Extras will still run the aforementioned sum, which Cupertino has justified by saying the units will include chips to enable features like analog and USB audio along with syncing and charging. There's also a $39 cable version available, but neither format will let you output HDMI or VGA video -- there's more (as yet unpriced) adapters <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/14/lightning-to-hdmi-and-vga-cables-incoming-says-apple/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">coming</a> for that.</p><p> <strong>Update:</strong> Well, the plot thickens. We're now hearing reports that the above wording is a mistake, and that the adapter isn't included after all. The information comes via a reader of <em>The Next Web</em>, who advises Apple sales support informed them it was an error. Of course, we're reaching out to get the final word on the matter. However, that won't be much consolation to those who made a purchase based on incorrect info.</p><p> <strong>Update 2: </strong>The above wording is now nowhere to be found on Apple's site, suggesting that it was indeed an error. We'll keep you posted if we hear anything more.</p><p> <strong>Update 3:</strong> Well, we've just received word from Apple confirming that the iPhone 5 will not ship with a 30-pin to Lightning adapter, which is a bit of a bummer. But, it does come with a Lightning to USB adapter, so if your current accessories have a USB port, all hope is not lost. Sadly, the specific iPod out functionality found in BMWs and Minis is not supported. The full comment is below.</p><blockquote> <p> The Lightning to 30-pin adapter does not come in the box with iPhone 5. It is sold separately. However, the Lightning to USB cable does come with iPhone 5 for connection to AC chargers and other devices... The Lightning to 30 Pin adapter supports analog audio output, USB audio, as well as syncing and charging. Lightning to VGA and Lightning to HDMI cables will be available in the coming months.</p></blockquote>

We've got a trifecta of approvals on the way for 2012 that start with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/iphone-5-hands-on-video-details/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5</a>. What's hard to miss is the absurd number of cellular bands at work: as Apple had to make <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-iphone-5-lte/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">separate iPhone 5 models</a> to cover every LTE carrier it supports, on top of the usual alphabet soups for CDMA and GSM, the filing combining the two devices is one of the largest we've seen to date. The addition of 5GHz WiFi support only compounds the situation.</p><p> A pair of iPods also made their appearances today, and they've been given the regulatory once-over as well. The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/pod-touch-hands-on-2012-video/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPod touch</a> has the 5GHz WiFi band included and isn't special by itself, but the new <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/ipod-nano-hands-on-2012/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPod nano</a> is noteworthy simply for showing up at all -- the inclusion of Bluetooth means a spin past the testing facility in addition to some wireless audio. We're still digging to see if the iPhone or new iPods have any surprises, although you can have a first-hand look through the source links.</p><p> <em>Brad Molen contributed to this report.</em></p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apples-phil-schiller-explains-new-lightning-port-doesnt-thi/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Apple VP explains lack of NFC, wireless charging in iPhone 5, new 'Lightning' port" data-src-height="360" data-src-width="600" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/philschillerawwwyeah600px.jpg" /></a></p><p> Now that we know <em>much</em>, <em>much more</em> about Apple's latest iPhone, we can't help but wonder why certain features are missing from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone5?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5</a>. For instance, near-field communication -- standard in many iPhone competitors -- is notably absent. This seems especially odd considering iOS 6's Passbook feature, which acts like a virtual wallet for gift cards, boarding passes, and other such things, would be a perfect fit for NFC technology. "Passbook does the kinds of things customers need today," Apple senior VP Phil Schiller told <em><a href="http://allthingsd.com/20120912/interview-phil-schiller-on-why-the-iphone-5-has-a-new-connector-but-not-nfc-or-wireless-charging/">All Things D</a></em>.</p><p> Schiller also explained the reason for the iPhone 5's new "Lightning" port, which allows for faster data transfer between phone and computer, but also requires an adapter ($29) for use with Apple's previous wire standard. Apparently Apple's future lineup would be impossible without the new connecter, according to Schiller. He attempted to assuage concerned consumers with one hopeful promise: "This is the new connector for many years to come."</p><p> And finally, when pressed on wireless charging -- a main feature of Nokia's flagship Windows Phone 8 device, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/lumia920?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lumia 920</a> -- Schiller said such a feature offers little to consumers beyond confusion. "Having to create another device you have to plug into the wall is actually, for most situations, more complicated," he said. As per usual, the iPhone 5 will charge via USB -- using the new dock connector, of course. But surely, turning a bunch of cables into just one giant wireless charging plate aligns well with Apple's simplicity design, right?</p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-earpods-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="Apple EarPods handson" data-src-height="400" data-src-width="600" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/earpoddsc09021.jpg" /></a></p><p> By now, you're probably familiar with Apple's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apples-infamous-earbuds-rebranded-for-iphone-5-as-earpods/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">latest earbuds</a>. But are they an improvement over their arguably disposable predecessor, you ask? You bet. Still, they're not going to win out over high-end or even mid-range audio options. That's to be expected, though -- the EarPods do sound better, and, well, they cost 29 bucks and ship with all of the devices Apple announced today. The attractive white 'buds are packaged in a plastic case that's quite similar to the enclosure that Apple introduced with its previous-gen step-up set. They're very lightweight, not that you had any doubts, and appear to be durable enough. The "one size fits all" design worked well in our ears -- it wasn't a snug fit by any means, but we didn't fear that they'd fall to the ground with the slightest movement.</p><p> You'll net the best performance in quieter settings, considering that they don't isolate sound like some other options on the market, and if you're a frequent air traveler or often find yourself working in noisy environments, you'll probably want to consider other options. That said, folks who don't need the absolute best or want to save up for a better solution should find these to be sufficient -- we didn't have a chance to do any in-depth testing and analysis, but expect that to come after we've had a chance to digest all of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iphone2012/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">today's new gadgets</a>. For now, you can take a closer look in the hands-on gallery just below.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-earpods-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Apple EarPods hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-earpods-hands-on/5281014?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc09018_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-earpods-hands-on/5281015?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc09020_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-earpods-hands-on/5281016?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc09021_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-earpods-hands-on/5281017?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc09026_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-earpods-hands-on/5281018?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc09028_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

