Guess what? Working with JVC, NHK has developed just that. It might not be much to look at, but that hunk of tech up there comes with the extra frame rate that also makes it play <strike>fast</strike> nice with the sensor technology NHK was kind enough to develop first. The projector will be giving its first public demos on May 24th , and we hope that 7680 x 4320 resolution will make all those hi-res skate-slams come out a charm.

Continue reading NHK and JVC develop 120fps Super Hi-Vision projector

NHK and JVC develop 120fps Super Hi-Vision projector originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 18 May 2012 15:29:00 EST. The company's Mobile News Camera packs a trio of 1/3-inch 1080p 12-bit sensors, a 29-667mm lens, 3.5-inch LCD, SDXC compatibility and HD-SDI outputs, but it also includes WiFi connectivity with FTP server support, letting you record then automatically transmit footage back to a newsroom for editing and broadcast. The camera itself is very compact, considering that it's primarily suited for professional news applications, and also includes all the standard audio hook-ups, like dual XLR jacks, a shotgun mic holder, headphone jack and a separate connector for a wireless mic receiver, along with GPS and Android/iOS app control. JVC also launched another model, the GY-HM600, which offers similar features, save for those wireless connectivity bits. Both cameras look nearly identical, though the company only had the less-abled 600 on display at NAB. That camera will retail for $4,695 when it hits in the fall, while the 650 will cost you $1,000 more, with a winter 2012 shipping estimate. We weren't able to peek at the WiFi model at the show, but you'll be able to get a fairly good idea of how that camera will look in the glass-enclosed HM600 shots below.

Gallery: JVC GY-HM600 Advanced Handheld Camera hands-on

Continue reading JVC demos GY-HM600, launches HM650 Mobile News Camera with WiFi and FTP at NAB

JVC demos GY-HM600, launches HM650 Mobile News Camera with WiFi and FTP at NAB originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 17 Apr 2012 15:15:00 EST. If not, what's the point, really? While we're sure that's not the main selling point with JVC's NX-BX3 home theater sound system with integrated stand, it's certainly an important one. The system features an FM tuner, SRS StudioSound HD and can also hold glasses or a flower vase on its top -- really, the sky the limit (plus some general weight restrictions, we'd imagine) when it comes to the things you can place on top of it. The dock arrives in Japan this month.
JVC's NX-BX3 is an iPod dock that you can put things on top of originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 01 Feb 2012 21:44:00 EST. Unfortunately (but not surprisingly) the company wasn't letting us take footage with the kit, but we were allowed plenty of unsupervised time with the device. You'll notice how retro this whole thing looks -- the hefty unit is placed in a housing that wouldn't be out of place with a VHS-C camcorder from the early '90s. There's no mount for additional lenses (the $10,000 Red Scarlet uses interchangeable Canon lenses), which means that you won't have any flexibility if you need to set up a complex shot on the fly. The test unit came with a hot-shoe adapter that included dual XLR inputs and a shotgun mic, but we expect this to be an added extra at retail. The zooming is smooth (we couldn't hear any motor noise) and when we screwed with the manual focus, it was able to snap back to clarity within three seconds. We're a little concerned about who the camera is aimed at: it lacks the flexibility that the Red would offer but it seems a little hefty (it's $5,000) for consumers -- so it looks like it's limited toward roaming broadcast professionals who need their recordings in HD. That said, the ability to decode 4K recordings without additional rendering might come in very handy for those who are prepared to pay a premium for that flexibility. Still, if you fancy watching us take a tour of the hardware and seeing it up close, head on past the break for the video.

Gallery: JVC 4K Camcorder hands-on

Edgar Alvarez contributed to this report.

JVC's GY-HMQ10 4K Camcorder hands-on (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 15 Jan 2012 18:23:00 EST. It's powered by a Falconbird LSI chip, toting a 10 x optical zoom and a 0.5-inch 8-megapixel CMOS that'll record footage at a resolution of 3840 x 2160. The chip's USP is its ability to process the footage as it's being recorded rather than storing it for post processing later. It'll compress the video down enough, in real time, that you'll be able to store up to two hours of 4K video on sufficiently equipped SDHC card. You can also crop out images on the 3.5-inch LCD touchscreen. It'll set you back $5,000 when it arrives in March and at that price, we'll take two (oh, and there's a PR for you, after the break).

