The 2D puzzle platformer Fez from the independent game studio Polytron has had a long road in its journey to iOS, but now it's finally here. You can now purchase Fez Pocket Edition from the App Store for $4.99. It's designed for both the iPhone and the iPad.

It might be five years old, but Fez remains a masterclass in indie puzzle-platforming. The bright pixel art, the mesmerizing Disasterpiece soundtrack and perspective-shifting gameplay comes together in a wonderfully mysterious and serene collectathon. Following its release on Xbox 360, PC, Mac and various PlayStation hardware, Polytron is bringing the game to iOS. In a short teaser trailer, the eyepatch-wielding Geezer tells Gomez, the main character, how the "adventure is ready." A flashy cube appears in the sky, before the entire scene pans out to reveal the game running on an iPad. So yeah, you can expect a tablet-optimized version.

We aren't getting a sequel to the adorable retro indie puzzler Fez well... ever. But that doesn't mean developer Polytron is out of things to sell fans. The Canadian company hopes the wound it opened by canceling the sequel won't deter you from dropping $100 on a special edition of the game that features a rather handsome hardcover notebook, "bound in red canvas with debossed gold foil inlay presented in a matching slipcase," download codes for PC and OSX versions of the game and a copy of its killer soundtrack from composer Disasterpeace.

Music can tame the most savage beast, but when you're slinking around a cargo ship as a super spy, playing cowboy or making your way toward a massive mountain in the distance, sometimes you don't want calm. You want dirty, wistful or haunting tracks to fit the action onscreen. The best video game scores stick with you long after you turn the TV off, though, and that's what we want to highlight here. We're pretty big fans of how they've progressed throughout the years from simple beeps and boops to full-blown symphonic masterpieces that've traveled through concert halls around the world. Just below you'll find the scores the Engadget Gaming crew's most fond of and one that we don't particularly care for but felt like calling attention to anyhow. Have a favorite of your own that didn't make the list? Hit the comments below.

After more than ten years devoted to video games and the people who make them, Joystiq is closing its doors. We won't be reporting on the best games of 2015, so join us for one last hurrah as the Joystiq family reveals their Games of a Lifetime. Tetris Grandma can beat you at Tetris. This was a foundation of my childhood and an irrefutable truth as I was growing up. Grandma would sit in her office, in front of a bulky 90s-era television, NES plugged in, and she would dominate level after level of rapidly falling tetrominos. My cousins and I would try to do the same and always end up supremely behind her high scores, but always ready to try just one more round. To this day, I'm still ready. Here's to you, Grandma, my own Original Gamer, and here's to Tetris, my Original Game.

    03.24.2014

March Madness rolls on this weekend with the Sweet Sixteen and Elite Eight games, but with our billion dollar brackets already destroyed, what else is there to watch? The Academy Awards Best Picture nominee march continues this week with the release of The Wolf of Wall Street on Blu-ray (how can Leo not have an Oscar?) and Continuum S2, while on TV The Walking Dead wraps up its fourth season, Helix reaches its first season finale and Louis CK brings his talents to Saturday Night Live. We'll have to put our DVRs to work on Saturday though, since Hannibal Burress' special is airing on Comedy Central around the same time. Before all that however, we'll bid a final farewell to USA's Psych, which is airing its series finale this week after eight seasons (and a movie?). For games there's no next-gen exclusive blockbusters this week, but PlayStation owners can cross buy a port of Fez across Vita, PS3 and PS4. Check after the break for trailers plus our weekly listing of what to look out for in TV, Blu-ray and gaming.

Sony confirmed Monster Hunter Freedom Unite, the last of March's PlayStation Plus games, joins the Instant Game Collection tomorrow. The PSP action-RPG is playable as a download on Vita, and if you're in to big weapons, big creatures to defeat, demanding combat and playing with friends, you might lose a lot of hours to it. Plus members can also take advantage of discounts on the new PlayStation versions of Fez, which arrive on PS4, PS3, and Vita tomorrow in North America. Fez is a very different game to Monster Hunter Freedom Unite but its puzzles are no less demanding in their own right. The colorful 2D-or-is-it-3D platformer has a regular price of $13 that comes down to $10.39 with a Plus membership. Meanwhile, there are also discounts on BioShock 1 and 2, each half-price at $5, and on DLC for BioShock Infinite including the first episode of Burial at Sea. You can find the full list of discounts on the PlayStation Blog. [Image: Capcom]

