Must See HDTV for the week of February 17th: Winter Olympics, Daytona 500 and Strider
This is the final week of the Winter Olympics, with the closing ceremonies scheduled for Sunday night. Bob Costas is back (with less creepy demon-possessed eye infection stare) plus plenty of action including bobsled, short-track speed skating, hockey finals and of course, curling. Game of Thrones season three will hit the shelves on Blu-ray, so whether you're looking for a recap or just getting your first look in 1080p, now is the time. Racing fans can also look forward to the start of the NASCAR Sprint Cup season with the Daytona 500 on Sunday, while gamers can enjoy a remake of the classic game Strider on current and next-gen systems this week -- although honestly, many of us are just trying to finish off House of Cards before the spoilers become impossible to avoid or filter out. Usually we don't point out the late-night weekly shows, but tonight Jimmy Fallon takes over the Tonight Show chair from Jay Leno. Dance Central gets double 'Freak' DLC on Feb. 15
She's a very kinky girl, the kind you don't take home to mother -- unless mama wanna dance! Dance Central adds old- and new-school tracks tomorrow, February 15, with songs from Rick James and Missy Elliott for 240 MSP ($3) apiece. Funk and disco are respectively represented by a pair of undoubted classics: Rick James' "Super Freak" and Chic's hit "Le Freak." More modern flavor gets mixed in with MIssy Elliott's "We Run This," from her 2005 album The Cookbook. It's not the most desirable dance track we'd like to see from the hip-hop beat master's repertoire, but it's a start. There's also a track from Amerie -- don't feel bad if the name doesn't ring any bells -- and she, too, has a couple of other tracks that'd be nice to see available in Dance Central at some point.
LG Optimus One and Optimus Chic specs confirmed, joining the Froyo party in November
If you're not much of a Nokia connoisseur, then how about something a little different to boost your appetite? Today, LG has finally let loose the juicy details about its Optimus One (pictured left) and Optimus Chic Android 2.2 handsets, which were actually unveiled a little over two months ago. The spec sheets -- embedded after the break -- confirm that both low-end Froyo phones carry a 600MHz chip, 3.2-inch 320 x 480 LCD capacitive touchscreen, and the usual wireless package (802.11b/g WiFi, A-GPS, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, and FM radio). The difference? Apart from the appearance and button configurations, the One's 1500mAh battery beats the Chic's by 250mAh, but loses out in the megapixel race with only 3 to the Chic's 5MP imager. No prices announced just yet, but we'll keep our eyes peeled open when they arrive at European stores in November.
Alcatel readying 20 "stylish" handsets for the US market
Just over a fortnight after deploying UMTS 900, Alcatel is now announcing that we Americans better get prepared for an absolute onslaught of phones right here in the US market. The 20 phone lineup is being dubbed a "spring lineup of fashion phones" that are reportedly quite the "chic and stylish" bunch. While there wasn't much detail on the specification end, we do know that the handsets will sport "soft-touch plastics, a leather-like finish, and design touches like dots of liquid metal." Of course, the ladies should appreciate the already-promised floral offerings, and those eying a low- to mid-range phone should find at least one option that suits their fancy. Among the barrage will be flavors that sport a 1.3-megapixel camera, 3.5-millimeter headphone jack, dedicated music controls, and support for 1GB TransFlash cards to boot. Currently, the outfit is already working to get its GSM handsets approved by AT&T, and the CDMA phones should be good to go on several "smaller regional carriers," hopefully by May of this year.[Via PhysOrg.com]