Continue reading JVC's 4K camcorder begins making throat-cutting motions towards the RED Scarlet

JVC's 4K camcorder begins making throat-cutting motions towards the RED Scarlet originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 17:05:00 EST. JVC's 2012 Everio lineup was just launched, containing seven new models with 1080p recording based on the AVCHD format. There's also a UXP mode with a 24Mbps sampling rate, an HDMI output and a built-in WiFi module in four of the units. We've seen wireless support pop up on cameras in recent months, and even a few pocket camcorders have managed to get cozy with 802.11b/g/n, but it's not everyday you see a legitimate, Full HD shooter with the stuff. We're told that a free app will be made available for Android and iOS devices, enabling users to wirelessly transfer video and stills to a smartphone for quick sharing via the internet.

It also allows the phone to be used as a remote control for the Everio and offers geotagging of video and photo files in conjunction with the smartphone's GPS. Not surprisingly, the video email function only allows clips of up to 15 seconds (and the resolution is capped at 640 x 360) to be sent directly from the Everio to up to eight email addresses, but at least the Live Monitoring functionality allows real time monitoring on a smartphone or computer of images taken with the cam. Prices for the lineup range from $229.95 to $899.95, with the whole lot shipping in Q1 of this year; the real question, however, is whether or not there's still a meaningful market for these things.
Continue reading JVC's 2012 Everio 1080p camcorder lineup gains WiFi, enables geotagging and remote control via smartphone

JVC's 2012 Everio 1080p camcorder lineup gains WiFi, enables geotagging and remote control via smartphone originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 10 Jan 2012 10:47:00 EST. After making their grand debut at this year's CEDIA Expo, JVC's line of Procision and Reference series projectors have finally begun marching out to market. The manufacturer announced the news this week, confirming that its array of seven new projectors are now available for purchase, with prices ranging from $3,500 to $12,000. All seven devices <strike>feature JVC's proprietary e-Shift technology, and</strike> are capable of projecting images in 3840 x 2160 resolution -- not exactly 4K, but still four times what you'll get with full HD. The Procision Series, including the DLA-X90R, DLA-X70R and DLA-X30, is geared toward the consumer market, while the Reference Series (DLA-RS65, DLA-RS55, DLA-RS4800 and DLA-RS45) is now available through JVC's Professional Products Company. For more details on pricing and availability, check out the full PR after the break.

Update: So, we got a little mixed up by the poorly worded JVC press release, but it looks like only the DLA-X90R, DLA-X70R, DLA-RS65 and DLA-RS55 actually sport the company's e-Shift tech.

Been holding out hope for a real-life holodeck? Well, looks like Japan's got wall number one out of four already covered. We kid, we kid. That Trekkie tech future's still a ways off, but recent prototypes like this 200-inch auto-stereoscopic 3D screen are bringing that illusive reality one step closer to our living rooms. Exhibited during CEATEC 2011, this 1920 x 1080 full HD display plays images at 60fps using an array of 57 projectors, and offers up viewing angles of 13 degrees. What does all of that mean for you? Well, the setup gives viewers a limited ability to peer around projected objects, so long as they stay within a 1.3m (about 4ft) area. It's yet another fruit of the collaboration between the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology and JVC Kenwood, except this one's headed for the realm of outdoor digital advertising. Home theater aficionados looking for a virtual entertainment solution can always opt for Sony's HMD, but that kind of defeats the glasses-free allure.
Continue reading NICT, JVC Kenwood team up for wall-sized 3D HD display, lets in your face advertising get literal (video)

NICT, JVC Kenwood team up for wall-sized 3D HD display, lets in your face advertising get literal (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Mon, 24 Oct 2011 16:49:00 EST. This curiously shaped fellow, with its long-barreled lens attached to a svelte body, might look familiar. It's JVC's GC-PX10, the camcorder that's also a camera. Or the camera that's also a camcorder. We're not quite sure, but here's what we do know: it'll shoot 1080p video at 60 fps, writing to SDXC or 32GB of internal memory. And it can also capture 8.3-megapixel stills at 60 fps without dropping out of video mode. If you've got the time and the inclination, you can switch into still-shooting mode, giving you full 12-megapixel pictures at 30 fps for two seconds. Exhausted by the possibilities yet? But wait, there's more. If slow motion's your game, you can fire away in 640 x 360 resolution -- at 300 fps -- for up to 2 hours. Now how much would you pay for such a plethora of pictorial options? Well, JVC's asking $900 when this ships later in October, so you've got some time to think about it.