Essentially, the GM seed is the final version of the OS sent out to developers -- as an opportunity to fully test their apps -- before the rest of the general public, which will take place on September 19th. The Xcode 4.5 GM seed is now available as well. Head to the link below, log into your developer account, and venture over to the iOS Dev Center to find the download links.</p><p> <strong>Update: </strong>it looks like it's fully working now. Hop to it!</p>

By a pretty notable margin. Picking up the iPhone 5 is almost jarring -- it's barely heavy enough to feel "premium," and it'll probably make you handle it with care for free of breaking it in half with too tight a tug. The new Dock Connector -- also known as <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-details-new-dock-connector-its-called-lightning/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lightning</a> -- is most certainly smaller, and looks most at home on the new iPod nano. Without further qualifying, have a look at the comparison gallery below. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5 vs. iPhone 4S: a photo gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/5280903?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05854_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/5280904?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05855_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/5280905?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05856_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/5280906?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05843_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-vs-iphone-4s-a-photo-gallery/5280907?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05844_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Apple's Lightning port vs. Dock Connector: a photo gallery</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/5280915?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05857_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/5280916?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05858_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/5280917?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05852_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/5280918?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05853_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-lightning-port-vs-dock-connector-a-photo-gallery/5280919?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc05850_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

But is it the best smartphone money can buy? For kicks and giggles, we've pitted the specs of Tim Cook's darling against those found in the top Android and Windows Phone devices (as a disclaimer, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/05/nokia-lumia-920-official-dual-core-1-5ghz-snapdragon-s4-cpu-wi/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Nokia Lumia 920</a> has yet to be officially released, but we have received nearly all of the essential stats). So how does the iPhone 5 hold up against some of its most vicious competitors? Follow along after the break as we analyze the best of the best.</p><p> <strong>Note:</strong> We're still waiting to get final word on a few of the specs, but we'll update the post as those details come to light.</p>

