The company shared the news during today's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/expand/agenda/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Expand conference</a> in San Francisco, shortly after unveiling two <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/17/the-inside-story-of-lenovo-thinkpad-redesign/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">new ThinkPad models</a>, including the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2013/03/17/lenovo-thinkpad-t431s-ultrabook-official/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">T431s Ultrabook</a>. Lenovo hasn't confirmed whether that model will offer tap-to-pay support, too, but we certainly wouldn't rule it out. We've seen contactless payments in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/19/a-week-with-google-wallet-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">plenty of smartphones</a>, of course, but widespread tablet and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/12/sony-and-global-hid-to-unify-felica-and-nfc-laptop-reader-techno/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">laptop implementation</a> has yet to arrive.</p><p> <i>Follow all of Engadget's Expand coverage live from San Francisco </i><a href="http://www.engadget.com/expand/agenda/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><i>right here</i></a><i>!</i></p>

RBS (and by extension, NatWest) is partnering with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Visa/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Visa</a> Europe to roll out TouchPay, a mobile payment system based around an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/22/aussie-bank-debuts-kaching-app-accompanying-icarte-case-for-mob/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iCarte case</a> for the iPhone 4 and 4S -- sorry, early <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/18/apple-iphone-5-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5</a> owners. In tandem with a native app, the service allows paying for goods at British shops by tapping the phone at a Visa-capable <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NFC/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC</a> terminal without needing the short-range wireless built-in. Now, the joint venture backed by AT&amp;T, T-Mobile and Verizon has announced that it'll debut its system in Austin and Salt Lake City next month. At least part of the delay is attributed to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/04/isis-mobile-payment-system-to-work-with-visa-and-mastercard-she/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">shift in strategy</a>, when Isis shelved its plans to process payments through the carriers themselves and instead work with MasterCard and Visa. Isis representatives have declined to elaborate on future expansion plans.</p><p> Coinciding with the recent update that enabled Isis support for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/28/t-mobile-gs-ii-isis-update/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">T-Mobile's Galaxy S II</a>, MasterCard has come clean with a list of devices that'll receive similar treatment. Specifically, those in the US can expect the Droid Incredible 4G LTE, One X, Amaze 4G, Galaxy S III to gain Isis support. Naturally, the possibility remains open for other devices as well, and if you'd like to see the complete list of candidates, make sure to check out the PDF below.</p>

In fact, we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/01/samsung-and-visa-join-forces-to-enable-nfc-mobile-payment-at-201/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">all but knew</a> its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/03/samsung-galaxy-s-iii-preview-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">latest and greatest</a> smartphone was going to be the handset-maker's Olympic Games Phone. Today, however, the union has been made official via an announcement with Visa. Trialists and Athletes sponsored by the brands will have access to a special edition "showcase device" with Visa's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/12/visa-certifies-nfc-equipped-android-blackberry-smartphones-for/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">payWave</a> payment application onboard. The collaboration is, of course, a drive to push the penetration of contactless payments in both the UK and the world stage. Payments under &pound;20 won't need a passcode, and users will also be able to check their balance and purchase history from the app. It's estimated there'll be about 140,000 contactless terminals in the country by the time the Olympic tanks roll in, so plenty of places to pick up that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/kirf?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">official merch</a> for the family back home.</p>

It would seem Mountain View's complacency is Moneto's gain, as the outfit's recently put up for sale its $30 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/11/moneto-nfc-microsd-contactless-payment-Android-iPhone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC-enabled microSD card</a> -- enabling plebes everywhere sans contactless circuitry to sashay their way into mobile payment heaven. That card is also stuffed with 1GB of storage for your exploits and those plunking down three Hamiltons are also privy to a $10 credit thrown in. There's one caveat, however, as per its website the service currently only works on variants of the Galaxy S (including carrier permutations like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/29/samsung-t-mobile-vibrant-and-verizon-fascinate-preview/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Vibrant</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/07/samsung-fascinate-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Fascinate</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/10/samsung-galaxy-s-4g-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Galaxy S 4G</a>). Support for an additional forty devices is inbound but before committing, we'd peep the latest compatibility info from the horse's mouth in the more coverage link we've included below.

