Practice your war face while you can, PlayStation 4 owners, because it won't be long before Edge of Reality, developers of hyperviolent shooter Loadout, will want to see it in action. The studio's popular game launches on PS4 December 16. Of course, simply launching on a new platform isn't enough; you have to throw in some goodies for the faithful customers picking up the product. Hence, Edge of Reality is adding a SuperFan Bonus Pack - unique to PlayStation Plus members - that colors the Loadout crew in blue and white warpaint. Loadout will be free to download and play when it launches. [Image: Edge of Reality]

Loadout has hosted plenty of shootouts between cartoonish, human-guided opponents, but developer Edge of Reality is planning on giving players a chance to work together against a greater evil: aliens. As detailed on the PlayStation Blog, Loadout's cooperative campaign mode will pit sharpshooters against the Kroad, a blue-skinned invading race that's just as savvy with offensive arsenals as humans. Should you want to prepare for the imminent invasion, the above video supplies examples of several Kroad classes. The PS Blog post notes that the campaign will show up "in the near future" on PS4 and PC, adding that the to-be-launched PS4 version of Loadout is due "very soon." [Image: Edge of Reality]

Loadout, a cartoonish third-person shooter that lets you build the weapon of your dreams and your enemies' nightmares, will be coming to Sony's PlayStation 4, developer Edge of Reality has announced. Like its Steam counterpart, Loadout on PS4 will cost zero dollars and zero cents to download and play, so try not to break the bank on it. Three months ago, Edge of Reality announced that the game boasted more than 2 million accounts. According to the PS4 announcement however, that number has steadily climbed to 3 million. Will the game hit 4 million before its release on PS4? Hard to say really, since Edge of Reality didn't give a release window for the game's console debut. [Image: Edge of Reality]

It doesn't seem like anyone in Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark is much for diplomacy, which makes sense when you consider their arms can turn into chain guns and missile launchers. Get a glimpse of the upcoming brawl in this cinematic, backed-by-bwaaam-sounds trailer. [Image: Activision]

Loadout developer Edge of Reality announced yesterday that the build-what-you-want, shoot-everyone-in-sight game had more than 2 million accounts get locked 'n' loaded - that's "created" in layman's terms - in the short span of two weeks. Note that this is 2 million accounts, not necessarily 2 million players. Nonetheless, it's an impressive figure for the free-to-play shooter. After all, those who signed up for Loadout's mayhem have logged more than 9 million hours since its release on January 31. That's a lot of bullets no matter which way you shoot it. Loadout's key feature may be its massive abundance of player-crafted guns, but as this developer-led walkthrough of the "Annihilation" gametype demonstrates, the game delivers more than just mix-and-match boomsticks - it also offers helpful butt syringes.

Come January 31, developer Edge of Reality will release Loadout, which differentiates itself from the legions of other free-to-play shooters by allowing players to build their own weaponry. "Loadout's weapon-crafting system runs so deep that there are over 44 billion possible creations to assemble, enabling players to transform weapon behavior in extreme ways, thereby defining their own class and play style," reads the developer's official description. "Combining weapon-crafting with acrobatic movement and over-the-top comedic violence, Loadout is packed with personality and style that deliver a fresh and satisfying alternative to the vast array of modern combat shooters." While that January 31 release date is still a few weeks off, those of you who can't wait to start slapping together increasingly ludicrous armaments can try the game this very minute via Steam's Early Access program. Keep in mind though, Early Access requires an entrance fee ranging from $10 to $40, while waiting patiently is free and shows admirable restraint.

If there's still any question in your mind that we're in the middle of a free-to-play trend, you can put it to rest right now: Most of the PAX show floor was taken up by indie titles currently in a closed beta, and heading towards a free-to-play "open beta release" later on this year. Firefall might be the highest profile of these, but Loadout, I think, deserves a spot right along Red 5's well-known title. The game's being developed by Edge of Reality, an Austin-based developer that has been making ports (including console versions of Dragon Age: Origins) and doing contract work for over ten years now. Loadout is the studio's first original title, which means the team is finally applying its knowledge and experience to something it directly owns.It shows in the game's current polish, even before the full beta launch: The graphics are fun and flashy, with really excellent touches in the controls and animation. It shows in team balance and mode choices, which are generally similar to Team Fortress 2 and other team-based shooters, but with some nice original flairs. And it shows most in the core mechanic, a custom weapon-building system that offers a lot of impressive possibilities for creating a gun that's entirely your own.%Gallery-164195%

