Many Flip fans are already sporting black arm bands with little red spots in honor of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/cisco-killing-flip-line-of-camcorders-shakes-fist-at-hd-recordi/">dying brand</a>, and the <em>New York Times</em> reports there's more bad news coming. Starting May 12th, all videos uploaded to FlipShare will expire 30 days after they've been posted. This applies to videos you've already uploaded as well --- so you've got till June 11th to follow the lead of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/21/google-shutting-down-most-of-google-video-urges-you-to-back-up/">Google Video users</a> and back up your collection of clips before they disappear into the digital ether. The FlipShare service will continue to live on for another two and a half years, if you don't mind the one month limit, but clearly Cisco wants users to move on with their video-sharing lives. Check out the more coverage link for instructions on how to export your videos, and let's have one more moment of silence for the tiny camcorder that could... at least until it <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/14/flip-slide-hd-review/">couldn't</a>.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/13/cisco-phasing-out-flipshare-30-days-to-save-your-videos/">Cisco phasing out FlipShare: 30 days to save your videos</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 13 May 2011 03:49:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/17/switched-on-flip-flops/">Last week's Switched On</a> discussed some of the challenges the Flip camcorder faced trying to grow in the marketplace, an effort <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/cisco-killing-flip-line-of-camcorders-shakes-fist-at-hd-recordi/">abruptly scuttled</a> by an indifferent Cisco. But while Kodak, Sony and others are now poised to fill the Flip void, no competitor exactly matched Flip's combination of simplicity and sharing. With point and shoot cameras, camcorders, traditional MP3 players and standalone GPS units in decline, the jury remains out on how long portable electronics can fight the smartphone, but Flip's success taught the industry some valuable lessons that may have relevance going forward.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/24/switched-on-a-legacy-from-the-flip-side/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Switched On: A legacy from the Flip side</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/24/switched-on-a-legacy-from-the-flip-side/">Switched On: A legacy from the Flip side</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 24 Apr 2011 20:15:00 EST. This week's announcement that Cisco is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/cisco-killing-flip-line-of-camcorders-shakes-fist-at-hd-recordi/">shuttering its Flip Video business</a> was but the latest twist in the history of the market share-leading device. The Flip got its start after its creator, Pure Digital, modified its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/07/24/pure-digitals-new-disposable-digicams-unlocked/">original disposable camcorder</a> to be reusable after hackers showed it could be done. And its success continued to defy convention that the product would resonate against a slew of digital cameras and increasingly competent smartphones that could shoot competitive -- and even high definition -- video.<br />
<br />
The Flip also soared above the market share of companies with far stronger brands such as Sony and Kodak, although the latter made gains on a string of hits, including the 1080p-shooting <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/zi8">Zi8</a> and waterproof <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/playsport">PlaySport</a>. It even fought back an initial foray from Apple's iPod nano and was still holding its own after the debut of the latest iPod touch, which took the HD video capture feature from the iPhone and made it available without a contract. Yes, the Flip hung tough. That's why its cancellation says volumes about Cisco, the company <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/19/cisco-acquiring-flip-video-maker-pure-digital-for-590-million-i/">that acquired it</a> for some $590 million in stock.<br />
<br />
Cisco needed to show growth with a consumer product line that could not be easily augmented with acquisitions and that derived little connection with the mother brand -- even less than Linksys, the company's networking line. Cisco certainly tried. But the Flip group made a few false moves that stuck out like a pop-out USB connector, and with little of that spring-loaded joy.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/17/switched-on-flip-flops/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Switched On: Flip-flops</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/17/switched-on-flip-flops/">Switched On: Flip-flops</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 17 Apr 2011 20:15:00 EST. So Flip Video's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/14/flip-slide-hd-review/">last offering</a> wasn't terribly amazing, but we had faith that the USB pocket camcorder would get back to its simplistic roots -- you know, until <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/cisco-killing-flip-line-of-camcorders-shakes-fist-at-hd-recordi/">Cisco axed the whole division</a>, along with 550 souls. Well, the truth is that the company was indeed working on something rather cool, and though we'd only heard whispers until now, the <em>New York Times</em>' David Pogue says the day after Cisco brought down the guillotine is when the FlipLive was due to hit shelves. It would have been a livestreaming camera, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/28/flip-mino-hd-with-802-11n-wifi-hits-the-fcc/">connected with WiFi</a> to the cloud, allowing users to share johnny-on-the-spot videos with the entire world in real time. Instead, the camera and its little red button are off to that great big server in the sky.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/14/ciscos-axing-of-flip-had-an-additional-casualty-the-unnannounc/">Cisco's axing of Flip had an additional casualty: the unannounced FlipLive streaming camera</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 14 Apr 2011 23:28:00 EST. Oh <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/flip,camcorder">Flip</a>, how far you've come. And, of course, how far you've fallen. Once a spunky upstart with oddly shaped camcorders, you got <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/19/cisco-acquiring-flip-video-maker-pure-digital-for-590-million-i/">snapped up</a> by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cisco">Cisco</a> in Spring of 2009 for a hefty $590 million in stock. Now, according to <em>Pocket-lint,</em> you (and your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/29/flip-offers-moustachiod-cameras-for-movember/">moustaches</a>) are done for. Cisco CEO John Chambers says the brand is being dispatched as the company refocuses, done in by the proliferation of high-definition sensors into <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/htc-sensation-4g-official-1-2ghz-dual-core-qhd-display-and-th/">smartphones</a> and PMPs and the like. We <em>had</em> been waiting for the company's next products (if you'll recall, a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/28/flip-mino-hd-with-802-11n-wifi-hits-the-fcc/">WiFi-enabled Mino HD</a> hit the FCC just a few months back), but at this point, it looks like those hopes and dreams will remain unfulfilled. We're awaiting comment from the company, and will update as it flies in.<br />
