EA's Origin game service launches for Mac
AppleInsider reports Electronic Arts has officially launched its Origin game service for Mac. Origin is a digital distribution platform for EA games like The Sims 3, Batman: Arkham City Game of the Year Edition, Lego Batman, Harry Potter, Star Wars and many others, directly to Mac desktops and laptops. EA titles appear to be priced comparatively to the those in the Mac App Store. Up until now, Origin has only been available for PC and iOS users playing EA games, totaling about 40 million users. However, the Mac version was announced late last year and has been in alpha testing for Mac users since January of this year. Origin will offer in-game chat features and cloud saves, which let you continue your game from another Mac installed with Origin or supported EA games on iOS, or across other supported platforms. EA Origin Vice President of Production Mike Blank stated two reasons Origin has come to the Mac: a growing Mac market share and a vocal community of Mac gamers. Speaking to AppleInsider, Blank said, "We're seeing increased activity from our Mac gamers. In the past, we've brought games slower to market for Mac than for PC partly because the audience hasn't been at the same level. The growth of iOS and Mac devices, though, means we're starting to see gamers demand to play their games on devices that are becoming more prominent. I think, across the board, developers have focused on the PC platform, but I think you're going to start seeing some changes there. [Origin] is the first step in a strategy you're going to start seeing coming out of EA." One key detail Blank left out was whether the highly anticipated, latest version of SimCity -- due for release in March -- would be available to Mac users through the Origin Store. We can only hope!
