Vertu's first foray into the heady modern world of touchscreen phones has arrived, and it still looks KIRF-ably premium. But what's surprising is that the Constellation's feature ensemble is actually half-decent -- at least relative to its predecessors. Wearing an exclusive 3.5-inch AMOLED screen coated entirely in sapphire crystal, the Constellation completes the look with a "ceramic pillow" (we'd call it an 'earpiece') and a black alligator skin back cover. Last seen skulking around Bluetooth product listings, it's now back in the public spotlight with a confirmed eight megapixel camera, flanked by a twin LED flash and HSPA+ connections. There's no word on what OS this starlet is working with, though it's likely to be Symbian -- appropriate for all those oil barons, F1 drivers and other anachronistic rich types who can (send staff to) pick up their new Vertu from stores now.

Vertu Constellation packs gaudy brilliance, and we don't mean the AMOLED originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 21 Oct 2011 02:03:00 EST. We here at Engadget Mobile tend to spend <strike>a lot of</strike> way too much time poring over the latest FCC filings, be it on the net or directly on the ol' Federal Communications Commission's site. Since we couldn't possibly (want to) cover all the stuff that goes down there, we've gathered up all the raw info you may want (but probably don't need). Enjoy!

Update: It appears the FCC is doing some work on its website, which means some of the links may show up as an error for the next few days.
There's been a lot of talk of things coming to an end at NASA lately, but there are also some new beginnings, and the space agency has now officially filled in one big gap. It's announced that the so-called Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle (or MPCV) will be its go-to space exploration vehicle for missions beyond Low Earth Orbit -- presumably, the individual spacecraft will get names more up to the level of boldly-named vehicles like Endeavor and Atlantis. If it looks a little familiar, that's because the MPCV will be based on the Orion spacecraft that was developed under the now-canceled Constellation program and, like it, it will be built by Lockheed Martin. Once it's put into service, the spacecraft will be capable of carrying four astronauts on missions up to 21 days, and it could even be used as a backup for cargo and crew delivery to the ISS. To actually get into space, it'll blast off atop a heavy lift rocket, and then splash down Apollo-style in the Pacific Ocean. Head on past the break for NASA's official announcement.

Continue reading NASA commits to Orion-based Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle for space exploration

NASA commits to Orion-based Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle for space exploration originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 May 2011 19:53:00 EST. The MLC NAND-equipped Pulsar.2 is capable of 6Gbps speeds over SATA, while the 2.5-inch XT.2 uses SLC memory and a 6Gbps SAS connection, and both are unsurprisingly touted as being the fastest and finest guardians you can buy for your company's data. Seagate sees the use of MLC flash on the Pulsar.2 as a major advantage in lowering costs, while its data-protecting and error-correcting firmware is expected to maintain the high levels of data integrity required in this space. No price is actually given to validate Seagate's claims of a breakthrough price / performance combination, but both of its new SSDs should be available in the second quarter of this year. The XT.2 is already shipping out to OEMs, along with its 360MBps read and 300MBps write speeds. There are also new Savvio and Constellation HDDs from the company, but you'll have to read the 1,400-word <strike>essay</strike> press release after the break to learn more about them.
Continue reading Seagate Pulsar XT.2 and Pulsar.2 SSDs target enterprise, reliability-obsessed consumers

Seagate Pulsar XT.2 and Pulsar.2 SSDs target enterprise, reliability-obsessed consumers originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 Mar 2011 06:39:00 EST. Western Digital may have shipped the industry's first 2.5-inch 1TB hard drive, and PureSilicon may have done likewise for the SSD sector, but Seagate is still finding a way to lay claim to a "first" with its newfangled Constellation.2. This here 2.5-incher is hailed as the "first 1TB 2.5-inch enterprise HDD," with it being primed and ready for the insane demands generally found in DAS, NAS, SAN and other nonstop business environments. You'll get 6Gb/s performance, T10 Protection Information (you know, for keeping your scanned travel receipts safe and sound) and 1.4 million hours MTBF. There's a self-encrypting drive option for those who just can't be too careful, and it'll be out and about later this month in capacity choices of 250GB, 500GB, and 1TB. Mum's the word on pricing, but Dell ought to be offering 'em across its enterprise products before the dawn of 2011.
Continue reading Seagate trots out 2.5-inch 1TB Constellation.2 hard drive, dares you to wear it out