<br />
<strong>Update</strong>: Looks like the "<a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703385404576258652815753320.html?mod=rss_whats_news_technology">exit of some consumer operations</a>" will lead to 550 employees being left out of work. If you'll recall, the outfit reported in February that sales of consumer products sank 15 percent, while profits slipped 18 percent as margins slid for a fourth consecutive quarter. Meanwhile, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/08/cisco-umi-hands-on/">Umi</a> will be integrated into the company's TelePresence product line and operate through an enterprise and service provider go-to-market model. In other words, Skype just ate Umi's lunch.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/cisco-killing-flip-line-of-camcorders-shakes-fist-at-hd-recordi/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Cisco killing Flip line of camcorders, axing 550 employees in restructuring effort</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/12/cisco-killing-flip-line-of-camcorders-shakes-fist-at-hd-recordi/">Cisco killing Flip line of camcorders, axing 550 employees in restructuring effort</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 12 Apr 2011 09:32:00 EST. We'd been hearing rumors that a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/18/next-generation-flip-video-camcorder-rumored-to-boast-wifi/">next-gen Flip camera with WiFi</a> would hit sometime in the first half of the year, and what's this? A new Flip video camera with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz 802.11n WiFi just popped up in the FCC database. Based on the shape of the FCC label, the location of the HDMI port, and the M3260 model number, it definitely looks like a member of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/minohd">Mino</a> family, but that's really all we know -- although if we had to bet, the 5GHz support is there so it can beam movies to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/12/15/flipshare-tv-review/">FlipShare TV</a>. We'll see, we'll see.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/28/flip-mino-hd-with-802-11n-wifi-hits-the-fcc/">Flip Mino HD with 802.11n WiFi hits the FCC</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 28 Jan 2011 15:30:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;">Sure, different color options and various designer patterns are all well and good, but what gadgets really need more of is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/10/these-are-the-macbook-moustaches-youve-been-looking-for/">moustaches</a>. Thankfully, Flip has now stepped in to fill that void with no less than eleven different moustache designs for the month of Movember. Available on the Flip <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ultrahd">UltraHD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/minohd">MinoHD</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/slidehd">SlideHD</a> (and in various capacities), the moustachio'd offerings include handsome options like The Professor and The Auteur (pictured above) and, best of all, Flip will donate $10 from each purchase to the Movember Foundation, which raises funds and awareness for men's health. Hit up the source link below to check out all the options available, and to place your order if you find one that suits your style.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/29/flip-offers-moustachiod-cameras-for-movember/">Flip offers moustachio'd cameras for Movember</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 29 Oct 2010 19:44:00 EST. Tony Bates, who was seen as a major player within <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cisco/">Cisco</a> reporting directly to CEO John Chambers, has just left to take over the CEO role at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Skype/">Skype</a>. Cisco's own blog affirmed that Bates was leaving "to pursue another opportunity," and <i>The New York Times</i> has it that Joshua Silverman is stepping aside to make room for Mr. Bates. He'll arrive just in time to make a serious push for an IPO, grab more profit from its blossoming user base (which largely doesn't pay anything to make Skype-to-Skype calls) and possibly "make a deeper push into carrier and enterprise markets," as <i>GigaOM</i> puts it. Frankly, we'd be interested in seeing if any leftover synergies (yeah, we said it) could lead to a Skype-enabled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FlipVideo/">Flip Video</a> camcorder. Bates would obviously have <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/01/cisco-suggests-wifi-flip-video-camera-by-christmas-wants-to-int/">great contacts</a> with Cisco in order to make it happen, and honestly, it'd be a win-win for both parties. Crazier <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/27/freescale-partners-with-savannah-school-for-some-leg-stretching/">things</a> have happened, right?<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/04/skype-lands-ciscos-tony-bates-as-new-ceo/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Skype lands Cisco's Tony Bates as new CEO</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/04/skype-lands-ciscos-tony-bates-as-new-ceo/">Skype lands Cisco's Tony Bates as new CEO</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 04 Oct 2010 15:24:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Joby/">Joby</a> has pretty much set the standard for portable, flexible, curious looking tripods, and while it has evolved over the years to include <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/18/joby-gorillapod-focus-and-ballhead-x-review/">support for bulky DSLRs</a>, it hasn't really made the same strides to cover the burgeoning <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pocketcamcorder/">pocket camcorder</a> realm. Until today. Here in K&ouml;ln, the outfit used <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Photokina/">Photokina</a> as a launching pad for their newest portable tripod, the Gorillapod Video. For all intents and purposes, this is a classic Gorillapod with an omni-directional positioning video head, an extension arm for pans and tilts and magnetic feet for connecting it to your nearby barn. There's a small button on the head that allows the swivel arm to collapse for even easier travel, and during our moments with it here on the show floor, we were duly impressed with how it held the pocket camcorder strapped on top of it. It's available to order right now for $29.95, with shipments expected within the next fortnight. You know the drill -- gallery's below if you're craving more. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/">Joby Gorillapod Video hands-on at Photokina 2010</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/#3393829"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/joby-gorillapod-video-photokina1582_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/#3393828"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/joby-gorillapod-video-photokina1583_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/#3393827"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/joby-gorillapod-video-photokina1585_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/#3393826"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/joby-gorillapod-video-photokina1586_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-hands-on-at-photokina-2010/#3393825"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/joby-gorillapod-video-photokina1587_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-press-shots/">Joby Gorillapod Video press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-press-shots/#3393836"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/gp10armback_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-press-shots/#3393835"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/gp10armback2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-press-shots/#3393834"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/gp10flip_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-press-shots/#3393833"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/gp10kodak_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/joby-gorillapod-video-press-shots/#3393832"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/gp10sony_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/23/jobys-gorillapod-video-breaks-cover-at-photokina-complete-with/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Joby's Gorillapod Video breaks cover at Photokina, complete with swivel arm</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/23/jobys-gorillapod-video-breaks-cover-at-photokina-complete-with/">Joby's Gorillapod Video breaks cover at Photokina, complete with swivel arm</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 07:45:00 EST. With <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hd+camcorder/">pocket HD camcorders</a> multiplying by the dozens (most with 1080p functionality), we were starting to think <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/flip/page/2/">Flip</a>, er <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cisco,flip">Cisco </a>had fallen asleep at the wheel (or <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/14/flip-slide-hd-review/">the Slide!</a>), but the category pioneer has <em>finally</em> gone and updated its core Flip MinoHD and UltraHD lines with some much-needed features. Starting on the lower end, the 4GB Flip UltraHD is now just $149 --it'll capture one hour of 720p video at 30fps. That's a great price, but it's certainly the least interesting of the bunch -- the more notable additions are baked into the $199.99 8GB UltraHD, which is 20 percent slimmer with a new rubber casing and finally (finally!) gained image stabilization. Flip's still not playing the raw specs game, though -- the 8GB Ultra shoots 720p/60 video, which Cisco says maximizes video quality while keeping file sizes easier to share. Sure -- we don't think a 1080p/30 mode would have overly complicated things, but Flip's all about one-button simplicity, after all.<br />
<br />
The 8GB Ultra also sports a new FlipPort expansion port, which is the centerpiece of the "Designed for Flip" accessory program. All kinds of things can plug into the FlipPort; highlights of the launch lineup include a Scoshe wireless microphone, an iGo pico projector, and a SeaGate portable hard drive / storage extender. Cisco tells us the FlipPort will hit the other Flip models over time, and that it's expecting tons of Designed for Flip accessories -- beyond those for the new FlipPort, there will be a Bower magnetic wide angle lens and loads of new cases. It's an interesting sort of complexity to offer on a camera otherwise almost aggressive in its simplicity. <br />
<br />
The MinoHD line also nabs the new image stabilizer and 720p/60 video mode -- the new silver 4GB MinoHD will retail for $179.99, while the matte black 8GB MinoHD will run $229.99. All the new models can be ordered on Flip's website today, and if personalization if your thing, each can be customized with different designs or an uploaded picture of your own. We can't say there's a lack of new stuff, and while we're still a bit confused by the absence of 1080p recording and a still shot mode, there's something to be said for the company's studious focus on simplicity. Whether 720p/60 video can hold up to the competition's 1080p is still a giant question mark, but we just got our review models and we'll let you know how things go later this week. Until then, enjoy some of the beauty shots below as well as the full press release after the break. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-hands-on/">Flip UltraHD and MinoHD hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-hands-on/#3379110"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/flipultrahdminohd1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-hands-on/#3379111"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/flipultrahdminohd2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-hands-on/#3379112"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/flipultrahdminohd3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-hands-on/#3379113"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/flipultrahdminohd4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-hands-on/#3379114"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/flipultrahdminohd5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-press-shots/">Flip UltraHD and MinoHD press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-press-shots/#3379097"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/minohd-1-hr-back_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-press-shots/#3379098"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/minohd-1-hr-silver-usb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-press-shots/#3379099"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/minohd-1hr-silver-front_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-press-shots/#3379100"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/minohd-2hr-black-back_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-ultrahd-and-minohd-press-shots/#3379101"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/09/minohd-2hr-black-front-usb_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/20/flip-updates-ultrahd-and-minohd-rolls-out-new-designed-for-flip/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flip updates UltraHD and MinoHD, rolls out new Designed for Flip accessories</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/09/20/flip-updates-ultrahd-and-minohd-rolls-out-new-designed-for-flip/">Flip updates UltraHD and MinoHD, rolls out new Designed for Flip accessories</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 20 Sep 2010 00:01:00 EST. It sure took 'em long enough, but <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Colorware/">Colorware</a> has finally added the Flip Ultra pocket camcorder to its assortment of wares available to be doused in a rainbow's worth of hues. It's a fitting addition, of course, and those who'd prefer the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/30/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/">HD version</a> will be treated in the near future. For now, it'll cost you a Ulysses S. Grant (or more) to colorize your existing Flip Ultra, or $210+ to snag a minty fresh unit direct from Colorware. Best of all, you'll be able to paint the top, ring, bottom, back, cursor and button a different shade if you've got the cash, so hit that source link (or hop on past the break) if you're imagination is already whirring. