You know -- aside from crafting one of the most hilarious Bud Light commercials in the history of Bud Light commercials. An EU-funded team has crafted a prototype device that uses a technology similar to auto-tune in order to nix cross-talk on signals that travel down fiber optic cabling. Currently, the clean up process on phase noise ends up decimating the total capacity available to travel, so far less information actually gets through the end than what you started with. Now, this here device is claiming to spit shine the noisy signals and "re-transmit them with fuller capacity." Periklis Petropoulos, a researcher on the project from the University of Southampton's Optoelectronics Research Centre, summed it up as such: "With this demonstration we've shown that it is possible to use the capabilities of the optical fiber to the full without being restricted by the capabilities of the electronics; you could say that in its final functionality, it is like auto-tune."     Try as manufacturers might, attempts at autostereoscopic (glasses-free) TV have been subpar; existing tech typically makes for messy images due to ghosting, only provides a 3D effect if you're standing in one of a very few predetermined spots (usually 8-10 viewing angles, though we've heard of 64), and reduces display resolution -- all because only some pixels can be seen from each spot. With the occasional exception, it's not terribly impressive. Scientists at the National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan are looking to change that. Rather than block light with a parallax barrier, their screen uses a matrix of specially cut prisms to reflect it, reducing ghosting to nil and maintaining display resolution by sending the same image to each viewer. Though there are still a fixed number of viewing zones, the prisms are so tiny that manufacturers can simply add more prisms to each pixel to increase that number -- with 11 prisms per pixel, researchers say such a system could support 100 simultaneous 3D moviegoers. We've no word on whether the tech is affordable or when we'll see it, but we expect it to handily beat cyborg eyeballs to market.

  • SOCOM PS2 & PSP sequels lay in wait

    Sony is looking to cash in, at least one more time on its current-gen console, with another SOCOM sequel, accompanied by a Fireteam Bravo sequel for the PSP. The formula has proved to be successful four times — 3 titles for PS2, 1 for PSP — in less than four years, which suggests that squeezing in another set of entries before the PS3 debut would be a smart move.According to an EB Games listing, which has since been pulled, SOCOM US Navy Seals Combined Assault (PS2) and SOCOM US Navy Seals Fireteam Bravo 2 (PSP) are headed to their respective platforms later this year. While we all know that trusting an EB listing is dangerous, especially one that was obviously premature, the details that were posted on the page (reproduced by PSPCave) were too exact to be mere predictions.