Camera or camcorder?

JVC first brought 4K home with its $175k DLA-RS4000 and now it's back with four new models with greater than HD resolution at much easier to swallow prices. You'll note the term used is "with 4K precision", because strictly speaking these don't project over 4,000 pixels of horizontal resolution, coming in at a still impressive 3,840 x 2,160 resolution. While this is still about four times the number of a standard HD image, it's less than say, Sony's VPL-VW1000ES. Filling in the difference is JVC's e-Shift technology, which was originally developed for its 8K projector. It works by creating two 1080p frames, with one shifted down diagonally and alternated at 120Hz to create the effect.

The scheme is not far off from the old wobulation technology featured in some "1080p" DLPs once upon a time, but this time there are no moving parts as it's all being done electronically. Shown off with an HD resolution source the upscaled image was still impressively sharp to us, even up close, while it also handles native 4K feed. While JVC may not be winning on raw pixel count, what it does have is a serious price advantage. Sony indicated its hardware would be available for "less than $25,000" but the top of the line JVC has an MSRP of just $12k, while the cheaper model will be $7,999 when they all ship in November. Check out the press release after the break and images in the gallery for details, including those so rarely seen native contrast ratio measurements.
There's not much you can do to spice up speaker docks at this point -- they're pretty much old hat. But what if that dock allowed you to plug in your iPad and iPhone, or iPod simultaneously? Ah, now we have your attention. Slated to hit the land that begot Kurosawa in mid-summer, the JVC UX-VJ3 and UX-VJ5 make their iOS connectivity a folie à deux. Sporting an AM / FM tuner, video out and a PC input, these sleek connectors don't appear to part much from the typical feature set. It's the VJ5 that's the real standout here, with its six apartment-blending color options, USB port and ability to rip MP3s from a built-in CD drive. Sound swanky enough for you? We thought so, but with no announcement on North American availability, lusting audiophiles on these shores have a bit of a wait ahead of them. Check the source to get a glimpse of these iOS displays in their full color spectrum.
JVC's UX-VJ3 and UX-VJ5 speaker docks play (elegant) host to iPad and iPhone originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 06 Jul 2011 17:06:00 EST. New audio input capabilities are nothing new for JVC, but soon you'll be able to show off your guitar chops alongside whatever bands you choose to idolize -- so long as you're kosher with rocking a boombox atop your left shoulder, of course. The company has announced that the 2011 offering from its Kaboom line will showcase a guitar / microphone input (1/4-inch) with mixing capabilities to allow for gigs to be played from anywhere you darn well please. The RV-NB70 will have all the key ingredients of previous models, including an iPod dock (updated to be both iPod and iPhone compatible), a USB host that enables use of a mass storage device, an audio input and CD / radio playback. True to the original's design, this fellow features much of the same look while promising 40 watts of guitar soloing power. Your next box 'o fury can be had right now for $299.95, and if you're eager for an encore, the full presser (as well as a demo vid) is just past the break.
Continue reading JVC Kaboom adds a guitar input, dares you to get the band back together

JVC Kaboom adds a guitar input, dares you to get the band back together originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 16 Jun 2011 10:37:00 EST.
JVC promised back at CES that its new consumer-grade GS-TD1 3D camcorder would be available in March and, well, it's now available. While that may not be a surprise, JVC has shaken things up a bit with the pricing since its official announcement -- instead of the full $2,000 that was originally expected, the camcorder will now set you back "just" $1,699.95. That will buy you a pair of 3.32 megapixel CMOS sensor that record 3D video at 1080i, a 5x optical zoom (or 10x in 2D mode), 64GB of built-in flash memory along with an SDXC card slot for expansion, and a 3.5-inch LCD that lets you view your videos 3DS-style without any glasses. Head on past the break for the complete press release.

