We use the selfie camera on our smartphones up to 40 percent of the time, yet most testing puts the emphasis on the rear camera. To address that issue, DxOMark has introduced scoring for front-facing smartphone cameras based on criteria like skin tone and color accuracy, sharpness, contrast, exposure and more. A number of cameras have already been tested, and the models on top, by a wide margin, are Samsung's Galaxy Note 9 and the Google Pixel 3, both with overall scores of 92. Rounding out the top five were Xiaomi's Mi Mix 3, the Apple iPhone XS Max and Samsung Galaxy S9 Plus, with scores of 84, 82 and 81 respectively.

DxO One is a compact snap-on camera that drastically improves the quality of your smartphone photos, but only iPhone users have been able to benefit so far. It recently arrived on Android, however, and is now up for pre-order as a fairly attractive "Early Access Pack." For $499, you get the camera, a protective shell and DxO's PhotoLab software, effectively saving about $260. The caveats are that there's still no shipping date, and the device only works on newer models that have built-in USB Type-C ports.

DxO, the company best known for its lens and camera scores, is also behind one of the nicer smartphone-attached cameras out there, the $499 DxO One. Up until now, it has only supported the iPhone and iPad, but the company has revealed that it will soon release the DxO One Android via an early access program. It didn't give many details, other than saying it will attach to type-C USB connectors, so it'll likely only work with newer Android devices.

After a steady stream of teasers, OnePlus is finally ready to put its money where its mouth is: the smartphone maker is holding a launch event for the OnePlus 5 on June 20th at 12PM Eastern. It's not saying more about the phone alongside the news, but the "focus on what matters" tagline is a not-so-subtle allusion to the 5's DxO-backed camera. As it is, both official tidbits and leaks already give an idea as to what to expect -- this should be another flagship-class device that (hopefully) undercuts rivals on price.

Apple's keen to remind the world how great the camera on the iPhone 6 is with its new "Shot on iPhone 6" billboards. But, some mobile photographers want more. That's where the new DxO One comes in. It's tiny camera that attaches to the iPhone's Lightning port. It shoots RAW images with a 20.2 MP one-inch CMOS BSI sensor behind an f/1.8 32mm equivalent lens. The One can shoot independent of the iPhone, but when attached with the companion app launched, it turns the iPhone into a large viewfinder with the same manual controls found on a DSLR. The camera is available for pre-order now in the US for $599 and will ship in September.

  • Canon EOS 60D turns up in DxO's optics modules roadmap

We've heard some Canon EOS 60D rumors before, but this one might just be the most convincing yet -- the as-yet-unannounced camera recently turned up in a roadmap that wasn't leaked but actually posted on the site of optics module manufacturer DxO. As you might have guessed, all mentions of the camera have now been removed from the site, but what was there before seemed to indicate that the 60D would be turning up in November or December (or, at least, DxO's modules supporting it would be). Of course, there's no details on the camera itself, but if that launch date is accurate it would line up nicely for an announcement at Photokina in September.
