NASCAR, the very popular circle-based sport, is coming back to video games. Developer DMi Games has acquired "certain NASCAR-related assets" from previous series dev Eutechnyx, and will partner with NASCAR Team Properties to acquire "certain exclusive licensing rights as part of a multi-year agreement. DMi says it is "hard at work on several new games," including a new NASCAR racing sim for PC, PS4 and Xbox One set to launch in 2016.

  • Such livery, very race: Dogecoin car to join NASCAR '14

In its quest to accurately recreate the thrills of NASCAR, developer Eutechnyx has revealed plans to distribute Josh Wise's car in an upcoming NASCAR '14 DLC release - a car that just so happens to bear the confusingly endearing face of doge. Unfamiliar with doge? We don't how that's even remotely possible at this point, but as a quick primer, the online humor researchers at Know Your Meme describe doge as "a slang term for 'dog' that is primarily associated with pictures of Shiba Inus (nicknamed "Shibe") and internal monologue captions on Tumblr." Over the past year, doge has grown into such a beloved Internet fixture that fans of the Bitcoin cryptocurrency developed Dogecoin, a similar virtual currency that bears the adorable, mischievous smile of doge in place of the Bitcoin logo or the face of a long-dead politician. That brings us to earlier this year, when teenaged NASCAR fan Denis Pavel was watching a race and noticed a black Ford with no sponsorship livery to speak of. Given that most NASCAR entrants are equal parts automobile and rolling billboard, this machine stuck out like a sore thumb, prompting Pavel to rally members of the NASCAR subreddit to raise the $50,000 necessary to cover Josh Wise's car in a full-body Dogecoin ad. The livery proved immediately popular, especially among younger NASCAR fans. Seeing this, NASCAR '14 developer Eutechnyx decided to add the vehicle to its racer in an upcoming DLC pack. "As the company behind the NASCAR video games and mobile games, we love to see more technology-oriented partners getting involved in NASCAR," Ed Martin, executive vice president of Eutechnyx, told CNN. "I think it will bring NASCAR to the attention of a lot of people that haven't been exposed before." So far there's no specific date for the DLC release, but we've attempted to contact publisher Deep Silver for further information and will report back when and if we hear anything. Auto Club Revolution, a free-to-play motorsport MMO thing developed by Eutechnyx, is gearing up for its 2.0 closed beta that begins on June 16th. The 2.0 is significant because the game initially launched in 2012. The new version is "nothing less than a full remodeling," according to the latest Eutechnyx press release. Oculus Rift support is also on the way, so if you've ever wanted an MMO featuring Fords, BMWs, and Bentleys instead of casters, healers, and tanks, ACR is probably worth a look. After spending a month in the lanes of Early Access, Warhammer 40k: Storm of Vengeance is lining up on iOS and PC users' Steam for an April 3 launch. Details for initial DLC packs have also been shared, outlining three additional unit types for developer Eutechnyx's lane defender. The Ork Stormboy will supply aerial support, made possible by the "rokkit" strapped to its back. The Deathwing Terminator and the Dark Angel Dreadnought will also be available, the latter of which will contribute a "serious extra punch to the Dark Angels arsenal," according to a press release. Ork Clan Skins are also coming, expanding the Oak Warboss' selection of clans to include the Bad Moons and Death Skulls. Each unit will be available at launch for both the iOS and PC versions, but prices have not been offered. [Image: Eutechnyx]

The PC beta for Warhammer 40k: Storm of Vengeance launched on Steam this week for $9.99, translating the Warhammer universe into a game of defending lanes. Aside from serving as a chance to play the game early, purchasing the Storm of Vengeance beta works as an early purchase of the final build once it's finished. Storm of Vengeance involves a disagreement between Grand Master Belial and Ork Warlord Ghazghkull Tharka on the planet Piscina IV. Players can guide either character's army through its respective group of 50 missions, progressing through a skill tree as they earn victories. As with any beta, the listing reminds us that this isn't representative of the final Storm of Vengeance build, and developer Eutechnyx is welcoming feedback on the game's forum. If you'd rather play this on the go, iOS and Android versions are planned for the first quarter of this year, which the Steam listing notes will be compatible with cross-platform multiplayer against PC players. • NASCAR 14 developer lays off 12, cites 'restructuring'

