  • Comix Zone coming early and free to PlayStation Plussers next week

The next set of bonuses coming to PlayStation Plus subscribers should tickle fans of old-school beat-em'-ups, as well as fans of egregious misspellings. The latest Sega title to serve as an incentive for the premium program is Comix Zone, the 1995 Genesis brawler that was notable for its clever comic-panel backdrop, as well as its inclusion of "Sketch Turner," the worst-named character in the history of written language. The game will be free for Plus members (and only Plus members) starting August 9, alongside a free DLC pack for Crash Commando and a trial for Far Cry 2. Based on the timing of the past Sega PSN releases, we'd wager Comix Zone will be available for the hoi polloi about one month later.

Today sees the release of two new PSN titles with a simplicity of purpose that we find and heartwarming -- Smash Cars and Battle Tanks. No need for high-minded prose or character development here, folks. Give us vehicles running into each other really fast, and we will be satisfied. Also new this week is the totally free Batman: Arkham Asylum "Play as Joker" DLC, a batch of Crash Commando DLC (accompanied by a price cut for the full version of the game), demos for NHL 10 and F.E.A.R. 2: Reborn, and more content for Disgaea 3 than our minds can currently comprehend. Seriously, we're going to be contemplating the uses of an "Action Prinny" for the rest of the day. Choose your platform to view the corresponding release list: (Note: Continue past the break to view both release lists.)

We got our hands on Crash Commando at E3 and were quite impressed. Since then we've had the opportunity to play a preview build to our heart's content and it's looking great. Crash Commando is a 2D multiplayer shooter with 3D graphics. It plays very similarly to Soldat but has a pinch of Warhawk in there for good measure. Gameplay consists of jetpacking around a battlefield shooting at people. The funny thing about these battlefields is that they're two-sided, so each level has a background and a foreground. You can switch between these by stepping through various doors littered throughout each level. You can see people fighting in the background in real time, helping you locate more people to shoot at. The game will ship with eight levels, ranging from a cave, a jungle fort and a dilapidated ruins. When we spoke to the producer of the game at E3, however, he was keen to tell us that the dev team is planning on plenty of post-launch downloadable content. %Gallery-28077%

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has announced that PSN's 2D shooter Crash Commando will release this December. We're currently awaiting similar confirmation from Sony America. The game features 12-player online and offline combat, along with über-violence and "a wicked sense of humour." We've heard the game called a mix of Warhawk, Soldat and Contra.Crash Commando will also include full Trophy support, stat tracking, rankings and leaderboards when it launches, though there's currently no word on price. PS3 Fanboy had some hands-on time with the title during E3, so have a look if you're curious. %Gallery-27940%

Click for high resolution image. Sony has revealed a whole load of new information about Crash Commando, an upcoming downloadable title that feels like a mix between Warhawk and Soldat. The game will feature 12-players online and offline, with bots making up the numbers if you can't get hold of eleven friends. You'll be battling it out with a multitude of weapons and vehicles, including tanks, rocket launchers and C4 in both multi- and singleplayer modes. You'll be able to practice your skills in the offline, singleplayer Boot Camp mode. Once you finally feel you're good enough to take it online, there will be full player profiles, with stat tracking, rankings and leaderboards. Crash Commando will also have full Trophy support when it launches in European territories this December. No word on a US release date yet, but expect it around the same time. Check out our E3 hands-on for more info on the game and peruse the gallery for the latest screenshots. [Via press release] %Gallery-28077%

  • PS3 Fanboy hands-on: Crash Commando

    07.22.2008

Click for high resolution image. Sony's excellent lineup of PSN games continues with the, sadly overlooked, Crash Commando. This online-only side-scrolling shooter looks like a cross between Warhawk and Soldat and promises some pick-up-and-play shooty fun when it releases at the end of the year. A five-man development team in Sweden has been working for over a year, so far, to develop Crash Commando. The game will release with eight maps, trophy support and downloadable content is already being planned. Deathmatch and team deathmatch are already included in the game and a capture the flag mode is aiming to be included for launch or post-launch DLC. Every map is "double sided," meaning that there's a front and a back and walking through doors will allow you to switch at any time. On the map we played, we could see our enemies moving around in the background, on the "other side," which gave a nice sense of depth. Movement is very free, as every character is equipped with a jetpack, allowing more time to be spent on fast paced combat. %Gallery-28077%

At their E3 press conference today, Sony announced a few new titles for PSN. And when we say they announced the titles, we mean exactly that ... they announced the titles, and practically nothing else, save for some quick video footage. The titles include: Crash Commando Fat Princess Pain: Amusement Park Rag Doll Kung Fu: Fists of Plastic These titles join the previously revealed PixelJunk Eden, Ratchet and Clank: Quest for Booty, Siren: Blood Curse and Flower among the PSN games mentioned at the conference. More on all these titles as we hear about it.
