The geniuses at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/festo">Festo's</a> Bionic Learning Network are well known for their fascination with robotic animals, and their latest creation is no exception. Dubbed the SmartBird, this autonomous bionic bird -- modelled on herring gulls -- graces the sky with its sophisticated two meter-long wings, which utilize a bending torso for lifelike directional control. What's more, this robot is also capable of taking off and landing on its own, but it can also be controlled and monitored from afar using <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/zigbee">ZigBee</a> radio. Amazingly, all of this round up to just one pound, meaning the SmartBird can happily float about with moderate flapping. Jump past the break for some agile in-flight action, accompanied by an animation detailing the inner workings.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/25/festos-smartbird-robot-takes-off-with-elegance-doesnt-fight-s/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Festo's SmartBird robot takes off with elegance, doesn't poop on you (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/25/festos-smartbird-robot-takes-off-with-elegance-doesnt-fight-s/">Festo's SmartBird robot takes off with elegance, doesn't poop on you (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 25 Mar 2011 01:16:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Festo/">Festo's</a> unveiled some pretty impressive tech over the years, from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/24/festos-fluidic-muscles-make-us-all-look-weak/">fluidic muscles</a> to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/festos-flying-airpenguin-robot-induces-daydreaming-beyond-the-s/">robotic flying penguins</a>, but this next one has us a bit worried. The Bionic Handling Assistant is ostensibly patterned after the elephant's trunk, designed to be both agile and delicate... but have you seen the thing? We're pretty sure that it was patterned after the tentacles of Doctor Octopus, and that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/robotapocalypse">it will crush you and everyone you care about</a> without a second thought. But if you're the trusting type, the company assures you that this is just the thing for all those delicate processes you've been meaning to automate but haven't been able to in the past: everything from handling fruit to animal husbandry is a cinch with this "hierarchically arranged system of muscles and evolutionary optimized movement patterns"! But don't take our word for it: peep the video after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/26/festos-strong-and-agile-robot-arm-is-based-on-the-elephants-tr/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Festo's strong and agile robot arm is based on the elephant's trunk, scares the bejesus out of us (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/26/festos-strong-and-agile-robot-arm-is-based-on-the-elephants-tr/">Festo's strong and agile robot arm is based on the elephant's trunk, scares the bejesus out of us (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 26 Apr 2010 05:53:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/festo">Festo</a> may've already stirred up plenty of attention with its mesmerizing <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/festos-flying-airpenguin-robot-induces-daydreaming-beyond-the-s/">AirPenguin</a> blimp, but let's not forget its other weapon -- <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/fluidic+muscle">fluidic muscles</a> (elastomer tubes that contract when filled with fluid). At <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/thegadgetshowlive2010">The Gadget Show Live</a> in the UK, this German company was also showing off its AirMotion Ride car-racing simulator -- essentially a driver's seat suspended from just six fluidic muscles for the six degrees of freedom, while sound and vision are handled by its 5.1 surround sound speakers and a projector. The company claims that each of these lightweight muscles can generate forces of up to 1,600N, and since there are no mechanical parts inside, they make an ideal replacement for conventional hydraulic plungers as used on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/forcedynamics">Force Dynamics'</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/10/motion-sim-4dof-racing-simulator-will-take-your-retirement-fund/">Motion-Sim's</a> simulators. You can see Festo's machine in action after the break, but promise us that you won't judge our driving ability.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festo-airmotion-ride-hands-on/">Festo AirMotion Ride hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festo-airmotion-ride-hands-on/#2875425"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/festoairmotionride2010-04-07-0_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festo-airmotion-ride-hands-on/#2875427"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/festoairmotionride2010-04-07-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festo-airmotion-ride-hands-on/#2875429"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/festoairmotionride2010-04-07-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festo-airmotion-ride-hands-on/#2875432"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/festoairmotionride2010-04-07-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festo-airmotion-ride-hands-on/#2875431"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/festoairmotionride2010-04-07-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/09/engadget-test-drives-festo-airmotion-ride-humiliates-self-vide/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Engadget test-drives Festo AirMotion Ride, humiliates self (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/09/engadget-test-drives-festo-airmotion-ride-humiliates-self-vide/">Engadget test-drives Festo AirMotion Ride, humiliates self (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 09 Apr 2010 13:37:00 EST. Penguins. Such graceful creatures. Mommy never told us why these birds don't fly, but here's proof that this won't be a concern for our little 'uns. What you're looking at is the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/festo">Festo</a> AirPenguin's rare appearance outside its German labs -- the Gotengo-esque airship is at The Gadget Show Live in Birmingham, UK this week. Sure, this baby's a bit old, but being up close and personal with it is <em>way</em> more sensational than watching the mere 40-second-long segment <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/18/festo-shows-off-robot-penguins-and-other-visions-of-the-future/">from last time</a>, and at least we now know it's the real deal. Video after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festos-bionic-airpenguin-robot-doesnt-blow-bubbles-but-will-blow-your-mind/">Festo's