Previously the exclusive phone-swiping <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/19/a-week-with-google-wallet-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">domain</a> of Sprint's Nexus S 4G, it now seems possible to get the wonders of Google wallet on its decidedly 3G predecessor. However, it's not an operation for the faint-hearted. If the words <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cyanogen/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Cyanogen</a>, full wipe, flash and kernel resemble white noise, it's probably worth waiting for an official release. See how the forum members at <em>XDA Developers</em> got their NFC wallet fix at the link below.<br />

Stacking the lineup against <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/19/a-week-with-google-wallet-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Wallet</a>, manufacturers HTC, LG, Motorola, RIM, Samsung and Sony Ericsson have been drafted by team Isis, agreeing to implement its NFC technology standard into future phone offerings. By garnering multi-manufacturer support, the joint AT&amp;T, T-Mobile and Verizon venture is pulling a power move against Mountain View's offering -- currently only functional on Sprint's Nexus S 4G (although that's almost certainly bound to change). Finally gearing up for battle, the crew recently <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/29/atandt-t-mobile-and-verizon-give-isis-mobile-payment-network-a-1/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">pumped $100 million</a> into the initiative, helping to win support from the aforementioned hardware heavy hitters. For those who aren't ready to buy a new phone just to jump on the NFC bandwagon, Isis says it's working with DeviceFidelity to add the functionality to older models as well. The more devices that have the technology, the better the chance we'll be ditching our leather wallets for the mobile variety. <em><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/10/engadget-primed-what-is-nfc-and-why-do-we-care/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Or so they say</a>.</em> Check out the full PR after the break.

	We're pretty excited about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GoogleWallet/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Wallet</a>, but the service is currently only available for Nexus S 4G phone owners, leaving most of you waiting for broader implementation. Well, how would you like to skip the line, getting to test it out on a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NexusS4G/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nexus S 4G</a> of your very own? Google has supplied us with five phones to give away -- the company is even throwing in $1,000 (yes, one THOUSAND dollars) of prepaid credit to help fund those first few dozen taps. There's one catch: you'll need to use your Nexus S 4G with a Sprint plan, though the carrier is throwing in one month of demo service to get you started. Check out our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/19/a-week-with-google-wallet-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">in-depth preview</a> for a detailed look at the service, and simply leave a comment after the break to be entered to win -- after checking that you meet the entry requirements, of course.</p>

To the delight of shopaholics everywhere, Visa has announced that it's jumped on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/19/a-week-with-google-wallet-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Wallet</a> bandwagon -- giving card users access to the snazzy, new NFC payment system. Much like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/15/mastercard-demos-google-wallet-qkr-platform-for-mobile-payments/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MasterCard's announcement</a> last week, the licensing agreement will allow Visa users to link their credit, debit and prepaid cards to Google's offering for fast mobile payments in places that accept the service. The credit card company has dabbled in mobile payments before through <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/23/visa-rolling-out-paywave-mobile-phone-payments-in-ny-subway-and/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">payWave</a>, but with plans to integrate into GW, we'll surely be seeing more of it in the near future. As momentum over the NFC-powered mobile phones grows, it will be interesting to see if the <em>Real Housewives</em> can part with their phones long enough for their assistants to pay for those Manolos. Check out the full PR after the break.

