The result is this XG1 gateway, a six-tuner DVR that's intended to be sold by TV providers and then hidden away in a closet, quietly distributing video to smart TVs or extenders located throughout the house. It runs TiVo's software with support for multi-room video, MoCA, mobile and tablet remote apps and at least 500GB of hard drive space inside. Since it hasn't announced any plans to bring this unit to retail we'll have to wait and see which providers decide to offer it when it becomes available in the Americas "later this year".</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/24/tivo-shows-off-pace-built-xg1-six-tuner-gateway-dvr-it-plans-to/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TiVo shows off Pace-built XG1 six-tuner gateway DVR it plans to ship later this year</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/24/tivo-shows-off-pace-built-xg1-six-tuner-gateway-dvr-it-plans-to/">TiVo shows off Pace-built XG1 six-tuner gateway DVR it plans to ship later this year</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 24 May 2012 03:52:00 EST. The 15.6-inch EasyNote TV and 17.3-inch LV will each use the new 22-nanometer processors both to push performance that little bit farther as well as get a middling five hours of battery life. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/22/kepler-comes-of-age-nvidia-unveils-geforce-600-series-gpus/">NVIDIA graphics</a> in GeForce GT 620M and 630M flavors will spruce up the gaming side, however, and Packard Bell is delivering a 20 percent more responsive multi-touch trackpad, dedicated music / social keys and a bamboo-like lid pattern to add a little dose of style. The duo will surface in Europe during June at prices starting from &euro;499 ($656). Acer has sometimes brought Packard Bell PCs to the US as roughly equivalent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Gateway/">Gateway</a> models and vice versa, so Americans shouldn't be surprised if they get counterpart laptops before long.</p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/05/04/packard-bell-tv-and-lv-ivy-bridge-laptops/">Packard Bell EasyNote LV, TV laptops bring Ivy Bridge to speed-hungry Europeans</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 04 May 2012 06:32:00 EST. We took a brief look at this year's BlackBerry World in Orlando, and were impressed by both its size and ease of use. A tiny dongle no larger than the Bold 9900's display, the device easily pairs up with any Bluetooth-enabled phone, tablet or music player and lets you push your tunes into a home or car stereo -- provided it offers ports for RCA cables, that is. NFC is also added into the mix this time around, which means you can impress friends by simply tapping your BlackBerry to the Gateway to initiate the pairing sequence. While it's not bringing anything drastically new to the table, its $50 price tag makes it a tempting offer for anyone whose <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/FMtransmitter/">FM transmitter</a> is picking up nothing but static in a densely populated city. If you fall into that category or are just looking for something to bedazzle close friends and relatives, don't hesitate to check out our gallery below and video after the break.</p><p> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-music-gateway-hands-on/">BlackBerry Music Gateway hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-music-gateway-hands-on/#4995207"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/jrv1dsc02256_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-music-gateway-hands-on/#4995208"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/jrv2dsc02257_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-music-gateway-hands-on/#4995209"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/jrv3dsc02259_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-music-gateway-hands-on/#4995210"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/jrv4dsc02261_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/blackberry-music-gateway-hands-on/#4995211"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/jrv5dsc02262_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/30/blackberry-music-gateway-hands-on-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>BlackBerry Music Gateway hands-on (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/30/blackberry-music-gateway-hands-on-video/">BlackBerry Music Gateway hands-on (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 21:48:00 EST. That day may soon dawn, as its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/09/28/microsoft-research-celebrates-20-years-of-crazy-innovation/">Research arm</a> has started testing its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/HomeAutomation/">home automation</a> software, called HomeOS, in twelve domiciles over the past few months. The budding system views smartphones, printers and air conditioners as network peripherals, controlled by a dedicated gateway computer. The project even has a handful of apps in play, which perform functions like energy monitoring, remote surveillance and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/11/microsofts-onevision-video-recognizer-can-detect-identify-and/">face-recognition</a>. This growing list of applications, available through a portal called "HomeStore", will allow users to easily expand their system's capabilities. So how does it all work out in the real world? Head past the break, and let Redmond's research team give you the skinny.</p><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/30/microsoft-research-home-automation-homeOS/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Microsoft Research wants to automate your house, introduces HomeOS</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/30/microsoft-research-home-automation-homeOS/">Microsoft Research wants to automate your house, introduces HomeOS</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 30 Apr 2012 02:03:00 EST. From Acer, at least, we expect multiple announcements: it's only ready to talk about a couple of desktops today, with news around laptops and Ultrabooks coming later. Right now, you can choose from several configurations of the Predator AG3620 gaming tower, with the top-shelf $1,200 model packing a 3.4 GHz Core i7 3770 CPU, NVIDIA GT630 graphics, 16GB of RAM and 2TB of storage space. On the budget end, the $799 Gateway D4860-UR14P will feature a 3.1 GHz Core i5 3450 processor, 6GB of RAM and a 1TB hard drive. Both are available now -- you know, if you've been waiting for precisely this sort of thing.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-predator-ag3620-and-gateway-dx4870-fx6860/">Acer Predator AG3620 and Gateway DX4870 / FX6860</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-predator-ag3620-and-gateway-dx4870-fx6860/#4978335"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/ag3620rt_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-predator-ag3620-and-gateway-dx4870-fx6860/#4978336"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/ag3620side_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-predator-ag3620-and-gateway-dx4870-fx6860/#4978337"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/ag3620so_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-predator-ag3620-and-gateway-dx4870-fx6860/#4978338"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/ag3620top_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-predator-ag3620-and-gateway-dx4870-fx6860/#4978339"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/04/dx4870expansionbay_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/04/23/acer-ivy-bridge-desktop-refresh/">Acer dips its toes into Ivy Bridge, refreshes two of its desktops with new processors</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 23 Apr 2012 12:00:00 EST. What makes this device special is its ability to speak more than one of the various wireless home control protocols currently in use, easily connecting to, controlling and spitting out macros to make multiple things happen with a minimum of user interference or setup. Want to dim the lights, lower the temperature and turn on security cams as soon as you step outside your door? It can do that. This will all be a part of