We got to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/06/nikon-d4-hands-on-and-sample-images-video/">play with this tank</a> of a DSLR a bit, but sadly weren't permitted to actually publish any of the photos or video that we shot with the thing. Sure, we've seen some <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/08/nikon-d4-dslr-1080p-amazing-sample-video/">samples</a> of it in action, but it's not quite the same. Thankfully, the company made our late-February that much better, allowing us to take the D4 on a jaunt around the city, a couple of weeks ahead of its mid-March launch. We strolled around Washington Square Park and 6th avenue, with the beast of a camera in-hand, shooting tourists and scenery, before popping by a subway station to have a go with the camera's purported excellent low-light capabilities that we've been hearing so much about. Click on through to take a look at some sample video.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-sample-shots/">Nikon D4 sample shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-sample-shots/#4857200"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/nikon-d41samps800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Nikon D4 sample shots" title="Nikon D4 sample shots" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-sample-shots/#4857201"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/nikon-d42samps800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-sample-shots/#4857202"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/nikon-d43samps800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-sample-shots/#4857203"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/nikon-d44samps800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-sample-shots/#4857204"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/nikon-d45samps800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on-shots/">Nikon D4 hands-on shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on-shots/#4857150"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/nikon-d41800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Nikon D4 hands-on shots" title="Nikon D4 hands-on shots" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on-shots/#4857151"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/nikon-d42800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on-shots/#4857152"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/nikon-d43800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on-shots/#4857153"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/nikon-d44800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on-shots/#4857154"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/02/nikon-d45800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/29/nikon-d4-hands-on-with-sample-images-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nikon D4 hands-on with sample images, video</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/29/nikon-d4-hands-on-with-sample-images-video/">Nikon D4 hands-on with sample images, video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 29 Feb 2012 13:09:00 EST. With the onslaught of CES launches still several days away, the big news today is the D4, Nikon's brand new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/nikon-d4-dslr-camera/">full-frame digital SLR camera</a>. The 16.2 megapixel DSLR offers 1080/30p video capture, an extended ISO range of 100 to 204,800, a 91,000-pixel 3D color matrix meter and a top high-speed shooting option of 11 frames-per-second. And with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/23/nikon-d3-gets-the-deep-preview/">D3</a> first hitting stores nearly five years ago, this FX-mount successor was long overdue. Earlier today, Nikon held its D4 launch event in Asia, previewing the camera before a group of journalists in Hong Kong. We were on hand for a first look at the massive $6,000 pro body, and were quite pleased with what we saw. Jump past the break for our impressions.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on/">Nikon D4 Hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on/#4718974"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc4445_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on/#4718975"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc4448_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on/#4718976"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc4449_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on/#4718977"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc4450_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4-hands-on/#4718978"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/dsc4451_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/06/nikon-d4-hands-on-and-sample-images-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nikon D4 hands-on and manufacturer sample images (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/06/nikon-d4-hands-on-and-sample-images-video/">Nikon D4 hands-on and manufacturer sample images (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 06 Jan 2012 13:00:00 EST. 	<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/nikon-d4-dslr-camera/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/2012-05-05-d4501.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div>