Contactless payments have been something of a curiosity in the credit card industry. MasterCard's PayPass has been around for the better part of a decade, but merchants and banks alike seem hesitant to adopt the technology required to make the system work, and inconsistent implementation adds to the confusion -- particularly for customers. Google's new mobile phone-based <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/google-wallet-mobile-payment-service-google-offers-announced/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Wallet</a> service has the potential to transform the technology from its current status as a transaction turkey, to a future as a checkout champion. But will it work? We spent a week with a Wallet-enabled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NexusS4G/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nexus S 4G</a>, using the device to pay whenever we encountered a MasterCard PayPass terminal. Unfortunately, that wasn't often enough, limiting us to just a handful of transactions in the first week. Still, with Google just beginning to roll out the service and only a limited selection of launch partners ready to go, it's impossible to deliver a complete verdict just yet. Jump past the break for an inside look at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/GoogleWallet/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Wallet</a>, including a video of the service in action, and a brief look at what the world of contactless payments may look like in the future.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/google-wallet-hands-on-3/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Wallet hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/google-wallet-hands-on-3/4369825?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/device-2011-08-11-084240_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/google-wallet-hands-on-3/4369826?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/device-2011-08-11-084303_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/google-wallet-hands-on-3/4369827?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/device-2011-08-11-084311_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/google-wallet-hands-on-3/4369828?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/device-2011-08-11-084317_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/google-wallet-hands-on-3/4369829?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/device-2011-08-11-084323_thumbnail.png" alt="" title="" /></a></div>

Softbank customers in Japan can simply get an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/27/iphone-4-gets-stuck-with-nfc-sticker-from-japans-softbank/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC sticker</a> to add some contact-less payments to their iPhone 4, but most folks don't have it quite so easy just yet. There <em>are</em> some alternatives while you wait for Apple to hop on the NFC bandwagon, however, like this solution from <em>Unplggd</em>'s Vivian Kim. It uses one of the smaller NFC-equipped credit cards now available from some banks, which is apparently just small enough to fit under the back cover of an iPhone 4 (a clear one, in this case, to show off your cleverness). And, yes, it apparently still works just fine under there -- even if you add a case on top of it.

Isis hasn't shown us much more than a logo and a black and white rendering of its NFC-powered mobile payment system, but the outfit proved today that it has all of its ducks -- or, rather, major credit card companies -- in a row. According to the group -- a collaboration between AT&amp;T, T-Mobile, and Verizon -- Isis will launch with Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express on board. Back in May, we reported that the credit card alternative was shaking up its initial, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/atandt-t-mobile-and-verizon-announce-isis-national-mobile-commer/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Discover-only</a> platform to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/04/isis-mobile-payment-system-to-work-with-visa-and-mastercard-she/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">let the competition in</a>. Since then, the Goog's swept in with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/google-wallet-mobile-payment-service-google-offers-announced/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Wallet</a> (backed by Sprint), which also counts MasterCard as a partner. Google's already got a head start, with Wallet trials underway in New York and San Francisco, but the internet giant might just need the lead, considering the list of heavy hitters Isis has lined up for its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/06/isis-nfc-payment-system-gets-its-first-market-in-salt-lake-city/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">2012 debut</a>.

Shortly after MasterCard announced plans to become <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/26/google-wallet-mobile-payment-service-google-offers-announced/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">entangled with Google Wallet</a> (and a few months after those ambitious Isis plans were <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/04/isis-mobile-payment-system-to-work-with-visa-and-mastercard-she/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">shelved</a>), it looks as if the aforesaid company is diving into yet another mobile payment arena. And this time, it's personal. MasterCard and CSI Enterprises already offer a smattering of customized business cards for those with highly specific needs, and soon that partnership will extend to iOS, Android and BlackBerry OS. We've confirmed that the CSI Virtual MasterCard app is currently scheduled to launch in July, presumably enabling folks with a GlobalVCard to use their mobile device of choice to make payments. What's interesting here is the inclusion of RIM and iOS; there's no BlackBerry device (nor iOS device) on the market today with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/10/engadget-primed-what-is-nfc-and-why-do-we-care/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC</a>, which leads us to believe one of two things: that's either changing by July, or this here service won't rely on NFC at all. Needless to say, we'll keep you posted -- nothing like another way to more easily indebt yourself.

