Developer Sports Interactive and publisher Sega have announced a release date for the Vita incarnation of Football Manager Classic 2014: April 11. The game, which is described as a "fully-featured handheld version of Football Manager Classic," brings a more streamlined approach to the simulation aspects of Football Manager. Instead of spending countless hours poring over every minute detail of your squad, Football Manager Classic instead boils down the fan-favorite simulation formula to its bare essentials. This allows players to work their way through a lengthy managerial career without dedicating months of their otherwise busy lives to sitting in front of a computer. This Vita incarnation of the game is the first mobile version of Football Manager Classic to utilize the same 3D Match Engine found in its PC counterpart. As a result, players are able to start a game on the PC, transfer save data to the Vita, then continue their career on the go. Sega has yet to establish a price point for the Vita version of Football Manager Classic 2014, but it does note that come April 11, the game will be available in both retail and digital incarnations. • British cops caught playing PSP on duty

First a Lancanshire bus driver is fired for playing a PSP while driving, now this. England's Sun newspaper is reporting on a pair of East London police officers caught playing a PSP while they were supposed to be guarding a wall in danger of collapsing. The cops were so engrossed in the game that they didn't even notice a passerby snapping a camera phone picture of their loafing (above). The Sun reports that the cops were playing a "footie" game (soccer to us normal people), which is a little disappointing to us. If they were playing Grand Theft Auto or something, at least they could argue they were researching the motivations behind the criminal element or something. Heck, even Lumines would have been beneficial for cops' spatial and quick thinking skills. If these cops want to play soccer, they should join a league. [Via Columbus Dispatch]

Alice spotted this snap of the geek's version of the World Cup from the Electronic Football Challenge '06. I'm sure many gamers are intrigued by the logic behind a football game that doesn't require much more effort than rapid wrist movements and lets players argue with the referee over irc. Also, check out the absent keeper from the nearest team: they must have replaced him with a firewall (sorry). If you're the type that prefers -- slightly more -- real football, then you might be pleased to know that Konami dropped us a line to say that they've signed (according to the press release) "one of the most dangerous strikers in soccer today", Adriano "lightning balls" Ribeiro, to be the figurehead of Winning Eleven: Pro Evolution Soccer 2007.