More than two years after the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/nikon-d3s-is-officially-official-bringing-its-iso-extremes-in-l/">D3S</a> began shipping and roughly a half-<em>decade</em> after we first got a peek at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/23/nikon-d3-gets-the-deep-preview/">D3</a>, Nikon has finally announced the full-frame DSLR's long-awaited successor. As expected, the Nikon D4 boosts both megapixel rating (to 16.2) and extended ISO (204,800 at Hi-4), and includes a brand new full-frame FX-format sensor. Video capture also jumped from 720/24p to 1080/30p, but so did the camera's somewhat-out-of-reach price tag -- you'll be dropping $5,999.95 when the D4 hits stores in late February. You're clearly not spending all that hard-earned photo dough for nothing, though. There's also a 91k-pixel RGB 3D Color Matrix Meter III, compared to a 1,005-pixel meter in the D3S, enabling the camera to evaluate the color and brightness of a scene with much greater precision, yielding much more accurate results. And since the D4 reportedly offers phenomenal low-light performance, you'll probably be using it quite often in the dark -- letting you get good use out of the new back-lit controls.<br />
<br />
Photographers can preview images using the 921k-dot 3.2-inch LCD, which offers a 170-degree viewing angle and ambient light sensor. HD video can be previewed on the display as well, or directly through the HDMI port, which also supports uncompressed 8-bit preview video output with optional overlay. Naturally, the D4 is <em>fast</em>. It can power on and be ready to shoot in approximately 0.012 seconds, and can capture 10 fps stills at full resolution with full auto focus and exposure. Willing to lock both AF and AE? The D4 <em>goes to 11.</em> A new 51-point AF system offers full cross-type focusing that's compatible with all Nikon lenses, even when paired with a teleconverter. The D4 includes two card slots with support for both UDMA-7 CF and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/08/compactflash-association-readies-next-gen-xqd-format-promises-w/">recently-announced</a> XQD format, which brings write speeds of up to 125 MB/s -- enough to capture 105 consecutive RAW images at 10 fps. You'll find full details and specs on the D4 just past the break, along with an overview of Nikon's new AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G FX-format lens, which is set to ship in March for $499.95.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4/">Nikon D4</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4/#4714296"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/nikond402eng-1325683297_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4/#4714297"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/nikond403eng-1325683297_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4/#4714298"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/nikond404eng-1325683297_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4/#4714299"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/nikond405eng-1325683298_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d4/#4714300"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/nikond406eng-1325683298_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/nikon-d4-dslr-camera/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nikon announces D4 DSLR camera: full-frame 16.2 MP sensor, 204,000 extended ISO, $6,000 price tag</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/nikon-d4-dslr-camera/">Nikon announces D4 DSLR camera: full-frame 16.2 MP sensor, 204,000 extended ISO, $6,000 price tag</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 23:01:00 EST. Hey there, high roller. If you splurged on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cowon/">Cowon</a>'s beautiful, profoundly expensive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/01/cowon-d3-plenue-priced-at-370-or-100-per-inch-of-amoled/">D3 Plenue</a>, you've probably wondered when you'd get an upgrade from Android 2.1. Well, that day is today, as the company's released an updated, Gingerbread-based firmware. The new code adds some miscellaneous new features - a sleep timer for the music app, some more music search options, and VoIP - and ought to improve system stability. It also promises better touch responsiveness, which we hope alleviates <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/29/cowon-d3-plenue-android-pmp-review-video/">the sluggishness</a> that made the little PMP so difficult to use. If similar frustration with your D3 rendered it an elegant paperweight, glide over to the source link to see if the update soothes your pain.<br />
<br />

One thing's for sure: Cowon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/01/cowon-d3-plenue-priced-at-370-or-100-per-inch-of-amoled/">D3 Plenue</a> is vastly different (and superior) to the firm's AMOLED-equipped <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/29/cowon-s9-review/">S9</a> from 2008, and it's also catering to a vastly different sect of consumers compared to its ultra-capacious <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/01/cowon-x7-pmp-review/">X7</a>. This beaut is one of the few pocketable Android-based PMPs available today, offering up a gorgeous 3.7-inch AMOLED capacitive touchpanel (800 x 480), dedicated media controls along the edges, Android 2.1, WiFi, 1080p video output, a built-in microphone and a battery good for up to 21 hours of use. As with every other Cowon player, this one also supports every file format ever conceived, including FLAC, APE and OGG -- three that the audiophiles in attendance will definitely recognize. The real question here is simple: does having Android on a non-connected (cellular, anyway) device really do you much good, and moreover, is it really worth the $357.99 asking price? We'll discuss these points and more in our full review just after the break. Join us, won't you?<br />

