Now optimized to the iPad in addition to the iPhone and iPod touch, the software allows you to sort your listening habits by sports, teams and athletes that you follow. The free version offers access to podcasts, the 20-minute SportCenter cycle, and offline listening for on-demand content. Currently, the premium version of the app is free as well -- touting custom stations / playlists, live audio pause / rewind, myESPN personalization, alerts / push notifications and a few more gems to keep you well informed on the latest Red Sox debacle. After a "limited time," though, you'll have to shell out $4.99 for the premium app and its 35 ESPN radio stations. What about Android and WP7 devices, you ask? The folks in Bristol claim that apps for those platforms will arrive later this summer.

Continue reading ESPN Radio app gets a refresh, now properly outfitted for the iPad

ESPN Radio app gets a refresh, now properly outfitted for the iPad originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 16 May 2012 03:21:00 EST. Part of a deal reached back in January, ESPN has managed to tie its live streaming service in with Comcast's Xfinity TV protocols, similar to the adjustments made by HBO to open up HBO Go streaming on the Xbox 360. One downside however is that for the moment Comcast customer access is restricted to the website (XfinityTV.com access is coming soon) and iPad / iPhone apps (an update is required first). The Android app that launched a year ago is, for the moment, not supported, although access there is promised "in the coming months." As we heard in January this just the beginning, as similar Watch services will be rolling out for Disney Channel, DisneyXD and Disney Junior as part of the mouse company's TV+ program. For now those live feeds of ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.com (Buzzer Beater and Goal Line are available in their respective seasons) will have to do however, as the channels and cable services try to add more features and access to keep subscribers happy, or at least still paying, whether they're at home or away.

Continue reading WatchESPN finally streams to Comcast customers, but not on Android

WatchESPN finally streams to Comcast customers, but not on Android originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 May 2012 23:23:00 EST. Sports fans can look forward to PGA Tour, a dedicated app to cover the golfing action, while the ESPN sports hub will get a series of updates, plus an exclusive Lumia-only Fantasy Football app in autumn. Gamers will get new treats from EA -- including FIFA, NBA Jam and more -- and Rovio, which is creating a dedicated development team to create titles for Nokia Windows phones. The event drew quite a crowd and the 3D quality didn't disappoint. The crew was using a Sony HDC-P1 camera system with 3D rigs by the Pace Cameron Group all sent through a Sony MVX-8000x production switcher. If you didn't catch it live on ESPN 3D, we're sure there will be plenty of opportunities to catch the 3D reruns.

Gallery: Behind the scenes with live ESPN 3D boxing at CES 2012

Edgar Alvarez contributed to this report
Behind the scenes with live ESPN 3D boxing at CES 2012 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 12 Jan 2012 20:42:00 EST. We got our first glimpse of Verizon's latest LTE family member, the LG Spectrum, yesterday at the manufacturer's event. At the time, however, we weren't given an opportunity to get our own smudge marks on the glossy black device. That's all changed now, as we've spent time on the showroom floor getting know this Android handset -- a veritable twinner of the LG Nitro HD. So click on past the break as we parse through our first impressions.
It seems like it's been forever since we last saw college football in 3D at CES and oh my has the technology come a long way. ESPN partnered up with RealD, Marchon, and Christie Digital to present the LSU vs Alabama BCS National Championship game in 3D at the Las Vegas Hotel theater. We left wow'd and believe everyone else did too. We walked about the theater and didn't find a bad spot, although front and center was the best. There were a number of 3D cameras in use to cover the event (details after the break) which featured the same announcers as the 2D presentation, but different cameras from different angles. Of those cameras, the most dramatic was the wireless handhelds that made us feel like we were doing the pre-game interviews ourselves. The only gripe was that the typical 50-yard camera up high and center was not part of the presentation, we found ourselves missing the typical perpendicular shots that are a staple of most football broadcasts. This did reaffirm one thing, though, we can't imagine there's a single sports fan in the world who has experienced their favorite in 3D and not become a fan of the technology.
Sports, sports, sports, sports. Hey, it's LG spectrum, a good phone at sports! LG showed off its 4.5-inch handset today, during its CES kickoff press event -- and when we say "showed off," we mean exactly that, the company had two models on-hand, and it wasn't letting us poor members of the press actually get our paws on the thing.

