'Intuitive' prosthetic hand sees what it's touching

Even as we begin to wire prosthetics directly into our peripheral nervous systems and wield Deus Ex appendages with only the power of our minds, many conventional prosthetic arms are still pretty clunky, their grips activated through myoelectric signals -- electrical activity read from the surface of the stump. The "Intuitive" hand, developed by Dr Kianoush Nazarpour, a senior lecturer in biomedical engineering at Newcastle University, offers a third approach. It uses a camera and computer vision to recognize objects within reach and adjust its grasp accordingly.

Deus Ex Universe is not an MMO, despite the suspiciously grand name, Eidos Montreal says in a blog post. The studio announced Deus Ex Universe last year and some fans equated "Universe" with a potential MMO – but in reality, Deus Ex's Universe is more spiritual than mechanical. "Some of you have had concerns that 'Universe' meant 'MMO.' Rest assured, it does not," Eidos Montreal says. "Deus Ex Universe is the name we are giving to the fictional world and the rich lore we are creating for it, which will of course include core games, as well as any other projects that will help bring the world of Deus Ex to life. We won't go into too much detail for now, but what we envision is for our projects to have meaningful ties to one another, in order for them to strengthen and deepen your experience within this Universe." Eidos Montreal also outlines its new PC and next-gen console engine, the Dawn Engine. The Dawn Engine is based on a "heavily modified version" of IO Interactive's Glacier 2 engine, and Eidos is showcasing it with the in-engine screenshot above. "In the past, we've relied on existing engines for our games," Eidos Montreal writes. "But in the end, we found that our creative vision was somehow limited. So we decided it was time for us to invest in creating an engine tailored for our needs."

GOG.com kicked off its DRM-free Big Fall Sale Finale this morning, putting more than 700 games on sale until Tuesday, November 25. The sale is split into two 48-hour periods, the first a "recap of flash deals" that rapidly come and go, and a second period with the Big Fall Sale's daily bundles that starts on Sunday. Thrifty buyers may want to act fast, as some of the flash deals will expire within hours. The deals include Fez ($5), Rogue Legacy ($3), Deus Ex: Game of the Year Edition ($2.49), Pathologic ($2), System Shock 2 ($5), Rollercoaster Tycoon: Deluxe Edition ($3), FTL: Advanced Edition ($5) and the four primary Wing Commander games are $3 each, with the first two games bundled together. The digital games distributor is also offering a movie bundle for $8.45 that features five films, including The King of Arcades, Pixel Poetry and Minecraft: The Story of Mojang. [Image: GOG.com]

  • Square Enix files 'Deus Ex: Mankind Divided' trademark in Europe

Square Enix has filed a trademark for something called "Deus Ex: Mankind Divided" at the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market - Europe's trademark and design registry. The application, which encompasses "computer game software," "printed matter" and "entertainment services" is currently under review. So, just what is Makind Divided? It's impossible to say, but we have some hints. Eidos Montreal head David Anfossi announced in October of last year that Square Enix and Eidos would be building what he referred to as "Deus Ex: Universe." Deus Ex: Universe was said to expand beyond games into media such as books and mobile games, so it's possible that Mankind Divided will fall into one of those categories. However, not all hope is lost for those holding out for the sequel to Deus Ex: Human Revolution. When discussing Universe, Anfossi shared the concept art you see at the top of this article, and described "trans-humanism segregation" as a major theme of the Deus Ex game which is currently in development for PC, Xbox One and PS4. Humans? Segregated? Might we dare say these humans - aka: mankind - are downright divided? Let the conspiracies begin. [Image: Square Enix]

The year is 2014. It is a time of great costumes and super cool fight scenes. It is the time of a Deus Ex: Human Revolution fan film from Dcode Films, directed by Moe Charif. And regardless of whether you did or didn't ask for this, the end result is pretty stunning. Take a look and see for yourself how far its come since the December 2012 teaser. As for those who haven't yet played Eidos Montreal's entry to the Deus Ex series, don't worry: this isn't a straight-up translation of the game's plot, so even though it features characters from Human Revolution, there are no spoilers here. Once you're done watching Adam "These Sunglasses Augmentations Were Totally Necessary" Jensen, you can also punch your way through the film's fourth wall and check out a behind-the-scenes peek at some of the sets, stunts and CG used in the film. Gaming-themed apparel can be great when done well, but a healthy love for the involved series certainly helps, too. If you're a fan of Thief or feel inspired by Adam Jensen's fashion sense, Eidos Montreal launched an online shop this week full of t-shirts and other apparel. The selection of shirts is joined by a Crippled Burrick cap and pilsner glass, recalling the pub from the original Thief. Initiation hoodies and iPhone cases are available if you're keen on joining The Watch. There's also a Deus Ex-themed coat, lined with the golden triangle design prevalent in Deus Ex: Human Revolution's menus. If you need something to decorate the walls, pre-sales have also begun for two lithographs that recall the Thief and Deus Ex universes. The earliest estimated shipping date for either one is February 26, but since they're from a batch of 250 limited-edition prints, you'll want to place an order sooner rather than later if you're interested. • 5 Classic PC games begging for the iPad treatment

