Ubisoft revealed a teaser trailer today for Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix. The upcoming Netflix anime is based on the 2013 Blood Dragon expansion for Far Cry 3 — but it appears to be at least as much of a tongue-in-cheek remix of Ubisoft IP and early 90s nostalgia.

Ubisoft is no stranger to TV and movies. Its media division, Ubisoft Motion Pictures, has created four seasons of Rabbids Invasion thus far, and produced the mediocre adaptation of Assassin's Creed. That's not to mention films like Uwe Boll's Far Cry and the controversial Prince of Persia, which were licensed from the publisher. The company is focusing on the small screen for now though, and hopes to reach kids and young adults. The animated series will be comprised of adaptations from titles like Watch Dogs and Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon.

  • Hunt down Far Cry 4's Ultimate Kyrat Edition in EMEA territories

Wildlife antagonists can already reserve Far Cry 4's Kyrat Edition, which includes the Himalayan adventure, bonus missions following Far Cry 3's harpoon gun-equipped Hurk, a physical travel journal, a propaganda poster and an 8-inch figurine of villain Pagan Min perched on an elephant's trunk. As extensive as the offering is, it lacks the season pass, Future Pack metal box and collector's case offered in the EMEA region-exclusive Ultimate Kyrat Edition, which a press release states is exclusively available through the UPlay Shop for PS4, Xbox One and PC at £89.99. GameStop lists Far Cry 4's season pass as a $30 (£18) purchase, which should help you decide whether there's value in upgrading from the less-than-ultimate, season pass-less Kyrat Edition. Of course, we still don't know what the pass' content even involves – if you're not one for trust falls and can't justify the elaborate Kyrat Edition, you can still get Hurk's harpoon gun and his trio of missions by pre-ordering a regular copy of Far Cry 4. • Far Cry 4 confirmed by Ubisoft, coming November 18

Far Cry 4 has been confirmed by a Ubisoft financial report for the fiscal year, and is expected to hit PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC on November 18, 2014. The game will take place in Kyrat, a fictional region of the Himalayas, which suffers under the reign of a self-appointed king. "The year's performance will be led by five games," Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said. "Assassin's Creed Unity, Far Cry 4, Just Dance, The Crew and Watch Dogs." Being this is an official report from the company, we can take this to be an official confirmation of the game, officially. Still, it's not that big of a shock - back in February there was a mounting pile of evidence for the game's existence, and considering the 6 million units Far Cry 3 shipped and the 1 million sales of its spin-off, Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon, it's no wonder that Ubisoft would return to the brand. Pre-orders for the game are now live, and those who throw their cash down early will receive an upgrade to the Limited Edition, which comes with three single-player missions centered around Hurk, a character from Far Cry 3. Players who pre-order will also receive Hurk's signature weapon, a harpoon gun called "The Impaler." [Image: Ubisoft]

The next entry in Ubisoft's expansive, open-world Far Cry franchise will arrive in the first half of next year, according to a Eurogamer report. Citing unnamed "people familiar with the project," Eurogamer claims that the game will forgo another romp through the jungles in favor of a visit to the Himalaya mountain range. Gameplay details are scant, but Eurogamer believes that the new setting will offer players wholly novel activities such as riding on elephants, while the fan-favorite hunting sections will make a return with local fauna as prey. Far Cry 4 is reportedly heading to Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC and we can expect to hear more details on the game at E3 2014 in June. When reached for comment, Ubisoft was unwilling to discuss Far Cry 4, though representatives say they'll have more information for us if and when such a title enters development. [Image: Ubisoft]

  • Far Cry Classic landing on US shores next week

Far Cry Classic will launch on February 11 in North America, Ubisoft announced. The HD revamp of the Crytek-developed original will be available on Xbox Live and PSN for $10 one day before it lands on Xbox 360 and PS3 in Europe. Far Cry first launched on PC in May 2004, and had players assuming the role of Jack Carver, a captain being pursued by a team of "highly trained mercenaries." The open world FPS was set on a South Pacific archipelago with a variety of environments ranging from rain forests to canyons. Ubisoft says Far Cry Classic will include "revamped cut scenes" as well as a new user interface. [Image: Ubisoft]

