According to <em>Electronista</em>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nikon/">Japanese camera giant</a> added both of its aforementioned DSLRs to the "old products" section on its motherland site. Given how often we see products get refreshed, it shouldn't come as a huge surprise -- especially when we've seen the D700's expected successor <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/11/20/is-this-nikons-d800-dlsr/">hanging out in the wild</a> many times before. Keep in mind that Nikon recently took the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/06/nikon-d4-hands-on-and-sample-images-video/">wraps off its D4</a>, so perhaps it's just a good ol' sign the new more-compact flavors are looming just around the corner. If you're going to go to the trouble of sending a camera to the edge of space, you might as well send one capable of doing the trip justice, right? That hasn't always been the case with similar DIY attempts (for obvious reasons), but the team behind the so-called Cygnus "spacecraft" decided to go all out when they sent their weather balloon / beer cooler contraption aloft this month to photograph the curvature of the Earth. In this case, going all out meant sending a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d300s">Nikon D300s </a>DSLR equipped with Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens, which managed to capture some stunning pictures like the one you see above -- although some got a bit obscured by ice build-up. There's more where that came from at the Flickr link below, and you can check out a video of the launch after the break.<br />

Oh sure, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nikon/">Nikon</a>'s got its own solution for adding native geotagging to your existing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSLR/">DSLR</a>, but the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/02/nikons-geotagging-gp-1-dongle-now-available/">GP-1 dongle</a> definitely has its drawbacks. Aside from sucking down around 4x more power than Gisteq's new PhotoTrackr Plus, it also eliminates the ability to use a dedicated flash in the hotshoe while capturing GPS data. Moreover, it has to warm up every time you turn the camera on / off, and there's just 18 tracking channels compared to the Gisteq's 44. Regardless of the back and forth, we <i>do</i> appreciate the PhotoTrackr Plus' ability to plug directly into the 10-pin terminal that few amateurs even think to recognize, though we do fear that the reliance on Bluetooth could cause issues if you stray too far from the transceiver. Still, this newfangled dongle is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/25/phototrackr-mini-geotagging-device-shrinks-down-adds-mac-and-ra/">far superior</a> to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/04/25/gisteq-phototracker-brings-gps-phototagging-to-the-masses/">past iterations</a>, both of which simply logged data as you went and then added metadata after you synced the information with your images via PC; this dongle, however, embeds the data right away into every image. Better still, there's even a price advantage to going third party -- Nikon's aging GP-1 is pushing $200 on many webstores, while the Gisteq apparatus can be procured right now for $179. Take your pic, as they say.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/30/phototrackr-plus-brings-geotagging-to-nikon-dslrs-leaves-your-h/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>PhotoTrackr Plus brings geotagging to Nikon DSLRs, leaves your hotshoe open</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/30/phototrackr-plus-brings-geotagging-to-nikon-dslrs-leaves-your-h/">PhotoTrackr Plus brings geotagging to Nikon DSLRs, leaves your hotshoe open</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 30 May 2010 04:28:00 EST. Nikon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/D300S/">D300S</a> isn't exactly tailor made for D300 owners, but for those waiting patiently to jump into the semi-pro DSLR game, it offers up a pretty delightful array of specs. Boasting SD and CF slots, a 720p movie mode and 12.3 megapixels of sharp shooting goodness, this here cam received <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/18/nikon-d300s-review-roundup-its-awesome-but-d300-is-better/">overwhelmingly positive reviews</a> late last year. Strategically positioned between the full-frame D700 and the lesser-specced D90, we're sure the D300S found its way into quite a few hearts (and under quite a few trees) between then and now. If you've been firing off snaps with one of these for a few months now, we're curious to know how you'd tweak things if the power were yours. Does the "S" really add enough to the D300 package to warrant the boost in price? How's the image quality? Is the video mode a-okay for your purposes? Spill your heart out in comments below -- we're here to hold your hand if necessary.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/29/how-would-you-change-nikons-d300s/">How would you change Nikon's D300S?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 29 Jan 2010 22:52:00 EST. You'll know from our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/07/canon-eos-7d-gets-high-marks-all-around/">Canon 7D review roundup</a> that these semi-pro DSLR reviews tend to take a little while longer to cook than ones for, say, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/18/ati-radeon-hd-5970-worlds-fastest-graphics-card-confirmed/">the world's latest, fastest graphics card</a>. That means we're looking at analyses of a shooter that's been out for a while, but boy are they thorough. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/d300s">D300S</a> (our unboxing can be found <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/31/nikon-d300s-unboxing-and-hands-on/">here</a>) is Nikon's gentle massaging of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/21/nikon-d300-gets-reviewed/">D300</a> formula for success -- with added <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/25/nikon-d90s-720p-movie-mode-gets-crituqued/">720p video recording</a> and an extra frame for a 7fps burst mode -- and that's borne out by the reviews. You're still getting an outstanding 12.