Until now, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/milestone">Milestone</a> owners could do nothing but to envy <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/droid">Droid</a> users rocking the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/11/motorola-droid-android-2-2-froyo-ota-updates-are-go/">Froyo upgrade</a>; however, according to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola">Motorola's</a> recently published timeline, the former device is now slated for the same dessert party in Europe and Korea in Q4 -- specifically, "beginning at the end of this year," which could well mean the majority of users won't get the update until 2011 (!). Meanwhile, said upgrade is still "under evaluation" for Canada, Latin America, Mexico and Asia-Pacific sans Korea.<br />
<br />
But here's the real heartbreaking news from the same chart: unlike their American counterparts, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dext%2Cmotorola">Dext</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/backflip">Backflip</a> will <em>not</em> be getting an <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/eclair">Eclair</a> update in Europe, Latin American and Mexico, while Canada and Asia-Pacific still have a glimpse of hope. Sure, it's not like Motorola's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/motorola-publishes-schedule-of-android-upgrades-for-its-handsets/">earlier timeline</a> laid any concrete details for the European Dext, but there was definitely a date for the Latin America flavor. What concerns us the most is that back in January, Motorola did make a promise -- which has since been deleted but forever cached by Google -- to its European fans on Facebook: "[the] Dext will get the Android 2.1 upgrade as well." We have the full shameful statement after the break.<br />
<br />
In case you still care, other devices mentioned in the timeline include the US-only <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/devour">Devour</a> (no 2.1 update), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cliq+xt">Cliq XT</a> / <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/quench">Quench</a> (2.1 in late Q3 / early Q4; under evaluation for Canada and Asia-Pacific), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/product/droid-x">Droid X</a> (Froyo upgrade in late summer, which we <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/05/droid-x-update-to-android-2-2-coming-by-early-september/">knew</a>), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motoroi">Motoroi</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/titanium,motorola">Titanium</a> (2.2 in Q4 in Korea for both). If you're still mourning over the canned update for your Dext, let us remind you that there's no stopping you from updating your Android slider <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/22/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-not-pinch-t/">manually</a>; alternatively, there's no harm in sending <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sanjay+Jha">Sanjay</a> a nice postcard, either.<br />

Don't know about you, but our poor Motorola <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola%2Cdext">Dext</a> (or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/motorola%2Ccliq">Cliq</a> as it's know in the Land of the Free) had been left gathering dust for some time as it got unbearably laggy, even after a few wipes. We only clung onto this Android 1.5 device in the hope that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/15/motorola-publishes-schedule-of-android-upgrades-for-its-handsets/">Motorola</a> or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/08/t-mobile-roadmap-leaks-out-plenty-of-android-in-store/">T-Mobile</a> would stick to their update schedules. And boy we got lucky, as an anonymous leakster dropped off an allegedly official T-Mobile 2.1 ROM for said phone yesterday, which sounds about right when you think of the carrier's planned <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/08/t-mobile-roadmap-leaks-out-plenty-of-android-in-store/">August update</a>. Read on to find out how the new ROM's running on our Dext -- we've also got a hands-on video for you.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/">Motorola Cliq / Dext gets leaked Android 2.1 update, not pinch-to-zoom</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/#3194980"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/07/motorolacliq212010-07-22_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/#3194967"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/07/motorolacliq212010-07-22-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/#3194968"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/07/motorolacliq212010-07-22-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/#3194969"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/07/motorolacliq212010-07-22-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-and-it-works/#3194970"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/mobile.engadget.com/media/2010/07/motorolacliq212010-07-22-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/22/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-not-pinch-t/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Motorola Cliq / Dext gets leaked Android 2.1 update, not pinch-to-zoom (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/22/motorola-cliq-dext-gets-leaked-android-2-1-update-not-pinch-t/">Motorola Cliq / Dext gets leaked Android 2.1 update, not pinch-to-zoom (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 22 Jul 2010 10:31:00 EST. What's more, they'll be hitting "all three national wireless carriers" -- a little bit of a slap for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Mobilicity/">Mobilicity</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WIND/">WIND</a>, yes, but generally good news for the overwhelming majority of subscribers. Perhaps the most interesting bit here is that they've called out the DEXT by name, continuing Moto's tradition of going with European branding over American for its Canadian launches, a trend started by Telus' <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Milestone/">Milestone</a>. We don't yet know which carrier will get which phone, what they'll retail for, or precisely when they'll be on shelves, but needless to say, the Google-powered situation north of the border just got a whole lot prettier.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/03/motorola-backflip-dext-and-quench-all-inbound-for-canada-in-th/">Motorola Backflip, DEXT, and Quench all inbound for Canada in the first half of the year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 03 Mar 2010 13:19:00 EST. Remember last week, when Motorola said it was <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/08/motorola-droid-update-to-android-2-1-will-start-to-roll-out-th/">releasing an Android 2.1 update</a> for the Droid, but then <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/11/motorola-jumped-the-gun-with-details-of-droids-android-2-1-up/">totally didn't</a>? Moto tried to "explain" the situation in forums, but didn't really, edited its long-erroneous Facebook post retroactively, and ended up breaking a lot of hearts. Well, now Motorola has a new "Software Upgrade News" chart detailing planned upgrades for its Android devices. While this is certainly helpful going forward, the lack of clarification on the Droid update doesn't exactly solve the confusion that got them into this mess: Motorola is merely saying that the OTA upgrade will roll out "soon." As <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/06/motorola-backflip-now-official-launching-in-us-first-quarter/">previously promised</a>, we're also going to be getting a Cliq update to 2.1 eventually as well, which is now being pegged for Q2. Sadly, upgrades for non-US handsets are decidedly less expedient -- or not even assured -- but at least we've got something.<br />
<br />