Verizon's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/12/motorola-and-verizon-team-up-for-z-wave-monitoring-service-let/">Z-wave based Home Monitoring and Control system</a> at some point, if you're still wondering what possibilities are out there, check out our CES demo video embedded after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/23/motorola-connected-home-gateway-home-automation-fcc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Motorola Connected Home Gateway home automation all-in-one hits the FCC with Verizon tags</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/03/23/motorola-connected-home-gateway-home-automation-fcc/">Motorola Connected Home Gateway home automation all-in-one hits the FCC with Verizon tags</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 23 Mar 2012 23:33:00 EST. From the sound of things, the company will deliver a four stream transcoder similar to the one <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/11/updated-tivo-netflix-youtube-interfaces-and-ipad-streaming-hand/">we saw demonstrated at CES</a> (pictured above) capable of dishing out video to multiple devices (phones, tablets, etc.) within the home simultaneously. Also on the way is an IP set-top box coming to retail that sounds very much like the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/13/tivo-premiere-q-and-preview-boxes-are-official-along-with-an-upd/">TiVo Preview</a> multiroom extender, however it could include access to internet video services as well. As mentioned on <em>Tech of the Hub</em>, CEO Tom Rogers' statements indicate the transcoder will enable both live streaming and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/directv,nomad">DirecTV Nomad</a>-style "high speed" sideloading of recorded content for offline viewing. More concrete are its positive numbers from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/08/virgin-media-2011-q4/">partnership with Virgin Media in the UK</a>, and progress on a plan for Pace to develop TiVo-compatible set-top boxes for cable operators here and abroad. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/09/comcast-will-open-up-its-video-on-demand-to-tivo-premiere-dvrs-a/">Comcast partnership</a> is also apparently progressing, with VOD access in beta trials and preparing to launch "soon" in the San Francisco area.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tivo-network-transcoder-hands-on/">TiVo network transcoder hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tivo-network-transcoder-hands-on/#4741374"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/tivostreaming01lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tivo-network-transcoder-hands-on/#4741375"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/tivostreaming02lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tivo-network-transcoder-hands-on/#4741376"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/tivostreaming03lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tivo-network-transcoder-hands-on/#4741377"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/tivostreaming04lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/tivo-network-transcoder-hands-on/#4741378"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/tivostreaming05lg_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/23/tivo-q4-transcoder-ip-set-top-box/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>TiVo releases Q4 results, announces transcoder and IP set-top box on the way</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/02/23/tivo-q4-transcoder-ip-set-top-box/">TiVo releases Q4 results, announces transcoder and IP set-top box on the way</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 23 Feb 2012 18:28:00 EST. When we first told you about <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/motorolas-connected-home-gateway-makes-your-house-smarter-turn/">Motorola's Connected Home Gateway</a>, it was little more than a picture of a cool looking router. Thankfully, however, the company has been giving tours of the technology on the floor of CES, showing off the way it brings together such things as climate control, home security and automation. Of course, it's not really a real world use case here -- for one thing, the wireless in the Las Vegas Convention Center WiFi isn't all hot the week of CES, with ten billion gadgets being shown off at the same time. Still, the walkthrough we got was pretty cool, shutting off lights and the like from the comfort of your handy Motorola smartphone. Check out the demo, after the break.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-connected-home-tour/">Motorola Connected Home tour</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-connected-home-tour/#4743313"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/motorola-connected-home2011-05-0505-29-48800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="Motorola Connected Home tour" title="Motorola Connected Home tour" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-connected-home-tour/#4743314"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/motorola-connected-home2011-05-0505-29-56800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-connected-home-tour/#4743315"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/motorola-connected-home2011-05-0505-30-05800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-connected-home-tour/#4743316"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/motorola-connected-home2011-05-0505-30-57800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/motorola-connected-home-tour/#4743317"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/01/motorola-connected-home2011-05-0505-31-15800_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/11/motorola-connected-home-gateway-tour-video/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Motorola Connected Home Gateway tour (video)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/11/motorola-connected-home-gateway-tour-video/">Motorola Connected Home Gateway tour (video)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 11 Jan 2012 21:39:00 EST. Busy days at Broadcom, which has already forgotten about its earlier <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/broadcom-first-gigabit-speed-802-11ac-wireless-chipset/">5G WiFi</a> announcement and launched a barrage of new chips for set-top boxes and home networking. The line-up supports the latest <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/22/netgears-moca-coax-ethernet-adapter-kit-now-available-explaine/">MoCA</a> 2.0 standard for greater network bandwidth over coax wiring, but even more interesting is what some of the SoCs can do for smart TV and streaming. The BCM7425 dual-tuner HD gateway SoC will support <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sling/">Sling Media's</a> "place-shifting" platform, potentially making it easier for set-top manufacturers to enable TV streaming to mobile devices. A similar deal has been inked with Myriad over its clever <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/12/20/myriad-alien-vue-brings-google-tv-apps-to-existing-hdtvs-set-to/">Alien Vue</a> software (shown above), allowing Broadcom-equipped boxes to run apps designed for Google TV and HTML 5 without the need for extra dedicated hardware. In short, if your service provider fails to make TV content smarter or easier to access in 2012, they won't be able to blame it on Broadcom. Further details in the PR combo after the break and at the source link.