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/colorware-flip-ultra-camcorder/">Colorware Flip Ultra camcorder</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/colorware-flip-ultra-camcorder/#3244192"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/colorware-flip-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/colorware-flip-ultra-camcorder/#3244193"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/08/colorware-flip-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/09/colorware-finally-points-the-rainbow-gun-at-flip-ultra-ultrahd/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Colorware finally points the rainbow gun at Flip Ultra, UltraHD up next</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/08/09/colorware-finally-points-the-rainbow-gun-at-flip-ultra-ultrahd/">Colorware finally points the rainbow gun at Flip Ultra, UltraHD up next</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 09 Aug 2010 03:29:00 EST. In an interview with Marthin De Beer, Senior VP of Cisco's Emerging Technologies Group, De Beer strongly hints at a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/11/18/next-generation-flip-video-camcorder-rumored-to-boast-wifi/">WiFi enabled Flip Video camera</a> by the end of 2010. While he didn't say it in so many words, he did say, "We didn't buy Flip to have it be only a video recorder," adding, "I look forward to Christmas," when asked about a possible timeline. That seems clear enough. <br />
<br />
The conversation then gets muddied when De Beer begins discussing video as a "pervasive play" for Cisco, something that will "ultimately span across everything we do." And in a bid to interoperate with all devices, including Apple's new handset and certainly future iOS devices, De Beer said, "We would absolutely love to <a href="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/apple-wwdc-2010-384-rm-eng.jpg">integrate with FaceTime</a>." When, is the question left unanswered. Until then Cisco plans to introduce a mobile Movi iPhone app to the App Store that ties back into Cisco's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/17/tandberg-e20-desktop-videoconferencing-phone-says-me-too/">Tandberg</a> SIP-based video conferencing solution. Now, maybe it's a stretch, but with Cisco slowly creeping into the consumer space, it's hard not to take away a sense that it will be introducing software and devices interoperable with its Silicon Valley neighbor's FaceTime solution in the not too distant future. Hit the source to read the interview in full.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/01/cisco-suggests-wifi-flip-video-camera-by-christmas-wants-to-int/">Cisco suggests WiFi Flip Video camera by Christmas, wants to integrate products with Apple's FaceTime</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 01 Jul 2010 05:36:00 EST. The details are slim to none on this one, but we're all about a good pocket cam rumor. According to the usually-reliable <em>Business Insider </em>Cisco will launch a new set of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/flip/">Flip</a> camcorders around the NAB show which runs from April 12-15, but we don't have any specs yet. Come on Cisco, now you've got us guessing not only about the<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/09/cisco-promises-the-next-generation-internet-delivers-markedly/"> future of the Internet</a>, but also if your newest Flip will support 1080p. Told you we didn't know much, but we'll obviously be keeping an eye out for more. <strong><br />

Do you love funky proprietary software enough to force your loved ones to run it too? That's the question Cisco seems to be asking with the FlipShare TV, a new set-top box designed to help make sharing Flip videos super-simple for even the most basic user. Unfortunately, some puzzling design choices and big limitations combined with the less-than-wonderful FlipShare software make this seem like more of a hassle than it's worth. What do we mean? Read on for the full review.<br />

It's just the natural evolution of things. Sony already upended the pocket camcorder market by <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/02/sony-hdr-tg5-makes-worlds-smallest-full-hd-camcorder-lighter-a/">adding GPS</a> to one of its models, and now with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/19/cisco-acquiring-flip-video-maker-pure-digital-for-590-million-i/">Cisco at the helm</a> (who, by the way, is a networking giant), it looks as if Flip Video's next product will sport an internal WiFi module. Granted, we were already assuming as much after <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/07/pure-digital-founder-talks-of-flip-videos-future/">listening</a> to Pure Digital's founder speak of the device's future post-acquisition, but word on the street has it that a new Flip with WiFi will land sometime in 1H 2010. Furthermore, a Cisco spokesperson has been quoted over at <i>Pocket-lint</i> as saying that a new edition will feature "a large screen that slides to reveal the record and menu buttons underneath." We're guessing that we'll hear more about this mythical product as CES draws near, but that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/14/flip-minohd-goes-premium-we-go-hands-on/">MinoHD</a> you were about to buy? <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/02/flip-video-remote-control-shows-up-at-fcc-bigger-things-to-co/">Flip Video remote</a>, meet your family. One of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cisco/">Cisco</a>'s latest FCC filings happened to keep its user manual outside the seal of confidentiality, giving us a pretty good look at FlipShareTV, a setup for streaming recorded video from the computer's FlipShare software, out the USB dongle transmitted wirelessly to the receiver connected to the TV... and that's about it. Nothing too thrilling here, and there's no indication of price or release date. More pictures below -- any Flip enthusiasts actually excited by this?<br />

Flip Video just launched a new "premium" take on the <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/minohd">MinoHD</a> -- it's fundamentally the same as the existing MinoHD, but with 8GB of storage, a bigger two-inch screen and an HDMI port, all wrapped up in either a sleek aluminum shell or a personalized design from the Flip website. The 8GB of flash means the MinoHD can now record up to two hours of 720p video, and while there's still no image stabilizer, it's not like that's stopped anyone from loving the MinoHD before. There's also a new version of the FlipShare software, which features an automatic Magic Movie mode that'll trim and edit before shooting your video to Facebook, YouTube and MySpace. We're sure the kids will love it, but we'd rather do things the old-fashioned way. The new premium model will sell for $229, while the original MinoHD remains on sale for $199 and the old-school Mino hangs back at $149. After some time playing around with one, we'd say you're well-justified in dropping the extra $30 here -- the newer case and screen are quite nice, and HDMI-out is nothing to sneeze at. It's still the same MinoHD as far as image quality goes, however, so don't walk into this one expecting any surprises -- and no fancy al-yoo-min-ium case will quell the need for a proper stabilizer in these things. Video after the break!<br />