  • Fez, Starseed Pilgrim, Beatbuddy arrive late to the Humble Bundle 11 party

    02.25.2014

The already-tempting smorgasbord of Humble Indie Bundle 11 has been bolstered by the addition of three new games today: Fez, Starseed Pilgrim and Beatbuddy. Fez is Polytron Corporation's puzzle-platformer about Gomez, a cute sprite stuck in a seemingly 2D world. After receiving a magical hat, Gomez discovers the ability to rotate 2D planes, unlocking a third dimension within the game world. Starseed Pilgrim, an IGF design nominee, is all about tending a symphonic garden. As a galactic gardener, you must populate the vast white void of space with color and music. Beatbuddy: Tale of the Guardians is an underwater exploration game driven by music. As the titular Beatbuddy, players navigate beautiful hand-drawn environments in search of a way to save the residents of Symphonia. As with previous Humble Bundles, all three of these games are immediately unlocked for those who have already purchased the bundle. Would-be spenders need to contribute more than the going average, which is just shy of $5 right now, in order to snag these three. [Image: Polytron Corporation]

There's another batch of daily deals for Xbox Live end-of-year sale, and today's batch supposedly comprise "2D modern classics," namely Terraria, Spelunky, and Fez. Putting aside if you can even call something a "modern classic," isn't that forgetting that whole other dimension of Fez? No, we didn't mean Phil Fish. Anyway, we're not here to talk semantics: For today only, Fez and Spelunky are cut by 75 percent to $2.49 and $3.74 respectively, while Terraria digs down to a third of its normal price at $4.94. Also, don't forget the Xbox 360 Store has a whole bunch of games staying discounted across the week, including FIFA 14, Bioshock Infinite, and Castle of Illusion.

That's a lot of tiny red hats. Fez has sold more than 1 million copies across all platforms – Xbox 360, PC, Mac and Linux – developer Polytron Corporation announced today. In its celebratory post, Polytron thanked everyone: "Thank you for buying the game! Thank you for stealing it! Thank you for telling your friends about it! Thank you for buying it again when it came out on PC! Thank you for boycotting it so well! Thank you for putting up with the bullshit! Thank you for all your love letters, fan art, cosplays and freakin' tattoos you got, you crazy bastards! Thank you, thank you, thank you!" Fez hit XBLA first in April 2012, and we found it to be an absolute joy. It later came to Steam for PC, Mac and Linux, and during two days of the Steam Summer Sale this year, Fez raked up 105,000 sales. Fez is on its way to PS3, Vita and PS4. A sequel to Fez was announced in June and canceled in July.

The Humble Indie Bundle 9 just added a quintet of new games. Limbo, Rocketbirds: Hardboiled Chicken, Bastion and A Virus Named Tom are now available to would-be purchasers and those who've already coughed up dough for the collection alike. This latest Humble Bundle launched just last week and is headlined by FTL, Fez and Mark of the Ninja, in addition to Brutal Legend, Trine 2: Complete Story and a special beta version of Eets: Munchies. This latest grouping of games has little over six days left on its run, at which point it'll be retired for the next insanely tempting Humble Indie Bundle collection.

The Humble Bundle is easily the best deal available on the internet when it comes to pay-what-you-want entertainment. It works on a sliding scale of price / morality. You pay whatever you want for a block of games / movies / comedy albums / e-books etc, from zero dollars on. Buyers who pay more than the average get bonus content. It's truly a wonderful idea. Currently, the deal being offered is the Humble Indie Bundle 9, a set of four incredible games for your standard customers with two extra games for people who pay more than US$4.59. That's right -- six full games for less than a dollar apiece. More importantly, this particular bundle marks the Mac debut of two of these titles. The basic package comes with Trine 2: Complete Story, Mark of the Ninja (for the first time on Mac), Eets Munchies Beta and the Jack Black-starring heavy metal role-playing game Brütal Legend. If you pay more than the standard amount you also get FTL: Faster Than Light and the legendary 2D platformer in a 3D world, Fez. You can watch the bundle's trailer below. Head over to the Humble Bundle website now and get stocked up on games.

    09.12.2013

We've seen the Humble Bundle be used to introduce some big games to new platforms in the past, and the latest offering is no exception. The 9th edition of the Indie Bundle sees both indie game favorite Fez and Mark of the Ninja making their debut on Mac and Linux. Along with those, you'll get FTL: Faster Than Light, Trine 2 and Brutal Legend, plus the beta version of Eets Munchies, which is making its debut on all three platforms. As usual, you can pay whatever you like for the bundle and choose how much goes to the developers and charities (EFF, Child's Play and Watsi), but you'll have to pay more than the average to get Fez and FTL. Those not up on their indie gaming can get a taste of what's in store in the video after the break -- just don't get your hopes up for a Fez sequel if you like what you find.