    by

    03.07.2014

Yesterday, the fantastic iOS port of Knights of the Old Republic received full MFi controller support and cloud save functionality that lets you transfer progress from one device to another (like when you upgrade your iPad, for example). Combine those features with the revamped HD visuals and a few other tweaks the game has received since its iOS debut, and the iPad is now the premiere platform on which to experience one of the greatest western RPGs ever. The iPad, in all of its current incarnations, is a powerful tool for productivity, but what's becoming more and more apparent is that it's the perfect platform for yesterday's PC games to receive a second life. It's a big risk for a developer to put the resources into reviving a classic game, but there are a few sure bets out there that would undoubtedly thrive on the App Store. Grim Fandango It's a little bit absurd that this classic hasn't already been reborn on the iPad, especially given the soft spot many adult gamers have for this Tim Schafer epic. 3D models on top of static backgrounds might prove a little tricky to bump up into a Retina-friendly resolution, but the game was already pretty sharp looking and I don't think anyone would complain about a straight port. Give it to us now! Syndicate/Syndicate Wars Syndicate -- and its sequel, Syndicate Wars -- are still pointed to as inspiration for modern cyberpunk-themed games, and the isometric perspective of the original PC titles would be a perfect fit for the iPad. Controlling a team of mechanically enhanced assassins as you swipe and pan around a cityscape would be made much easier with the help of the iPad's touchscreen, and the modest weapon effects and other visual touches would be no problem for even the still-in-production iPad 2. Theme Hospital Theme Hospital has all the makings of a great iOS game: It's relatively easy to learn, deep enough that it can keep you busy for hours, and it's absolutely absurd. At its heart, it's a sim-style management game, but the hilarious patients and fast and frantic pace of the entire experience would be great on a tablet. Deus Ex Yes, a new Deus Ex spinoff recently launched on the App Store, and that game's solid controls and console-quality action just proves how easy it would be to port the original title to Apple's tablet. Everything from the hacking to inventory management would be made easier and more fun with the use of a touchscreen, and as KOTOR shows us, upping the resolution of these basic 3D models looks just fine on a Retina display. Black & White One of the most beloved "god games" of all time, Black & White on the iPad would finally let you touch your creations the way the game had always intended. In the PC version of the game your on-screen hand was responsible for manipulating various aspects of the game world, so a tablet version would translate wonderfully. You could cast lighting down onto your subjects from the heavens with a flick or discipline your "pet" with a tap on its head. Please make this happen.

  • Rumor: Deus Ex dev cancels unannounced, original IP

While Eidos Montreal continues work on both the Deus Ex franchise and on the upcoming Thief, a third, unrevealed project has been scrapped. Kotaku cites unnamed sources for this revelation, but notes that "two different developer sources" had linked the now-canceled game to the Japanese side of publisher Square Enix. Furthering that tenuous connection, the site points to a recent OXM interview with Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII gameplay director Yuji Abe, in which Abe suggests that Square Enix might one day allow Eidos to develop a Final Fantasy entry. "Obviously, Square Enix bought out Eidos a number of years ago, and now we have direct access to American development teams," stated Abe. "That's certainly been discussed within the company, the possibility of say, Eidos or maybe someone else to look after or maybe take on the Final Fantasy series." Was this canceled game a new Final Fantasy entry? Did it even exist? We attempted to contact Square Enix for more details, but never received a response.