We missed JVC's GX-PX1 camera when it was at CES, just a concept at that point but now getting more real. Impress got a little hands-on time with the curious model that features an incredibly slim, compact-like body behind a hunky, camcorder-like lens assembly. It'll do 1080p60 at 36Mbps, writing to SDXC or 32GB of internal memory, can capture 10 megapixel stills and, if you don't mind stepping down to 640 x 360, will manage 300 frames per second. There's a tiltable LCD on the back and a 10x optically stabilized zoom lens up front. The camera is due to be released later this month, but JVC hasn't seen fit to tell us how much it'll cost just yet.
JVC GC-PX1 can't decide if it's cam or camcorder, does 1080p60 video and 10.6 megapixel stills originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 03 Feb 2011 08:52:00 EST. Are you looking for a smaller, less conspicuous means to listen to your jams and a way to record your freestyle battles? JVC has you covered with its new RD-R1 and RD-R2 compact boomboxes that weigh a scant 450 grams (one pound, for those using Americanized measurements). The devices come equipped with dual omni-directional mics and a microSD slot (with an included 2GB card) to record your rhymes at bitrates up to 192Kbps. Both models also have five-second countdown and clapper-style start functionality -- so you have time to get your 'Vogue' on and strike a pose before the music starts. Additionally, the RD-R2 adds a metronome feature and a 6.3mm mono jack for those who want to add an electric guitar to the mix. JVC hasn't released the price for the RD-R1, but with the higher-end R2 model retailing for ¥37,800 ($460) when it goes on sale in February, it ain't cheap. MotionX-GPS has been a solid choice in the iPhone and iPad navigation game for some time now, but only recently has started to stretch its legs a bit. The app now has compatibility with a series of JVC and Pioneer head units (listed out below) that enables full-screen 3D navigation. In this mode the mobile device basically turns in to a remote control with a simplified interface, with POI searching and of course media playback. Connectivity is not using the Terminal Mode standard, this works exclusively with the iPhone and iPad, and we're told that sadly the company has no plans on supporting any other platforms going forward. So, if you're not on iOS you'll just have to find your own way to wherever you're going.
Continue reading MotionX-GPS Drive exports full-screen nav on Pioneer and JVC head units, has love only for iOS (video)

MotionX-GPS Drive exports full-screen nav on Pioneer and JVC head units, has love only for iOS (video) originally appeared on Engadget on Sat, 22 Jan 2011 22:03:00 EST. JVC's new in-dash GPS navigation systems won't whisper soothing reassurances in your ear when traffic gets bad, but they can offer some easy listening (if you're into that sort of thing) for your daily commute. The KW-NT50HDT and KW-NT30HD, which JVC debuted at CES 2011, sport 6.1-inch displays and come equipped with HD radio and iPhone connectivity via USB. Using ClearChannel's iheartradio app, you can view song and artist information and scan channels from either the navigation device or the iPhone. The NT50HDT also comes with a free lifetime subscription to the Total Traffic HD+ Network, which provides data like traffic reports, news, and weather information. Both devices come equipped with WAAS navigation, map coverage of all 50 US states, as well as Canada and Puerto Rico, and voice guidance in English, French, and Spanish. The musically inclined navigators hit the market in March, with the NT30HD running $1,000 and the NT50HDT coming in at $1,200.
JVC KW-NT30HD / 50HDT navigation systems offer iPhone-controlled HD radio originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 18 Jan 2011 08:44:00 EST. At CES last week, the outfit's latest prototype was as small as we've ever seen, with that object shown here being capable of logging clips at 3840 x 2160 pixels. It's just barely bigger than the 1080p models already on store shelves, and it's equipped with new internal processors that are over twice as fast as the silicon used in the firm's current lineup. Sadly, we're no closer to learning a release date or price, but the results shown down in the source link have us all kinds of hopeful for something within the next dozen months. Right, JVC?
JVC's 4K camcorder inches closer to reality, getting smaller all the time originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 13 Jan 2011 15:15:00 EST. When the Philips' 56-inch 21:9 3D TV was released in Europe with no US ship date in sight, darkness fell over our home theater world. Then, Vizio announced its own 21:9 3D TV and we knew it was all going to be ok. They say when it rains it pours though, and now it's looking like JVC will release its own 50-inch 21:9 full HD 3D TV in the US sometime in the third quarter of 2011. Other details are scarce, but JVC's talkative CES booth attendant also mentioned the TV might be sold in varying sizes and might feature internet connectivity. The possibility of internet connectivity was also supported by a few screens teasing an integrated information bar, which appeared on the left-hand side of the screen without blocking HD content. Needless to say, we'll be keeping a close eye on this TV as more news emerges, and in the meantime bide our time dreaming of the ultra-wide CinemaScope-style movies we could be viewing in late 2011. Oh and if you're curious that's JVC's newly-announced TH-BC3 soundbar positioned right below it carrying a sweet paper iPhone 4.