  • Cipher Complex, not quite vaporware yet

Starcraft: Ghost. The Phantom. And let's face it, Sadness, too. Video game history is littered with the corpses of titles and projects that choked on their own ambition before making it to the finish line. So much so that we've become accustomed to second guessing games that stay out of the spotlight for any considerable length of time. Of course, devs are reluctant to publicly admit defeat, leaving us to remember from time to time to poke our heads in and see if that game we saw screenshots for a year ago still deserves a place on our radar. Recently we were reminded of The Incredible Hulk developer, Edge of Reality, and its stealth action game for the Xbox 360 and PS3, Cipher Complex, which has run noticeably silent since it was first announced in 2006. So we pinged company president Binu Philip, who reassured us that despite the absence of press, Cipher Complex is still on the way. "We are still working away on the title," he told us, adding however that the team is "not currently saying anything publicly about the game." For now, it seems video game history will have to wait for its next victim -- at least until another decides to stop chewing bubble gum and just lie down. %Gallery-35669%

Activision asks: "What could be more fun than using the Wii Remote to swing on a vine over blood thirsty crocodiles as retro-cool Pitfall Harry?!" We wonder: Uh, and how does one swing from a Wiimote exactly? Ready or not, a "new generation of gamers" will plummet to certain doom this fall, when Activision releases Pitfall ... The Big Adventure (oh, well, now you've sold us!).Developed by Edge of Reality, The Big Adventure features "innovative, accessible game mechanics developed specifically to take advantage of the Wii motion sensing controls," as players waggle over pits, shake up evil "shamen" (shamans?), and twist through puzzles. "It's a completely new experience for the gamer," says Binu Philip. Who? (Edge of Reality's president. Duh.)%Gallery-22643%

  • Hulk screens, Gamestop gets exclusive

The super-powered open world genre is now wide open thanks to Prototype being delayed, and The Incredible Hulk is going to be all there really is in city destruction this fall. Previous screens didn't show much else besides the Hulk himself, but these showcase the Abomination, New York and the graphics engine. Other than the screens, it was revealed that GameStop has some sort of exclusive in their package. The description on their website describes it as "Gamestop Exclusive Red Hulk" but who knows what that really means, as that description could apply to almost anything. So if you're going to buy the game from GameStop, be aware, you could be be getting everything from a skin to a sticker to an action figure. %Gallery-22173%

  • Incredible Hulk screens definitely star The Hulk

You might be asking yourself, "what's with the headline?" Well, what more is there to say about these screens of the upcoming Incredible Hulk movie-game other than The Hulk is in them. They don't look especially good and considering the team that brought us Ultimate Destruction is busy doing their own thing and back catalog of developer Edge of Reality consists of the Over the Hedge and Shark Tale game adaptations, we're definitely sticking with the comment that these screens have The Hulk in them. 'Nuff said. Gallery: The Incredible Hulk ("Next-gen" version)

And no, we're not talking about Hulk Hogan, but The Incredible Hulk. When a big Hollywood movie involving a comic book character is in the works, it's often not long before a video game medium is announced. A movie based on the Hulk is coming to Hollywood for the second time in five years, so we weren't surprised when Sega announced they'd be bringing a game based on The Incredible Hulk movie to all current-gen consoles.Marvel's less-than-jolly green giant will be hitting Wiis and other systems this June, to coincide with the movie's release. It will feature an open-world New York City environment, letting you unleash your destruction upon Manhattan, while of course saving Manhattan from destruction If you ask us, the whole idea going on a rampage and destroying the city as a human-turned-monster reminds us of, well, Rampage.[Via GamesPress press release]

Click to embiggen. That's right, we said "embiggen." It's a Banner year for Sega, with the publisher getting ready to unleash The Incredible Hulk this June alongside the Edward Norton-starring film and franchise reboot. Marvel's green goon will be gleefully smashing things on just about every platform imaginable (sorry, PSP!) in what we hope will be similar gameplay to that found in 2005's The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction. Sega promises that no building will be left unscathed as you do battle with classic Hulk villains such as Abomination, Bi-Beast and, judging by the background of the above screenshot, Mister Clip. After eight years of developing successful titles for various publishers, Edge of Reality is branching out on its own, self-funding an original IP, Cipher Complex. The plot -- special operative sent by US government to investigate mysterious recon satellite -- is as generic as they come, but Edge of Reality insists that it's employing groundbreaking concepts and mechanics that have been "incubating for years," which will shake up the current state of action games. Unfortunately, Edge of Reality isn't ready to share the details with us just yet.Cipher Complex is scheduled for release on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next year.