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/broadcom-befriends-sling-and-myriad-outs-new-set-top-and-stream/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Broadcom befriends Sling and Myriad, outs new set-top and streaming chips</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/broadcom-befriends-sling-and-myriad-outs-new-set-top-and-stream/">Broadcom befriends Sling and Myriad, outs new set-top and streaming chips</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 13:39:00 EST. The world of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/homeautomation">home automation</a> is one full of disparate, fragmented pieces often requiring high-dollar contractors with trucks full of adapters. Motorola's been trying to streamline that with its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/4home">4Home</a> standard and the company's latest attempt at smarthome synchronicity has just been unveiled. It's called the Connected Home Gateway and it looks like your average wireless router, but it's actually much more than that -- according to Moto's press release, anyway, which promises the thing can easily tie together home security, automation and climate control into a single, petite box. Once harmonized, the whole package is said to be easily accessible from a mobile device, something that might help homeowners relax a bit more while on vacation -- or while covering a major convention in Las Vegas. We're still lacking a lot of details here (like, how exactly do all these devices connect to the thing) but we'll try to get a demo and more details as soon as possible.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/motorolas-connected-home-gateway-makes-your-house-smarter-turn/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Motorola's Connected Home Gateway makes your house smarter, turns it into a 4Home</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/01/05/motorolas-connected-home-gateway-makes-your-house-smarter-turn/">Motorola's Connected Home Gateway makes your house smarter, turns it into a 4Home</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 05 Jan 2012 13:30:00 EST. Speaking of Halloween, this week we shared instructions for making a <a href="http://www.inhabitots.com/how-to-make-a-diy-cardboard-box-robot-halloween-costume/">DIY cardboard box robot costume</a>, and we launched our 2011 <a href="http://www.inhabitots.com/announcing-the-2011-inhabitots-green-halloween-costume-contest/">Green Halloween Costume Contest for kids</a>. We also brought you several developments from the realm of eco textiles -- a <a href="http://www.ecouterre.com/scandinavian-scientists-develop-textile-that-repairs-its-own-rips-tears/">material that repairs its own rips and tears</a> and a Japanese company that <a href="http://www.ecouterre.com/triumph-japan-recycles-old-bras-into-power-generating-fuel/">recycles old bras into power-generating fuel</a>. Finally, we showcased several slick developments in aqueous technology: <a href="http://inhabitat.com/groundbreaking-elastec-oil-skimmer-awarded-1-million-in-oil-cleanup-x-challenge">an oil skimmer</a> that cleans up spills four times faster, an <a href="http://inhabitat.com/university-of-british-columbia-develops-artificial-muscles-to-propel-nanobots-through-the-body/">artificial muscle</a> that could one day propel nanobots through the body, and a quirky set of '<a href="http://inhabitat.com/macquariums-iconic-candy-colored-apple-imacs-recycled-into-aquariums/">Macquariums</a>' made from Apple iMacs.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/23/inhabitats-week-in-green-quantum-levitation-zombie-powered-ve/">Inhabitat's Week in Green: quantum levitation, Zombie-Powered Vertical Farm and Macquariums</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 23 Oct 2011 20:01:00 EST. We <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/26/acer-iconia-tab-a500-review">weren't exactly thrilled</a> with Acer's 10.1-inch <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/25/acer-iconia-tab-a500-now-on-sale-450-for-aluminum-clad-wifi-on/">Iconia Tab A500</a>, but that hasn't stopped Gateway from re-skinning the Honeycomb slate and claiming it for its own. Appearing to be a re-branded versions of the A500, the Gateway A60 comes with 16GB of built-in storage, 1GB RAM, a dual-core 1GHz Tegra 2 processor, a five megapixel rear-facing camera and front-facing two megapixel snapper, 802.11b/g/n WiFi connectivity and the list goes on. Just like its brother from another mother, this Gateway will set you back $399, and while we can't guarantee that it will perform the same, we'd suggest taking a look at our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/04/26/acer-iconia-tab-a500-review/">A500 review</a> before shelling out those clams.<br />

We know that this time of year can be pretty annoying and stressful for everyone, so we're here to help out with the heartbreaking process of gadget buying for the school-aged crowd. Today we're getting down to the very important business of helping you sift through laptops, and you can always head to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/backtoschool2011/">Back to School hub</a> to see the rest of the product guides as they're added throughout the month. Be sure to keep checking back -- at the end of the month we'll be <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/02/engadgets-back-to-school-2011-sweepstakes-were-giving-away-3/">giving away</a> a ton of the gear featured in our guides -- and hit up the hub page <a href="http://www.engadget.com/backtoschool2011">right here</a>!<br /></em><div style="text-align: center;"> <br /> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/engadgets-back-to-school-guide-2011-laptops/"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/2011-08-24-laptopbts.jpg" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div><br />Ah, laptops. <em>Some</em> of us received our first notebooks the summer before college if not later. But times have changed and we're sure for many of the kids reading this freshman year is just an excuse to upgrade from the clunkers that carried them through high school. Either way, this one's pretty much mandatory -- unless you're a serious gamer who insists on a desktop GPU for marathon sessions of <em>CoD: Black Ops</em>, you're going to need a laptop for pounding out last-minute term papers in the library, taking notes in class and posting incriminating photos on Facebook. The problem is, the market's overrun with laptops that purport to be just <em>perfect</em> for the back to school set. They can't all be worth your money, though, so we whittled the list down to a handful of choices for each budget -- and if you're lucky you'll get your very own <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/17/hp-pavilion-dm1z-with-amd-fusion-review/">HP Pavilion dm1z</a> for the pretty price of, well, nothing. Simply leave a comment below to be entered to win, and check out <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/02/engadgets-back-to-school-2011-sweepstakes-were-giving-away-3/">our giveaway page</a> for more details. So wipe off the glasses, grab your clicker, and get ready to jump past the break for a top-level overview of this year's picks for back to school.<br /><br /><div style="text-align: center;"> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/engadgets-back-to-school-guide-2011-laptops#comments"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2011/08/bts-sweepstake-banner-1312388435.png" style="border-width: 0px; border-style: solid; margin: 4px;" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/engadgets-back-to-school-guide-2011-laptops/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Engadget's back to school guide 2011: laptops</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/26/engadgets-back-to-school-guide-2011-laptops/">Engadget's back to school guide 2011: laptops</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 26 Aug 2011 12:00:00 EST. Acer's had <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/07/acer-announces-redesigned-aspire-timelinex-series-laptops-price/">its day</a> (<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/06/16/acer-unveils-aspire-ethos-laptops-built-to-please-eyes-and-ears/">or two</a>) unveiling back-to-school laptops, and now it's its sister brand Gateway's turn. The outfit just announced the 15.6-inch NV series and the 14-inch ID47, both of which include USB 3.0 and a choice of Sandy Bridge processors. (In the case of that entry-level NV, you can also opt for one of AMD's fresh-off-the-line <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Llano/">Llano</a> chips.) But the company did more than just give its notebooks a spec bump -- it also tweaked their designs, adding a chiclet keyboard to the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/13/gateway-nv-has-a-new-matte-lid-and-social-networking-button-sam/">NV series</a>, while the metal-clad <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/23/gateways-glowing-id-series-arrives-along-with-new-lt-series-net/">ID's</a> trackpad is 20 percent larger and no longer glows like a mood ring. The ID47 also has a 14-inch display crammed into a chassis usually paired with 13.3-inch panels, as well as a non-removable battery that promises up to eight hours of juice. (The NV is rated for up to four hours.) And, in an unusual twist, our friends in Canada will get additional choices, including a 15.6-inch version of the ID, as well as select models with <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/NVIDIAOptimus/">NVIDIA Optimus</a>. Both the ID47 and NV55 / NV57 are available now, with the ID starting at $629.99 and $799 Canadian, and the NV fetching $529.99 and $499 Canadian. Check out the various configurations after the break, with lots 'o photos below.<br />