From our vantage point, however, it really does look to be a solid piece of hardware. It's fairly skinny, in spite of that large display. The body of the thing is pretty straight-forward -- it's a large slab, with rounded corners and a border around the edge that forms a bit of a lip at the point of contact. The top bit of the bezel rocks the Verizon logo and a small, front-facing 1.3 megapixel camera. Below the display are three buttons, the menu and back white touch buttons and a silver home button that adds a bit of flourish to an otherwise drab bezel.

That 4.5-inch IPS HD LCD is clearly the centerpiece of the thing, and given the company's ESPN partnership, it was keen on using it to show off sports. And we have to say, the tiny basketball players looks pretty crisp -- high-def may be the key to watching video on such a relatively small screen. Well, HD and squinting.

Flip it over and you'll see a subtle checkered pattern on the glossy rear. At top, a good deal of real estate is devoted to the 8MP camera, including a large, silver border. A white LG logo is smack dab in the center, and a not-so-subtle reminder of the phone's 4G LTE capabilities graces the bottom, along with two small speaker grills.

All in all, this is shaping up to be an extremely solid phone -- sports-lover or no. It'll hit on January 19th for $200.

Gallery: LG Spectrum eyes-on

LG Spectrum eyes-on originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 13:17:00 EST. We're here at the LG press conference at CES and ESPN's Michael Bayle's just dropped the HD bomb. The LG Spectrum will come with the broadcaster's ScoreCenter app and will broadcast exclusive 720p HD content, whilst all other phones will pump out those field goals in SD only. The Spectrum launches on January 19th on Verizon, for all your Stewart Scott needs.

Continue reading LG Spectrum gets ESPN ScoreCenter App, Exclusive 720p video

LG Spectrum gets ESPN ScoreCenter App, Exclusive 720p video originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 09 Jan 2012 11:55:00 EST. A renewal of the carriage agreement between Disney and Comcast has extended the cable company's "TV Everywhere" model, allowing it to offer customers access to "70 services" including all the ABC, Disney and ESPN channels you can name on their TVs, computers and mobile devices. Comcast's blog post notes this access extends both in and outside of the home, a major sticking point for most of the live TV streaming apps offered by cable and satellite companies (with the obvious exception of Dish Network and its Sling integration) so far. Other news mentioned in the press release (included after the break) is that the ABC video on-demand access on Comcast's cable boxes is fast-forward disabled -- no ad skipping. Other than the existing WatchESPN which Comcast customers will now have access to, there are also WatchDisneyChannel, WatchDisneyXD and WatchDisneyJunior services on the way, a part of disney's own multiscreen initiative called TV+. One other note is that for the first time the deal covers retransmission fees for ABC-owned local stations, which used to be free. There's no word on exactly how much money is changing hands as a result, but we'll probably be able to look at our cable bills in the future and see the effect -- hopefully being able to pull in the latest Grey's Anatomy episodes on the go is worth it.
Continue reading Comcast, Disney TV deal opens up access on multiple screens, tightens VOD strings

Comcast, Disney TV deal opens up access on multiple screens, tightens VOD strings originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 04 Jan 2012 14:50:00 EST. We dug into ESPN's use of the Xbox 360 and EA Sports games to power its Virtual Playbook segments last year, but in preparation for this round of BCS bowl games it's upgraded the system with a bit of augmented reality. The new GameView system uses a tabletop 70-inch touchscreen LCD, a copy of NCAA Football '12 and four dedicated workstations to blend everything together and create a simulation for viewers to see the analysts move virtual players around the field. It should at least be more interesting than CNN's previous election coverage implementation, although we're mostly wondering when a combo of Kinect, Surface and old school electronic football will bring the experience directly to our living rooms to play around with. Check out the gallery for a few more screens and expect to see this implemented more during the upcoming big time bowl games -- no, there's no secret code Desmond Howard can input to get a national championship game between two college football teams that haven't already played each other, we asked.
Need something to do while your loved ones slave over hot stoves and turkey platters? Microsoft and Bing have got your back, offering gamers another free Xbox Live Gold weekend to help you frag your way through the holiday. Of course, if you're feeling too sedentary to twitch your thumbs, you can always veg out with your Netflix queue or use the console's ESPN app to get your traditional Thanksgiving sports fix. Either way, you're golden until the 27th -- after that, you'll need to pony up and subscribe. Don't have an Xbox 360, you say? We hear there are some deals floating around that might help you fix that.
Bing brings the holiday gold, offers free Xbox Live preview for Thanksgiving weekend originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Nov 2011 20:32:00 EST. Not sufficiently amped up for the impending release of Amazon's first tablet? That could very well change as the Seattle-based company's just made its thousands-strong app pot a little sweeter. After reminding the product-buying populace a few days ago that the newly birthed Kindle Fire is, indeed, a tablet with access to a boatload of Android apps, Bezos and co. are now upping the slate's ante by announcing the availability of Hulu Plus and ESPN ScoreCenter. It's an obvious swat at the Nook Tablet's two greatest lures and could sway indecisive customers back from the brink of Barnes & Noble's beguiling clutches.
Continue reading Amazon adds Hulu Plus, ESPN ScoreCenter to Kindle's Android apps, Nook Tablet loses its edge

