Dailymotion is trying to clean up its act with major redesign
Dailymotion announced this week that it has completely redesigned its app and advertising strategy. And the company hopes to attract viewers with higher quality content created through partnerships with media and entertainment brands. Three new partnerships with Universal Music Group, CNN and Vice were also announced.
New Universal Windows apps include Facebook, Instagram
Redmond surprised developers at Build by launching Linux Bash support, but it's now gone back to its bread and butter with updates to its Universal Windows Platform (UWP) apps. As a reminder, those are designed to work across Windows mobile, Xbox and the desktop. Perhaps the most important among the new crop are from Facebook, which has gone Universal for both its main app and Messenger. Advertisers will also be able to reach nearly three million Facebook Universal app users via the Facebook Audience Network. Other social apps, including, Twitter, Instagram and Vine also received new UWP updates.
Sony's next big PS4 update brings Remote Play to PC and Mac
Sony surprised a lot of people when it announced you'd be able to remotely play PlayStation 4 games on a PC or Mac back in November. But we're just as surprised at how quickly it's turned this around: Remote Play will come with the next big PlayStation software update. Unfortunately, although the beta for the new firmware -- version 3.5 -- starts tomorrow, Remote Play will not be part of that pilot.
PS4's next update brings Suspend for games, 60fps Share Play
Confirming the leaked information from last week, Sony announced tonight that it's testing a big update for the PS4. Codenamed "Yukimura", v2.50 it will add the Suspend/Resume feature we've been awaiting since before the system launched. That feature will let gamers put the system in standby, then come right back and resume playing like nothing happened. According to a blog post the feature will be supported by "almost" all PS4 games, although there's no word yet on which ones. We're also getting the ability to upgrade PSN sub-accounts to Master accounts (especially useful for gamers that have gone from kids to adults since the PS3 launched), 60fps Remote Play / Share Play and the ability to find the PSN account of your Facebook friends.
Apple TV gains new YouTube app and additional channels
Apple TV owners are getting a holiday viewing gift today, with the addition of four new channels and a new YouTube app designed to act more like the apps found on other platforms. The new YouTube app provides easier access to subscriptions and searching, and also adds OAuth for login if you'd prefer additional security. Sadly, the new YouTube update means that you'll now get ads along with your favorite cat videos. There's no way to opt out, so get used to those 15- and 30-second blurbs for everything from dinner rolls to car insurance. The new channels on Apple TV include UFC, The Scene, Fusion, and Daily Motion (a French video upload site). UFC will provide premium subscription fighting and martial arts content, either through pay-per-view or a US$99 annual "Fight Pass". Conde Nast is the content provider behind The Scene, which provides video content from Conde Nast magazines and sites like The Verge. Fusion is a joint venture of ABC and Univision, providing video programming for a "young and diverse audience". The new channels and the YouTube update become available today, and you'll be able to tell what's new thanks to a small blue "New" banner that now appears on the app buttons.
Amazon Fire TV scores live video apps for Disney, MLB and WWE
The launch of Flappy Bird Family last week probably wasn't going to make you rush to buy a Fire TV any time soon, but don't worry -- Amazon has a few more aces up its sleeve. The Android-powered media hub is now getting a slew of extra apps, many of which expand the video selection to areas that Amazon simply can't cover. You can now tune into MLB.tv and WWE Network if you need a live sports fix (real or otherwise), and you can entertain your kids with Animal Planet and Watch Disney. If you're the patient type, you'll also be glad to hear that NFL Now, Watch ABC, A&E and Dailymotion are due later this year. These additions likely won't make you chuck your Apple TV or Roku box, but they might get you thinking about a Fire TV if you'd previously ruled it out.
Twitter brings expanded news tweets to the web, makes skimming articles all too easy (update: Lytro too)
While Twitter has had expanded tweets for photos and videos, it's been necessary to click through to full news articles to see any of their content, sometimes even for the headline. A newly-launched update to the desktop and mobile web versions of Twitter is making that at-a-glance reading easier. Major traditional outlets like the New York Times, Der Spiegel or Time now show a brief snippet of an article when the linking tweet is given a click. More Internet-focused sources such as BuzzFeed and TMZ are also in the batch, and videos from the likes of BET and Dailymotion will play in-line. Android and iPhone users will see the same expansion from their native apps in the near future, although we're already weeping quietly for attention spans everywhere. Update: If you're craving shots taken with a Lytro camera, the company has revealed that its interactive, infinite-focus photos are included in the expanded tweet collection.