A brand spanking new filing with the FCC shows a Flip Video-branded RF remote control, produced by Foxconn, which frankly raises more questions than it answers. Looking at its robust size, which is comparable to that of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/30/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/">Flip Ultra Video HD</a>, we can be pretty sure this isn't meant to remotely control anything that's out at the moment. Head honcho Jonathan Kaplan has already <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/07/pure-digital-founder-talks-of-flip-videos-future/">expressed a definite interest</a> in expanding the brand, and Cisco's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/19/cisco-acquiring-flip-video-maker-pure-digital-for-590-million-i/">acquisition of Pure Digital</a> was said to be "key" to its strategy of expanding its presence in the "media-enabled home." So, given the parent company's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/26/cisco-media-hub-reviewed-hated/">somewhat unsuccessful</a> history of building <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/07/linksys-wireless-home-audio-and-media-hub-nas-hands-on/">media hubs</a>, and the simplified control scheme that just screams for an <span style="font-style: italic;">on-screen</span> menu, this may well be the prelude to a new Flip-branded whole-home DVR setup, an idea that Cisco <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/19/directv-cisco-and-samsung-have-whole-house-dvr-plans-with-rvu-a/">discussed over the summer</a>. Or it could be something entirely different -- we just know it's <span style="font-style: italic;">something</span>. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Apple/">Apple</a> sure took long enough to get to this, but just <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/04/hama-cases-foreshadow-5g-ipod-nano-3g-ipod-touch-at-ifa-hands/">as rumored</a>, the iPod nano is seeing a hotly-anticipated refresh today. The big addition? A camera that just so happens to shoot live video (but not stills, apparently). On the lower left of the new fifth-generation nano, you'll find the camera as well as a speaker and microphone, but unfortunately you'll have to sync it with your computer before you upload clips to YouTube. The camera-laden nanos will be available starting today in a rainbow's worth of hues (nine, if we're being precise), with the 8GB model pegged at $149 and the 16GB edition at $179 -- though, we should mention that yellow and red are Apple Store exclusives. Oh, and oddly / tragically enough, the iPod nano is officially the <em>only </em>dedicated iPod with a camera, leaving the iPod touch -- and every human on the planet -- scratching their head in befuddlement. Meanwhile, iPhone 3G users are equally bewildered by the fact that a mid-range iPod can shoot video while a fully-capable smartphone cannot.<br /><br />As for other specs, you'll find a built-in FM tuner with Live Pause (!) and iTunes Tagging, a pedometer (you know, for that fancy <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/nike">Nike+ integration</a>), <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/VoiceOver/">VoiceOver</a>, support for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/18/video-iphone-os-3-0-walkthrough/">voice memos</a> and a larger 2.2-inch display (up from 2.0-inches) with a 376 x 240 resolution. As for the camera, we're told that the video capture mode snags footage in VGA quality (640 x 480) H.264, with up to 30fps and AAC audio. If you're feeling fancy, there's also 15 real-time special effects including Sepia, Black and White, X-Ray, Film Grain, Thermal, Security Cam, Cyborg, Bulge, Kaleido and Motion Blur (among others). As for dimensions, the 5G nano remains identical to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/09/official-ipod-nano-reaches-4g-looks-tall-for-its-age/">4G nano</a> at 3.6- x 1.5- x 0.24-inches, though it somehow shaves a whopping 0.02 ounces as it climbs down from 1.3 to 1.28 ounces. Curious about battery life? Apple claims that the new nano can last up to 24 hours when playing back audio (same as 4G nano), while video playback should zap the rechargeable battery in just five hours (which is up an hour over its predecessor).<br /><br /><strong>Update</strong>: Check out our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/ipod-nano-5g-with-camera-first-hands-on/">first hands-on live from the event</a>!<br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5g-apple-ipod-nano-with-video-camera-press-shots/">5G Apple iPod nano with video camera press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5g-apple-ipod-nano-with-video-camera-press-shots/#2269799"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/ipod-nano-5g-press_34_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5g-apple-ipod-nano-with-video-camera-press-shots/#2269798"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/ipod-nano-5g-press_33_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5g-apple-ipod-nano-with-video-camera-press-shots/#2269797"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/ipod-nano-5g-press_32_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5g-apple-ipod-nano-with-video-camera-press-shots/#2269796"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/ipod-nano-5g-press_35_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5g-apple-ipod-nano-with-video-camera-press-shots/#2269795"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/ipod-nano-5g-press_36_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><br /><div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipod-nano-gets-a-video-camera-fm-tuner-more/">iPod nano gets a video camera, larger display, FM tuner, more</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipod-nano-gets-a-video-camera-fm-tuner-more/#2269330"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/apple-ipod-sept-09-1379-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipod-nano-gets-a-video-camera-fm-tuner-more/#2269329"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/apple-ipod-sept-09-1377-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipod-nano-gets-a-video-camera-fm-tuner-more/#2269328"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/apple-ipod-sept-09-1376-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipod-nano-gets-a-video-camera-fm-tuner-more/#2269327"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/apple-ipod-sept-09-1375-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ipod-nano-gets-a-video-camera-fm-tuner-more/#2269324"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/09/apple-ipod-sept-09-1386-rm-eng_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/09/apple-slaps-video-camera-into-new-ipod-nano/">Apple adds video camera, larger screen to new 5G iPod nano</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 09 Sep 2009 12:51:00 EST. This week's <a href="http://ask.engadget.com/">Ask Engadget</a> question is coming to us from Lulu, who can't seem to select a camcorder worthy of being carried around in her <a target="_blank" href="http://i.ehow.com/images/GlobalPhoto/Articles/5053904/HowToWearPocketWatches4Crosswised_Full.jpg">Fifth Pocket[TM]</a>.