Sound bars are nothing revolutionary, but JVC's newly announced TH-BC3 packs a few features worth mentioning. At the top of the list is the inclusion of an HDMI 1.4 enabled ARC (Audio Return Channel), which allows for simplified wiring since audio can travel in both directions through the HDMI cable. Additional connectivity options include one analog input and two digital audio inputs (optical and coaxial) plus a subwoofer pre-out. A slick push-open iPod / iPhone dock is another nice edition especially when combined with a composite video output. In terms of more general specs, the device features 30 watts per channel, a built-in FM tuner, and SRS StudioSound HD which is basically a branded complication of SRS TruSurround HD and SRS TruVolume. SRS TruVolume is designed to eliminate volume changes when switching sources while TruSurround HD can convert up to 6.1 channels of audio for playback over two speakers. JVC says the speaker will be available in February for $249. If that's above your budget, the TH-BC1 is essentially the same product minus the ARC and iPod dock and will be available this month for $149.

Continue reading JVC announces ACR-equipped TH-BC3 sound bar

JVC announces ACR-equipped TH-BC3 sound bar originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 06 Jan 2011 20:20:00 EST.
2011 is shaping up to be the year consumer-grade 3D camcorders take off. Now JVC is in the mix with its new GS-TD1 full HD 3D camcorder which it touts as a world first. Thanks to twin 3D HD GT lenses, two 3.32 megapixel CMOS sensors and a newly announced Falconbrid 3D image chip, the device can record both left and right streams of 1920 x 1080i simultaneously. It also features 5x zoom and 64GB of flash memory that can be expanded via an SD card slot. Besides the full HD mode, the camera supports the more common side-by-side format AVCHD 3D as well as AVCHD 2D. For better in-field review, the device packs a 3.5-inch glasses free 3D touch panel screen. Outside of 3D video, the camera is additionally equipped to record so-called 3D sound using BIPHONIC sound processing. Pricing is pegged at just under $2,000 and is expected to be available for purchase this March. For the full details check out the PR after the break.
We'd tell you these things are probably too easy to lose, but it probably matters not -- after all, you've already been suckered into buying one based on how insanely janky / adorable it is. JVC has just introduced the SP-A230 and SP-A1M portable speakers, with the former being shown above. That guy is a bar-styled stereo unit with a pair of 30mm drivers, a brain-melting 160mW x 2 of power and a 3.5mm auxiliary cable for connecting to any 'ole PMP. The A1M ships with a single 30mm driver and relies on a pair of AAA batteries, compared with a pair of AA batteries necessary on the larger A230. Pricing remains elusive, but you can expect 'em in a variety of colors this November... well, in Japan at least.
JVC introduces SP-A230 and SP-A1M: portable speakers for portable players originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Oct 2010 13:53:00 EST. Even outside of its budget busting $175k 4K projector, even JVC's "consumer" lineup of D-ILA projectors have remained outside the price range of most, but that changes with the DLA-HD250 line (pictured), which brings its LCoS technology home for less than $3,000. Its more typical $5k and up crowd will want to cast an eye towards the other projectors announced today at CEDIA 2010, most of which include 3D capability with IR synced active shutter glasses and preset 3D profiles to match whatever screen you happen to already be using. The lamp and optical technology has also been reworked for 2010 to provide plenty of brightness when you're watching 3D and up to a 100,000:1 native contrast ratio, and the more expensive models have even more settings for color management. Specs and pricing information are in the press releases after the break.