Everyone loves a winner, and when it comes to the top 12 finalists in the Original iPhone Film Festival (OIFF), the decision about who should get the golden trophy comes down to all of you. This year's 12 finalists in the competition (co-hosted by video site Dailymotion) are facing off across four categories to see who's got the best clip. All of these entries are built from footage captured exclusively on iOS devices, and they're a lovely showcase for what's possible with the iPhone 4S's new camera. The voting for winners continues through next Wednesday, and the final tally will be announced live at Macworld | iWorld on Thursday the 26th of January. Best of luck to the finalists -- now get out there and vote!
Microsoft rolls out more new Xbox 360 apps including UFC and Vudu
The Xbox 360's most recent dashboard update changed everything around again, but its ultimate effect will continue to be felt over the next few weeks and months as more apps trickle out and add more functionality. A few more selections just went live today, and include highly anticipated options like UFC's PPV app, and access to Vudu (pictured after the break -- also, there's no HDX support yet, just HD) movie streaming. That's not all however as they're also joined by 4 on Demand (UK), ABC iView (Australia), Dailymotion, Demand 5 (UK), plus M6 and MSN Video (France). Also recently announced are plans to bring Orange TV in France to the Xbox 360 in the spring with live streaming of thirty TV channels and VOD access later. For its part, Vudu is trying to entice new customers with a $4.99 credit towards their first rental or purchase, plus a few other promotional pricing incentives. Spotify streaming hits the living room on the latest $99 WDTV Live, WDTV Live Hub
The latest iteration of the WD TV Live family is here and this micro sized, 802.11n WiFi-equipped, internal storage-lacking, streamer supports the latest version of its UI -- as seen in the already available WDTV Live Hub. Also new to these two boxes is support for Spotify, bringing up to 320kbps music streaming to the living room, as well as Dailymotion to the existing list (Netflix, Hulu Plus, YouTube, Facebook etc.) The new WDTV Live is available for $99, check after the break for a pic of the box itself and the press release with all the details.
26% of Web video is ready for the iPad
Here's an interesting stat -- 26% of the video on the Web is iPad-ready, according to Mefeedia, a firm that supposedly monitors online video around the Internet. You may think that's low (that means 74% of the web can't be seen on the iPad), but that number actually represents a good amount of growth, as just a scant few months ago, only 10% of Web video was iPad-accessible, or encoded in H.264 or HTML 5, not Flash. Mefeedia also says that most new video is available in HTML 5 -- it's more or less the archives that haven't been converted over yet. The survey itself encompasses over 30,000 different sources, from partnered sites like Hulu, CBS, and ABC, as well as popular video sites like YouTube and DailyMotion. Mefeedia says it expects to "see a new level of engagement" with online video, and that when that surge of interest comes, it'll be supported by HTML 5. Adobe probably won't like hearing that, but then again, they've still got a big majority of the video, so we guess it's up to them to lose it. [via Fortune]
Verizon gives FiOS TV some app store, social media flavor
Confirming the theory that one day soon everything will have an app store of some kind, Verizon has launched its Widget Bazaar for FiOS TV, dedicated to bringing new interactive experiences to FiOS TV subscribers, starting with Facebook, Twitter, and ESPN Fantasy Football. Don't expect to tap out 140 character missives via remote for now, at launch viewers can only view tweets, not post them or log in to their own accounts, although updating Facebook status and personalized ESPN Fantasy Football info is available. Verizon has promised to publish its SDK to enable "open development" (limited to a select group of developers of course) which should bring many free & for-pay apps to join the current (free) offerings by year-end. Also made official is the addition of searching and viewing video from blip.tv, Dailymotion and Veoh, plus the long awaited ability to stream personal videos from a connected PC, available free of charge to Home Media DVR customers. No word yet on what codecs the updated Home Media Manager software will support for transcoding to MPEG-2 and streaming to the set-top box so keep those MKVs holstered for now and check a few screens of the apps in action in our gallery or a quick video walkthrough embedded after the break. FiOS TV expansions: May 16, 2009