  • Deus Ex: Universe announced, includes new PC and next-gen console games

Eidos is looking to greatly expand the Deus Ex universe with a new project called ... Deus Ex: Universe. The project will include new next-gen console and PC games, but Eidos' goal is grander than that. Writing on the company's community site, Eidos Montreal head David Anfossi says, "The concept behind Deus Ex: Universe is to create an ongoing, expanding and connected game world built across a generation of core games." The plan is to add to the Deus Ex franchise on a "regular basis," and to "deliver a deep conspiracy" that will stretch across multiple games. Beyond the PC and console games, Deus Ex: Universe will also span across other media, including mobile games, books and graphic novels, says Anfossi. He adds that Eidos Montreal is "already into production of the starting point for Deus Ex: Universe with a new game for PC and next-generation consoles," and that "most" of the original Deus Ex: Human Revolution team is on board. Anfossi also shared the above concept art, a sneak peek of things to come. It's an example of a "trans-humanism segregation," which will be a core theme of the next game. "The people in this segregated class have reshaped their environment," says Anfossi, "nostalgic for their ideal of Cyber Renaissance."

  • Deus Ex: The Fall update supports iPad 2

Deus Ex: The Fall hit the App Store a few weeks back and instantly made headlines for an anti-piracy scheme whereby users with jailbroken iOS devices were precluded from playing the game, even if they spent the full US$6.99 to download it. The developers were quick to respond to user outcry and promised that an impending update would soon change that. Yesterday, Deus Ex: The Fall was in fact updated, but the bigger story here is that the game is now compatible with the iPad 2. So for all you iPad 2-toting folks who want to get some action-style gaming on, have at it. The changelog also indicates that the recent version of the game includes a major update to the game's artificial intelligence. Lastly, bear in mind that the game is not compatible with the iPhone 4, but will work on the iPhone 4S and above, the iPad 2 and above, and the iPad mini.

  • Daily iPad App: Deus Ex: The Fall offers both flash and function

You won't find many iOS games worthy of being compared to their console counterparts, but Deus Ex: The Fall isn't like most iOS games. When it comes to story-driven games on the iPad, there might not be a game with higher production values. However, this isn't necessarily a sign that a game is great or even fun, so does The Fall fulfill its own potential? Kinda. The Fall is an action RPG at heart, and in its transition to the mobile platform, the Deus Ex flavor remained largely intact. Like the rest of the franchise, The Fall takes place in the future. In this case, the year is 2027, and you are a ruthless mercenary named Ben Saxon. You won't be relying on any James Bond-esque gadgets to complete your deadly deeds. Instead you are fitted with various robotic enhancements that provide you with superhuman abilities. You are also provided with the option to purchase an array of weapons, letting you choose whether the dozens of enemies you'll encounter on each mission will meet their end at your hands or simply suffer a bad headache. Each weapon is also upgradeable with various attachments and other perks, and the same goes for your character. There is an extensive tree of customization, and you're going to be busy for a very long time if you're determined to try everything. The world of Deus Ex looks quite fantastic on the iPad's retina display, and the majority of the environments look appropriately gritty and lived-in. But this eye candy comes at a cost, as I noticed several instances where the game would fall from its normally smooth frame rate and begin to chug for a few seconds at a time. This is to be expected with a game of this size on a mobile device, but it was still disappointing. Controlling a character in a 3D environment using a touchscreen is rarely a fun experience, but The Fall manages to replicate the feel of a proper controller (or keyboard, if that's your thing) rather admirably. You are given the option to either tap on locations in order to navigate to them or use one thumb to move forward and backward and the other thumb to turn. The latter feels the most natural, and while your character may make a few unfortunate wall bumps here and there, it's comfortable enough to avoid frustration. Unfortunately, not everything about The Fall is so well done. The artificial intelligence of your enemy combatants is one of the most glaring reminders that you are playing a mobile game, as they are often as dumb as rocks. Nobody in this virtual game world moves or acts with anything resembling rational thought, and when you see an enemy running into a wall or hiding in plain sight, you're going to be shaking your head. Deus Ex: The Fall isn't perfect, but it gets more things right than wrong, and for a game as big as this, that's quite an accomplishment. If you have an iPad and you're looking for a futuristic adventure that sometimes forgets it's a mobile game, you can't go wrong.

  • Deus Ex: The Fall jams your gun on jailbroken iOS devices

Those playing Deus Ex: The Fall, which launched for iOS for $6.99, on jailbroken iDevices have found none of their guns work – not even the tranquilizer gun. The limitation was first outed on Reddit, with many reviews in the App store describing the game's surprise "feature." The prompt above occurs right after the movement tutorial in the game, at the outset of the shooting tutorial. We've reached out to Square Enix for comment. Jailbreaking refers to the act of unlocking functionality within iOS devices not originally intended for the end user. While not illegal, it does void the warranty of the device in question.