<strong>Update: </strong>Lots of you are asking about the screen resolution on these guys. It's not in the press release, but the answer is 1366 x 768, across the board.<br />

The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/10/shaw-gateway-dvr-is-the-six-tuner-son-of-moxi/">six tuner Shaw Gateway DVR</a> we mentioned recently is built on <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Arris/">Arris</a> hardware, and now the company revealed more information about its Whole Home Solution setup at its core. The press release after the break details the specs used by Shaw's implementation (500GB hard drive, HD UI, four port router, MoCa and optional WiFi N) plus additional capabilities the Shaw Gateway hasn't taken advantage of yet (over the top video from the internet, VoIP, an integrated DOCSIS 3.0 modem and user media sharing). We spoke to Senior VP of Marketing and Development Stan Brovont and found out that this particular project has been under development for about a year now, and many of the features are in response to focus groups indicating that the number of tuners and hard drive space (the 500GB drive was up to Shaw) were among the most important features.<br />
<br />
While he did mention there were other partnerships not yet announced in the pipeline and couldn't comment on any potential return to retail for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/moxi">Moxi-derived</a> system, our friend Dave Zatz dug up a <em>Multichannel News</em> post mentioning a similar system coming to Oregon local provider BendBroadband. Check the Arris press release after the break for more details, we'll keep holding out hope for another retail DVR option in the marketplace.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/12/arris-confirms-the-shaw-gateway-dvrs-moxi-bloodlines-hints-at/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Arris confirms the Shaw Gateway DVR's Moxi bloodlines, hints at more to come</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/05/12/arris-confirms-the-shaw-gateway-dvrs-moxi-bloodlines-hints-at/">Arris confirms the Shaw Gateway DVR's Moxi bloodlines, hints at more to come</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 12 May 2011 16:52:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/shaw">Shaw Cable</a> in Canada unveiled its DVR of the future today, calling the Shaw Gateway Experience "a new world of entertainment." As it turns out, that new world is actually very familiar, consisting of an Arris six tuner DVR and multiroom companion box. The Gateway (pictured above) is a six tuner DVR with a CableCARD slot, 500GB hard drive, WiFi, DLNA and an HD guide that looks just like the Moxi DVR technology <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/22/digeo-purchased-by-arris-promises-continued-moxi-development-s/">Arris purchased over a year ago</a>. The Total Home Portal is the multiroom box that appears to be a refreshed edition of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/08/04/the-moxi-summer-update-brings-the-moxi-mate-sdv-support-and-mor/">Moxi Mate</a> extender that lacks its own tuner or hard drive but can stream live or recorded video from the gateway. The cost of one Gateway and Portal is $600 up front or $17/month, while an extra portal is $178 or $5/month. They're currently only available in Calgary and are due to arrive elsewhere in Canada later this summer.<br />

Microsoft's working hard to get people believing in its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/all/windowsembedded">Windows Embedded Standard</a> platform as a real set-top box contender and one of its vanguard devices is the above Gateway Media Console. It's still a concept product in the Acer / Gateway labs, but what it promises to deliver makes us wish it hurries up and makes the leap to retail nice and quickly. Based around a Sandy Bridge Intel CPU, this machine runs Windows Media Center and gives you access to all the internet-connected content that you can enjoy on your Windows 7-equipped PC, but it also boasts a <a href="http://hd.engadget.com/2010/03/30/ceton-infinitv-4-cablecard-tuner-review/">InfiniTV 6 CableCARD</a> tuner that permits up to six HD broadcast TV streams at a time. Those can then be networked out throughout your house -- whether over a wireless or wired connection -- and then recorded on whatever laptops, desktops or other Windows devices you have lying around the house. The end result is that the kids can be recording a pair of channels upstairs in their bedroom while you watch the football game in the living room and your mother-in-law enjoys whatever she's into down in the basement -- all coming in from the same, single coax cable plugged into the Media Console. There's a hidden optical drive as well and Microsoft tells us this thing could range between $500 and $700 when it does eventually make its way out for sale.<br />

<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Gateway/">Gateway</a> has just announced updates to its line of desktop computers with the FX, DX, and SX Series. The new desktops will now boast Intel's Core i5 2300 processors, and Intel's HD67 Express chipset. In addition, the desktops will get a boost from newer graphics in the form of NVIDIA's GeForce GT440. The FX 6850-51 boasts 1.5GB of video memory, 1GB of RAM, and a 1TB hard drive. Several other FX models pack Intel Core i7 CPUs, up to 9GB of memory, and up to 1.5TB hard drives, plus a choice of Blu-ray / DVD combo drives. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/DXSeries/">DX Series</a> also boast Blu-ray drives, a hard drive expansion bay, and an up to 1.5TB SATA drive (expandable to 3.5TB total). The Gateway FX6850-51 will be available starting next week for $999, while the new DX models, which include the DX4350-43, the DX4850-27, and the DX4850-45, will be available next week with prices ranging from $599.99 to $749.99. In addition, the newly thinned down SX Series desktops (including the SX2803-25e, the SX2851-09e, the SX2851-41, and the SX2851-41e) will now boast the device dock previously seen on the DX Series, and will also be available next week with a starting price of $499.99. Full press release is after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/gateway-updates-fx-and-dx-series-desktops-with-core-i5-2300-cpus/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gateway updates FX and DX Series desktops with Core i5 2300 CPUs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/05/gateway-updates-fx-and-dx-series-desktops-with-core-i5-2300-cpus/">Gateway updates FX and DX Series desktops with Core i5 2300 CPUs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 05 Jan 2011 14:01:00 EST. Ooh, what's this? A couple of desktops rocking Intel's latest and greatest, available for purchase perhaps a few days too early? Matthew T. spotted these machines at a Vancouver Future Shop, advertising Core i7 2600 and Core i5 2300 processors, which fall squarely in the Intel <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/intel,core2011">Core 2011</a> (n&eacute;e <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sandybridge">Sandy Bridge</a>) family. Both come from Gateway and both offer <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/03/intels-2nd-generation-core-processor-family-announced-includes/">all that core 2011 has to offer</a>, which in the case of these desktops isn't too much since neither has a Blu-ray drive to take advantage of the new 3D HDMI 1.4 support and neither has much use for <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/widi">WiDi</a> 2.0 wireless displays. But, don't let that stop you from being the first on your block to Core it up 2011 style.<br />