Seagate trots out 2.5-inch 1TB Constellation.2 hard drive, dares you to wear it out originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 13 Dec 2010 17:43:00 EST. Ah, Vertu, where would we be without you? Richer, to be sure, but so very bored. Vertu's QWERTY-packing Constellation Quest has just gotten the FCC's stamp of approval, and in addition to the typical beauty shots the FCC includes, there's also a detailed manual that shows the phone to be running some heavily skinned version of Symbian. The phone has HSDPA data and WiFi, and Vertu is even packing along a 32GB microSD card. There's still plenty we don't know about the phone, like when it will hit stores and how many arms and legs it will cost, but for now we're just happy to have "cray Uncle Vertu" around for the party.

Gallery: Vertu Constellation Quest shows up at the FCC

Vertu Constellation Quest shows up at the FCC, running Symbian and looking pleasantly outrageous originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 19 Oct 2010 11:37:00 EST. Overkill, thy name is Vertu. Nokia's luxury handset division has rarely gotten much love on these pages, but that's mostly to do with the excessive use of "high end" materials on its phones and zeroes in its prices. Both are present and accounted for here, with the stainless steel and leather-bound Constellation Ayxta starting at somewhere around $7,500. Still, we retain a curiosity to see such exclusive devices in the glaring lights of reality, and Gear Diary has treated us to just such a treat. The handset before you can crank out 6 hours of talk time over GSM or 300 hours of standby, navigate preloaded maps over GPS, or hook you up to an instant Concierge service if you don't feel like doing the work yourself. And why should you? Mosey on over to the source for the full unboxing gallery.
Vertu Constellation Ayxta gets unboxed and admired originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 06 Apr 2010 00:21:00 EST. Seagate's no stranger to the world of SATA 6Gbps, and if you really, really needed another option, here you go. The aforesaid company has just shipped what it calls the industry's first 2TB 6Gbps SAS enterprise drive, complete with a 7200RPM spindle speed and some sort of "best-in-class" reliability. And given the kind of thing that Seagate's own CEO recommends you use its drives for, you can be certain that you'll need that. Mum's the word on pricing, but 500GB and 1TB versions are also out there for those with less to archive.
Seagate ships 3.5-inch 2TB 6Gbps Constellation ES hard drive originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 22 Feb 2010 18:13:00 EST.

It may only represent a smidgen of the multi-trillion dollar annual federal budget, but funding for NASA never fails to stir up debate, and that looks like it'll be the case more than ever with the Obama administration's just-announced 2011 budget. While NASA's budget will actually increase slightly to $19 billion, the big news is that Constellation moon program started by the Bush administration in 2006 (with the goal of returning by 2020) is being shelved amid what amounts to a fairly big change in priorities for NASA. That includes the first phase of more than $9 billion in spending on robotic exploration and heavy-lift rockets and, perhaps most notably, $6 billion in spending to promote the development of commercial rockets and spacecraft -- which NASA hopes will eventually be able to transport astronauts into orbit. Turning around a space agency isn't exactly easy though, and it'll apparently cost $3 billion over two years simply to end what's already been started on the Constellation program.

