Like the previous iterations, they were still made to be lightweight and portable with long battery life, though LG promises better performance and more efficiency by using newer components.

LG will showcase two new entries to its ultralight Gram lineup at CES 2019 -- one of them is a 17-inch laptop for those who prefer large screens, while the other is a 2-in-1 convertible. According to the sneak peek the tech giant has released, the 17-inch laptop will be powered by the "newest 8th Generation Intel Core processors." It will come equipped with a display that boasts a 2,560 x 1,600-pixel resolution and a 16:10 ratio, which LG says makes it ideal for image and video editing.

Ahead of CES, laptop makers are hurriedly unveiling the hardware they'll be showing off at the trade show. Yesterday we got the lowdown on Samsung's Surface-challenging Notebook 9 range, and now it's fellow Korean titan LG's turn to talk up its 2018 Gram line-up. As always, the company is emphasizing the portability of the lightweight ultrabooks, which hopefully won't come at the expense of a decent display this time round. The new batch includes a 13.3 inch model weighing in at 2.1 pounds, a 14 inch variant at 2.2 pounds, and a 15.6 version coming in at 2.4 pounds.

LG's ultralight Gram laptop has too many compromises

LG's Gram is a wonder to hold. It's one of the lightest 15.6-inch notebooks we've ever seen, at just 2.4 pounds. But that extreme portability has some tradeoffs, especially when it comes to build quality. To make things worse, it doesn't even live up to LG's lofty battery claims. That leaves the Gram in a weird spot. It could be useful if you're looking for the lightest 15.6-inch laptop possible, but for most consumers, it doesn't do too much to differentiate itself from other ultraportables.

One of the most exciting things we saw at CES 2017 was LG's 14-inch Gram laptop, particularly because of its lightweight design (2.3 pounds). Today, the company announced that the device is now available, along with the 13.3 and 15.6-inch versions. Regardless of which screen size you choose, they all feature Intel's 7th-generation Kaby Lake processors and 1080p IPS displays. The cheapest model costs $1,000 and comes with a Core i5 CPU, 8GB RAM and 256GB of built-in storage, but it does lack a touchscreen. You can also get the 14-inch with these specs for $200 more.

LG's big computing reveal for CES was a refreshed 14-inch "Gram" laptop. It's said to be the lightest in its class, weighing in at only 2.13 pounds (that's a sub-kilogram weigh-in). That, combined with the promise of between 21 and 24 hours of battery life, sounds like an incredible combination. Unfortunately, it may be too good to be true.

LG's laptops are a common sight around the world, but you wouldn't know it in the US when the company hasn't officially brought its portables to the country. Well, that's about to change: the Korean tech giant has announced that it will sell 13- and 14-inch versions of its ultralight Gram laptops in the US through both Amazon and Microsoft Stores. They're still running 5th-generation Core processors, but they're otherwise no slouches -- they earn their name through an extremely light 980g (2.16lbs) body that makes many smaller laptops seem portly by comparison. You'll also get a respectable 1080p display and perks like HDMI video output and a microSD card slot.

  • Open webOS-powered HDTVs said to be on the way from... LG?

If you were wondering what was next for webOS now that it's gone all open source on us, webOS Nation chimes in with word that Gram is working with LG to bring it to connected HDTVs. Several names from the HP / Gram team are dropped as being involved in the effort, which reportedly was under way even before HP revealed it would spin the project off as an independent. Of course, when we actually saw Open webOS 1.0 it was already stretching to fill the space of an HP TouchSmart computer screen (project architect Steve Winston specifically mentioned hotel kiosks as a possibility, a market LG is all over) so it makes sense that larger displays have been a target. With LG supposedly both looking to replace its existing NetCast smart TV platform and unhappy with Google TV based on its rate of adoption and Google's terms, engineers have been working to port the software to its dual-core L9 chipset. In the past LG has pursued voice and motion control, the aforementioned Google TV integration and even Plex support to make its smart TVs more appealing, and has founded the Smart TV Alliance for cross platform apps. We only have to wait until CES 2013 to see if webOS is next up to power its efforts, stay tuned.

HP's webOS team has been keeping busy with its open source project, but it's time for a new challenge in the form of Gram: a fresh HP-funded offshoot focused on "software, user experience, the cloud, engineering, and partnering." We're not quite sure where that list could lead, but webOS, Enyo and cloud services are all expected to play a role in future endeavors. Judging from the fancy flyer after the break, a lot of energy is going into brand-building right now, along with a dose of secrecy, but hopefully some more concrete details will happen along soon.

That shady character on the corner just sold you a plastic skull keychain with fiery orange eyes. He assured you it weighed 25 grams, but how do you know you're not being ripped off? Fortunately, Brando has come out with a USB optical mouse that has a built-in digital scale, designed, apparently, for this precise situation. Just lift up the cover, calibrate the reader and weigh away. Pencils, lint, small animals -- the list of measurable items is endless, as long as your goods don't exceed 500 grams. To get the good times rolling, hit the source link, where you can grab one for $22.

Ah yes, remember Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory? Doesn't register a blip? How about its sequel, Rengoku 2: The Stairway to H.E.A.V.E.N.? If neither game registers anything resembling warm or fuzzy, the metareview scores say you are not alone. It would seem that after two lackluster efforts on the PSP system, Hudson Entertainment has decided to stake its claim on the mobile phone market with yet another of their franchise titles. This Rengoku go-round has the cybernetic hero GRAM, "searching for the truth behind his existence." John Greiner, CEO of Hudson Entertainment believes its new home on the mobile platform is "a perfect fit" since it "features a healthy dose of action and adventure that cell phone gamers are sure to relish." Good riddance to bad rubbish, we say.
