Samsung just accidentally leaked a Sprint-bound Android QWERTY slider called the Moment in an otherwise totally boring press release about its OLED handset lineup -- it'll have an 800MHz processor, a 3.2-inch AMOLED screen, optical trackpad and a 3.2 megapixel camera. We're guessing this is the long-rumored "high-end" InstinctQ, but we're not sure why Sprint and Sammy have dropped the Instinct branding in favor of Moment. Samsung has a press event scheduled for 2PM EST, so we're guessing we'll find out more shortly -- stay tuned.

Update: Oop -- Sprint just posted its PR ahead of the event as well, along with a pre-registration page. Yep, the Moment is indeed the InstinctQ. Pricing will be $179 on a two-year contract after $50 instant savings and a $100 mail-in rebate when it launches November 1. Oh, and there's no TouchWiz here after all -- that's another hyped manufacturer UI shelved in favor of "With Google" branding. It's been a little piece of time since we saw that photo of the G1-esque Samsung InstinctQ emerge, and we were starting to wonder what had become of our newest QWERTY cutie. Well -- the M900, as it's also known -- has just ducked through the old FCC, and though we didn't really learn anything we didn't already know, it was just nice to see its face again. The Sprint-bound, CMDA / EV-DO-loving Android slider will pack Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, and we have to say that it's looking pretty fly to our eyes. We're not sure when this bad boy's going to hit reality, but the FCC appearance makes us think it won't be too long now.

[via Unwired View, thanks Ryan]
Filed under: Handsets, Samsung, Sprint, Android

Samsung InstinctQ for Sprint passes by the FCC and turns a few heads originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 22 Sep 2009 09:29:00 EST. Going off mere clues, hypotheses and shreds of evidence, we've been trying to wrap our brains around the InstinctQ for a while now -- and finally we've got a picture that firms everything up: it's definitely an Android-powered landscape QWERTY slider for Sprint. We know the Hero's in the pipeline, too, so between these two, Sprint could be poised to catch up to T-Mobile in a big, big way (as far as Android goes, anyhow) this fall. We think we're digging the touch-sensitive Home, Menu, and Back buttons, and the expansive keyboard looks plenty usable. The screen isn't looking quite as vibrant as its autobahn-driving European cousin, the Galaxy -- but we'll wait on passing final judgment until it's in our hands, of course. Any chance that's happening soon?
Ûber-green Reclaim might be taking center stage today, having found itself a home with Sprint, but Samsung had a couple other forward-thinking comments that we think are worth highlighting. For starters, the Now Network should expect to carry a high-end, AMOLED device from the phone maker in the fourth quarter of this year. That description, however, fits the bill for any number of Sammy phones currently in the works -- if we had to take a shot in the dark, we'd be anxious to know what screen technology is inside the oft-rumored InstinctQ. Looking ahead to 2010, Reclaim product manager mentioned to NY Times that it'll be launching an Android device "for well under $100" next year -- looks like the HTC Click is gonna have itself some competition, after all. Hey Sammy, you know what'd be great? A smartphone that was Android, AMOLED, and under $100 -- we can dream, can't we?
Let's go through the steps together, shall we? A "senior member" forum poster on the xda-developers forums has posted the above pic as proof that the HTC Hero is coming to the US on October 11th -- a claim he's been making as far back as April, but this is the first time he's brought a picture with him. The poster says he works for a wireless developer firm, and while this picture can easily be faked, we don't think it's necessarily that much of a stretch. Let's look at some of the other phones listed. There's "Samsung Q (Android)," which could provide a missing link between the InstinctQ and the company's mysterious Android phone that was supposed to be out on Sprint and T-Mobile by now. BlackBerry Aries is the CDMA version the Curve 8520, and traditionally RIM's CDMA devices wind up on both Sprint and Verizon. The LG LX610 / Lotus 2 is a new one to us, but Lotus seems to have been well-received for Sprint. So to pull all that data together, if this list is the real deal, we'd say it came from Now Network company. This is the sort of phone Dan Hesse would be glad to have waited for, isn't it?
Thought that the upcoming m850 was the end of the road for the Instinct series on Sprint? Apparently not, seeing how a so-called m900 "InstinctQ" just nabbed WiFi certification. Other than the fact that it's a "phone, dual mode," we can't make much of it -- but we do know that North American Samsungs starting with "SPH" are destined for Sprint, and the InstinctQ name certainly jibes with that. Cellpassion intriguingly claims that it could be packing Android, which would makes some amount of sense considering that Samsung and Sprint are both getting into the Android game and the Instinct line is considered one of Sprint's hero brands. We're going to hold off on waving the green flag of Android victory until we see some proof, but we're hopeful -- if not for our sake, than for Sprint's.