We just got our hands on the newest, tiniest music player outside of Apple's product launch today, replete with a 2.5-inch multitouch panel and a familiar Home button. As you'd expect, the enlarged display is hugely beneficial. While there's no bona fide version of iOS on here, the stripped-down variant seems sufficient for handling media alone. As if the ability to watch widescreen video wasn't enough, fitness gurus are also apt to take notice -- inbuilt support for Nike+ gear, along with Bluetooth, make this one potent device.</p><p> The Lightning connector seems to make a lot of sense here, given the dearth of real estate along the bottom, but somehow the company squeezed a big enough battery in here to net some 30 reported hours of battery life. In playing with it, we found screen transitions to be adequately smooth, and video playback was surprisingly enjoyable to watch. The screen is most definitely less stunning than the one on the iPod touch, but at $149, you can bet quite a bit of these end up in stockings this holiday season. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/7th-generation-ipod-nano-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">7th-generation iPod nano hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/7th-generation-ipod-nano-hands-on/5280686?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc08985_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/7th-generation-ipod-nano-hands-on/5280687?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc08988_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/7th-generation-ipod-nano-hands-on/5280688?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc08989_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/7th-generation-ipod-nano-hands-on/5280689?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc08990_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/7th-generation-ipod-nano-hands-on/5280690?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc08991_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

The <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-announces-fifth-generation-ipod-touch-6-1mm-thin-88grams/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">newest iPod touch</a> takes a note from the newfangled display on its cellular sibling, bringing a vaster panel (the same 4-inch, 1,136 x 640 one found on the new iPhone). At 88 grams and just 6.1mm thick, it's also shockingly thin and light -- of course, the anodized aluminum backing makes it feel like a premium piece of kit. Premium, as in, right up there with the iPhone. In a world where Apple's seeing its iPod sales sink <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/24/apple-announces-q3-2012-earnings-tktktk/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">quarter after quarter</a> due to self-cannibalization from the iPad and iPhone, it's interesting (but appreciated) to see so much effort placed on the new iPod touch.</p><p> The introduction of the dual-core A5 chip (that's dual-core on the CPU and the graphics side) is a huge boon for the touch. Apple's claiming a 7x improvement in graphics, and given that this thing is claiming such a huge swath of the mobile gaming market, it's pretty much a necessity. Indeed, our interactions with the device were notably faster than on the prior touch. We didn't exactly have 40 hours here to test the audio playback claims (in fact, we didn't even have eight to test the claims on video), but you can bet that'll be a huge selling point.<div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5th-generation-ipod-touch-hands-on/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">5th-generation iPod touch hands-on</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5th-generation-ipod-touch-hands-on/5280577?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc08971_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5th-generation-ipod-touch-hands-on/5280578?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc08973_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5th-generation-ipod-touch-hands-on/5280579?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc08974_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5th-generation-ipod-touch-hands-on/5280580?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc08975_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/5th-generation-ipod-touch-hands-on/5280581?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/dsc08976_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p>