Amazon adds Hulu Plus, ESPN ScoreCenter to Kindle's Android apps, Nook Tablet loses its edge originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 11 Nov 2011 19:04:00 EST. Fancy some turn-by-turn voice-guided navigation, cloud based music or sports highlights on your brand new Nokia smartphone? You don't need an app for that: the Lumia 800 is now the only Windows Phone with full navigation built-in. Nokia announced its Drive navigation, which has a look and feel that should be comfortable with users of its former Ovi Maps suite. It also looks to have similar functionality, enabling the download of maps so that you can find your way into offline areas (see gallery, below).
There's also exclusive Music and ESPN Sports Hub apps. The former features Mix Radio, a service that streams "locally relevant music" across hundreds of channels. The latter, meanwhile, allows sports fans to check up on stats, scores and news, and to pin their favorite teams or leagues to the start screen. All told, the company is promising a "uniquely Nokia" experience -- guess their slick hardware won't be the only way they break out of the WP7 pack. Check out a video demo of the navigation embedded after the break.
Just hours before the 2011 NFL season kicks off, the ESPN and the NFL announced a new eight year extension for Monday Night Football that runs from 2014 to 2021 and most notably to us, includes a provision for 3D broadcast rights. The new deal covers items from new studio programming (beginning this season) to availability of games on the WatchESPN mobile app to the Pro Bowl we still won't watch. According to the LA Times, the pricetag for ESPN -- before it's passed on to the cable / satellite company and eventually ends up on your bill in a rate increase -- is around $1.9 billion per season, up from $1.1 billion previously. While this should help quell ideas that ESPN 3D might be axed after its removal from U-verse, the bad news is it could still be a ways off, as we're told 3D broadcasts are expected when the extension takes effect in 2014. Sadly, 3D early adopters are probably used to waiting, with unbundled retail availability of Avatar still pending for 2012, this is just one more item to add to your calendar.
Continue reading ESPN's new Monday Night Football deal includes 3D broadcasts, WatchESPN app

ESPN's new Monday Night Football deal includes 3D broadcasts, WatchESPN app originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 08 Sep 2011 11:05:00 EST. The PlayStation 3 may have NFL Sunday Ticket but the Xbox 360 still has exclusive access to ESPN3's slate of games, shows and replays, and today the app was updated with a new look and a few new features. Viewers can designate their favorite sports and teams to bring related content right to the front, while a new mini-guide gives easy access to other streams while you watch. If you're trying to keep track of more than one game there's also support for split screen viewing (with independent control of each stream) and upgraded voice control for Kinect owners. Other tweaks include a college football scoreboard to keep track of all the games at once, reminders, live alerts on score changes and the addition of ESPN's BottomLine. Unchanged is the restriction that you need to subscribe to a TV provider that includes ESPN3 in its package, but if you do have the service (and shell out for XBL, of course) it should be available the next time you load up your console. Check out the YouTube videos embedded above and after the break along with a press release for a runthrough of some of the new features.
Continue reading Xbox 360's ESPN3 app updated with more voice control, split screen and more