Gateway has just outed a new 11.6-incher over in Japan, with the EC19C-A52C/S boasting some of the most impressive specifications we've seen in a unit this compact. A 1.33GHz dual-core Core i5-470UM processor sits at the heart of this here lappie, and it's accompanied by a 320GB hard drive, 1366 x 768 resolution display, 2GB of RAM, HDMI / VGA outputs, an inbuilt Ethernet port and a six-cell battery that should last half a dozen hours (on a good day). As expected, you'll also find a 1.3 megapixel webcam, 4-in-1 card reader, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi, Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit) and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/21/bluetooth-3-0-hs-gets-official-adds-speed-with-802-11/">Bluetooth 3.0</a> (a nice touch, we'll confess), with sales expected to start right about now in the Land of the Rising Sun. As for pricing? Try &yen;65,000, or right around $775. Told you it didn't quite fit the netbook category.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/27/gateway-stuffs-core-i5-470um-bluetooth-3-0-into-11-6-inch-ec19c/">Gateway stuffs Core i5-470UM, Bluetooth 3.0 into 11.6-inch EC19C-A52C/S laptop</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 27 Nov 2010 20:02:00 EST. Belkin just got official with its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/01/belkin-conserve-gateway-will-track-your-whole-home-energy-usage/">Converse Gateway</a> wireless energy monitoring system earlier this month, and already it looks to be making a beeline to your local utility company. As the temperatures drop and energy use skyrockets, this here setup is designed to attach to a smart meter on the exterior of your home and beam information about usage to your PC (in a nutshell, anyway). Any smart device that's connected in your home can be listed in the UI, giving you a heads-up as to what youngster is burnin' up the most juice when you leave on business for the weekend. Per usual, a stop by the FCC's database generally signals a near-term release in the US of A, with <i>Wireless Goodness</i> suggesting that these are already starting to pop up around the country. Though, you'll have to phone up your local energy company to inquire about a professional installation -- we don't get the impression that these are going to be stocked at Wally World.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/14/belkins-conserve-gateway-checks-in-with-the-fcc-may-be-at-your/">Belkin's Conserve Gateway checks in with the FCC, may be at your utility company</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 14 Oct 2010 20:37:00 EST. Whoa, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Gateway/">Gateway</a>! Go on and get down with your bad self. The gem pictured above goes by FHD2303L, and it's easily one of the sexiest LCD monitors that we've seen in recent memory. The company engineered the 23-incher with a transparent frame and an asymmetrical stand, and much like the glossy-bezel'd FHX2152L (21.5-inch) and FHX2402L (24-inch), it also packs a 12,000,000:1 dynamic contrast ratio, 1920 x 1080 native resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio. The FHD model boasts a five millisecond response time, while both of the FHX panels check in with a two millisecond response time; the whole crew offers 250 nits of brightness, VGA / DVI outputs and reasonable price tags. How reasonable? Try $249.99, $189.99 and $249.99 in order of mention, with the lot hitting US retailers this month.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/gateway-intros-gorgeous-23-inch-fhd2303l-monitor-two-new-fhx-lc/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gateway intros gorgeous 23-inch FHD2303L monitor, two new FHX LCDs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/05/gateway-intros-gorgeous-23-inch-fhd2303l-monitor-two-new-fhx-lc/">Gateway intros gorgeous 23-inch FHD2303L monitor, two new FHX LCDs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 05 Oct 2010 08:00:00 EST. Having trouble finding an all-in-one PC that fits <em>you</em>? We have no idea why, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/all-in-one">they're everywhere these days</a>, but just in case you're still striking out you might want to check out Gateway's new ZX One series refresh. The desktops have a fresh little curved look to them, with prices starting at $900 for a 21.5-inch machine (ZX4951) with a 2.8GHz Pentium G6950 processor, while a 23-inch number (ZX6951) with a 3.2GHz Core i3-550 processor is a mere $100 more. If those prices sound steep to you for machines with Intel HD integrated graphics, you should know that multitouch screens and Blu-ray come standard in this lineup. Both computers are available now online and at retail.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/01/gateway-gives-its-zx-one-multitouch-all-in-ones-a-new-look-and-s/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gateway gives its ZX One multitouch all-in-ones a new look and some new specs</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/10/01/gateway-gives-its-zx-one-multitouch-all-in-ones-a-new-look-and-s/">Gateway gives its ZX One multitouch all-in-ones a new look and some new specs</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 01 Oct 2010 12:31:00 EST. We're not sure exactly what Kevin Ashton is looking to find inside the back of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/belkin">Belkin</a> Conserve Gateway he's holding. As General Manager for the division that produced it, he should know quite well what it is: a sort of wireless gateway that connects your smart meter and smart appliances to your network, letting you capture your whole-home energy usage in real-time. Earlier entries in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/17/belkin-conserve-lineup-will-make-you-feel-even-worse-about-all-t/">Belkin Conserve line</a> allowed you to track and manage individual devices, but this new gateway uses <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/zigbee">ZigBee</a> to talk to your meter and compatible devices, then turns around and pumps that information to a "cloud-based device management system." Belkin hasn't shown us any interface shots yet, so we don't know exactly how that information will be presented, but we're assured it will be easy to understand -- even for corporate executives who confuse Ethernet ports with kaleidoscopes.<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">Gateway's just announced an update to its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/gateway+nv+series">NV series laptops</a>, the NV59C66U. This one, which comes in both 15.6 and 17-inch sizes, boasts an integrated Intel 6250 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/WiMAX/">WiMAX</a> card and an updated chassis design. Other than that, you have a choice of Intel Core i3 or Core i5, as well as AMD Athlon or Turion processors, up to 4GB of DDR3 RAM (upgradeable to 8GB), and an up to 500GB hard drive. The NV59C66U also has 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Gigabit Ethernet LAN, and a choice of DVD or Blu-ray drives. Gateway's taking the opportunity to update the entire NV line as well, so look for all of these options to hit in the coming weeks, with prices starting at around $480. The WiMAX model will run you $699.99, and you can grab one today. Hold onto your hyperthreaded horses, because this is liable to whip up an angry mob -- Intel's asking customers to pay extra if they want the full power of their store-bought silicon. An eagle-eyed Engadget reader was surfing the Best Buy shelves when he noticed this $50 card -- and sure enough, Intel websites confirm -- that lets you <em>download </em><em>software</em> to unlock extra threads and cache on the new Pentium G6951 processor. <em>Hardware.info</em> got their hands on an early sample of the chip and discovered it's actually a full 1MB of L3 cache that's enabled plus HyperThreading support, which translates to a modest but noticeable upgrade. This <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/28/intel-core-i7-875k-and-core-i5-655k-unlock-multipliers-better-p/">isn't exactly</a> an unprecedented move, as chip companies routinely sell hardware-locked chips all the time in a process known as binning, but there they have a simpler excuse -- binned chips are typically sold with cores or cache locked because that part of their silicon turned out defective after printing. This new idea is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/11/ea-sports-to-charge-used-game-buyers-10-to-unlock-basic-online/">more akin to video games</a> that let you "download" extra weapons and features, when those features were on the disc all along. Still, it's an intriguing business model, and before you unleash your rage in comments, you should know that Intel's just testing it out on this low-end processor in a few select markets for now.<br />