There's only one change here, but it's by far the most important -- colors! Now the tiny PMPs will match their revamped "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-announces-fifth-generation-ipod-touch-6-1mm-thin-88grams/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iTouch</a>" brothers. Just, you know, with much less functionality. There's even a soft and subtle pink model for all those ladies out there that love being pandered to and a Project (RED) version for the socially conscious. <p class="image-container" style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apples-infamous-earbuds-rebranded-for-iphone-5-as-earpods/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/earpods600pxprodshot.jpg" /></a></p><p> Yes, finally -- <em>finally</em> -- Apple's years-long headphone debacle may finally be at an end, with the introduction this morning of redesigned <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/earbuds?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">earbuds</a>. Their new name: "EarPods." Like so many things from today's Apple press conference, the new earphones look an awful lot like a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/01/next-apple-earbuds-potentially-sighted-in-vietnam/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">leak</a> we saw earlier this month. Apple says the new earphones feature, "a breakthrough design for a more natural fit and increased durability, and an incredible acoustic quality typically reserved for higher-end earphones." As seen above, they feature a main and secondary grill on each "pod," and the iPhone version has an inline remote / microphone built-in along the wire. The set looks starkly different from past Apple earphone offerings -- no rubber, distinctly less visible metal, and an all-plastic outer shell.</p><p> Rather than create a plugged-up seal as most in-ear headphones do, the pods rest at the edge of your ear canal with the main grill directed straight into it. A port on the back of each bud helps airflow to enhance the midrange, while dual ports on the bottom of each stem helps the bass response. Overall, the intention is to maximize airflow for optimal sound quality. Apple claims the design results in, "overall audio quality [that's] so impressive, they rival high-end headphones that cost hundreds of dollars more." They're available today for purchase as a standalone, and will ship with the new iPod Touch, Nano, and iPhone 5. A standalone set with an inline remote / mic will cost you the same $29 price point of its predecessor -- and they're already available at the source link below. <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-infamous-earbuds-rebranded-for-iphone-5-as-earpods/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Apple's infamous earbuds rebranded for iPhone 5 as 'EarPods'</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-infamous-earbuds-rebranded-for-iphone-5-as-earpods/5280152?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0582-1347475020_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-infamous-earbuds-rebranded-for-iphone-5-as-earpods/5280153?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0584-1347475020_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-infamous-earbuds-rebranded-for-iphone-5-as-earpods/5280155?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0585-1347475021_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-infamous-earbuds-rebranded-for-iphone-5-as-earpods/5280156?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0586-1347475021_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apples-infamous-earbuds-rebranded-for-iphone-5-as-earpods/5280158?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0587-1347475022_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p> <em>Joe Pollicino contributed to this report</em>.</p>

Now seven generations in, the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/iPodnano/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPod nano</a> is getting a refresh with a 38-percent thinner profile and svelte 5.4mm thickness. The multitouch screen now measures 2.5-inches across and sports a physical home button right below. Also packed in to this evolutionary PMP leap is an FM tuner with DVR-like functionality for playback control, Bluetooth radio (for wireless streaming support), inbuilt pedometer and, of course, that slimmed-down <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-details-new-dock-connector-its-called-lightning/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Lightning dock connector</a>. And, according to Cupertino, this wee media player should last for up to 30 hours, making it the longest lasting nano the company's ever built. You can snag this 16GB lil' fella in a near rainbow of colors -- seven in all -- this October when it goes on sale for $149. Official PR after the break.</p><p> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-outs-refreshed-ipod-nano/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Apple outs refreshed iPod nano</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-outs-refreshed-ipod-nano/5279702?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0447-1347474094_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-outs-refreshed-ipod-nano/5279703?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0448-1347474094_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-outs-refreshed-ipod-nano/5279704?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0449-1347474095_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-outs-refreshed-ipod-nano/5279706?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0450-1347474095_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-outs-refreshed-ipod-nano/5279707?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0452-1347474095_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-ipod-nano-refresh/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPod nano (2012)</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-ipod-nano-refresh/5280398?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/jrv3ipodnano7upallcolorsheroprint_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-ipod-nano-refresh/5280399?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/jrv2ipodnanobluwpodsprint_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-ipod-nano-refresh/5280400?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/jrv1ipodnano7uppbpfwpodsprint_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p> <em>Check out our <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/apple-iphone-5-liveblog/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">liveblog</a> of Apple's event to get the latest news as it happens!</em></p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center; "> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/ios-6-gets-official/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img alt="" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0213-1347471664.jpg" /></a></p><p> Now that the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/iphone-5-officially-announced/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5</a> is officially out of the bag, it's time to talk software. Apple hasn't exactly kept its cards close to its chest in regards to iOS 6: Cupertino teased the software at <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/11/apple-unveils-ios-6-at-wwdc/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">WWDC</a>, letting us in on the direct Facebook integration, the new Maps application, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/11/apple-passbook/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Passbook</a> and "Do Not Disturb" in the process. Today the OS gets official, and Scott Forstall demoed the software on the iPhone 5.</p><p> Not too much new here, but the software <em>is</em> out of its beta phase and ready to ship. One of the most hyped additions to iOS 6 has been the Maps application, which includes Siri navigation, 3D building view and satellite imagery. In Safari, there's now a full-screen mode and you'll be able to share tabs from your desktop with your phone (dubbed iCloud Tabs). We're also seeing Passbook in action once again, bringing up a plane ticket at the lockscreen when you get to the airport, for example. One new thing here: Delta is confirmed as a partner for this digital ticket service.</p><p> As we've already known, on the Siri front you can bring up sports ranking and Rotten Tomatoes movie ratings via the voice assistant. And, of course, one of the most welcome new features is <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/11/apples-facetime-finally-goes-cellular-says-so-long-to-wifi-res/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">FaceTime over cellular</a> -- no mention of whether that will be supported on all carriers, but it certainly looks that way. iOS 6 will be available on September 19th (also when the iPhone 5 will go on sale), and it's coming to the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, new iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch.</p><p> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-event-ios-6/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iOS 6 gets official debut on the iPhone 5</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-event-ios-6/5278703?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0214-1347471827_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-event-ios-6/5278704?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0215-1347471828_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-event-ios-6/5278705?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0217-1347471828_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-event-ios-6/5278706?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0218-1347471829_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/apple-event-ios-6/5278707?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/img0219-1347471829_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-6-siri/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iOS 6 Siri</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-6-siri/5278890?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/ios-6-siri-iphone-5-8_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-6-siri/5278891?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/ios-6-siri-iphone-5-7_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-6-siri/5278893?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/ios-6-siri-iphone-5-6_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-6-siri/5278894?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/ios-6-siri-iphone-5-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/ios-6-siri/5278897?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/ios-6-siri-iphone-5-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p> <em>Check out all the coverage at our iPhone 2012 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/event/apple-iphone5-event-2012?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">event hub</a>!</em></p>