This has been an odd week for Verizon FiOS TV news, with 69,000 subs finding out they will be Frontier customers within the next year (for what it's worth, the promise is there will be no changes, at least for a year.) Still, there's at least one bit of expansion to balance things out, with six new HD channels including Comedy.TV, Recipe.TV, ES.TV, MyDestination.TV, Cars.TV and Pets.TV. The future is also bright, with word that streaming internet video is coming to FiOS TV boxes with Dailymotion, Veoh Networks and Blip.TV signed on for the service launching sometime in the second quarter. It will require a PC running Media Manager software PlayOn-style to transcode the clips, but FiOS viewers can browse with their standard remotes, plus Twitter and Facebook access is still on the way. Lots of Hulu content comes to Dailymotion
See this sense of friendship? We admire it. Rather than keeping all of its content to itself, Hulu has decided to shake hands with online video portal Dailymotion in order to give its viewers access to loads of Hulu material. A newly reached distribution agreement will give Dailymotion's audience "access to an additional 40,000 premium videos from Hulu's online video library, including full-length episodes from major television studios, full-length feature films from major film studios, as well as news and other content from more than 130 content providers." The new videos from Hulu will be slotted into Dailymotion's channels (Funny, Film & TV, Music, Sports & Extreme), and by using the company's own Videowall, Videozap or Jukebox, viewers will also be able to program Hulu content into their own channels and playlists. No wonder pay-TV providers are hastily trying to get in while the gettin' is good.
HD quality comparison of online video sharing sites
Sure, you could just surf around the intarwebz and utilize the tried-and-true "eye test" to see which online video sharing site boasts the best HD quality, but there's always a good feeling associated with having some cold, hard facts to back things up. TechVideoBlog has done the hard work for you, spelling out the resolution, codec, audio quality, etc. associated with each. The assembler of the data personally prefers Facebook and YouTube, but we'll let you digest the data in the read link before asking you to share your own choice in comments below.
Dailymotion's HQ online video player: for when HD is out of reach
If you're going to watch online content, it may as well be in high-def, right? But what if you're on a lousy connection, or even a PC built pre-Stalin that just can't handle the load? Enter Dailymotion HQ, a middle ground of sorts that looks distinctly better than the SD player yet doesn't demand all that the HD player does. The app delivers content based on the H.264 codec with audio using AAC at 96kbps; as for resolution, you'll get 512 x 384 at up to 30 frames-per-second. Reportedly, Dailymotion HQ requires any broadband connection, Flash Player 9 and a computer with a dual-core CPU. National Lampoon's original content arrives on Dailymotion in HD
Fans of acquiring their HD content via the internet have one more reason to celebrate today, as National Lampoon Inc. has agreed to place some of its original content on Dailymotion in glorious high-definition. Reportedly, both firms will "share in advertising revenues generated by the additional content," and while it seems that not all programming will be available in HD, at least some of the "premium" stuff will. No word on when the new material will start showing up, but the sooner the better, we say.
Dailymotion releases iPhone site
Those wily mobileers at Engadget Mobile send a pointer to Dailymotion's new iPhone-specific site. No matter how you feel about iPhone-specific websites, watching videos on the iPhone is always fun, and since Dailymotion has taken the time to encode the content in Quicktime, it's actually possible here without a special player (unlike most other vid sites, which use Flash). Of course, if your iPhone is activated normally, you could just be watching YouTube, but for those of you running around without SIMs in your iPhones (ahem, Erica), this is an option for your video watching needs.Unfortunately, even though I wasn't able to browse around the site on an iPhone, I did browse it in my usual Safari browser, and while the content played fine, it looked as though it was sized incorrectly-- only part of the Quicktime video showed up. Some video is better than no video, I guess.
Dailymotion launches iPhone version of its website
Well, this should be welcome news for all the people out there that have Hacktivated their handset, finally, some video content that works -- as Youtube does not. Until we get some proper Flash support, we look to clever, helpful individuals to offer "iPhone" versions of their sites with Quicktime encoded content as a working stop-gap.