Want yourself a "Prestige" portable media player to make even legit smartphones blush in envy? Then the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/28/cowon-d3-plenue-pmp-runs-android-looks-like-a-phone-totally-is/">D3 Plenue</a> from Cowon might just be for you, what with its 1080p video playback, 32GB of storage, Android 2.1 OS, and 3.7-inch, 800 x 480 AMOLED display. It's just that today we're finding the Prestige label also extends to its price, which Amazon has set at a mighty $370. That's not terrible when contrasted against unsubsidized pricing for comparable smartphones, but then this <em>isn't</em> a smartphone. Availability of the D3 Plenue is limited to an undated pre-order for the moment, giving you at least a little more time to deliberate on the value this souped-up PMP represents.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/01/cowon-d3-plenue-priced-at-370-or-100-per-inch-of-amoled/">Cowon D3 Plenue priced at $370, or $100 per inch of AMOLED</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 01 Feb 2011 05:28:00 EST. Ever find yourself wanting a phone that, you know, couldn't make calls? Welcome to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cowon">Cowon</a> D3 Plenue, an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/android">Android</a>-having <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pmp">PMP</a> that looks so good we want to press it to our cheeks and say "Hello." Sadly there'd be nobody there, nobody but up to 32GB of Britney, Katy, Mandy, and whoever else you'd like stored on microSD and played back over a 3.7-inch, 800 x 480 AMOLED. That display isn't capable of doing your 1080p files justice, but the PMP itself is, and with HDMI output it can send that footage to an external panel. There's also WiFi, a T-DMB tuner, Bluetooth, and even an accelerometer. In case you're wondering it's Android 2.1 hiding behind that skin and, while Cowon promises "Apps," we're a little doubtful they'll be of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/androidmarket">Market</a> variety.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/12/28/cowon-d3-plenue-pmp-runs-android-looks-like-a-phone-totally-is/">Cowon D3 Plenue PMP runs Android, looks like a phone, totally isn't</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 28 Dec 2010 17:02:00 EST. Nikon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/D3S/">D3S</a> didn't exactly emerge out of nowhere, but the DSLR's boosted ISO ceiling of over 100,000 (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/nikon-d3s-is-officially-official-bringing-its-iso-extremes-in-l/">102,400</a>, if we're being precise) has certainly shaken up the industry. Nikon claims that it's set a new bar for low-light performance and raw speed in the crowded DSLR arena, and we were tickled pink when given the chance to see if this thing was worth its weight in gold. Now, the master photogs over at DP Review have already broken down the nitty-gritty details in an <a href="http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3s/">exhaustive 34 page critique</a>, but for those just looking for a little insight -- and perhaps a short answer to "should I buy this?" -- we've got exactly what you're looking for. Head on past the break for two distinct takes on Nikon's most capable shooter yet -- and some thoughts on how Nikon's latest monster professional cam will radically change the consumer camera as well.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3s-unboxing-and-hands-on/">Nikon D3S unboxing and hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3s-unboxing-and-hands-on/#2485550"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/11/2009-11-27ds3unbox-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3s-unboxing-and-hands-on/#2485549"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/11/2009-11-27ds3unbox-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3s-unboxing-and-hands-on/#2485548"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/11/2009-11-27ds3unbox-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3s-unboxing-and-hands-on/#2485547"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/11/2009-11-27ds3unbox-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3s-unboxing-and-hands-on/#2485545"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/11/2009-11-27ds3unbox-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/shooting-around-with-the-nikon-d3s-the-field-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Shooting around with the Nikon D3S: the field review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/21/shooting-around-with-the-nikon-d3s-the-field-review/">Shooting around with the Nikon D3S: the field review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 21 Jun 2010 16:27:00 EST. Oh sure, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nikon/">Nikon</a>'s got its own solution for adding native geotagging to your existing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSLR/">DSLR</a>, but the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/02/nikons-geotagging-gp-1-dongle-now-available/">GP-1 dongle</a> definitely has its drawbacks. Aside from sucking down around 4x more power than Gisteq's new PhotoTrackr Plus, it also eliminates