Jaguar tests self-driving cars that project their next move

Car makers have explored a number of ways to have self-driving vehicles signal where they're going, but they tend to rely on blinking lights or other codes that might not be easy to interpret in a hurry. Jaguar Land Rover might have something more intuitive: it has developed a system that projects an autonomous vehicle's direction of travel on the road ahead. The system casts a series of bars on the road to indicate when it's turning, setting off or stopping. The gap between the bars can expand or shrink to indicate changes in speed. You'll know if it's safe to cross the road without having to carefully watch a car's actions.

It's easy to look at a luxury automaker like Jaguar and declare 2018 the year the automotive industry caught up with Tesla. But like the Model X and Model S, the I-Pace is out of reach for most folks. It's great that people with large bank accounts can get behind the wheel of a vehicle that runs on electrons instead of dead dinosaurs. What's better is that 2018 showed that the rest of us can do the same thing.

Jaguar's automatic door could make cars more accessible

Amputees and others with accessibility needs might soon have an easier time hopping into cars. Jaguar Land Rover has created a 'mobility door' that uses a mix of current keyless entry tech and motion sensors to automatically open when you approach. You might only have to swing in when you're ready to drive. You can press buttons both overhead and on the infotainment system to open or close doors, and there's radar to prevent the door from smacking another car or a lamp post.

  • 2019 Jaguar I-Pace receives 234-mile range rating from the EPA

Jaguar's I-Pace is just getting into consumer's hands, and now the EPA has officially released its range estimates for the all-electric SUV. The vehicle has a range of 234 miles from its 90kWh battery pack, according to the EPA's tests. And compared to its all-electric competition, this range-to-kilowatt ratio is not great. But most people don't compare the I-Pace to the tiny Nissan Leaf, rather its main rival is the Tesla Model X.

The next wave of Formula E cars is finally trickling out, and it's clear they're considerably more exciting this season. Panasonic Jaguar Racing has unveiled the next generation of its racer, the I-Type 3, and it's a dramatic improvement even compared to Jag's last outing. The new machine is 25 percent more powerful than its predecessor without a significant change of weight, producing as much as 250kW (330HP) with a 0-62MPH time of 2.8 seconds. That's important when the league is introducing an "attack mode" that boosts the power to 225kW when a driver just has to overtake a rival.

The all-electric version of the E-type sports car Jaguar unveiled last year isn't just a concept or a special vehicle only available to royalty anymore. Jaguar has announced that it will offer Zero, the all-electric variant of the E-type, for sale. Yes, it will look just like the iconic 1960s sports car, except its engine and transmission will be replaced with a battery pack and an electric motor designed using I-Pace components. In fact, the automaker will convert existing six-cylinder E-types to EVs for customers at its Classic Works facility and will even keep the original components to make sure the process is reversible.

At an event before the New York Auto Show back in March, Waymo unveiled the first luxury vehicle it's adding to its nascent self-driving service's fleet: The new I-Pace, Jaguar Land Rover's answer to Tesla's Model X. The Alphabet company finally got its first handful of prototypes of the electric SUVs, and is testing them on Bay Area streets to gauge their performance for hardware and software design requirements. Eventually, the company will integrate the I-Pace into its forthcoming self-driving service, which is set to debut in 2020.

It's impossible not to compare the new Jaguar I-Pace with the Model X. They're currently the only members of the EV luxury SUV club. At least for now. BMW and Audi are both working on getting their electrified vehicles to market. But let's look at the differences between --not just two of the best EVs on the market -- but really two great vehicles overall.

You frequently see car manufacturers trying to break electric speed records on land, but where are the boats? Don't worry -- Jaguar, Vector and Williams feel the need for nautical speed. The trio have broken both the world and UK speed records with the Jaguar Vector Racing V20E, reaching an average speed of 88.61MPH on England's Coniston Water. While that may not sound fast, that's nearly 12MPH faster than the previous best, set all the way back in 2008.

A gentleman in a field peeks into the car and asks me to raise the height of the red First Edition I-Pace I'm driving then gestures towards a few feet of water ahead of me. "Don't go too fast, there are sharp rocks down there," he says. I've driven the car for a few hours already and am already a fan of its capabilities on paved roads and the luxury interior. Now I'm about to drive the crossover on a "surprise" off-road course and sure, why not. Let's do this.

Typically, when an automaker announces something completely different to its lineup, it involves months -- if not years -- of meetings with top executives, multiple focus groups and a lot of hand-wringing. For the upcoming Jaguar I-Pace, that wasn't the case.

Jaguar introduced its low-slung pure electric crossover way back in 2016 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. Since then, it keeps popping up at car events while the automaker slowly doles out information on it. While we wait for the vehicle to make its way into mass production, we were able to take a pre-production version for a spin at Jaguar's North American headquarters.

Waymo is adding a luxury vehicle to its fleet of self-driving test vehicles, the upcoming I-Pace EV. Plenty of cars will help you park, but the biggest challenge is frequently finding a spot in the first place -- it's no fun to circle the parking lot for 10 minutes. Fully autonomous cars can ultimately take care of this, but Jaguar Land Rover is demonstrating a feature that would help in the meantime. It recently expanded its public semi-autonomous testing in the UK to include a "self-driving valet" where vehicles both find open spaces and park themselves. The company pitches it as eliminating some of the drudgery of driving, letting you take the wheel when you'd genuinely enjoy it.

Pre-orders for the Jaguar I-PACE may have been available starting March 1st, but there was a problem: We didn't actually know how much the electric crossover SUV would actually cost in the US. Jaguar released that information today at the Geneva Motor Show, and it will start at $69,500.

After what seems like an eternity, Jaguar finally has pre-order information for its I-PACE crossover SUV, which looks to take on Elon Musk's Model X. The truck will be available to purchase starting today in a handful of trim options, but a delivery date wasn't available at press time. In the UK, the I-PACE starts at €63,495 or, roughly, $87,216. For context, the Model X we reviewed was priced at $132,000.

You'll be able to see Jaguar's answer to the Tesla Model X March 1st. What's more, when the production model debuts next month, the British luxury automaker's I-Pace electric crossover SUV will be able to hit an 80 percent charge in 45 minutes thanks to an available 100-kW DC fast charger, Autoblog writes. That's up from a 80 percent charge in two hours when the I-Pace was still just a concept at the LA Auto Show in 2016, using a 50-kW fast charger. There's also a connected app that enables you to, essentially, warm the car up while it's plugged in. Autoblog also reports that pre-orders go live during the reveal next month, as well.

Green tech will be everywhere in 2018

In 2017, clean power gathered unprecedented momentum. Multiple automakers launched entire families of EVs, including the most exciting one yet, Tesla's Model 3. The company also started pre-orders for the Solar Roof, a type of home photovoltaic panel that will make solar panel installations less ugly. With climate change problems mounting, national and local governments are pushing for more renewable energy and an end to fossil-fueled cars -- despite hostile moves in those areas by US President Donald Trump. Elected officials and the public want fewer gas-powered vehicles and coal plants, and more EVs, solar panels and wind turbines. That will ultimately benefit your health, wallet and environment, and you'll be less reliant on large energy and oil corporations, to boot.