Gallery: JVC 2010 D-ILA projectors

Continue reading JVC intros new entry level D-ILA projector plus several 3D models

JVC intros new entry level D-ILA projector plus several 3D models originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 23 Sep 2010 10:04:00 EST. Hard to pinpoint what it is exactly about JVC's Wood Cone range of products, but the mere sight of 'em just makes a good 82.4 percent of life's problems disappear. Trust us, we looked it up. The outfit's latest is a new mini stereo that's just about perfect for college dorm rooms or studio apartments, particularly if the dweller happens to own an iPod or iPhone. As with just about every other compact boombox on the market today, this one too has an integrated iDevice dock on top, though there's a standard CD tray, USB port and auxiliary input in order to fetch tunes from a plethora of sources. It's available in four luscious colors over in the Land of the Rising Sun, but you'll be left to guess as to a price. Something tells us it'll be just a wee bit higher than whatever you're expecting.
JVC's EX-S1 'wood cone' mini stereo boasts iPod dock, soul soothing vibe originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 21 Sep 2010 03:19:00 EST. JVC's been a mainstay in the handheld camcorder realm, but along with Sony, Kodak, Sanyo, Samsung and just about every other consumer electronics company in operation today, it's recently decided to hop onboard the pocket camcorder bandwagon. Today, the firm is introducing a diminutive duo in the Picsio GC-WP10 and GC-FM2, both of which are capable of logging 1,920 x 1,080/30fps clips. There's also inbuilt image stabilization, an HDMI output, a 3-inch rear touchscreen, compatibility with EyeFi's WiFi-enabled SD cards and a time-lapse recording feature for speeding things up on the fly. The WP10 steps it up a notch by being encased in a waterproof enclosure, though the omission of an optical zoomer puts somewhat of a damper on things. The FM2 boasts a pop-out USB plug and the both of 'em tout an SD / SDHC / SDXC card slot; the WP10 also adds an MP3 audio recorder for good measure. Check the FM2 early next month for $179.95 and the WP10 in late September for $20 more, but be sure to visit that More Coverage link first for a translated review.
Continue reading JVC intros Picsio GC-WP10 and GC-FM2 1080p pocket camcorders

JVC intros Picsio GC-WP10 and GC-FM2 1080p pocket camcorders originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 24 Aug 2010 05:51:00 EST.
JVC's already rolled out a handful of new Everio camcorders this year, and it's just now refreshed the top of the line with its new HD Everio GZ-HM1 video camera. This one will naturally give you full 1080p video recording (along with 10-megapixel still images), and you'll get some reasonably high-end features all around, including a Konica Minolta lens with a 10x optical zoom, optical image stabilization, 64GB of internal storage, an SDHC card slot for further expansion, a mic input and headphone output, and a full range of manual controls. Head on past the break for a video overview courtesy of JVC, and look for the camera itself to be availability immediately for $1,199.95.

Ah, springtime. Ain't it beautiful? So beautiful, in fact, that you're apt to want to capture the flowers blooming and the kids playing around you, which is probably why JVC finally decided to ship the Everio GZ-HM550 that it announced back at CES. As far as handheld camcorders go, it's one of the better specced models on the market, touting a 10.6 megapixel CMOS sensor, 32GB of inbuilt storage, an SD / SDHC expansion slot, an integrated Bluetooth module (for controlling the camera's play, zoom and record functions via cellphone) and geotagging support when used with a compatible BT phone. Oh, and users can even sync up a Bluetooth headset in order to monitor the recorded sound or input voice recordings. You'll also get 1080p recording, a 16x zoom and the ability to snag 9 megapixel stills, all for the low, low price of $799.95. Go ahead -- step your YouTube game way up.
Continue reading JVC ships Bluetooth-packin', geotagging Everio GZ-HM550 camcorder

