Conan O'Brien once had a recurring segment on Late Night called "Guests We Won't Have Back," during which he would look back at guests (who were fake) that he regretted having on the show. There was bug expert Sara Wiggins, who ate a live beetle in front of the camera. And there was wine expert Charles Nance who, during his on-air wine tasting session, drank himself into a drunken stupor. digg_url = 'http://digg.com/apple/Some_Things_We_May_Not_See_Again_From_Apple'; Despite its fairly strong record over the last decade, Apple has not been without its lapses and major changes. And, in the spirit of Conan O'Brien's "Guests We'll Never Have Back," let's take a look at "Some Things We'll Never Have Back" on the Apple front.

Now that you can get 256kbps, DRM-free music from iTunes (well, in May, anyway) you're going to want to hear what that extra $0.30US buys you. You could pick up an iPod HiFi for $350US, or wait a bit for the Amplifi by Griffin Technology. The Amplifi is a 2.1 sound system for all iPod models (it accommodates other players as well) that features a wooden case and bass reflex port plus two 2-3/4" neodymium drivers on the front and one 5" woofer underneath. It also features standard audio in and a remote. Check out this video of our very own Scott McNulty talking Amplifi with the Griffin folks at Macworld for some first hand impressions. Now for the million dollar question...what's it going to cost? The iPod HiFi's price tag has successfully kept many shoppers away, and no information is currently available on the Amplifi's cost or shipping date. If it's more moderately priced than the HiFi, it could be a winner.

Ah, the powerful tactic of product placement, in which a real, commercial product is used in a fictional setting (for a fee, of course). Check out the screen grab of Texas Hold 'Em for iPod [iTunes link] that reader Michael sent us. Is that an iPod and iPod HiFi on the bookcase in the background? Why, yes it is. You can view a larger version of the screenshot after the jump. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to finish my game of cards...and spend my winnings on an iPod HiFi.Thanks, Michael!

So, you say you're unimpressed with the iPod HiFi? Or maybe you find the price a bit prohibitive. No worries, just check out the iBoom LoFi. PC Mag writer Bill Machrone got himself an old Sanyo boom box, crammed the iPod into the cassette drawer and got the whole thing wired up for under $50. You can read all about just how he did it, and even register to win the iBoom LoFi. Won't your friends be impressed?

Those very detail oriented fellows at Ars Technica have set their sights on high end iPod speaker systems, and there can be only one. The review takes a look at the Apple iPod HiFi, the Altec Lansing inMotion iM7, and the Klipsch iFi.The review is very in depth, but I don't want to say any more lest I spoil the fun for you (but the iPod HiFi does better than expected).

We've been a little while since our last podcast, but we're back, and just in time, too. After last week's Apple non-announcements, we got some blockbuster business news: RIM and NTP finally settled? AT&T buying BellSouth (and thus the controlling stake of Cingular) for 67 billion dollars? Microsoft learns how to launch a buzz campaign with Origami? And if that wasn't enough Engadget turned two years old last Thursday. It's been loads of fun, but we're only getting started. Also, be sure to phone, Gizmo, or email in your usual questions and comments -- and especially your tech support horror stories for our support nightmare podcast later this week. The new iPod Hi-Fi looks really cool, but who has $350US sitting around doing nothing? Why now whip up your own solution from the parts you probably have sitting around your house right now? That's what Phillip over at Make:Blog did. Buy hacking an iPod speaker unit together with an old pair of Apple Pro speakers, a modified iPod dock and a nano, he's made himself a working, though slightly unattractive, iPod speaker system. Nicely done. Here is a Flickr set for your viewing pleasure.