But how's about the tech support that's so whimsically promised with so many laptops these days? Our pals over at <i>Laptop</i> put in an inordinate amount of work in order to find out, pinging a full dozen manufacturers via phone and chat in order to measure hold time, level of support offered and overall satisfaction. Just about every major laptop maker was included (Acer, Apple, Dell, Lenovo, HP, Toshiba and Fujitsu, just to name a few), and an in-depth report of their findings was posted for each one. In general, though, they found that most companies wouldn't hang around long enough to answer those nagging questions that typically end up in forums ("How do I remove bloatware?"), oftentimes pointing the caller to a paid alternative that would actually take the time to address their issues. If you're considering a new machine, and you aren't exactly one of those nerdy go-getters who can troubleshoot everything yourself, you should certainly give the source links below a look. <div style="text-align: left;">We're not sure why Gateway's waited so long to release the details and pricing on the LT32 -- considering it's pretty much a rebadge of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/01/acer-aspire-one-521-and-721-review/">Acer Aspire One 721</a> we just reviewed -- but lo and behold the HD-capable, 11.6-inch ultraportable will be hitting the street soon for $450. Just like the $430 Aspire One 721, the LT32 is powered by AMD's 1.7GHz Athlon II Neo K125 CPU, runs Windows 7 Home Premium, and packs a 250GB hard drive and 2GB of RAM. It also has <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/amd-promises-better-battery-life-and-thermals-with-new-neo-cpus/">ATI Radeon HD 4225</a> integrated graphics, which as we saw on the recent Acers handles 1080p flash and local video like a champ. From the looks of things the LT32 also seems to have a similar chassis to the 721, so we're not totally sure why you'd choose it over the Acer when it's $20 more, but perhaps there's just some Gateway diehards amongst us. Hit the break for the full release.</div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/07/gateway-lt32-to-hit-retailers-soon-for-450/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gateway LT32 to hit retailers soon for $450</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/07/gateway-lt32-to-hit-retailers-soon-for-450/">Gateway LT32 to hit retailers soon for $450</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 07 Jul 2010 00:00:00 EST. Oh sure, Acer may have spent the first half of the week convincing us that its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/acer,laptops">newest laptops and netbooks</a> were the sweetest systems around, but now it's turning the attention to its Gateway brand only tempt us with equally as enticing options. The ID series has been on our radar ever since we saw its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/gateway-ec39c-and-id49c08u-preview/">blue-glowing touchpad</a> at Computex, and luckily both the 14-inch ID49 and 15.6-inch ID59 will hit US retailers for less than $800 in the coming weeks. The exact configurations are unclear, but they'll have Core i3 / i5 CPU options as well as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/topic/nividia-optimus">NVIDIA Optimus</a> graphics. On the netbook front, Gateway's bringing out the 10.1-inch LT23, which looks the same as the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/26/amd-netbooks-acer-aspire-one-521-and-gateway-lt22-hands-on/">LT22</a> we caught a glimpse of a few weeks back. Powered by an Intel Atom N450 CPU, 1GB of RAM and a 250GB hard drive, the netbook will start at a tempting $329. Check out the gallery below for some shiny press shots and the full press release after the break. Who needs a backlit keyboard when you have a backlit touchpad? Okay, that's really a rhetorical question, but Gateway's newest 13.3-inch EC339C and 14-inch ID49C08u do in fact have glowing blue touchpads. The pad itself only lights up when you put your finger to it, and like <a href="http://i.engadget.com/2010/03/01/hp-spices-up-probooks-with-core-2010-cpus-clickpads-and-caviar/">HP's ClickPads</a> have integrated mouse buttons. The rest of the thin and light machines are equally as impressive -- they have nabbed Acer's chiclet style keyboard and have that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/13/gateway-nv-has-a-new-matte-lid-and-social-networking-button-sam/">dedicated social networking</a> key that Gateway seems to be adding to many of its systems. The key, which may very well have the cutest logo of all time stamped upon it, launched a social networking widget that allows for adding Facebook, YouTube and Flickr feeds to a timeline. Internally, the EC39C packs a Core i5 ULV processor and NVIDIA Optimus for switching between the GeForce 310 GPU and Intel's integrated HD graphics. The ID49C08u has a standard voltage Core i5, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and an onboard optical drive. Your guess is as good as ours about availability and pricing, but we did grab you some nice hands-on shots and a video of that crazy touchpad after the break. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-ec39c-and-id49c08u-hands-on/">Gateway EC39C and ID49C08u hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-ec39c-and-id49c08u-hands-on/#3038623"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/gatewaygal01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-ec39c-and-id49c08u-hands-on/#3038625"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/gatewaygal02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-ec39c-and-id49c08u-hands-on/#3038626"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/gatewaygal03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-ec39c-and-id49c08u-hands-on/#3038628"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/gatewaygal04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-ec39c-and-id49c08u-hands-on/#3038629"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/gatewaygal05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/gateway-ec39c-and-id49c08u-preview/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gateway gets snazzy with glowing touchpads on EC39C and ID49C08u laptops</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/04/gateway-ec39c-and-id49c08u-preview/">Gateway gets snazzy with glowing touchpads on EC39C and ID49C08u laptops</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 04 Jun 2010 05:23:00 EST. Just in case you were wondering <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/25/four-more-major-laptop-manufacturers-will-use-nvidia-optimus-by/">where and when</a> you might get a taste of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/03/nvidias-optimus-technology-shows-its-graphics-switching-adroitn/">Optimus elixir</a>, NVIDIA has handed us a detailed list of Computex debutants that will be taking the graphics switching technology with them to retail. A total of sixteen new Optimus machines are on show in Taipei, and although ASUS is still the biggest purveyor (with six SKUs, not counting previously announced products), Lenovo and Acer have also jumped on board, with the IdeaPad <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/04/lenovos-ideapad-y460-now-on-sale-and-not-a-moment-too-soon/">Y460</a> and a pair of Packard Bell <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/04/14/packard-bell-rolls-out-13-4-inch-easynote-butterfly-laptop/">EasyNotes</a>, respectively. Notably, the FX700 above from MSI is marked as using an "unannounced" next-gen graphics chip, which we suspect might be the GTX 460M, a mobile GPU that NVIDIA is showing, but not talking about yet. Guess that'll be slotting in just below the recently unveiled <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/25/nvidia-geforce-gtx-480m-worlds-fastest-mobile-gpu-now-offici/">GTX 480M</a>. We've got pictorial evidence of the 460M's existence after the break, along with the full list of new Optimus-ized machines, which you can also scope out in the gallery below.