Xbox 360's ESPN3 app updated with more voice control, split screen and more originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 25 Aug 2011 23:12:00 EST. So far, college football is the jewel in ESPN 3D's broadcast schedule, and the network just released its broadcast plans for the 2011 season. The schedule for the 2011 season has increased to 20 regular season games and five bowl games, plus the BCS National Championship on January 9th. Things kick off with UNLV/Wisconsin on September 1st and Miami/Maryland September 5th, while some dates are still TBD. Hit the source link to see the full schedule, which will probably please ACC and Pac-10 fans, although we're not seeing many dates scheduled in the flyover states so most Big Ten (12?) fans should probably hold onto their tickets. Check out our review of last season's coverage, we'll keep some specs handy to see how things have changed in a year.
ESPN 3D doubles its college football coverage in year two originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 08 Aug 2011 12:41:00 EST. While we were very pleased to hear that our friend Chuck Pagano just got a new title at ESPN -- Executive Vice President & CTO -- we're even happier about his remarks at the opening of a new building at the sports broadcaster's Bristol campus. This week it broke ground on DC 2, a four-story 193,000 square foot building that should be ready to go in 2014 with studios, control rooms with plans to take over as the new home of SportsCenter. There's no word on exactly what tech ESPN is putting in, but with ESPN 3D already up and running and the 1080p-ready LA studios plus MPEG-4 broadcast equipment ready to go, it wasn't a shock to hear Chuck asked people to "get used to hearing the term 4K TV." If you're not familiar with the name, check after the break for an Engadget Show segment we filmed with him in Bristol last year as well as a press release that rattles off his (long) list of accomplishments.
Continue reading ESPN EVP and CTO Chuck Pagano opens a new facility, sees 4K sports on the horizon

ESPN EVP and CTO Chuck Pagano opens a new facility, sees 4K sports on the horizon originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 05 Aug 2011 16:11:00 EST. Support by AT&T U-verse for the fledgling ESPN 3D channel always seemed halfhearted, while it was one of the providers to carry the channel at launch it was the only one at that time to levy a $10 fee for the privilege of viewing. The good news for subscribers is that $10 fee is gone, but the bad news is the channel has exited stage left along with it yesterday, before the last night of ESPN's big X-Games broadcast in 3D with no apparent warning. AT&T's reason for the move follows after the break, which lays out the case that even despite interested viewers chipping in their Hamiltons it has decided with there's not enough demand to support the "high cost" of ESPN 3D. Slow down on ringing the death knell for 3D everywhere however, since AT&T is still hanging onto its 3D VOD movies, for now. Its willingness to make the rare move of dropping one of the sports leaders offerings definitely speaks to the niche status of 3D, but experience suggests this comes down to a dollars and cents decision across the entire swath of the ever growing ESPN / ABC / Disney family.
We had already learned a bit about ESPN 3D's summer schedule including X Games 17, but now that the NBA Finals are over, it's announced even more events as it moves into its second year of existence. VP Bryan Burns says we can expect 20 college football games to be aired in 3D this fall, up from 11 last year, including the BCS National Championship just like last season. also on the schedule is the MLB Home Run Derby (again) on July 11, some World Football Challenge soccer matches and a slew of Little League World Series games in August. As much as we enjoy watching the Danny Almontes and Terrelle Pryors of the world, we're all about the amateur sports, but it's been a year -- queue up some pro football and regular season baseball ESPN.
Continue reading ESPN 3D gears up for year two with more college football, Home Run Derby and Little League

ESPN 3D gears up for year two with more college football, Home Run Derby and Little League originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 14 Jun 2011 16:31:00 EST. A side effect of ESPN's transition to MPEG-4 exclusivity is that the new Motorola equipment it's relying on (and passing out to affiliates) supports distribution of 3D signals and 1080p60 broadcasts. Executive VP of Technology for ESPN and friend to Engadget Chuck Pagano says this allows the network to future proof, extending on work already done when it built its latest studio in Los Angeles for 1080p60 from the ground up two years ago. Of course, we're still waiting for someone to go all BBC and flip the switch that brings those extra pixels home, but for now we just have to wait for each piece of the chain to be ready for that to happen.
Continue reading ESPN's MPEG-4 switch provides a path to 1080p60 broadcasts