Certain to "Keep Austin Weird," Isis has selected the home of SXSW as its second market for a mobile payment tryout. The joint-venture backed by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/atandt-t-mobile-and-verizon-announce-isis-national-mobile-commer/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">AT&amp;T, T-Mobile, and Verizon Wireless</a> (with help from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/04/isis-mobile-payment-system-to-work-with-visa-and-mastercard-she/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MasterCard and Visa</a>), will work with local merchants and the Chamber of Commerce to deliver what it calls a "comprehensive mobile experience" by mid-2012. Isis' latest metropolitan recruit joins <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/06/isis-nfc-payment-system-gets-its-first-market-in-salt-lake-city/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Salt Lake City</a> in this experiment that will compete with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/google+wallet/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google Wallet</a> (which is endorsed by Sprint). Quick advice to Austinites: when out-of-towners begin gawking at you for getting "free" lattes and concert tickets by waving your phone about, be sure to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/10/engadget-primed-what-is-nfc-and-why-do-we-care/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">explain the wonders of NFC</a> -- it'd be a shame for them to attempt the same -- only to be taken into custody by the Austin PD. Jump the break for the PR.

There's been rumors of a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/27/google-teams-with-mastercard-and-citigroup-for-nfc-payment-demo/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Google-fied mobile payment system</a> for some time, and now it looks like the Mountain View crew is teaming up with Sprint to finally make it happen. Last month, we heard that the Now Network would bring <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/04/sprint-says-its-nfc-based-payment-service-will-launch-this-year-beat-ot/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC payments</a> to its customers this year, and <em>Bloomberg</em> reports that the partnership and payment system will make its debut on May 26th. Apparently, New York, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Washington D.C. are the first cities getting the service, which is a much broader initial footprint than its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/06/isis-nfc-payment-system-gets-its-first-market-in-salt-lake-city/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Isis mobile payment competition</a>. The anonymous sources also say that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/15/google-said-to-be-preparing-nfc-checkout-trials-for-san-francisc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Verifone</a> and Vivotech are providing the hardware and software that will let you replace your credit card with a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/08/nexus-s-4g-on-sale-today-200-at-sprint-150-at-best-buy/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nexus S</a> -- because you <em>always</em> wanted to replace your credit card with your Nexus S.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update:</strong> According to <em>All things D</em>, the payment system will be put through its paces by none other than El Goog's Executive Chairman <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/EricSchmidt/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Eric Schmidt</a> at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/AllThingsDigital/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">D9: All Things Digital</a> conference next week -- where we'll be on hand to peep the contactless payment presentation in person.

Isis, a collaborative venture between AT&amp;T, T-Mobile, Verizon and a bunch of banking big timers, has today announced the first market for its rollout of a contactless payment scheme, and it's none other than <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/26/atandt-redirecting-911-calls-from-salt-lake-city-to-seattle-worki/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Salt Lake City</a>, Utah. That'll surely raise eyebrows in locales that may consider themselves more tech-savvy, but we reckon starting off with a city of a smaller scale might be good for getting this "mobile wallet" system off the ground. And then there's the added benefit of Isis snagging a deal to enable compatibility with the entire Utah Transit Authority footprint. If all plans are executed properly, that should mean that by summer 2012 the good people of SLC will be able to NFC their way around town with just their smartphone in hand, while also swiping it through checkouts like some form of highly advanced techno-humans.