    02.18.2014

Eutechnyx, the British developer behind NASCAR '14, has dismissed a dozen employees, according to a report by Develop. As Develop points out, this is the second such round of layoffs to hit Eutechnyx in the last 12 months. In June, "about 10" people were released across a number of different divisions. Later that month, Eutechnyx closed its London office. CEO Darren Jobling regrets having to let people go, but states that these dismissals are a necessary part of the studio's ongoing restructuring efforts. "On Friday, we made unfortunately 12 people redundant. It was part of restructuring at the company," Jobling told Develop. "We've made no bones about the fact we wanted to move away from being a work-for-hire developer on consoles to publishing our own titles, so it's highly regrettable that we did have to make 12 people redundant." If there's one silver lining to this story, it's that NASCAR fans need not fear for the sake of NASCAR '14. Eutechnyx had finished development on the racing game long before these layoffs struck, and NASCAR '14 is still slated to reach the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC today. [Image: Deep Silver]

  • NASCAR '14 revs engines for online leagues, a series first

Just because the cars don't turn any direction but left in a real-life NASCAR race doesn't mean the NASCAR games can't change things up every now and again. NASCAR '14, developed by Eutechnyx, will be the first in the series to allow for players to form an online league. Up to 16 players can form a league and race through the Sprint Cup, according to Sports Illustrated's Extra Mustard. "Without question, this was the most requested feature," Eutechnyx Executive VP Ed Martin told Extra Mustard. "We expect hundreds of thousands of people to be running their own season." Unfortunately, none of those 16 people will be racing on next-gen consoles. Martin said there aren't enough consoles out in the wild yet to justify development costs. "The nail in the coffin was when a guy from Sony talked about Gran Turismo, and how their new game was launching on PS3. He said something like, 'Why would we put Gran Turismo on a console that has zero units in the market when there are 150 million PlayStation 3s out there?'" "It costs us about $6 million to develop a next-gen version of NASCAR. You have to sell an awful lot of copies in order to meet the development costs, on top of all the licensing," Martins noted. "We own the rights, and we absolutely have plans, but it won't be later this year."

UK developer Eutechnyx has announced NASCAR '14, a new game based on the 'as American as apple pie' stock car racing series license, will launch on February 18. The racing title will arrive for $50 on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Apart from the standard (or automatic) career mode and licensed everything, NASCAR '14 features a "Highlights" mode, that recreates events from the season right down to exact weather conditions and racer placement. And then you drive in circles, I guess, I'm assuming that's the majority of what the gameplay is, but I'm Canadian, so what do I know? Previously a franchise handled by Activision (and EA before them), the NASCAR licence is now in the caring hands of zombie and dildo-slinging publisher Deep Silver. With Activision out of the picture for distribution, Eutechnyx said it would self-publish the next game in its NASCAR series before Deep Silver jumped on board as publisher.

Still waiting for Warhammer 40,000 to break into the MMO space? Well, how about a MOBA instead? European developer Eutechnyx is hard at work on Storm of Vengeance for an early 2014 release. Storm of Vengeance pits the Dark Angel Space Marines against Orks in classic lane strategy. It looks to be based on the Games Workshop campaign of the same name. The MOBA will be coming to both PC and mobile platforms. Eutechnyx is a UK developer with a history of mostly creating racing games such as Auto Club Revolution and NASCAR The Game 2011.

Developer Eutechnyx concludes its DLC plans for the sim-styled stock car racer NASCAR The Game: Inside Line with this week's release of the game's final add-on content pack for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Nintendo Wii. Released on a regular basis since the game's launch late last year, NASCAR's "Inside Line Highlights" recreate a wide range of past racing scenarios, and are unlockable using in-game currency. Inside Line hosts a grand total of 28 DLC releases, all of which are bundled in the downloadable "Inside Line Pack," available for $24.99 via the PlayStation Network and the Xbox Live Marketplace. NASCAR The Game: Inside Line marks Activision's final entry in the NASCAR series, as publisher Deep Silver will take over publishing duties for next year's NASCAR 14.

Deep Silver will publish the next iteration of developer Eutechnyx's licensed racing game in early 2014, NASCAR 14. Coming to PS3 and Xbox 360, the game will feature drop-in, drop-out online multiplayer races for up to 16 players as well as online league play with challenges, rankings and "dynamic statistics" support. Players can also play through the game's career mode, acquiring sponsorship and building their cars up to win races. NASCAR 14 is the first entry in the series published by Deep Silver, as Activision handled the distribution of the series since the 2011 release of NASCAR: The Game 2011, which followed EA's cancellation of the series in September 2009. Eutechnyx announced plans to self-publish the series in June, prior to Deep Silver picking up the game's publishing rights. Deep Silver launched a Facebook app to allow fans to vote on NASCAR 14's cover driver. The winning driver will be announced in early December.