JVC ships Bluetooth-packin', geotagging Everio GZ-HM550 camcorder originally appeared on Engadget on Sun, 21 Mar 2010 10:41:00 EST. Too busy to deal with 8mm, DVDs or VHS tapes? Who isn't, right? JVC is looking to erase the tragic memories of converting your home videos to a format that someone could use by introducing the newest member of the Everio camcorder family: the GZ-HM340. Stocked with 16GB of internal Flash memory, a 20x optical Konica Minolta zoom lens, 1.37 megapixel CMOS sensor, image stabilization, one-touch upload to YouTube, face detection and an SD / SDHC expansion slot, this bad boy is set to land later in the month for a nickle under $500. Here's hoping it captures to something other than AVCHD, but our gut tells us this might be one dream that doesn't come true.
Continue reading JVC trots out Everio GZ-HM340 HD camcorder with 16GB of internal storage

JVC trots out Everio GZ-HM340 HD camcorder with 16GB of internal storage originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 02 Feb 2010 13:17:00 EST. Not sure why we've been putting this off, but we'll just come right out and say it: there's no doubt that this was the year for 3D at CES. We walked the show floor for countless hours and can tell you that just about everyone was showing something related to 3D at their booths. Most of these demos required a bit of a wait to experience them (thanks, hype), and everywhere you went people were talking about 3D. Granted, not all of that talk was positive, but it was talk nonetheless. Whether or not the technology will be seen in history as a success in the market place is obviously still up in the air, and much like a finely crafted episode of Lost, 3D at CES this year was littered with more questions than answers.

Gallery: 3D was everywhere at CES 2010

Continue reading 3D stole the show at CES 2010

3D stole the show at CES 2010 originally appeared on Engadget on Thu, 21 Jan 2010 13:15:00 EST.
For those about to dock, JVC has plenty iPod / iPhone sound systems coming out this year. First off, the company has unloaded a pair of shelf systems with dual iPod docks that each sport a USB port for mass storage playback and the requisite audio input, video output, CD player, and AM/FM receiver. Either get the UX-F3 (60 watts) for $200 when it comes out in May, or drop $400 for the 230 watt NX-D2 with Sound Turbo for "wall-shaking, bone shattering, low frequency performance." (Woah!) For nano fans, the SP-A130 is a compact powered speaker available in the four iPod nano 5G colors. Get yours in March for $29.95. If you spend a lot of time in bed (or wakin' up), the new RD-N1 ($130) CD player/tuner/iPod dock is one-piece tuner / CD player /clock radio with front facing audio input. Available in April. If you want to save a few bucks, the RA-P1 eschews the CD player and is priced for $60. Available in April. Last but certainly not least, the JVC Kaboom! is an iPod dock / boombox with USB for external media playback, CD player (with WMA and MP3 playback), FM tuner, and front audio input. Available this month for $300. PR after the break.