Feeling a little wistful? Then head on past the break for a brief history of NASA's recent lunar ambitions.
Continue reading Budget puts NASA's moon program on ice, promises to 'blaze a new trail of discovery'

Budget puts NASA's moon program on ice, promises to 'blaze a new trail of discovery' originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 01 Feb 2010 16:34:00 EST. Vertu's not known for making cut rate electronics, so this is probably the closest it'll ever come. The company's just unveiled its latest flip phone, the Constellation Ayxta. The Ayzta is aimed at citizens of the world who are looking for a "high quality product to assist in maintaining their standard of living wherever they may be," -- i.e., lazy people who'd rather throw money at something than figure out what to do on their own on a Friday night in Vienna. We can sympathize -- sort of. To that end, the handset will be kitted with all manner of, including Vertu's own Concierge service which puts you on the line with a customer service representative directly -- no hold required. Users will also get access to Vertu Select -- which, as we said before, will help you out and tell you where all the cool people are in whatever one horse you happen to be in at the moment. It's got 3G and a micros SD slot for up to 8GB of storage, plus a 3.0 megapixel cam with integrated flash (which is always nice), but other than that it's pretty unimpressive. The Constellation Ayxta is available in Europe now, and for a very affordable €4,900 to €6,500 -- somewhere in the neighborhood of $7,000 - $10,500.

[Via T3]

Vertu announces Constellation Ayxta flip phone for the discerning, friendless traveler originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 25 Sep 2009 10:31:00 EST.

It seems like only yesterday that we were hearing about Paragon's designs for greenhouses on the lunar surface (but that's because it was yesterday). Now we've been hepped to the fact that the company is teaming up with Oceaneering International to overhaul NASA's space suit. The last that we heard, the project had been scuttled altogether, but you know how quickly things can be unscuttled when the White House changes hands. The Constellation Space Suit System (CSSS) will be designed in a modular fashion, so that the same suit can be used by the astronaut for all the different aspects of his / her mission. You can look forward to the stylish debut of these bad boys on the new Orion spaceship, currently planned to launch in 2015. According to Engineering TV, this will be the first major space suit redesign in over forty years. Can we make a suggestion? Please don't do anything to that iconic NASA logo -- some things never go out of style. Video after the break.

It's been a long time coming, but Seagate's finally unveiled its first 2TB hard drive, the 3.5-inch Constellation ES. The hefty spinner also comes in 500GB and 1TB varieties and runs at 7,200RPM, which should make it a bit faster than Western Digital's behemoth, according to reviews for the latter. It'll be out calendar Q3, which we take to be fancy schmancy business talk for "this Summer." Meanwhile, the 2.5-inch ES-less Constellation line sports 3 Gbps SATA and SAS 2.0 interface. Look for this one in 160GB and 500GB sizes sometime this quarter, with Dell said to be one the first companies to offer the drives. Check out one more out-of-this-world promotional image after the break.
Continue reading Seagate's 2TB Constellation ES is rife with potential space puns

Seagate's 2TB Constellation ES is rife with potential space puns originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 03 Feb 2009 08:02:00 EST. Though not quite as elegant as the Neues Licht, the Constellation Light is still way more practical. Designed by Kenzan Tsutakawa-Chinn and showcased at the recent BKLYN Designs expo, the LED chandelier is crafted from clusters of 3-millimeter LEDs (364 in total on the tips of 91 copper tubes). Notably, it's creator is currently seeking UL approval for the device and hopes to get it on the market in short order, but there's been no mention yet of just how costly it could one day be.

[Via Inhabitat]

Constellation Light puts LED twist on chandelier originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 14 May 2008 21:02:00 EST. You know how it goes -- when you're this high-end, don't even bother waiting for your bestest of friends to toss you a birthday party to celebrate ten years of mindless self indulgence. Instead, Vertu's doing the only thing it really can by cranking out a fashionable new collection to commemorate its decennial anniversary. The Constellation Rococo collection was reportedly inspired by "the eighteenth century French art, fashion and interior design movement by the same name," and if you're into floral patterns, bold colors and monogrammed Vs, you're sure to fall head over heels for this lot. Rest assured, however, that the epicurean handset maker won't be giving these away as gifts (or anything close to it) when they land this summer.
Filed under: Handsets, Vertu, GSM, EDGE