<br /> <blockquote><em>"I need help! I want a small pocket camcorder but I'm not sure which one to get. I don't want to fall into the hype of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FlipVideo/">Flip</a> because I worry two hours won't be enough. What should I be looking for when considering a small camcorder and where can I get a good quality one with expandable memory? Thanks!"</em><br /> </blockquote>The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/pocket+camcorder/">pocket camcorder</a> arena has blossomed into something of a small giant here recently, with entries from <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/02/sony-hdr-tg5-makes-worlds-smallest-full-hd-camcorder-lighter-a/">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/14/samsung-hmx-u10-full-hd-camcorder-with-1-button-youtube-uploads/">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/04/kodak-zi8-impressions-surprising-functionality-but-its-still/">Kodak</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/08/creatives-vado-hd-720p-pocket-camcorder-now-on-sale-for-199-99/">Creative</a> flowing in to compete with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/30/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/">Ultra HD</a>. For those of you who've laid down the cheddar, why not share your experiences here in order to direct Lulu to making the right choice? Surely you won't pass on an opportunity to help a fellow nerd. <em>Surely.</em><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/ask/" rel="tag">Ask Engadget</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/13/ask-engadget-best-pocket-sized-camcorder-out-there/">Ask Engadget: Best pocket-sized camcorder out there?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 13 Aug 2009 21:29:00 EST. We've been messing around with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/zi8">Kodak's latest pocket camcorder, the Zi8</a>, and find the shooter to be an interesting hybrid. With a flip-out USB plug, HDMI out and an easily accessible SD card slot, this is clearly a "premium" mix of features for the class, but the $180 pricetag keeps the device firmly grounded in Walmart-friendly reality. Other odd perks like a line-in jack and 1080p have us scratching our heads -- but in a good way. Overall, we'd feel pretty comfortable saying the footage is about the best you can obtain at this pricepoint. Colors are great, the image stabilization isn't a gimmick (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/30/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/">sorry, Flip</a>), and if you squint hard enough you can almost believe the 1080p is 1080p. Still, the camera is hampered by its cheap approach to processing and compressing the footage it's taking in -- despite its limitations, we'd say the iPhone 3GS is besting most cheap pocket camcorders on this front, motion just looks much more fluid. But don't take our word for it, check out a couple of video samples after the break.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/">Kodak's 1080p Zi8 HD pocket camcorder in hand</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/#2174054"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/zi8-hands-001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/#2174058"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/zi8-hands-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/#2174062"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/zi8-hands-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/#2174061"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/zi8-hands-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/#2174057"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/zi8-hands-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/04/kodak-zi8-impressions-surprising-functionality-but-its-still/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Kodak Zi8 impressions: surprising functionality, but it's still a pocket camcorder</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/04/kodak-zi8-impressions-surprising-functionality-but-its-still/">Kodak Zi8 impressions: surprising functionality, but it's still a pocket camcorder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 04 Aug 2009 16:08:00 EST. Yeah, you don't really need 1080p in a compact like this. You know it, we know it. Kodak probably knows it too. Still, it's always pretty wild to pick up a little piece like this and know it can shoot to a native resolution that our parents can't even pronounce. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/29/kodaks-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-hits-the-1080p-mark-adds-facebo/">The new Zi8</a> is certainly bulky for a "pocket" camcorder, but makes up for it by sporting a rechargeable battery, line-in audio jack, HDMI out, 2.5-inch LCD and even keeping the pop-out USB plug around for old times sake. The perks of face recognition for improved exposure and gyroscope-based image stabilization are also pretty snazzy at this $180 pricepoint. We still aren't quite sold on the way this camera (like most of these compacts) processes video -- it seems to do a lot of damage to frame-to-frame motion, something that Apple fought off <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/iphone-3g-s-review/">pretty well with the iPhone 3GS</a> -- but we're going to take one home and test it out a little before we throw down a verdict.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/">Kodak's 1080p Zi8 HD pocket camcorder in hand</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/#2174054"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/zi8-hands-001_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/#2174058"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/zi8-hands-002_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/#2174062"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/zi8-hands-003_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/#2174061"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/zi8-hands-004_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/#2174057"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/07/zi8-hands-005_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/29/kodaks-1080p-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-in-hand/">Kodak's 1080p Zi8 HD pocket camcorder in hand</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 15:24:00 EST. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Zi6/">Zi6</a> is still fairly fresh in our memory banks, but Kodak's already looking ahead with its newly unveiled Zi8 pocket camcorder. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FlipUltraHD/">Flip Ultra HD</a> competitor boasts 1080p recording this time around, in addition to usual features like face tracking, image stabilization, a 2.5-inch LCD display, and SD card slot. YouTube uploading is back, and joining it Facebook support, too. It'll be out in September in blue, red, and black colors for just a hair under $180.