Now, it looks like that plan may be in high gear, as the <em>Wall Street Journal</em> reports that Google's secretly partnered with MasterCard and Citigroup to test out just such a system. According to the publication, the early demo pairs "one current model and many coming models of Android phones" with existing Citigroup-sponsored credit and debit cards, and is using the phones' NFC chips with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/15/google-said-to-be-preparing-nfc-checkout-trials-for-san-francisc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">those VeriFone readers</a> we recently heard about. <br />
<br />
What's more, a newly-published patent application from the crew in Mountain View may hint at the software behind such things. The application describes a service that sets up Google as a third-party broker who receives the shopping cart info of customers placing orders via a device (including those of the mobile variety), allows them to select shipping and other options, and provides the total order cost. It then collects payment, coordinates shipment, and forwards order information to the seller to complete the transaction. So companies can have Google handle all their payment-taking needs in return for getting a sneak peek at what folks are buying -- something that the WSJ's sources say might be a component of the setup Google's testing right now -- as opposed to other third-party services, like Paypal, that only obtain and exchange payment info with merchants. Looks like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/24/google-revises-internal-privacy-practices-appoints-director-of/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Alma Whitten (Google's Director of Privacy)</a> has her work cut out assuaging the concerns such a system will inevitably create in an increasingly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/privacy?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">privacy-minded populace</a>.<br />

Google does not sell hardware, Eric Schmidt <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/16/nexus-s-teaser-by-eric-schmidt-now-available-on-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">told us as much</a>, but the company has few qualms about buying the stuff up. <em>Bloomberg</em> is reporting, on the authority of a pair of well informed sources, that the Mountain View team is about to buy up "thousands" of VeriFone's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/07/verifone-puts-money-near-mouth-says-itll-include-nfc-in-all-ne/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC payment terminals</a>, with a view to installing them in stores across San Francisco and New York City. Those two technophile cities represent the most receptive audience NFC is likely to get in the US, and Google will be hoping that users there will be able to appreciate the convenience of being able to swipe their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/10/nexus-s-review/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nexus S</a> (or other similarly equipped handset) to complete payments. We already know that Schmidt and co. consider the concept of "mobile money" <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/20/eric-schmidt-lays-out-three-priorities-for-google-lte-mobile-m/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">a priority</a> and there have been rumblings of Google setting up its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/google-building-its-own-nfc-based-payments-system/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">own payment system</a>, which together make this hookup with VeriFone appear highly credible. <em>Bloomberg</em> expects the trials to commence within the next four months, just in time to make iPhone 5 users <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/14/iphone-5-wont-have-nfc-according-to-insiders-at-uk-carriers/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">green with envy</a>.

Not interested in picking up an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/06/samsung-nexus-s-utilizing-nxps-pn544-nfc-chip/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC-enabled smartphone</a>? No matter -- Morpho's got you covered. The outfit was demonstrating a newly finished Simlink NFC keyfob here at Mobile World Congress, intended to provide contactless payment capability for those who lack it in their existing mobile. Rather than stopping at just payments, this dongle also supports frequent flier cards, membership accounts and pretty much any other members-only situation that may ever use NFC check-ins and registration. There's even a WiFi module here and an onboard web server, enabling any WiFi-enabled phone to immediately see your most recent transactions as well as what data / cards you have stored on the device. We're told that the onboard battery can last around a week if you don't use it continuously, and a simple micro-USB connector is responsible for charging. The only unfortunate part is the size -- it's hardly inconspicuous, but we're guessing revision two will lose quite a bit of weight. This particular model should go on sale by the end of Q4, with pricing to be determined. Head on past the break for a brief demonstration, you big spender, you. <br />

Now that Nokia's gone all-in with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NFC/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">NFC</a> and announced that it'll be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/18/nokia-says-all-of-its-smartphones-will-support-nfc-starting-next/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">blanketing</a> its entire smartphone line with the technology next year, it's gotta do something cool with it -- after all, simply turning a phone into a digital wallet is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/23/nokia-6216-classic-packs-nfc-for-contactless-payments/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><em>so</em> 2009</a>! That seems to be where Swipe comes into play, a new software stack Espoo is teasing this week that integrates NFC payments with instant digital receipt uploads to your phone -- instead of getting a printed copy -- which boosts your treehugger street cred by leaps and bounds. Perhaps even cooler, though, the system reads the receipt once it's back on your phone and makes a note of the product's return period so that it can remind you when time's running out, perfect for getting maximum usage out of that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/N8/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">N8</a> before flipping it back from whence it came. If we had to guess, this might be unveiled in full at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NokiaWorld/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nokia World</a>, which just happens to kick off tomorrow -- and we're on the scene for all the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/13/nokias-anssi-vanjoki-resigns/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">unexpectedly</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/10/nokias-opk-is-out-replaced-by-stephen-elop-as-president-and-ce/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">drama-packed</a> action, so stay tuned. Meanwhile, follow the break for the full teaser video.