bionic AirPenguin robot doesn't blow bubbles, but will blow your mind</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festos-bionic-airpenguin-robot-doesnt-blow-bubbles-but-will-blow-your-mind/#2873218"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/festoairpenguin2010-04-07-1-1270677244_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festos-bionic-airpenguin-robot-doesnt-blow-bubbles-but-will-blow-your-mind/#2873219"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/festoairpenguin2010-04-07-2-1270677250_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festos-bionic-airpenguin-robot-doesnt-blow-bubbles-but-will-blow-your-mind/#2873220"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/festoairpenguin2010-04-07-3-1270677254_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festos-bionic-airpenguin-robot-doesnt-blow-bubbles-but-will-blow-your-mind/#2873221"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/festoairpenguin2010-04-07-4-1270677257_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/festos-bionic-airpenguin-robot-doesnt-blow-bubbles-but-will-blow-your-mind/#2873222"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/04/festoairpenguin2010-04-07-5-1270677260_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/festos-flying-airpenguin-robot-induces-daydreaming-beyond-the-s/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Festo's flying AirPenguin robot induces daydreaming beyond the sea (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/08/festos-flying-airpenguin-robot-induces-daydreaming-beyond-the-s/">Festo's flying AirPenguin robot induces daydreaming beyond the sea (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 08 Apr 2010 10:48:00 EST. <div align="left">The folks at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/festo">Festo</a> have already proven themselves to be more than adept some <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/28/festo-airjelly-flies-through-the-air-with-the-greatest-of-ease/">intoxicating</a>, slightly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/30/robot-arm-issues-subtle-plea-for-help-in-promotional-video/">unnerving</a> feats of robotics, but they look to have really outdone themselves with their latest group of creations, which all fall under the banner of the company's Bionic Learning Network. While they're all certainly impressive, the real star is undoubtedly the AquaPenguin which, in addition to being creepily realistic, is fully autonomous and even able to outperform its real-life counterpart in a few tasks, like swimming backwards. Of course, Festo apparently couldn't help themselves and also built a flying, blimp-like AirPenguin, and they applied some of the same basic technology to a number of other devices, including a robot arm that's precise enough to change a lightbulb, and a freestanding interactive wall that's sure to spruce up any lobby. Hit up the YouTube link below for a video that provides a brief overview of the whole lot, or head on over to Festo's site for the even better German version (plus some additional details on the projects themselves).<br /><br /><a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L5JHMpLIqO4">Read</a> - YouTube, "Festo Bionic Learning Network 2009"<br /><a href="http://www.festo.com/cms/de_de/9726.htm">Read</a> - Festo<br /><br />[Thanks, Gunter]</div>

We'd explain this thing, but we're really having trouble taking our eyes off of it long enough to string some full sentences together. Suffice it to say <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Festo/">Festo</a>'s AirJelly is powered by some magical jelly fish properties, a lithium-ion battery, an electric motor and a bit of helium. If that's not floaty enough for you, there's also a water version, AquaJelly. Videos of both are after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/28/festo-airjelly-flies-through-the-air-with-the-greatest-of-ease/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Festo AirJelly flies through the air with the greatest of ease</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/robots/" rel="tag">Robots</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/04/28/festo-airjelly-flies-through-the-air-with-the-greatest-of-ease/">Festo AirJelly flies through the air with the greatest of ease</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 28 Apr 2008 17:46:00 EST. <div align="left">Apparently looking to show off the dexterity of its "Airic's_arm," automation firm Festo recently put together a slick promotional video that appears to show the robot arm writing "HELLO" on a touchscreen monitor. It seems that the arm may have had ideas of its own, however, as the writing appears to spell out "HELP" as much as it does "HELLO." Exactly what sort of distress the arm had to endure to cause it to issue this potentially non-existent plea, we're not sure. but we'd recommend that the folks at Festo not turn their back on the thing unless they want some robot arms of their own. Hit up the read link below for the complete video.<br />

Yeah, we've seen some pretty <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/21/rocket-powered-mechanical-arm-might-boost-prosthetic-tech/">fancy</a> robotic arm work <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/20/dean-kamens-robotic-prosthetic-arm-gets-detailed-on-video/">already</a> this year, but Festo is out to show 'em all up with its fluidic muscle-packin' Airic's_arm. This robotic <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=prosthesis">prosthesis</a> sports a "bone structure" which mimics that found on a real live human, and can be moved via the 30 "muscles" built within. Essentially, Festo's approach to movement relies on "an elastomer tube reinforced by aramid fibers, which contract quickly and exert a pulling force when they're filled with a blast of compressed air or liquid." Of course, you'll notice it doesn't offer quite the same range as less <a href="http://www.engadget.com/search/?q=bionic">bionic</a> alternatives, but this thing's pretty accurate, indeed. Check it out for yourself, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/video/">video</a>'s right down there.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.designnews.com/blog/320000232/post/290008429.html">DesignNews</a>]<br /><a href="http://www.festo.com/INetDomino/coorp_sites/en/ffeed49f2394ea43c12572b9006f7032.htm">Read</a> - Festo's Airic's_arm<br /><a href="http://www.festo.com/INetDomino/coorp_sites/en/1e70ac4a67fcfb11c12572d0004d3d44.htm">Read</a> - Video of Airic's_arm in action<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/robots/" rel="tag">Robots</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/08/24/festos-fluidic-muscles-make-us-all-look-weak/">Festo's fluidic muscles make us all look weak</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 24 Aug 2007 10:29:00 EST.