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nvidia-optimus-at-computex-2010/">NVIDIA Optimus at Computex 2010</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nvidia-optimus-at-computex-2010/#3034454"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/466299708840db734144b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nvidia-optimus-at-computex-2010/#3034453"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/4662386815c960a7c287b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nvidia-optimus-at-computex-2010/#3034449"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/4658249903d3100d2f85b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nvidia-optimus-at-computex-2010/#3034450"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/4658259999e20c3da350b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/nvidia-optimus-at-computex-2010/#3034451"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/06/465888437087ee5acf29b_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/nvidia-shows-16-new-optimus-laptops-at-computex-teases-460m-gpu/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>NVIDIA shows 16 new Optimus laptops at Computex, teases GTX 460M GPU</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/02/nvidia-shows-16-new-optimus-laptops-at-computex-teases-460m-gpu/">NVIDIA shows 16 new Optimus laptops at Computex, teases GTX 460M GPU</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 02 Jun 2010 08:05:00 EST. Sure, Acer may already have the Ion 2-powered <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/03/acer-aspire-one-532g-with-ion-2-priced-at-an-aggressive-379-euro/">Aspire One 532g</a> in its arsenal, but who's going to complain about two more HD-capable, 10-inch netbooks? Showing some serious love to AMD, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/19/acer-set-to-launch-amd-based-aspire-one-521-netbook/">Acer Aspire One 521</a> and Gateway LT22 both pack new 1.2GHz <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/12/amd-promises-better-battery-life-and-thermals-with-new-neo-cpus/">AMD V105 processors</a> along with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4225 graphics. The latter is what had us most impressed when we caught some time with the duo at the Netbook Summit -- the 521 and LT22 handled 1080p WMV video and light gaming without any stuttering. We'll hold our real performance conclusions until we can test the battery life on these bad boys, but other than that they look like decent netbook contenders with the standard 1GB of RAM and 160GB hard drives. And unlike the typical Atom netbook, they have HDMI ports. We can't say we're the biggest fans of the 521's in-your-face Aspire One branding on its glossy cover, but the LT2203 delights with its textured matte lid. No word from Acer on the availability and pricing of these here in the US, but hit the gallery below for some imagery, or the source link even <em>further</em> below for a video of these two in action. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-aspire-one-521-gateway-lt22-and-lt2203/">Acer Aspire One 521, Gateway LT22 and LT2203</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-aspire-one-521-gateway-lt22-and-lt2203/#3015896"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/aceramdnetbooks01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-aspire-one-521-gateway-lt22-and-lt2203/#3015897"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/aceramdnetbooks02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-aspire-one-521-gateway-lt22-and-lt2203/#3015898"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/aceramdnetbooks03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-aspire-one-521-gateway-lt22-and-lt2203/#3015899"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/aceramdnetbooks04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/acer-aspire-one-521-gateway-lt22-and-lt2203/#3015900"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/aceramdnetbooks05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/26/amd-netbooks-acer-aspire-one-521-and-gateway-lt22-hands-on/">AMD netbooks: Acer Aspire One 521 and Gateway LT22 hands-on</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 26 May 2010 17:43:00 EST. We've still yet to find a great reason to eschew our tried-and-true mouse / keyboard tandem in favor of using our desktop with just our fingers, but if you know better, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Gateway/">Gateway</a> has a new duo it'd sure love for you to check out. The ZX4300 line, which is the lower-end of the two, gets served AMD's Athlon II X2 CPU, Windows 7 Home Premium (64-bit), a 20-inch touchpanel (1,600 x 900 resolution), integrated ATI Radeon HD 4270 graphics, 4GB of DDR3 memory a 640GB hard drive, 8x SuperMulti drive, a bundled wireless keyboard and mouse, inbuilt WiFi, gigabit Ethernet, six USB 2.0 sockets and a pair of five-watt speakers. The Gateway One ZX6900 family sports a 23-inch LCD (1,920 x 1,080), and while the vast majority of the specs mimic the others we've mentioned, the Core i3 power plant is a notable reason for paying extra. Speaking of which, the ZX4300-01e is slated to first hit stores next month for $749.99, while the ZX6900-01e lands alongside of it for $1,019.99.<br />

Remember the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/26/gateway-nv5933u-review/">Gateway NV Series</a> laptop that we reviewed? Of course, you do -- it's pretty hard to forget a laptop with a Blu-ray drive and Core i3 processor for $650. Well, Gateway didn't forget about it either, and has updated the 15.6-inch NV5 and 17.3-NV7 with new blue, black and red matte lid options, and a one-touch social networking button. The former is pretty self-explanatory, but the latter seems um, interesting. Apparently, a button on the keyboard deck will launch some sort of Facebook, YouTube and Flickr interface that will display a feed of updates. We're not sure why you wouldn't just launch your browser to check out those things, but we know, we know, it's hip to include social networking features. Other than that, the laptop still has an Core i3-330M processor, 320GB hard drive, Windows 7 Home Premium, and a 4x Blu-ray drive. The 15.4-inch NV59C09u will turn up on shelves at around $799, but we don't have final word on the 17-incher's price yet. Hit the break for the full PR, and sift on through the warm press images. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv-press-shots/">Gateway NV press shots</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv-press-shots/#2978330"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/gatewaynvgal01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv-press-shots/#2978331"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/gatewaynvgal02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv-press-shots/#2978332"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/gatewaynvgal03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv-press-shots/#2978333"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/05/gatewaynvgal04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/13/gateway-nv-has-a-new-matte-lid-and-social-networking-button-sam/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gateway NV has a new matte lid and social networking button, same tempting price</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/13/gateway-nv-has-a-new-matte-lid-and-social-networking-button-sam/">Gateway NV has a new matte lid and social networking button, same tempting price</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 13 May 2010 00:00:00 EST. <div style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Gateway/">Gateway</a>'s just launched two 15.6-inch laptops -- the NV59C-H34E and the NV59C-H54E. Both of these Windows 7 Home Premium bad boys boast 1366 x 768 HD displays, 4GB of DDR3 RAM, and a 640GB SATA HDD. They also have Intel integrated graphics, HDMI, VGA and three USB 2.0 ports, plus Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, and Gigabit Ethernet LAN. So what is the difference between these two lookalikes? Unsurprisingly, it's their CPUs. The NV59C-H34E packs a 2.13 GHz, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Corei3/">Core i3</a> processor, and is available in silver and blue, while the NV59C-H54E (which sadly only comes in silver) boasts a 2.26GHz <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Corei5/">Core i5</a> CPU. These will be available on April 23rd in Japan, but you can already score <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/26/gateway-nv5933u-review/">Gateway's Core i3 NV5933u</a> in the U.S. right now.