Some interesting tidbits came out of Motorola's DEXT launch in Singapore today -- CNET Asia had a chance to sit down with Moto's Asia Pacific VP Spiro Nikolakopoulos, who said that the company would launch between 20 to 30 Android phones globally in 2010. Spiro also said that not every phone would make it to every market, so we're guessing the true number will be more like 10 if you count regional variants like the CLIQ and the DEXT as one model. Just by our count, Moto's already pretty close: off the tops of our heads we've heard of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/31/picture-of-motorola-shadow-leaked-inverted-on-taiwanese-forum/">Shadow</a>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/02/motorola-calgary-droid-devour-spotted-in-silver-bluring-it-up/">Devour</a>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/backflip">Backflip</a>, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/15/motorola-ruth-specs-outed-likely-companys-least-interesting/">Ruth</a>, and several others <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/19/motorolas-xt701-mt710-and-xt800-do-android-for-chinas-big-th/">destined for China</a> -- rather impressive for a company that was on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/14/motorola-to-lay-off-4-000-this-year/">brink of collapse</a> just a short while ago. No wonder it's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/14/motorola-pauses-split-to-mull-options/">reconsidering that spinoff</a>, eh?<br />

Android 2.0.1 is apparently "on its way" for the Milestone already with users being advised to keep an eye on Moto's Facebook page for more details; as you might recall, this is the same version the phone's American cousin <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/07/motorola-droid-getting-2-0-1-now-verizon-posts-details/">got a few weeks ago</a>. This will be followed on by 2.1 -- the version introduced on the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NexusOne/">Nexus One</a> -- "in the next 2 months." Oh, and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DEXT/">DEXT</a> owners, don't worry, you're not being left out in the cold -- Moto says you're on track to get 2.1 as well, though there's no timeline just yet<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/09/motorola-europe-says-milestone-getting-android-2-1-soon-2-0-1-e/">Motorola Europe says Milestone getting Android 2.1 soon, 2.0.1 even sooner</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 09 Jan 2010 15:46:00 EST. It's not clear how many apps in total make use of the calls, but we'd imagine they're in line to be fixed -- and thanks to the CLIQ's support for over-the-air updates, we're hoping those fixes come sooner rather than later. In the meantime, we suppose that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/droid">DROID's</a> always an option, right?<br />