Ride to Hell, the Deep Silver biker game first announced in 2008 before dropping off the radar for several years, may make a surprise arrival on retail shelves in the near future. A list of achievements, posted today by Xbox360Achievements, is the latest piece of growing evidence that the long-unseen game is due for release soon.Ride to Hell was initially expected on Xbox 360 in Q2 2009, but after missing its release window it was rumored to be canceled. Earlier this year, Deep Silver confirmed to Polygon the game is still in development, saying there would be announcements on it soon. Shortly after, a game called Ride to Hell: Retribution received a multiplatform rating from the Australian Classification Board, with developer Eutechnyx listed as the author and Deep Silver as the publisher. The achievements themselves indicate a mixture of shooting with biking elements. When it was first announced in 2008, Deep Silver introduced Ride to Hell as "aimed heavily at the player who wants to become fully involved in the original West Coast biker culture" with a ""hard drinking, bare-knuckle environment." Then again, this was some five years ago. We've reached out to Deep Silver for comment.

Auto Club Revolution doesn't get a lot of ink from the mainstream MMO press, but it's a pretty interesting title if you're a gearhead. It's more of a virtual world and community hub than a typical progression game (but there is plenty of progression to be had nonetheless). Eutechnyx has just announced a partnership with BMW that gives players a chance to drive and customize a virtual version of the company's new 1 Series M Coupe. The ACR coupe was built with input from BMW designers, as was the new Victoria Harbour road course that you'll drive it on. ACR is a free-to-play racing title that delivers a "console-quality racing experience," according to Eutechnyx. Gamers can collect, customize, and race models from over 50 real-world manufacturers. Visit the game's official website and sign up to access the challenges needed to unlock your new BMW. [Source: Eutechnyx press release]

For whatever reason, racing titles have yet to really hit the MMO mainstream. Sure there's Need for Speed World, Test Drive Unlimited 2, iRacing, and the late, great Motor City Online. None of them has broken away from the pack, though, which leaves room for a new entry. Auto Club Revolution has just entered its open beta phase, and Eutechnyx hopes to carve out a foothold for itself thanks to over 40 licensed car manufacturers, 150-plus upgrade parts, and a selection of accurately modeled real-life race tracks that are all completely free. ACR is free-to-play, and players can unlock new vehicles at no cost via the game's progression mechanics. There's a dual currency system in place that mixes earned credits with E-Bucks, and both may be used to purchase upgrades, and customization options. The game also features single-player challenges and a variety of racing modes. If that sounds like something you'd like to check out for free, head to the official site to join the open beta. The rumors are true. Activision is now publishing NASCAR games, after EA's abandonment of the racing license. As if to rub it in, the first Eutechnyx-developed racer has been named NASCAR The Game 2011. As in "the only game." ESPN revealed that Activision is acting as a distributor for the title, and the licensing deal is between NASCAR and Eutechnyx directly. "[NASCAR] really got excited about this because this isn't some big publisher using some anonymous external developer," Eutechnyx's North American EVP Ed Martin told ESPN. "We are out there with these guys. We are working with not only NASCAR, but the drivers and the R&D center and the engine builders and everyone is really excited about the fact that we are right there with them. Eutechnyx owns the license, we're developing the game, and it's a dynamic partnership with Activision. They've been great to work with." If EA's cancellation of its series of NASCAR games has left your need -- your need for speed -- unsatisfied, you'll want to wish on all your lucky stars that this particular rumor is legit. A since-closed thread on the forums of developer Eutechnyx purportedly includes a logo and concept art for NASCAR 2011. VG247 reports that UK sources have confirmed that the title is real and will be published by Activision. Eutechnyx's Dave Thompson explained to a stock car enthusiast on Twitter that "an announcement is being made soon about our plans," so we shouldn't have to wait long to see if this story pans out. In any event, we're going to go watch Days of Thunder and Talladega Nights a few times so we can stock up on references -- if we end up writing about a NASCAR game over the next year, we're going to need something to say.

There are some games that seem like they just beg to be made into an MMO. The concept of the Gran Turismo series, for instance -- a game where you could purchase and drive almost any car, from a high-performance race machine to a tiny Japanese cargo truck. While there are no indications that the venerable franchise is going to head into the crowded world of full-scale MMOs, developer Eutechnyx, maker of the recent Ferrari Challenge and Supercar Challenge among others, has recently announced that they intend to work on a driving MMO allowing you to take out all manner of licensed cars. Titled Auto Club Revolution, the game is slated to be free-to-play by North American operations director Todd Eckert. The intention is to allow a variety of licensed cars to be driven by players, although which cars will be available will depend on which manufacturers allow it. The company seems to be primed to use the same general development tools from their earlier offerings, meaning that the actual racing engine will be thoroughly tested. Only time will tell how far down the road the game will get, although we can only hope for a game wherein a Yugo and a first-generation Saga can race to the finish.