Say hello to the reversible, 80 percent smaller, Lightning. The likes of Bose, BLW and B&amp;O are already working on new compatible docks while the new connector itself is now easier to connect, more durable, all digital, with an adaptive interface which warrants some closer inspection. Naturally, an adapter will also be made available for your existing iPhone peripherals, but if you have a number of devices to connect, it's likely to put a hurt on your wallet -- the adapter is now for sale in the Apple Store for a whopping $29. At least it'll pair well with that Thunderbolt connection, right?</p><p> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-lightning-connector/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5 Lightning Connector</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-lightning-connector/5278580?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-connector-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-lightning-connector/5278579?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-connector-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-lightning-connector/5278578?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-connector-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-lightning-connector/5278576?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-connector-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-lightning-connector/5278575?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-connector-5_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p> <em>Check out all the coverage at our iPhone 2012 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/event/apple-iphone5-event-2012?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">event hub</a>!</em></p>

He hinted at a significant shrinkage in transistor size, allowing the chip to be 22 percent smaller than the A5 and hence more energy-efficient, while at the same time -- he says -- doubling all-round CPU and graphics capabilities. By way of practical benefits, the Apple CEO promises the Pages app will load up 2.1x faster than before, while Keynote attachments will hit the screen 1.7x faster. At this point we're lacking any further detail about cores or clock speeds or indeed who actually fabricated the A6 (still Samsung, after all that <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/24/apple-v-samsung-decision/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">bitterness</a>?), but Apple does tend to be close-lipped on such things. In the meantime, bring on the benchmarks!</p><p> <em>Check out all the coverage at our iPhone 2012 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/event/apple-iphone5-event-2012?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">event hub</a>!</em></p>