the ability to use a dedicated flash in the hotshoe while capturing GPS data. Moreover, it has to warm up every time you turn the camera on / off, and there's just 18 tracking channels compared to the Gisteq's 44. Regardless of the back and forth, we <i>do</i> appreciate the PhotoTrackr Plus' ability to plug directly into the 10-pin terminal that few amateurs even think to recognize, though we do fear that the reliance on Bluetooth could cause issues if you stray too far from the transceiver. Still, this newfangled dongle is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/25/phototrackr-mini-geotagging-device-shrinks-down-adds-mac-and-ra/">far superior</a> to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/25/gisteq-phototracker-brings-gps-phototagging-to-the-masses/">past iterations</a>, both of which simply logged data as you went and then added metadata after you synced the information with your images via PC; this dongle, however, embeds the data right away into every image. Better still, there's even a price advantage to going third party -- Nikon's aging GP-1 is pushing $200 on many webstores, while the Gisteq apparatus can be procured right now for $179. Take your pic, as they say.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/30/phototrackr-plus-brings-geotagging-to-nikon-dslrs-leaves-your-h/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PhotoTrackr Plus brings geotagging to Nikon DSLRs, leaves your hotshoe open</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/30/phototrackr-plus-brings-geotagging-to-nikon-dslrs-leaves-your-h/">PhotoTrackr Plus brings geotagging to Nikon DSLRs, leaves your hotshoe open</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 30 May 2010 04:28:00 EST. One day after having been <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/13/nikon-d3s-leaked-by-uk-press-expected-to-ship-december-with-imp/">leaked to the wilds</a> and then <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/nikon-d3s-is-officially-official-bringing-its-iso-extremes-in-l/">officially announced</a>, Nikon has opened the floodgates on the upcoming D3S, an upgrade to last year's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nikon,d3">D3</a> that was oh <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/18/nikon-d3-review-round-up-survey-says-youll-want-one/">so warmly received</a>. Early indications are the D3S is just as hot, adding a 720p24 video mode to the mix and allowing use of the camera's full aperture and ISO range while recording. Important, that, because this camera offers a ludicrously high maximum ISO value of 102,400 -- approaching night vision territory. That's thanks to a new 12.1 megapixel sensor, which is paired with a vibration mechanism to reduce dust. How well does the sensor perform? Nobody is apparently allowed to show us just yet, but tell us they have, with words like "simply incredible" and "fantastic feat" used to describe its low-light shooting. Seems we'll have to wait a bit longer for full reviews, but these previews will surely whet your appetite. Oh, and the cost? A mere $5,199.95.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/27891/nikon-d3s-dslr-photo-gallery">Read</a> - Pocket-lint Nikon D3s hands-on<br /><a href="http://www.dpreview.com/news/0910/09101403NikonD3shandson.asp">Read</a> - Digital Photography Review D3s hands-on<br /><a href="http://www.letsgodigital.org/en/23422/nikon-d3s-review/">Read</a> - LetsGoDigital Nikon D3s "review"<br /><a href="http://www.techradar.com/news/photography-video-capture/cameras/hands-on-nikon-d3s-review-642433">Read</a> - TechRadar Nikon D3s "review"<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/nikons-d3s-officially-announced-previewed-extensively/">Nikon's D3S officially announced, previewed extensively</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 14 Oct 2009 07:23:00 EST. Impending Nikon announcements? You don't have to tell the <em>British Journal of Photography</em>, who today published an article dated for tomorrow (oops!) all about its time with the as-of-yet unannounced <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/D3s/">D3s</a>. So what can we glean from this report? For starters, standard ISO settings go as high as 12,800 (low is 200) and can be further boosted to an incredulous 102,400. The 12 megapixel DSLR also touts a 720p 24 frames per second HD video capture mode, and as far as price and release date are concerned, look for it this December, at least in the UK, for &pound;4200 (about $6,685 in US). <em>Nikon Rumors </em>is expecting an official announcement from tonight, so perhaps we won't be waiting too long -- in the meantime, that site's also hosting pics of the camera supposedly in the wild doing a photoshoot in Barcelona. Enjoy!<br />