ESPN's MPEG-4 switch provides a path to 1080p60 broadcasts originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 15:54:00 EST. More than three years after testing out 3D production during a Rugby Six Nations match the BBC is ready to send out its first 3D broadcast during the men's and women's singles finals at Wimbledon. UK viewers can catch 3D tennis via the BBC HD feed on Freeview, Freesat, Virgin or Sky, July 2nd and 3rd. Here in the US ESPN 3D has already announced plans to air those matches, plus the men's semifinal, both live and reaired at more convenient local times. While Panasonic featured its 3D tech last week during the French Open at Roland Garros, Sony is going to be working the dials at Wimbledon along with the BBC as the network undertakes "a 3D TV editorial experiment." 3D Focus TV has more details like the channel listings and a behind the scenes look at a 3D promo shot to advertise movie theater screenings that will also be available during the event. So far Sky has been way out in front of the 3D push in the UK while the BBC is taking a more cautious approach, but since Wimbledon was one of the first sporting events aired in color on the BBC, it's no surprise this pops up as a test event in the run up to new broadcast technologies emerging during the London Olympics next year.
Continue reading BBC picks Wimbledon for its first 3D broadcast in July

BBC picks Wimbledon for its first 3D broadcast in July originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 08 Jun 2011 08:16:00 EST. We've got some bad news if you're not a fan of how NBC covers the Olympics because the IOC just announced NBC Universal has won the rights to broadcast the Games through 2020 with a $4.38 billion bid, winning over rivals ABC/ESPN and Fox. ESPN and Disney had been very upfront about their desire to broadcast the games and mentioned more than once they would provide all the events live the way we prefer to see them. The good news is that according to NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus, every event will be aired live on TV or over the internet -- starting in 2014. While Comcast and NBC try to turn things around from the 2010 Games that it lost money broadcasting, we'll probably have to suffer through tape delay one more time for the London Games next summer.
Continue reading NBC Universal wins Olympic broadcasts through 2020, promises all events live starting in 2014

NBC Universal wins Olympic broadcasts through 2020, promises all events live starting in 2014 originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 07 Jun 2011 16:25:00 EST. The NBA Finals kicks off tomorrow, and while the games will air in high definition on ABC, they will also air for the first time in 3D on ESPN 3D. If you prefer your sporting events sans-glasses there's plenty to look forward to: 32 HD cameras, six Super Slo-Mo cameras, a SkyCam and additional tweaks like ESPN Axis graphics. We'd still prefer to swap Mike Breen for Marv Albert and whatever intro music they have planned for John Tesh's Roundball Rock, but that's just us. The 3D broadcast will be held down by Mark Jones and either Bruce Bowen or Tim Legler calling the action. Of course, the fantastic playoffs we've experienced will come to an end eventually, but to fill in the summer sports slate until the X Games, ESPN 3D has also plans to air five Friday Night Fights matches over the summer. Check the press releases after the break for the dates and details, we'll be hunting down our 3D specs.
Continue reading ESPN 3D preps for NBA Finals, adds new Friday Night Fights to the schedule

ESPN 3D preps for NBA Finals, adds new Friday Night Fights to the schedule originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 30 May 2011 17:26:00 EST. The free WatchESPN app that lets users tune into the family sports channels (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN3.com) has been upgraded to version 1.1 on iOS (also available for Android) and in the process added a new UI designed just for the iPad. It sports a new tablet friendly UI, but the key restriction is still that you need to subscribe to Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks or Verizon FiOS TV to make use of the service. If you don't have one of those and need a quick hit of sports TV without your TV, there is an account preview option that gives a few hours of viewing, no authentication necessary. You can download it yourself at the iTunes link below or check out the commercial embedded after the break.
Continue reading WatchESPN app upgraded for iPad, still restricted to just a few TV providers

WatchESPN app upgraded for iPad, still restricted to just a few TV providers originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 27 May 2011 14:03:00 EST. If you enjoyed the ESPN 30 for 30 series of documentaries, you can finally get all of them on Blu-ray in one six-disc set at Best Buy starting tomorrow. The set has all 30 films plus five hours of extras. The MSRP is right at $100, but since we couldn't dig up the set on Best Buy's site yet, we don't know if it will be on sale for a lower price. Either way, keep your eyes peeled tomorrow if you're looking for a gift for yourself or for your dad. We'd offer up our favorites from the documentaries but it's an impossible choice between selections like Once Brothers, The Two Escobars or The Pony Excess -- based on the content alone this series is a must-have. The press release with all the details and original trailer with clips from several of the segments is after the break.
Continue reading ESPN 30 for 30 Complete Series Blu-ray set comes to Best Buy tomorrow