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/07/29/kodaks-zi8-hd-pocket-camcorder-hits-the-1080p-mark-adds-facebo/">Kodak's Zi8 HD pocket camcorder hits the 1080p mark, adds Facebook uploading</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 29 Jul 2009 01:10:00 EST. What better way to give you a look at Flip Video's new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/UltraHD/">Ultra HD</a> camcorder than by reviewing it on video... <em>shot with the Ultra HD</em>. The specs are simple: 720p / 30 FPS, 8GB of storage on-board, HDMI out, and pretty much nothing else. Still, a camera this cheap ($199.99) and this small definitely has its uses. Of course, you'll probably be distracted (like we were) by the bad, bad image stabilization issues. But don't just read about it -- take a look at the gallery below to scope out what the thing looks like, then watch the videos after the break to hear (and see) our thoughts, and catch the cam in some heavier -- shakier -- action. Needless to say, both videos are available in HD.<br /> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/">Flip Video Ultra HD video review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/#1527018"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/ultrahd_eng11_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/#1527006"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/ultrahd_eng16_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/#1527019"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/ultrahd_eng10_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/#1527023"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/ultrahd_eng20_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/#1527002"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2009/04/ultrahd_eng17_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/30/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Flip Video Ultra HD video review</em></a></p><p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/30/flip-video-ultra-hd-video-review/">Flip Video Ultra HD video review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 30 Apr 2009 00:00:00 EST. When we got wind of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/19/cisco-acquiring-flip-video-maker-pure-digital-for-590-million-i/">Cisco's $590 million acquisition</a> of Flip Video-maker Pure Digital, we immediately came to grips with the fit. After all, Cisco's been dying to pull another <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2009/01/07/linksys-by-cisco-wireless-home-audio-system-unveiled/">Linksys</a> for some time now, and what better to expand its consumer electronics presence than with a cheap-o camcorder that's ripe for the addition of WiFi. Bigwig (and Pure Digital founder) Jonathan Kaplan recently sat down to talk about the product's future, and unsurprisingly, he definitely mentions the integration of Cisco's "strengths" into the handheld camcorder. Furthermore, he's hoping that an entity as large as Cisco can get the Flip Video line overseas, and he's also quite big on "building the brand." The takeaway? Don't be alarmed when a WiFi-equipped, streaming-capable successor hits the scene at CES 2010, complete with automatic upload-to-YouTube functionality.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/07/pure-digital-founder-talks-of-flip-videos-future/">Pure Digital founder talks of Flip Video's future</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 07 Apr 2009 05:27:00 EST. Funny -- that patently absurd <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/09/cisco-said-to-be-buying-pure-digital-for-around-500-million/">half a billion figure</a> we heard tossed about earlier this month was low. In reality, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Cisco/">Cisco</a> has just announced its full intentions to acquire all of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PureDigital/">Pure Digital</a>, the maker of the immensely popular <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FlipVideo/">Flip Video</a> camcorder, for around $590 million in stock. According to Ned Hooper, senior vice president of Cisco's Corporate Development and Consumer Groups, the "acquisition of Pure Digital is key to Cisco's strategy to expand our momentum in the media-enabled home and to capture the consumer market transition to visual networking." To an outsider, the move may seem somewhat odd; after all, what's Cisco doing spending this much on a consumer product? Let's just say that uploading HD video requires loads of bandwidth, and Cisco's all about that. Expect the deal to close in Cisco's fiscal fourth quarter of 2009.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/19/cisco-acquiring-flip-video-maker-pure-digital-for-590-million-i/">Cisco acquiring Flip Video-maker Pure Digital for $590 million in stock</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 19 Mar 2009 08:59:00 EST. Believe us people, popularity pays off. Just ask <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PureDigital/">Pure Digital</a> CEO Jonathan Kaplan, who is reportedly scrambling for ways to spend $80 million of the $500 million <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/cisco/">Cisco Systems</a> is about to hand over in order to acquire the company. Granted, none of this has been confirmed just yet, but <em>TechCrunch</em> has it that the deal is all but done. Reportedly, Cisco's interested in bringing the firm into its portfolio in order to further push high-bandwidth using services. Obviously, user generated HD video fits pretty perfectly into that agenda. We suspect we'll be hearing more on the subject as the work week begins in earnest, but it sure sounds like <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/27/cisco-axes-linksys-branding/">Linksys</a> is about to get a new cousin.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/09/cisco-said-to-be-buying-pure-digital-for-around-500-million/">Cisco said to be buying Pure Digital for around $500 million</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 09 Mar 2009 00:39:00 EST. Pure Digital Technologies' Flip Video lineup is getting <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/hello%20kitty">Hello Kitty-fied</a> with the Mino and MinoHD. Like their not-as-adorable kin, the camcorders sport one-touch video recording, a built-in USB port, and are able to record 60 minutes of video with a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Most importantly -- and sure to tip the scales in Flip's favor over the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/11/creatives-vado-hd-720p-pocket-camcorder-reviewed-toe-to-toe-wi/ ">Vado HD 720p Pocket</a> -- the camcorders come in eleven <em>different </em>Hello Kitty designs. Far East Gizmos says the price will be $179.99 for Mino and $229.99 for MinoHD, which is the same price as the respective models without these adorable skins. Between this and last month's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/22/hello-kitty-c1-netbook-packs-a-lotta-tude-into-a-small-package/">C1 netbook</a>, we hope this is a sign of an uptick in lip-bitingly cute Hello Kitty-branded tech gear.