Continue reading JVC unveils a wide array of ominous iPod docks

JVC unveils a wide array of ominous iPod docks originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 16:19:00 EST. JVC's jumping in on the CES fun today with a whole slew of new camcorders, with the GZ-HM1 HD Everio leading the pack. This 1080p shooter offers up better-than-usual low light performance and camera-shake compensation. There's a 10.62 megapixel CMOS sensor within, though we imagine the $1,199.95 price tag will stun those who aren't looking for something fancy when it ships in March. The February-bound GZ-HM550 capture 1080p while offering up a 16x zoom, 32GB of internal flash memory, an SD / SDHC card slot, Bluetooth (for geotagging, naturally) and a $799.95 price tag. In case that guy is still too rich for your blood, JVC's offering up no fewer than eight other guys that range from $229.95 to $649.95, all of which should be out by next month. Peek those sources below if you're on the hunt for the nitty-gritty details.
JVC busts out GZ-HM1 HD camcorder, lots of other video capturing devices originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 08 Jan 2010 05:11:00 EST. Not that we haven't seen an elongated iPod sound system before, but we've definitely yet to see one as totally bodacious as this. JVC has just slung out its XS-SR3 iPod speaker dock, which -- like B&W's Zeppelin Mini -- can hold your iPhone / iPod vertically or horizontally. JVC claims this little trick better enables users to view videos in widescreen form, while the 5-watts of power are sure to blow your skin back when cranked to 11. Other specs include a bundled remote and two audio inputs (one analog, one digital), and if you're even mildly interested, you can check it out later this month for $149.95.
JVC's never been much on using wires to hook up its home theater systems, and for those not looking for mind-blowing 7.1 surround, these soon-available wireless soundbar setups might just satisfy your aural cravings without forcing you to run ungodly lengths of cabling around your den. The TS-BA3 ($549.95) is a dual wireless soundbar system that consists of a 280-watt amplifier, 5.1-channel surround rig (including a soundbar, wireless subwoofer and wireless rear speaker kit) and built-in surround decoding. You'll also find a single analog input, two optical digital inputs and support for Dolby Digital, DTS and Dolby ProLogic II surround signals. The TH-BS7 ($599.95) is engineered to mount alongside flat-panel HDTVs, with a 1.4-inch tall, ultrathin soundbar, an even slimmer wall-mountable amplifier / control unit and a wireless subwoofer. This one's packing 180-watts of teeth-rattling oomph and promises 4.1 sound with minimal consumption of floor space. Hop on past the break for the full release and detailed specifications.

Whether you want them to or not, there's a good chance you've got a family member or two (or more) that feel compelled to capture every single moment on video, including those times when all you're doing is sitting around watching previously recorded memories. That's just an inevitably we face each and every family gathering, and if you must endure, might as well get them the best possible fidelity, right? Then again, maybe you are that memory-capturing individual -- in either case, we think we've got a few suggestions to maximize your holiday enjoyment.

It's been a continual process of evolution with JVC's Everio line, each iteration getting more pixels and smaller bodies, and the latest entry is the best combination yet. It's the GZ-HD620, a full 1080p-recording camcorder (courtesy of a 1920 x 1080 backside illuminated CMOS sensor) that also sports a 120GB HDD in a package that weighs just 270g. Footage is shot through a 30x optical zoom lens and can also be written to a microSDHC card, though that internal storage will be good for 11 hours of footage at the maximum bit rate (24Mbps), and a vacation-encompassing 50 hours at the minimum (5Mbps). The cam is said to be shipping tomorrow in Japan at a price somewhere north of ¥100,000, which should equate to a few hundred over the $1,000 mark whenever it hits the Territories.
JVC's Everio GZ-HD620 crams 1080p sensor and 120GB storage into world's smallest HDD camcorder originally appeared on Engadget on Tue, 08 Dec 2009 08:58:00 EST. Sub-$200 Blu-ray players certainly aren't new -- heck, some guys have been doing it since the year 2008 -- but you'll never catch us kvetching about a little more competition. JVC has today introduced (in the briefest way possible, might we add) its newest Blu-ray player just ten months after deciding to play the BD game here in the States. The ultrathin (and "now available") XV-BP11 should slide into just about any AV rack, bringing Blu-ray / DVD playback, AVCHD support, HDMI 1.3, a USB socket and compatibility with a slew of audio formats. Curiously enough, the outfit doesn't bother to mention if this thing is Profile 2.0, but we're guessing (read: hoping) that it wouldn't do something as ludicrous as charge two bills for a Profile 1.1 deck in late 2009. Then again, we've seen zanier things go down...

Update: Ouch -- this thing is only Profile 1.1. Dud. We know, life's tough. You want to buy the latest ultraslim HDTV, but find that your home theater speakers will look monstrously bulky sitting alongside it. JVC wouldn't want to cause you such headaches, which is why it's trotted out the above pair of 31mm thin speaker satelittes -- known as the SP-FT1 in black and SP-FT2 in their white garb -- and the AX-FT amplifier squeezed in between them. While you should probably not expect Telos 5000-like output, the amp will deliver 80W of total output over 4 independent channels, and has support for Dolby Digital, DTS and AAC formats. Prices are expected to be around ¥24,000 ($267) for the amp and ¥20,000 ($223) for the speakers when their black iterations hit Japan later this month, with the willowy white option showing up in November.