ESPN 30 for 30 Complete Series Blu-ray set comes to Best Buy tomorrow originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 26 May 2011 17:11:00 EST. Like HBO, ESPN already transmits all of its channels in MPEG-4 via satellite and will save money by cutting out the older backups, but since most cable companies are still sending streams to customers in MPEG-2 (although some are following DirecTV's lead) they'll need to transcode the signal an extra time which could affect the picture quality. Multichannel News mentions ESPN is supplying the necessary Motorola decoders to affiliates that need them, at this point all we can do is wait until July and see if there's any notable difference in sports quality on our end of the pipe.
The WatchESPN app is now available for Android devices, bringing the same live video streams of ESPN channels it featured at its debut on iOS last month. The interface appears to be equivalent, however running it will require the installation of Adobe AIR on your Android 2.2 or higher device (no tablet optimizations yet and there's no Honeycomb mention in the press release after the break, but it's probably on the list after the iPad-optimized version drops later this month). The downsides are still the same however, only TV subscribers to ESPNNetworks enabled providers (Time Warner Cable, Bright House or Verizon FiOS TV) can stream everything (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 and ESPNU) while those with just FiOS internet can access ESPN3, and all others are locked out entirely. If you have the right service plan, click the market link below to download the app (there's another app in the market called Watch ESPN Free, but we'd probably avoid that for now) for free.
Continue reading WatchESPN app is now on Android, go-anywhere live TV streams still restricted to just a few providers

WatchESPN app is now on Android, go-anywhere live TV streams still restricted to just a few providers originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 09 May 2011 16:05:00 EST.
A tipster sent us video from ESPN's NFL draft coverage, asking us to identify the giant phone in University of Georgia wide receiver AJ Green's hand. Turns out it's a white Dell Streak, perhaps the only phone on the market capable of dwarfing the Cincinnati Bengals' fourth overall pick by comparison. Keep in mind, Green is a big guy -- he's 6 feet, 4 inches. He also catches footballs for a living, so we figure that, at the very least, he's got to have average hands for a man of his size. We're happy to report he didn't spike the phone after hearing the news. Videographic evidence after the break.

With the second consecutive year of the Masters Tournament being broadcast in 3D, if you're wondering why golf and 3D are such a good match look no further than ESPN 3D coordinating producer Phil Orlin's post on the new Front Row blog. He points out the varying terrain of the golf course and the ability to accurately read greens as reasons why 3D works so well at Augusta, and that watching it that way is the closest thing to seeing it in person. You can see for yourself when 3D coverage of the tournament kicks off today at 5 p.m., and while we're sure more people will be watching than did last year the question is still how many?
ESPN 3D exec explains why golf is such a good fit for the network originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 07 Apr 2011 16:12:00 EST. Continuing the trend of tying streaming content to the ol' ball and chain that is your pricy cable subscription, ESPN announced the launch of the WatchESPN App for the iPhone and the iPod Touch, with an iPad optimized version slated for release in May. Said App can be downloaded now and will allow you to "stay connected to live sports and shows from ESPN, wherever and whenever you want them" -- assuming you're a Time Warner Cable, Bright House Networks or Verizon FiOS TV customer that is. The ability to watch three of the most popular cable networks while on the go, or anywhere in your house, is certainly nothing to scoff at, but many sports fans' excitement will indeed be diminished until ESPN fulfills its promise to release apps for "other smartphones and tablets," and of course the other big service providers like Comcast, DirecTV and Dish Network get with the program. For now you can live vicariously through us by clicking through to the gallery or watching the western style WatchESPN App commercial available embedded after the break.
Like most sports lovers with HDTVs, we watch a lot of ESPN, and on a few occasions have gotten to check out the inner workings of how it brings all that sports news to life, but today the network turns the camera inward by launching ESPN Front Row. This site aims to give a look at the day to day operations of the network and all the people behind the scenes. The launch event is a 24 hour series of photos that started at midnight this morning. Check out the intro video starring Kenny Mayne above, or click the read link below for a few more snaps of the campus in Bristol.
Continue reading ESPN Front Row blog shows behind the scenes at the sports giant