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor, 51-point AF, and a sturdy weather-proofed body, but question marks remain as to whether the new additions offer enough of an upgrade from the D300. The HD video recording is hamstrung by a mono mic and a frankly silly 5 minute maximum clip length (a limitation not present on direct competitors from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/canon-eos-50d-review-roundup/">Canon</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/05/20/pentax-gets-official-with-14-6mp-k-7-dslr-hd-movies-hdr-mode/">Pentax</a>), but the addition of a second memory card slot (now offering SD as well as CF storage) and a dedicated Live View button along with purportedly improved noise performance could just make the difference for new buyers. Nikon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/D300s/">D300s</a> has been filtering out to select retail locations <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/28/nikon-d300s-spotted-and-tested-at-best-buy-with-its-little-broth/">for a few days now</a>, and judging by the box that just arrived on our doorstep, we'd say Nikon (just barely) kept its promise of having these things out by the end of August. The semi-pro body is significantly more sturdy and somewhat heavier than our in-house <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/D90/">D90</a>, though the rear LCD sure looks <em>awfully similar</em>. We're planning on giving the 12.3 megapixel CMOS sensor and 720p movie mode a go, but for now, feel free to peruse the gallery below to see exactly what a penny under $1,800 gets you in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DSLR/">DSLR</a> world these days.<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-unboxing-and-hands-on/">Nikon D300s unboxing and hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-unboxing-and-hands-on/#2246111"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/08/nikon-d300s-hands-on--(1)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-unboxing-and-hands-on/#2246119"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/08/nikon-d300s-hands-on--(6)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-unboxing-and-hands-on/#2246118"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/08/nikon-d300s-hands-on--(3)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-unboxing-and-hands-on/#2246113"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/08/nikon-d300s-hands-on--(9)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-unboxing-and-hands-on/#2246112"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/08/nikon-d300s-hands-on--(2)_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/31/nikon-d300s-unboxing-and-hands-on/">Nikon D300s unboxing and hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 31 Aug 2009 12:57:00 EST. If you were wondering when you'd be able to get your hands on the Nikon <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nikond300s">D300s</a> and its 720p/24 movie mode, the answer is... yesterday, apparently. The cam was spotted (along with the lower-rent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nikond3000">D3000</a>) at a big box Best Buy, and a bit of testing was performed -- an admittedly limited bit, but there's only so much you can do when the cam is bolted to those annoying six-inch tethers. The updated video recording mode was the thing that underwent most scrutiny, and while the new auto-focus seemed to work reasonably well (if slowly -- and noisily) on stationary objects, swinging the camera back and forth resulted in the same jelly-time sloshing effect we've seen on the <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/nikond5000">D5000</a> and <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/nikond90">D90</a> before it, as seen in the video embedded below. Maybe its time for that 12.3 megapixel CMOS to hit the gym and tone up a bit, Nikon.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/28/nikon-d300s-spotted-and-tested-at-best-buy-with-its-little-broth/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nikon D300s spotted and tested at Best Buy with its little brother, still does that jelly video thing</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/28/nikon-d300s-spotted-and-tested-at-best-buy-with-its-little-broth/">Nikon D300s spotted and tested at Best Buy with its little brother, still does that jelly video thing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 28 Aug 2009 06:52:00 EST. What better way to show off your company's latest DSLR than by giving it to a couple of professional photographers to work their magic? Nikon's done just that, handing off its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/30/nikon-d300s-officially-announced-720p-24-movie-mode-with-auto/">just-announced</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/D300s/">D300s</a> to noted photojournalist Ami Vitale and sports photographer Robert B&ouml;sch. The pair submitted stills and videos from their trial run, and the results are unsurprisingly impressive -- there's only one noticeable instance of rolling shutter, in the beginning of B&ouml;sch's video with the helicopter blades. Of course, there's no telling how much post-production work went into these pieces, and let's not forget these are pros in their element -- average Joe isn't gonna be able to pick up this camera and produce the same results. Footage after the break, or hit up the read link to see all the impressions and sample works.<br />

