Netflix superhero show 'The Umbrella Academy' debuts February 15th
Netflix has finally taken the wraps off its adaptation of the Dark Horse comic The Umbrella Academy. The streaming service has posted a teaser trailer that both confirms the series' February 15th premiere date and offers a glimpse into its take on Gerard Way's (yes, from My Chemical Romance) and Gabriel Bá's oddball superhero show. As with the comic, the series is based on the strange premise of 43 children being born to women who hadn't been pregnant the day before, seven of which are adopted by a billionaire who trains them to save the world. When their adopted father dies, they set out to solve the mystery -- oh, and they have to prevent an apocalypse while they're at it.
'Sin City' and 'Hellboy' comics come to Hoopla's public library app
After adding DC and Image Comics to its public library digital-checkout service, Hoopla is back with news that Dark Horse Comics' titles are now available for all your Sin City, Hellboy and Lone Wolf and Cub reading enjoyment. The Hoopla app and service syncs with participating local libraries to offer digital versions of books, audio books, albums, movies, TV shows and of course graphic novels. If you have a library card and your local branches support it the service, you can check out digital versions of media right from your phone or browser. When your item is due back at the library, it just disappears from your account. So if you're a fan of comic books, it's probably a good idea to see if your library supports the app.
Dark Horse Comics graphic novels coming to Nook Tablet and Nook Color
Dark Horse Comics has penciled a contract with Barnes & Noble (it'll be sent off to be inked and colored next week*) to get the former's content onto the latter's Tablet and Color e-readers. Available in the Nook Comic store, you'll be able to pick up a mix of the publisher's licensed titles like Mass Effect and Star Wars as well as home-grown fare like Hellboy and Sin City. The range will gently expand month-on-month and is available from today, with titles priced around $10 depending on what you want. * This is a comic book joke.
Dark Horse Digital coming to iOS April 27
The wait is finally almost over, Dark Horse Digital will be releasing their iOS app on April 27! I love reading comics on the iPad, the form-factor and experience is perfect. In fact, I prefer it to paper comics. However, while Marvel, DC Comics and some other publishers have been adding more and more issues from their libraries to a number of applications, such as Comixology, Dark Horse has been notably absent. The Dark Horse app is something I've been following pretty closely for a while now. Originally, it was slated to be released in January, but they weren't finished, so they postponed the launch and promised to make it up to excited fans. That's a promise they're making good on by including the first issue of Hellboy: Seed of Destruction bundled with the app, and they'll be giving away a few other titles if they can get enough people to subscribe to the newsletter before it launches.
Guillermo Del Toro delving deep into game-making -- Hellboy, etc...
The popular Dark Horse Comics demon hero, Hellboy, is receiving the royal video game treatment thanks to the same fellow who brought us the decent-to-great movie (debatable... never saw it, but got mixed reactions from friends), Guillermo Del Toro. What's Del Toro got in store for us? "[It has] several environments where, essentially, you are seeing the past and the present, and they are juxtaposed. You can go from one environment, like the Gobi desert, to a haunted town in medieval Japan. And then you can go and play in the ruins of a castle that is full of Nazi doomsday machines. And then you can go and wander through the empty streets of a haunted Eastern European village. And each of those levels has a common threat enemy, and a great vibe to the gameplay." And then, and then, and then... he definitely gets excited about what he does!Apparently, much of the fighting in the game relies on finding pieces of the environment around you to use as a weapon. Say you break open a door. Why not pick up a large splintered piece of it and bash your opponents? Or crack a stone pillar then pick up some rocks to toss. It sounds like it has a bit of promise, so long as Hellboy himself isn't the only playable character. Come on, you can't possibly expect a game based on a comic book team (kinda sorta) to just use the main character. Otherwise, utilizing environments for weaponry is cool. Especially if it's as detailed as Del Toro excitedly claims.