The D3s is expected to add 1080p video and an 14fps burst mode to the D3, as well as a 1.6x crop mode, but other than that we don't know too much. In this case, we're proud to present to you the Wasabi DX. Like many a drivechip, this one promises to hack the "unhackable" Wii, sporting plug and play installation on your console's (DMS, D2A, D2B, D2C, D2C2, D2E, epoxy D2E, or D2nothing / D3) drive. The firmware is stored in flash and can be upgraded from DVD, or downgraded (if you ever need to do that) from a backup on the chip itself. Like Wasabi's previous offering, drive read speeds are limited to 3x, which might effect some games, but you were probably expecting that anyways. Pretty exciting, huh? No word on pricing or availability yet, but the company says to expect all that "soonish."<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gaming/" rel="tag">Gaming</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/29/wasabi-dx-modchip-lets-you-hack-the-unhackable-wii-dream-the/">Wasabi DX modchip lets you hack the 'unhackable' Wii, dream the impossible dream</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 29 Jan 2009 10:43:00 EST. At this point, we're sorta surprised you can't just look askance at a Wii and set it to running homebrew with your penetrating gaze alone -- it seems like everything else has been accomplished in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/wiihack">hacking</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/wiimod">modding</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/04/canadian-kiddo-goes-absolutely-bonkers-upon-receiving-wii-for-ch/">general humiliation</a> of Nintendo's little console. Brought to us by the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/wiikey">WiiKey</a> folks, DriveKey is a wire-free, solder-free, brain-free method for hacking any Wii on the market, especially those pesky new ones with "epoxy" drives or the dreaded hack-proof "D3" drives. DriveKey acts as a simple passthrough for the DVD connector cable, tweaking certain functions to allow for a bit more freedom in your Wii experience. Unfortunately, DriveKey limits the DVD drive to 2x read speeds, which might make certain games unplayable, and it also can't be flash upgraded, unlike the WiiKey before it, to add more functionality or fend off a theoretical hack-buster update from Nintendo -- though this hasn't proved much of a problem for similar hacks. The chips go for around $70. Install videos after the break.<br />

When we asked how you'd <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/10/how-would-you-change-nikons-d90/">change</a> Nikon's 720p-recording <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/D90/">D90</a> DSLR, many of you globe-trotting photogs let out wistful sighs, gazed at the brightest star, and wished with all your might for automatic geotagging of photos. Like some trickster genie, Nikon is granting your wishes, but we're not sure the GP-1 GPS add-on is exactly what you had in mind. It slots into the hot-shoe on most cameras (clipping onto the strap for a few) and uses an unwieldy looking cable to connect to the body of your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d200">D200</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d3">D3</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d700">D700</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d90">D90</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d300">D300</a>, or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d3x">D3X</a>. We can't say that we're particularly fond of the device's means of indicating status, either: red blinky light = no satellites; green blinky = three satellites; green solid = four satellites or more. C'mon Nikon, for $240 you couldn't integrate that cable into a hand strap and put more than two LEDs up in there? <br /><br />[Via <a href="http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/12/nikon-readies-c.html">Gadget Lab</a>]<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/02/nikons-geotagging-gp-1-dongle-now-available/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nikon's geotagging GP-1 dongle now available</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gps/" rel="tag">GPS</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/02/nikons-geotagging-gp-1-dongle-now-available/">Nikon's geotagging GP-1 dongle now available</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 02 Dec 2008 10:43:00 EST. <div align="left">While this rumor hasn't been running quite as long as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/03/19/morgan-stanley-analysts-claim-apple-is-at-work-on-iphone/">original iPhone rumor</a>, we've been brushing off whispers of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/15/24-4-megapixel-nikon-d3x-dslr-in-the-works/">D3x</a> for a really, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/09/nikon-d3-dslr-rumors-running-rampant/">really long time</a>. For what it's worth, the latest tidbit actually seems to have some teeth, with one eagle-eyed tipster noting that the website in the read link was alive momentarily, then canned inexplicably. He managed to grab the image you see above (but not the whole site?), and he swears up and down it wasn't the Eggnog distorting his judgment. We'll see, won't we?<br /></div>

Now that Nikon has deftly slipped the full frame (FX) D700 into the already tight slot separating its mid-range DX <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d300">D300</a> and pro FX <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/18/nikon-d3-review-round-up-survey-says-youll-want-one/">D3</a>, we know what you're thinking. Huh? Fortunately, both Rob Galbraith and <em>DP Review</em> have given this a thorough analysis along with a titillating preview courtesy of <em>DP Review</em>. As Rob puts it, "If you own a D3 and a D300, then you have in two separate bodies most of the key bits and pieces that comprise the D700." While the choice between the $1,800 D300 and $3,000 D700 is more clear, prospective $5,000 D3 buyers won't be blamed if they profess a desire to hold-out for the 24.39 megapixel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d3x">D3X</a> expected <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/30/sonys-24-81-megapixel-cmos-sensor-going-pro-this-year/">within the next 12 months</a>. <br /><br /><a href="http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=7-9311-9483">Read</a> -- Rob Galbraith's take <br /><a href="http://www.dpreview.com/previews/nikond700/">Read</a> -- DP Review preview<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/01/nikon-d700-previewed-demystified/">Nikon D700 previewed, demystified</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 01 Jul 2008 02:24:00 EST. Some entirely too ingenious hackers have found a reference to the rumored D3X deep within the bowels of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/D3/">Nikon's D3</a> firmware. The reference includes a list of resolutions available to the upcoming shooter, and it's apparently set to max out at a potentially <em>Higgs Boson</em><em>-inducing</em> 24.4 megapixels. Word has it that this sensor is likely a variant of the megapixel monster behind <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/22/sonys-25-megapixel-alpha-a900-to-arrive-in-august-or-september/">Sony's upcoming A900</a>, but since this is all being extrapolated from a few numbers hidden in some firmware, we're going to try not to get too ahead of ourselves at this point.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/15/24-4-megapixel-nikon-d3x-dslr-in-the-works/">24.4 megapixel Nikon D3X DSLR in the works?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 15 Apr 2008 22:19:00 EST. <div align="left">We've already seen it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/23/nikon-d3-gets-the-deep-preview/">previewed</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/04/nikon-d3-full-frame-dslr-unboxed/">unboxed</a>, but now that Nikon's super high-end D3 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d3">DSLR</a> has been out for a little while, we're starting to get some full-on reviews of the camera and, as you might have guessed if you've been lucky enough to get your hands on one, there's plenty of consensus going on. Indeed, the praise being heaped on the camera is among the loftiest we've seen, with Photography Blog calling it "pretty much peerless," Think Camera declaring that "the files coming out of the Nikon D3 look better than any camera we've seen to date," and Ken Rockwell flat out calling it "the <font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">best camera ever made by Nikon." Needless to say, the upsides to the camera are a little long to list here, but it particularly fares well when it comes to rapid-fire image capture and low light photography, which makes it especially well-suited to press photographers. The biggest single complaint the reviewers could find was a lack of any built-in sensor cleaning technology, with only a couple of minor design flaws (like a lack of a spring inside the CF card door) attracting their attention otherwise. There's also, of course, that nearly $5,000 price tag, but we're guessing anyone actually in the market for the camera make do with that in turn for the results they'll get.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews_nikon_d3.php">Read</a> - Photography Blog (5 out of 5)<br /><a href="http://www.thinkcamera.com/news/article/mps/UAN/690/v/1/">Read</a> - Think Camera (9 out of 10)<br /><a href="http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d3.htm">Read</a> - KenRockwell.com ("</font><font face="Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif">the best camera ever made by Nikon")</font></div>

So it looks like the first lucky individuals have started receiving their Nikon <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/D3/">D3</a>s in the mail -- lucky not just because they're the proud new owner of a 12.1 megapixel full frame DSLR with 6400 ISO, 51-point autofocus, two CF slots, HDMI, and a 3-inch live view LCD, but lucky because, you know, they can afford to spend $5,000 on a camera. For those of us who can only aspire to possess such luxuries, there are always a bunch of nice <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/unboxing/">unboxing </a>shots to really help flesh out our weird gadget fantasies. You can check out another such pic after the break, before hitting the Read link for an entire D3 gallery including a few images of those <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/23/nikon-officially-announces-d3-and-d300-lenses/">new AF-S NIKKOR lenses</a>...<br /><br />[Thanks, Andrew]<br /><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3-unboxing-1/">Nikon D3 unboxing</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3-unboxing-1/#518141"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/12/nikond3unbox1020071204_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3-unboxing-1/#518138"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/12/nikond3unbox1120071204_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3-unboxing-1/#518116"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/12/nikond3unbox120071204_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3-unboxing-1/#518129"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/12/nikond3unbox1220071204_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d3-unboxing-1/#518140"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2007/12/nikond3unbox1320071204_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/04/nikon-d3-full-frame-dslr-unboxed/">Nikon D3 full frame DSLR unboxed</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Dec 2007 12:24:00 