</div><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/21/gateway-busts-out-core-i3-core-i5-nv-series-laptops/">Gateway busts out Core i3, Core i5 NV series laptops</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 21 Apr 2010 12:01:00 EST. Three years and one bankrupt MPC later, Gateway's ready to give it another go with brand new business desktops, and some decently specced ones at that. The new Gateway DT-series mid-towers support up to Core i7 CPUs and 16GB of DDR3 memory alongside a 1TB hard drive, and wonder of wonders, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/small+form+factor">small form factor</a> Gateway DS-series can hold just the same. Both run on Intel's Q57 and H57 Express chipsets, both have slots for optional PCI Express x16 graphics cards, and both have chassis stolen directly from their parent company -- Google "X480G" and "M480G" if you don't believe us. Compared to your <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/02/03/gateways-fx-series-desktops-revamped-sx-dx-series-find-solac/">shiny new gaming rig</a>, the specs may seem ho-hum, but a Core i7 rig that fits <em>underneath</em> an LCD monitor is still a fairly big deal inside that cube of yours.<br />

<strong>Update</strong>: Looking to bolster your business with a few of these machines? You'll have to get in touch with your international associates; Acer tells us the DT and DS desktops are only headed to Europe. <p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/20/gateway-brings-back-business-division-with-dt-ds-series-desktop/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gateway brings back business division with DT, DS-series desktops (update: Europe only)</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/04/20/gateway-brings-back-business-division-with-dt-ds-series-desktop/">Gateway brings back business division with DT, DS-series desktops (update: Europe only)</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 20 Apr 2010 03:29:00 EST. A Core i3 processor, Blu-ray drive, and 320GB hard drive for $629.99 -- does the Gateway NV5933u really need more of an introduction than that? We didn't think so, since that's all it took for us to track down the budget multimedia 15.6-inch laptop and get it into our eager hands. For a budget system it sure has the specs to carry it on home, but after the dog has barked at the mailman and you've gotten it out of the box, how is it in actual everyday use? You know where to find out. We'll see you after the break in our full review. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv5933u-review/">Gateway NV5933u review</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv5933u-review/#2836576"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/03/gatewaynv5933u01_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv5933u-review/#2836577"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/03/gatewaynv5933u02_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv5933u-review/#2836578"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/03/gatewaynv5933u03_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv5933u-review/#2836579"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/03/gatewaynv5933u04_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/gateway-nv5933u-review/#2836580"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2010/03/gatewaynv5933u05_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div><p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/26/gateway-nv5933u-review/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gateway NV5933u review</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/26/gateway-nv5933u-review/">Gateway NV5933u review</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 26 Mar 2010 14:45:00 EST. In the market for new desktop machinery? <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Gateway/">Gateway</a>'s gone ahead and given its gaming-centric FX series a facelift for the new year -- nothing Alienware-esque crazy, but we do like the accessible ports up top, right next to the control dial for LED-infused lighting effects. Enough about the superficial, let's go inside: a 2.8GHz Intel Core i7 processor, ATI Radeon HD5850 with 1GB discrete memory, 1.5TB HDD with additional expansion bays, up to 16GB RAM, Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit, and a $1,299 starting price. There's a 16x DVD drive, and if you don't mind forking over a little extra, you can get a separate 4x BD-ROM drive. As for the rest of the lineup, while still donning old skin, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/24/gateway-unveils-dx-mini-tower-and-sx-small-form-factor-pcs/">SX series</a> has been boosted by a 2.93GHz Core i3 processor, and the DX series a 3.2GHz Core i5 and that 4x BD-ROM drive. You know the drill by now: FX glamor shots below, press release just after the break.<br />

Gateway isn't daring to call its <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/gateway-pumps-out-ec-series-netbooks/">ED14D</a> a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/netbook/">netbook</a> -- probably because of that built-in DVD optical drive -- but there's nothing outside of that to prove that it's anything more. That said, it's easily one of the most intriguing 11.6-inch machines out there, and while it's not slated to ship for a few more days still, the crew over at <i>Notebook Italia</i> has managed to get their hands on one. Hit up the Source link if you've never seen a netbook with an optical drive before, and then hit <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/01/13/mouse-computers-new-netbook-sports-dvd-rom-little-else-of-note/">this link</a> while asking yourself where you were in January of 2009.<p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/28/gateways-dvd-playin-ec14d-netbook-spotted-in-the-wild/">Gateway's DVD-playin' EC14D netbook spotted in the wild</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 28 Jan 2010 18:01:00 EST. <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Gateway/">Gateway</a> might want us to refer to its new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2009/10/19/gateway-intros-15-6-and-11-6-inch-ec-series-laptops-ec58-ec54/">EC Series</a> laptops as ultraportables, but we're calling this one like we see it... it's almost a netbook, but not quite. Regardless, the just announced EC14D boasts and 11.6-inch display and, oddly enough, an integrated DVD drive. Weighing in at just around 3 pounds, the EC14D is light and thin... just like a small laptop should be. Internally, it's got an Intel Ultra Low Voltage Pentium Core CPU, a 320GB hard drive, up to 8GB of memory (in two 4GB modules), a multicard reader, and Windows 7 Home Premium. If you're filled with anticipation at the thought of this one, well, you won't have to wait long. It'll be available by the end of January for a starting price of $629.99. Full press release is after the break.<p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/gateway-pumps-out-ec-series-netbooks/" rel="bookmark">Continue reading <em>Gateway pumps out EC Series ultraportables</em></a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/08/gateway-pumps-out-ec-series-netbooks/">Gateway pumps out EC Series ultraportables</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 02:47:00 EST.