Though Far Cry Classic will reach European territories as part of the Far Cry: The Wild Expedition compilation, it will also see a standalone release on the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network come February 12. Whether the game will appear in America remains unknown. Ubisoft describes Far Cry Classic as an "HD revamp" of the original Crytek-developed shooter. "Far Cry Classic is the premiere and ultimate console version of the very first Far Cry game," reads the publisher's official description. "Take the role of charter boat captain, Jack Carver, who finds himself hunted by an unrelenting team of highly trained mercenaries in this nature-gone-wrong FPS adventure. This HD revamp features stunningly realistic foliage, real-time day and night cycles, drivable underwater and flying vehicles which you can commandeer, and more..." When it debuts on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade, Far Cry Classic will cost European gamers £8. There is no word on a price point for the still-hypothetical US release of Far Cry Classic, nor any official word confirming that the game will appear outside of Europe. Ubisoft did recently announce a Far Cry Compilation for American fans, but Far Cry Classic is omitted from that collection. We've attempted to contact Ubisoft for more information, but have yet to hear back.

  • 'Drive' composer Cliff Martinez mentions work on Far Cry 4

Far Cry 4 has apparently been outed by Cliff Martinez, composer for the film Drive and former Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer. Martinez said he is "working on a video game called Far Cry 4" in an interview with Lost in the Multiplex. The quote has since been deleted, but can still be viewed through a cached version of the page, which we've included in a screenshot above. While Ubisoft hasn't announced Far Cry 4 yet, it said in July that the game is "clearly going to happen." It must have been waiting for a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee to make the announcement. We've reached out to Ubisoft and will update as we learn more.

  • Bungie talks Destiny's connected play, Far Cry and Borderlands influence

    by

In an interview with Edge Magazine, Destiny creative director Joe Staten took a moment to acknowledge the contributions of other open world shooters to the Destiny development process. Staten noted that the dev team analyzes titles like Borderlands and Far Cry and looks at "the things they're doing well and also at opportunities they might have missed that we can capitalize on." One big missed opportunity according to Staten? Encountering other players in the wild: You can party up with a group of people and then go around with that group, but never in Borderlands are you going to collide with a group of other people doing it too. We don't just do that once or twice in the game, we do that all the time, everywhere. You see other people on the horizon, hear gunfire over a hill and see space magic flying behind some trees, and you know...there are other people out here, that [changes everything]. Colliding with other people is sort of the core component of most MMOs, though Destiny may be the first big console-specific shooter to rely on such mechanics to fill out its game world. Staten also confirmed that Destiny will offer a leveling system complete with talent points -- another feature fans of MMOs will likely find quite familiar.

  • Ubifilms for Ghost Recon, Watch Dogs, Far Cry and Rabbids coming

Ubisoft has been bitten by the acting bug it seems, as the company is preparing film adaptations of Watch Dogs, Ghost Recon, Far Cry and its zany mascots, the Rabbids – of course, this won't be the first movie to bear the Far Cry name. For all these films, Ubisoft will have full creative control, Variety reports. Ubisoft will select screenwriters, directors, actors and other positions necessary to make these movies, and isn't looking to simply repeat the games' existing stories. Last week, Ubisoft announced it was working with Michael Bay to bring Ghost Recon to the big screen at Warner Bros – an announcement we missed during the madness of E3. "These are not adaptations," Ubisoft Motion Picture CEO Jean-Julien Baronnet told Variety. "We will create a brand new story. Always." The Rabbids film – not to be confused with the TV show announced last week – will be a live-action film where the Rabbids star as CG characters, like The Smurfs, Alvin and the Chipmunks or Bill Murray's only regret, Garfield. There is currently no timetable for these films, as Ubisoft still needs to secure scriptwriters. Ubisoft has two other films in the works right now: an Assassin's Creed movie starring Michael Fassbender – which has been pushed a month to June 2015 – and a Splinter Cell flick with Tom Hardy as Sam Fisher.

Ubisoft has released its financial information for the 12 month period ending March 31, 2013, which by all accounts seems to have been a pretty legit fiscal year for the publisher/developer conglomerate. The company crossed the finish line with €1.256 billion ($1.615 billion) in revenue and €64.8 million ($83.3 million) in profit, an 18.3 and 73.7-percent year-over-year increase, respectively, when compared to the €1.061 billion ($1.364 billion) in revenue and €37.3 million ($47.9 million) in profit recorded at the end of 2012. Ubisoft contributes its stellar year to the continued success of its main three franchises, Assassin's Creed, Just Dance and Far Cry, the latest entries in which have all sold between six and 12 million copies.