Vertu throws its own party with Constellation Rococo collection originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 26 Apr 2008 23:31:00 EST. Well, this is just a little self-indulgent, is it not? Everyone's favorite purveyor of unapologetically overpriced handsets is celebrating its tenth birthday this year (holy cow, has it seriously been that long?) and to commemorate the occasion in style, it's launching a series of Constellations in a "Monogram Collection." Here's the catch, though: the phones can't be monogrammed with their owners' initials. Oh, no, that would be uncouth. Instead, the phones bear Vertu's own "V" logo emblazoned repeatedly across their rarified hides in some sort of process that takes several hours to complete. They'll be available come April 1 in Pewter, Green, Red, Sky Blue, and Cerise -- and unlike their launch date, their stratospheric price tags will sadly be no joke.
Filed under: Handsets, Vertu, GSM, EDGE

Vertu Constellation gets monogrammed -- with Vertu's initials originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 12 Mar 2008 23:51:00 EST. Stainless steel, gold -- how is one exceptionally well-to-do individual to decide? Now one doesn't have to, all thanks to Vertu's Mixed Metal edition of the Constellation. While lacking the 3G data of its Ascent Ti cousin, the Constellation at least has the common decency to rock four bands of GSM reception plus EDGE data, giving users at least a fleeting hope of exploiting the phone's customized version of S40 to its fullest. Then again, virtually anyone within Vertu's target demo couldn't care less about the radio or the operating system; in this rarified air, it's all about the preciousness of the metals, and this particular version of the Constellation seems to deliver by mixing in gold accents (real gold, naturally) with the stainless steel theme. Interested parties should tap their Swiss accounts or prepare to sell their souls, firstborns, or some combination therewith.

[Via Sybarites, thanks JW]
Filed under: Handsets, Vertu, GSM, EDGE

Vertu Constellation, now in Mixed Metal flavor originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 18 Dec 2007 13:29:00 EST.
All that glitters chez Vertu is gold -- well OK most, but who'd spend this much for stainless steel? -- and in the case of this handset in the Constellation series, rose gold. Unlike other in the collection, leather choices only include black, and not the other garish colors we've seen before. This handset still impresses with its opulence factor, but we'd like to see the inclusion of 3G for the kind of money you have to drop to join the club.

[Via Sybarites]

If you're going to drop four figures (or more) on a cellphone, the least Vertu can do for you is hook you up with quadband GSM plus EDGE, and their latest Constellation model finally delivers. Sybarites.org recently had the opportunity to play around with the Constellation and came away very impressed -- we'd expect no less -- loving its S40 OS (highly modified to suit Vertu's needs, of course), the aviation-themed graphics and animations, and that jeweled Vertu keypad we all know and love. It seems the leather / steel model is the only one out the door at the moment, with a gold version to follow -- but rest assured, regardless of the type you choose, it's going to be mighty heavy.
Filed under: Handsets, Vertu, GSM, GPRS, EDGE

Hands-on with Vertu's latest, the Constellation originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 03 Oct 2006 12:30:00 EST. If we're gonna drop a couple grand on a phone, the least it can do is give us quad-band GSM, right? As we reported a couple weeks back, Vertu's new Constellation handset picks up where their previous efforts left off, packing GSM 850/900/1800/1900 plus EDGE data all 2003-like. We weren't able to glean much from the draft manual (which still has Signature pictures in it), but the Constellation looks to rock a variant of Nokia's S40 platform -- we leave that to the world's privileged to decide whether that's an upgrade from the Signature and Ascent's OS. Look for this little slice of leather-covered opulence to drop later this year; we're sure you rich folk will find ways to shed some cash while you wait.

Vertu Constellation gets the FCC treatment originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 18 Jul 2006 13:38:00 EST. According to, of all sources, a video on Google Video, the next Vertu line will be dubbed the Constellation; we understand it will feature quad-band EDGE (finally!), Bluetooth, and significantly higher resolution and larger screen. This new model should launch in the September time period; stay tuned as we expect further details to start trickling in shortly.
Filed under: Handsets, Vertu, Symbian, GSM, EDGE

Vertu Constellation To Be Launched originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 03 Jul 2006 05:57:00 EST.