ESPN Front Row blog shows behind the scenes at the sports giant originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 30 Mar 2011 11:54:00 EST. After being the first with 3D pro football Verizon's 3D lineup on FiOS was looking pretty thin, but that changes next month when it will finally start offering ESPN 3D. We've been anticipating its launch since last October, but after ESPNNetworks online streaming it was apparently next in line. The early adopting 3D-capable TV owners near you who subscribe to the Ultimate HD package will see it added to their lineups for no charge, but like U-Verse, it's a $10 add-on for all others. Make decisions regarding those Hamilton's quickly, next on the schedule are the Masters and NBA Playoffs, check the press release after the break for all the details.
Continue reading ESPN 3D will launch on Verizon FiOS April 5

ESPN 3D will launch on Verizon FiOS April 5 originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 21 Mar 2011 10:41:00 EST. While the season premiere of newsmagazine E:60 won't air in HD until April 12, a segment featuring Jeremy Schaap and the fastest knife thrower in the world will air shortly on ESPN 3D. Set for 6:40 p.m., apparently since E:60 was the first show of its type in HD, they decided to jump on the 3D train as well. One of the big questions about 3D has been whether or not it can add anything to genres outside of movies, nature documentaries and large events, this would appear to be one of the first tests.
Continue reading ESPN 3D airs its first news story tonight with E:60

ESPN 3D airs its first news story tonight with E:60 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 17 Mar 2011 17:08:00 EST. Take that Mark Cuban. Everyone's favorite HD network owning billionaire called 3D sports DOA after deciding there weren't many people asking about a 3D Super Bowl, but now ESPN's 3D network has queued up its second championship of the year, adding the NBA Finals to its previously scheduled slate of regular season and playoff broadcasts. ESPN 3D has been broadcasting around the clock for a few days now (unless you're watching DirecTV) but while repeats make for easy demo material, if 3D is going to go from an interesting sideshow to an in-demand feature it will take more high profile events like these. If the Mavericks manage to slide past the Lakers or Spurs for a deep playoff run, we'll check back with our friend Mark to see how he'd watch the game if he didn't already have a few seats permanently staked out in the arena.
Continue reading ESPN 3D adds the NBA Finals to its broadcast schedule

ESPN 3D adds the NBA Finals to its broadcast schedule originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 18:51:00 EST. In 2010, the annual Masters golf tournament was the jumping off point for 3D sports broadcasts when Comcast featured it, and this year it will have an even wider 3D audience by being featured for all five days on ESPN 3D. The plan is for two hours of coverage each day beginning with the Par 3 contest on Wednesday April 6 through Sunday between 5-7 p.m. As usual, ESPN's also doing its HD thing for the PAr 3 contest and first two days of the tournament with 4.5 hours of coverage a day just like it has since '08, but we'll be most interested to see just how much the prospective audience has grown since last spring.
Continue reading ESPN 3D is bringing five days of Masters coverage in April

ESPN 3D is bringing five days of Masters coverage in April originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 24 Feb 2011 11:37:00 EST. It's always seemed weird to us that given its advanced fiber technology Verizon's FiOS TV service opted to deliver its channels the same way as traditional cable companies, but starting today users can taste the future since it's added access to ESPN Networks online, following Time Warner and Brighthouse. That means you can stream the live ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and ESPN Buzzer Beater (and ESPN Goal Line when football season begins again) channels over any broadband connection after heading over to FiOSTVCentral or ESPNnetworks.com to get started. Support for other authenticated devices, like tablets and phones is still in the works per its deal with Disney but for now viewing is strictly a computer-only thing.
Continue reading Verizon FiOS TV service now offers ESPN channels over the internet

Verizon FiOS TV service now offers ESPN channels over the internet originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 17 Feb 2011 17:21:00 EST. The schedule is set for 24 hours of HD sports broadcasts on ESPN and ESPN2, while ESPN 3D is set up for 18 hours of action across nine individual windows.
