptop line alongside the platform's launch in June, not that you likely needed "insiders" to tell you that.

[Via MacRumors]

Intel lays out roadmap for Montevina-based Centrino 2 platform originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 27 Feb 2008 17:46:00 EST.
