Diablo III's long-awaited PvP mode might require a great deal more patience on behalf of the playerbase -- perhaps eternal patience. At Gamescom, Game Director Josh Mosqueira was cagey about the mode ever seeing the light of day: "That's a really tricky question to answer. It's got to be Blizzard quality." Late last year, Blizzard scrapped its current plans for a PvP mode in favor of starting over. Mosqueira said this week that the team is still struggling to overcome several obstacles in creating a new PvP mode, including a limited number of team members for the project, a desire to see PvP at all levels, and a problem with converting the existing PvE gameplay to work for PvP. "In Diablo, the core mechanics are really built around one character fighting scores of monsters, right?" Mosqueira said. "There's a lot of control, a lot of AOE, and some of that stuff starts to not necessarily break down, but it starts to fray at the edges when you're actually now focused on two people, or four people."

  • Diablo III console port was almost a twin-stick shooter

Penny Arcade reports that the console version of Blizzard's Diablo III went through an interesting metamorphosis as it was ported over from the PC. A twin-stick approach was "one of the first prototypes," according to game director Josh Mosqueira. Ultimately, that particular control scheme didn't fly because of Diablo III's angled camera view. Also, "you can't blow stuff up or smash things if your thumb is on the right stick and the left stick," Mosqueira explained. For some time, the Diablo franchise has been touted by PC-gaming purists as one of the landmark reasons that PC gaming is superior to all others. Well, not anymore! Though Blizzard has made numerous statements that they were "seriously considering" a console version of the title, CM Bashiok tweeted today that the upcoming Diablo III would be making the jump to consoles, giving us our first official confirmation. Josh Mosqueira, who has worked on such titles as Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, is heading the charge as the console version's lead designer. Aside from those small details, however, we know absolutely nil about the title's console version (or to which consoles it will be coming, for that matter), but now that the news is out and about, we imagine that Blizzard will be making an official announcement very soon, so keep your eyes peeled and we'll bring you the latest as it comes. [Update: Blizzard is saying that Josh Mosqueira's tweet was not, in fact, official confirmation.]

  • Blizzard 'very, very serious' about console Diablo 3

Blizzard is still playing coy about Diablo 3 on consoles, talking about the possibility without actually formally announcing anything. During a Gamescom press conference, lead designer Josh Mosqueira said Blizzard is "very, very serious about bringing the Diablo 3 experience to the console." According to Eurogamer, he followed up by affirming that the company is "trying to build the best console team at Blizzard" with the express intent of working on Diablo. Last year, Blizzard said it was "exploring a Diablo-related concept." Earlier this year, CEO Mike Morhaime said the company was "doing an investigation" into the idea of Diablo on consoles. Then in June, it posted a job listing for a "PlayStation 3 Specialist" -- OK, that one's not particularly coy.