The world's foremost payment processing company has just announced that it's about to start a trial of its contactless payment system in partnership with Bank of America. Kicking off in the New York area this September and lasting through the end of the year, the scheme will most likely involve the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/18/visa-teams-with-devicefidelity-for-contactless-payments-via-micr/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">MicroSD NFC communicator</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/18/in2pay-is-the-name-of-visa-and-devicefidelitys-money-grubbing-i/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">In2Pay iPhone case</a> that DeviceFidelity has been developing for Visa. No disclosures are being made on the size of this pilot scheme, though we're told that only a "select" group of employees and customers will be getting the mobile payment chips. Don't worry if you miss out on this one, though, as a similar trial is scheduled to begin in October with US Bancorp. That should give you enough time to turn yourself into a high-rolling <em>select</em> customer, right?

Just a few short months after teaming up to bring contactless payments to any mobile <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/18/visa-teams-with-devicefidelity-for-contactless-payments-via-micr/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">with a microSD slot</a>, the two are at it again -- this time aiming for the oh-so-tantalizing iPhone market. Reportedly, the tandem is toiling away in an effort to concoct a protective <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPhone/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone</a> shell with a secure memory card that hosts Vista's contactless payment app, payWave. As it stands, the product would only function on the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS, leaving upcoming iPhone <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/18/iphone-4g-proof/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">4G / HD / Barhopper</a> buyers out in the cold. As with any other payWave-enabled handset, this would allow users to simply tap and go when checking out, a process that our pals over in Japan have had down for centuries now. If all goes well, market trials of the payment-enabled iPhone are set to begin this summer, or approximately six months too late for anyone to seriously care.

<div style="text-align: left;">We've already seen Visa <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/18/visa-teams-with-devicefidelity-for-contactless-payments-via-micr/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">team up</a> with DeviceFidelity to deliver NFC payments via microSD card, and it looks like they now have some company from First Data and Tyfone, who have just announced a partnership of their own to help bring the technology to the cellphone-toting masses. At the heart of their system is Tyfone's SideTap card made by NXP Semiconductors (pictured after the break), which is not only able to function as an actual memory card in addition to a NFC payment device, but should cost about the same as a regular memory card of the same capacity as well. Using a microSD card instead of a phone with built-in NFC technology also cuts out the need for carriers or phone manufacturers to be involved, which is apparently where First Data comes in, as it will responsible for bringing the cards to consumers (in addition to dealing with retailers, carriers and financial institutions). Complete details on a rollout still seem to be a bit up in the air, but the two companies are promising that it will hit the market in the second half of 2010, with trials slated to begin mid-year.</div>

<div style="text-align: left;">Visa may be pushing ahead to bring NFC to phones via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/18/visa-teams-with-devicefidelity-for-contactless-payments-via-micr/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">microSD cards</a>, but it looks like phones with built-in NFC capabilities have now suffered a bit of a setback, as Nokia has officially canceled its already delayed <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/23/nokia-6216-classic-packs-nfc-for-contactless-payments/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">6216 handset</a>. That phone was a rather unimpressive candy bar in most respects, but it was the first such phone that would have tied NFC payments to a carrier's SIM card, which Nokia had hoped would have been enough to at least give it a foothold, if not kick-start a wave of NFC handsets. For its part, Nokia isn't offering too many details on the reasons for the cancellation, saying only that it felt "the quality of the consumer experience was not what it needed to be," and adding that its "commitment to NFC remains as strong as ever."</div>