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/12/15/hello-kitty-flip-mino-cant-stop-recording-self-in-mirror/">Hello Kitty Flip Mino can't stop recording self in mirror</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 15 Dec 2008 12:51:00 EST. First was the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/netbook/">netbook</a> craze -- suddenly, everyone was cool with a miniaturized laptop. Now, the same sentiment has apparently bled over to the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/camcorder/">camcorder</a> realm, with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/11/12/flip-mino-goes-h-to-the-d-with-a-wsj-review/">Mino HD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/09/30/kodaks-zi6-pocket-hd-camcorder-reviewed/">Zi6</a> and <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/VadoHD/">Vado HD</a> all vying for that precious space in your front left pocket. The latter, Creative's latest, was recently reviewed over at <em>CNET</em>, and while it'd be wonderful to find a clear cut winner, critics simply couldn't say that it was definitively superior in all ways to Flip's formidable rival. In short, the Vado HD's video quality was slightly less awesome than that of the Mino HD, but the feature set on the Creative was found to be far superior. For whatever reason, Pure Digital's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/03/pure-digital-introduces-flip-mino-video-sharing-camcorder/">Flip Mino</a> has been a runaway hit. The video quality <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/05/pure-digital-flip-mino-review-round-up/">ain't that great</a>, and it's downright bad in low-light scenarios, but there's something about the convenience factor that keeps folks coming. Now, there's one more reason to give this one a look over <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/10/kodaks-new-zi6-hd-pocket-video-camera-for-the-youtube-set/">rivals</a>: personalization. Thanks to a new partnership with CafePress, prospective buyers can customize their Flip Mino with a design of their own or choose one from thousands of professional designs, and contrary to what you're expecting, the service is completely free. In other words, you can finally get that pocket camcorder you've been wanting with your 2-week old girlfriend (or you skateboarding) plastered on there for not a dime more -- but who'll be laughing when it comes time to sell and upgrade?<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.switched.com/2008/10/14/flip-video-lets-users-create-custom-minos/">Switched</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/handhelds/" rel="tag">Handhelds</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/14/customize-your-flip-mino-for-free-regret-it-when-ebay-time-come/">Customize your Flip Mino for free, regret it when eBay time comes</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 14 Oct 2008 10:44:00 EST. Announced today, the Flip Mino checks in at just 4- x 2- x 0.6-inches and weighs 3.3-ounces -- a full 40% smaller than the previously mentioned Ultra. You'll also find 2GB of internal storage for holding an hour of footage, along with a sealed rechargeable Li-ion, 1.5-inch anti-glare screen, touch-sensitive buttons and a TV output to boot. As predicted, this pocket-friendly camcorder comes ready to upload to some of the most popular video sharing sites on the web, and users in the US can procure their own (in black or white) on June 5th for $179.99.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/03/pure-digital-introduces-flip-mino-video-sharing-camcorder/">Pure Digital introduces Flip Mino video sharing camcorder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 03 Jun 2008 22:22:00 EST. People sure do love them some <a href="http://engadget.com/tag/flipvideo">Flip Video</a> cameras, and it looks like the company is getting set to cash in on that popularity with a new model dubbed the Minos, which was recently spotted in a B&amp;H catalog with a due date of June 4. It's not clear what the Minos will offer over the existing Flip except a $179 price tag and your choice of a black or white casing, but here's hoping Flip handles all that fame responsibly -- no one want to see this guy go all Elvis and feature-bloated, you know?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/20/flip-minos-coming-on-june/">Flip Minos coming on June 4?</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 20 May 2008 18:55:00 EST. <div align="left">At under $200, Pure Digital's recently announced <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/12/pure-digital-reveals-youtube-friendly-flip-video-ultra-camcorder/">Flip Video camcorders</a> are already pretty inexpensive, but the company now looks to be trying to make them even cheaper for non-profit organizations -- as in free. That's the goal of the company's just announced Flip Video Spotlight program, which aims to give up to one million of the camcorders to non-profits and other non-governmental organizations over the next five years. Apparently, the initiative (which is set to get underway this December) will operate as a donor matching program, with donors (or the organizations themselves) able to purchase so-called Flip Video Spotlight Kits, which Flip Video will match one-to-one. Much like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/olpc">OLPC</a> program, Flip Video sees virtually no end to the benefits of its camcorders, with Pure Digital CEO Jonathan Kaplan saying the company believes "video can help change the world."</div>

Merely months after launching the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/01/pure-digital-revisits-point-and-shoot-cam-unveils-flip-video/">Flip Video</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/PureDigital/">Pure Digital</a> is hitting back with the sleeker, sexier Flip Video Ultra. The ultra-compact <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/camcorder/">camcorder</a> touts "on-board software to enable editing, organizing, and seamless video uploading to AOL, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/YouTube/">YouTube</a> and other video sharing sites," and even includes a video output for watching captures on TV. The device includes a flip-out USB port for connecting to your PC, is already available in white, pink, black and orange motifs for $149.99 (1GB) or $179.99 (2GB), and reportedly holds "60 minutes of full VGA-quality video" on the latter.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/12/pure-digital-reveals-youtube-friendly-flip-video-ultra-camcorder/">Pure Digital reveals YouTube-friendly Flip Video Ultra camcorder</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 12 Sep 2007 09:23:00 EST. When all else fails, repackage your device with some gimmicky new software and a new brand, then send it back into the field with a hyperbole-filled press release and see what sticks. That seems to be Pure Digital's plan here with the Flip Video, an exact replica of the drug store-friendly <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/02/pure-digitals-point-and-shoot-video-camera/">Point &amp; Shoot</a> cam, with a 30 minute version going for $120, and a 60 minute edition priced at $150. The main difference, other than that new Flip Video moniker, is some YouTube-friendly software that lets you edit and upload your videos to video sharing sites relatively pain-free. Of course, you can still do the photo lab thing and get your videos turned into a DVD, but Flip Video's video sharing thrust does seem to have a good eye for the current market, even if the actual tech is getting a little dated by now. The device should be available today.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/01/pure-digital-revisits-point-and-shoot-cam-unveils-flip-video/">Pure Digital revisits Point &amp; Shoot cam, unveils Flip Video</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 01 May 2007 12:55:00 EST.