EST. Is this a teaser ad for the Nikon D3, a pro-level DSLR <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/13/nikon-getting-set-to-unveil-next-gen-professional-dslr/">the subject</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/09/nikon-d3-dslr-rumors-running-rampant/">of a swirling whirlwind of rumors</a>? If this isn't fake, this would be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/09/nikon-d3-dslr-rumors-running-rampant/">the</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/13/nikon-getting-set-to-unveil-next-gen-professional-dslr/">third</a> (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/08/23/nikon-striking-back-with-the-d3-a-new-15-megapixel-digital/">fourth</a>?) report we've seen pointing to the existence of such a camera. Just so you know, the text apparently points out the following specs: 3.0-inch LCD, 9 frames per second shooting, and 51 Autofocus Points. Not bad, but what's the price?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/19/nikon-d3-teaser-ad-leaked/">Nikon D3 teaser ad leaked?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 19 Aug 2007 18:45:00 EST. Just days after getting wind of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/09/nikon-d3-dslr-rumors-running-rampant/">D3 rumors galore</a>, a "photo editor at a major newspaper" has tipped us on a phone call he received from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nikon/">Nikon</a> in which his presence was requested at a meeting where a "new professional camera that is leaps and bounds better than anything <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Canon/">Canon</a> is offering" would be showcased. As expected, that's about all the details he could pry from the caller, but since the meeting is purportedly scheduled for June 26th, at least we've got some sort of timeframe to get our hopes up about.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/13/nikon-getting-set-to-unveil-next-gen-professional-dslr/">Nikon getting set to unveil next-gen professional DSLR?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 13 Jun 2007 14:48:00 EST. It sure feels like we've <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/20/nikon-teases-about-upcoming-10-2-megapixel-dslr/">been around</a> this block <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/08/more-nikon-d80-dslr-deets-leaked/">before</a>, eh? Nevertheless, it seems that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/08/23/nikon-striking-back-with-the-d3-a-new-15-megapixel-digital/">ever-popular D3 rumors</a> are cropping up again en masse, and while there's still no true signs of an imminent release, a whole heap of fanboys and girls are doing all they can to will it into production. A smattering of message boards are harping on the "forthcoming" high-end DSLR from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nikon/">Nikon</a>, stating hopes that it'll sport 18.7-megapixels, a nearly full frame sensor, and an uncanny ability to cope with low-light conditions. As expected, guesstimates surrounding a release date are literally all over the Gregorian calendar, but majority sects believe that a summertime launch is definitely plausible. So if you're game for getting swept up in all the commotion, be sure and hit the read link for all the unconfirmed mayhem you can stand.<br /><br />[Image courtesy of <a href="http://davidmcghee.net/">David McGhee</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/06/09/nikon-d3-dslr-rumors-running-rampant/">Nikon D3 DSLR rumors running rampant</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 09 Jun 2007 10:13:00 EST. Remember that ridiculously-sized but utterly awesome <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/20/seitz-6x17-digital-shoots-at-160-megapixels/">Seitz 6x17 Digital</a> that we showed you yesterday? Well, <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/seitz">Seitz</a> has another one to wave around at this year's <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/photokina">Photokina</a>. This time, though, it's a 360-degree cam that'll capture 470 million pixels worth of color and light, and furthermore, will complete that task in two seconds -- less than the amount of time it's taken you to read half of this paragraph. Like the 6x17, the Roundshot D3 has a ISO range from 500 to 10,000, accepts lenses from 24mm to 250mm and comes with a maxed out Mac mini to act as its oversized flash card. The D3 is more expensive than the 6x17, however, with the mobile version taking a sizeable 46,900 francs ($37,463) from that numbered Swiss bank account of yours, while the studio version comes in at 43,700 Swiss francs ($34,906). In either case, you'll probably want to head over to the Seitz site to get in line to pre-order this bad boy, which is due to hit the streets of Geneva by early 2007. Oh yeah, and make sure to catch a big pic of the D3 on the next page.<br /><br /><a href="http://www.roundshot.ch/xml_1/internet/de/application/d438/d925/f933.cfm">Read</a><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/21/seitz-roundshot-d3-take-a-360-degree-panorama-in-two-seconds-fl/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Seitz Roundshot D3: take a 360-degree panorama in two seconds flat</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/21/seitz-roundshot-d3-take-a-360-degree-panorama-in-two-seconds-fl/">Seitz Roundshot D3: take a 360-degree panorama in two seconds flat</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 21 Sep 2006 20:06:00 EST.