<p class="image-container" style="text-align: center; "> <img alt="Apple details iPhone 5's new camera 8MP, 'same as iPhone 4S but thinner'" data-src-height="400" data-src-width="600" src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/isight600pxheaderimg23513.jpg" /></p><p> Apple's got a new camera in <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/iphone-5-officially-announced/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">its brand new iPhone 5</a>: 8-megapixels with a 3,264 x 2,448 backside-illuminated sensor, five-element lens, and f/2.4 aperture sits on the rear of the new device. "Same as the iPhone 4S, but thinner." 25 percent thinner in fact, to match the now slimmer iPhone. The branding remains the same -- it's still the iSight -- but a few new bells and whistles have been added alongside the thinning. A new dynamic low light mode, for one, and a fancy sapphire crystal cover. The phone's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/iphone-5-processor/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">new A6 processor</a> also helps out, offering a "smart filter" for better color matching, as well as speedier capture and still capture during video.</p><p> In terms of functionality, there's a new panorama mode, that allows picture stitching for multiple images into one larger shot (a whopping 28 megapixels in total) -- it looks like the 4S is getting this function as well, though it's unclear if it'll be via <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/ios-6-gets-official/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iOS 6</a> or what. Photo sharing is also getting expanded, adding more social functionality -- images can be shared with multiple friends or family members, and then those folks can comment.</p><p> But you only care about video, don't you? You'll be glad to hear that it's getting expanded as well. The rear camera still offers 30fps 1080p HD capture, albeit with better image stabilization. The front facing camera now features 720p video for all your <em>extreme close-ups.</em> Speaking of FaceTime, it will be available via LTE on the iPhone 5. But on <em>all</em> mobile networks? We're not so sure just yet.</p><p> <em>Check out all the coverage at our iPhone 2012 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/event/apple-iphone5-event-2012?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">event hub</a>!</em></p>

Fortunately, Apple had a huge, <em>global</em> list of carriers that are going to work with Apple's latest. In the US, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/ATT/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">AT&amp;T</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/sprint?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Sprint</a> and <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/15/verizon-lte-network-new-markets-expanding-coverage/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">Verizon</a> will all support true 4G connectivity, while Canada's Rogers, Telus and Bell will also get the hook-up. In Europe, the newly established <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/11/everything-everywhere-announce-the-uks-first-major-4g-network/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">EE</a> and Deutsch Telekom will gain LTE, while in Asia, KDDI, Softbank, KT, SK Telecom and SmartTone will all be provided for.</p><p> <strong>Update: </strong>Apple's detailed all the technical specs of its new radio in the US, but we're looking at what's arguably the first LTE world phone -- unless there's a second model to do the rounds in Asia and Europe. It's the first device to run on the LTE networks of all the major carriers, although unfortunately there no AWS (1700MHz) HSPA+ for T-Mobile customers. Take a look at the more coverage link to get knee-deep in frequencies -- there's plenty of HSPA to go around.</p><p> <div class="postgallery"><p><strong>Gallery: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-wireless-connectivity/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5 Wireless Connectivity</a></strong></p><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-wireless-connectivity/5278209?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-wireless-4_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-wireless-connectivity/5278210?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-wireless-3_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-wireless-connectivity/5278211?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-wireless-2_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-wireless-connectivity/5278212?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-wireless-1_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a><a href="http://www.engadget.com/photos/iphone-5-wireless-connectivity/5278265?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget"><img src="http://www.blogcdn.com/www.engadget.com/media/2012/09/iphone-5-wireless-12_thumbnail.jpg" alt="" title="" /></a></div></p><p> <em>Check out all the coverage at our iPhone 2012 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/event/apple-iphone5-event-2012?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">event hub</a>!</em></p>

CEO Tim Cook has just revealed that Apple has sold (not just shipped) 400 million iOS devices from the 2007 launch through to June 2012, a hike from the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/11/apple-brags-sells-365-million-ios-devices-140-million-imessage/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">365 million</a> it reported at WWDC. For context, Google's Andy Rubin mentioned just Tuesday that a total of 500 million Android devices had been activated, although the gap may be closer than implied at first: there's been a few months between then and now, after all. Still, the new tallies show that Google wasn't waiting for the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/12/iphone-5-officially-announced/?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">iPhone 5</a> to quicken its pace, even if Apple's sales are still very brisk.</p><p> <em>Check out all the coverage at our iPhone 2012 <a href="http://www.engadget.com/event/apple-iphone5-event-2012?utm_source=Feed_Classic&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Engadget">event hub</a>!</em></p>