That's basically every would-be DSLR videographer's major wishlist right there -- sure, 1080p would have been nice, but we'll take better sound over a couple more lines of resolution any day. Other highlights include a 12.3 megapixel DX sensor, 51-point autofocus, and 7fps burst shooting, as well as those dual CF and SD card slots and a 920k pixel screen. Yeah, it's looking like a real beast -- that DX sensor probably doesn't have Canon 5D Mark II fans worried, but if you're looking to get into DSLR video this looks like the new cam to beat.<br /> <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: 'Lucida Grande'; font-size: 11px; white-space: pre; "><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-officially-announced-720p-24-movie-mode-with-autofocus-and-mic-input/">Nikon D300s officially announced -- 720p/24 movie mode with autofocus and mic input</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-officially-announced-720p-24-movie-mode-with-autofocus-and-mic-input/#2174952"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/nikon-d300sss-0121-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-officially-announced-720p-24-movie-mode-with-autofocus-and-mic-input/#2174953"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/nikon-d300sss-0118-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-officially-announced-720p-24-movie-mode-with-autofocus-and-mic-input/#2174954"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/nikon-d300sss-0122-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-officially-announced-720p-24-movie-mode-with-autofocus-and-mic-input/#2174942"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/nikon-d300sss-0110-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nikon-d300s-officially-announced-720p-24-movie-mode-with-autofocus-and-mic-input/#2174943"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/nikon-d300sss-0111-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></span><br /> <strong>Update:</strong> <em><a href="http://www.dpreview.com/news/0907/09073006d300Shandson.asp">Digital Photography Review</a> </em>has a brief hands-on with the camera, clarifying that the contrast-detection autofocus isn't the quickest, and like we learned with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/01/olympus-e-p1-hands-on-test-shots-and-mini-review/">Olympus E-P1</a> you'll need to use an external mic when shooting to avoid the ever-present "shhhk" sound. Nikon's D300s seems to be having a hard time staying out of the viewfinder of other cameras, as the DSLR has popped up both in a nondescript close-up shot and in the hands of the president of a Nikon distributor at a Nikon Club gather in the Philippines. Same observations as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/30/nikon-d3000-d300s-images-materialize/">last time</a>, from what we can tell it's got the same body as the D300 but with holes that suggest a mic input below the logo, although we've seen <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/12/nikon-d300s-screen-leaks-out/">hints of a SD card slot</a> in previous leaks. As for <i>when</i> we'll be seeing the official debut, <i>Nikon Rumors </i>has a pretty good track record when it comes to these things, and it's reporting with near-absolute certainty that the company has lined up a press conference that'll take place either July 29th in the UK or 30th in Stockholm, Sweden, and a second date for August 4th in Sweden. The first event is expected to be the unveiling for D300s and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/D3000/">D3000</a> and the second some new point and shoots -- or it could be the other way around. Either way, with any luck all these uncertainties will work themselves out by the end of next week at the latest.<br />

What's this? An as of yet unannounced <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Nikon/">Nikon</a> D3000 camera has allegedly popped up in press photo format, flaunting itself as what appears to be a slimmed down entry level DSLR. The gang <em>LensTip </em>have analyzed the pic pretty thoroughly against the D5000 and have concluded it's got a smaller body, no HDMI connector, no microphone (so much for a movie mode), and likely no articulating display. Additionally, we've got from <em>Nikon Rumors</em> what's purported to be our first glimpse at the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/12/nikon-d300s-screen-leaks-out/">D300s</a> body. Given the angle of the shot, the only difference we can spot is the inclusion of a microphone -- then again, it could just be some subtle image manipulation trickery from a rabid fan. See it and decide for yourself after the break.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/06/29/nikon.d3000.d300s/">Electronista</a>]<br /><br /><a href="http://lenstip.com/1735-news-Nikon_D3000_is_comming.html">Read</a> - Nikon D3000 is coming<br /><a href="http://nikonrumors.com/2009/06/29/another-nikon-d300s-picture.aspx">Read</a> - Another Nikon D300s picture<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/30/nikon-d3000-d300s-images-materialize/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Nikon D3000, D300s images materialize</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/30/nikon-d3000-d300s-images-materialize/">Nikon D3000, D300s images materialize</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 30 Jun 2009 00:37:00 EST. It's been removed now, but <em>Nikon Rumors</em> says this screenshot from a supposed Nikon D300S was briefly posted on Nikon USA's site earlier today. There's not much to go on here, but that SD icon in the corner seemingly implies the update to the <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/d300">D300</a> will somehow feature an SD slot -- whether it's in addition to CF as previously rumored is obviously up in the air. Either way, it seems like we'll find out soon enough -- stay tuned.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/12/nikon-d300s-screen-leaks-out/">Nikon D300S screen leaks out</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 12 Jun 2009 13:02:00 EST.