Well now this is a pleasingly rapid transition from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/10/motorola-click-runs-android-headed-to-t-mobile/">announcement</a> to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/motorola-cliq-review/">review samples</a> to market availability. Motorola's Android-loving CLIQ (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/06/motorola-dext-goes-on-sale-in-the-uk-tomorrow-maybe-sneaking-ou/">already on sale</a> under the moniker DEXT in the UK), its QWERTY keyboard and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/24/motorola-impresses-with-pre-loaded-apps-list-for-cliq/">all the apps you could desire</a> are now ready to be had, should you already have an account with T-Mobile, the device's exclusive US carrier. It was expected that only pre-orders would be taken today, but it appears for all the world that T-Mobile is ready to start shipping the CLIQ to its loyal customers ahead of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/29/motorola-cliq-coming-to-t-mobile-this-november-for-200-on-contr/">November 2nd full release date</a>. Palm and Motorola have taken very different paths to get where they are today; one began life as a scrappy Valley start-up founded by a tablet computing pioneer, the other traces its roots to all the way back to the early days of consumer electronics and the automotive industry. Yet somehow, through years (decades, even) of adventure, success, and misfortune, they've found themselves in exactly the same situation here in 2009: it's do-or-die time. Palm, of course, has elected to try its hand at resurrecting the very thing that took it to superstardom in the first place -- an elegant, tightly-controlled software platform of its own with hardware to match -- while Motorola has thrown virtually all of its remaining weight behind Android in the hope that it can catch a little mojo from Google's ecosystem.<br />
<br />
For Motorola, it's the wireless equivalent of stepping up to the roulette table, putting what's left of your depleted life savings on red, and letting it ride just as you see security guards off in the distance coming to throw you -- penniless -- off the premises. It's a gamble of the highest order, but it's also a gamble Motorola's painfully aware that it needs to take. North America's only top-five handset manufacturer needs nothing less than magic (and a little luck) to earn its way back into the world's wireless elite -- and that risky play starts right here, today, with the CLIQ / DEXT.<br />
<br />
So does the CLIQ pave the way to a New Motorola, or did the RAZR's checkered legacy ultimately dig a hole too deep to escape? Read on.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/t-mobile/" rel="tag">T-Mobile</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/motorola-cliq-review/">Motorola CLIQ review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 14 Oct 2009 23:04:00 EST. Okay folks, this is the moment where hauling a spoonful of NaCl down the chute would be highly recommended. <em>DialAPhone</em> seems to have unearthed what looks like a Q4 2009 - Q1 2010 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/">Motorola</a> roadmap, and while the finds are certainly intriguing, we're still hesitant to believe this thing is legit. For starters, this is obviously a European plan, so what we're viewing here may never make the tedious journey across the pond anyway. Secondly, how many of you honestly believe Moto's cooking up a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Sholes/">Sholes</a> Tablet? Exactly. That said, we'd be the first to drool should that device (or the Motus and / or Zeppelin) launch early next year, and you can bet your bottom dollar that we'll be scraping the floor for details when CES kicks off in just a few months. <br /><br />[Thanks, dejan]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handsets/" rel="tag">Handsets</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/motorola/" rel="tag">Motorola</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/android/" rel="tag">Android</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/purported-motorola-roadmap-uncovers-sholes-tablet-motus-and-oth/">Purported Motorola roadmap uncovers Sholes Tablet, Motus and other mythical mysteries</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 14 Oct 2009 11:48:00 EST. Statesiders will have to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/29/motorola-cliq-coming-to-t-mobile-this-november-for-200-on-contr/">wait another month</a> before getting their hands on the <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/cliq">Motorola CLIQ</a>, but the party's getting started early in the UK: the DEXT, as it's called across the pond, goes on sale at Orange shops tomorrow and Phones4U stores the day after. Still not soon enough for you? We're also told that the Orange store in Milton Keynes will be having early sales today -- do let us know if you snag one, won't you?<br />

The <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/cliq">Motorola CLIQ</a> hasn't gone on sale yet, but that hasn't stopped a few units from leaking out here and there -- Eldar at mobile-review just posted up one of the most thorough photo previews of the chunky slider we've seen yet. Interestingly, the keyboard continues to draw mixed reviews -- while <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/10/motorola-cliq-first-hands-on-impressions/">we rather liked it</a> when we tried it out, m-r says it's just "okay" and that the five-way rocker "wasn't very handy." We'll have to use this thing a while for ourselves before we make up our minds, but for now, we'd direct you to the read link for a ton more photos.<br />
