  • PSVR mech battler 'Rigs' won't get any new content

Sony today confirmed that there will be no more DLC coming to multiplayer PSVR launch title Rigs. Following the recent closure of developer Guerilla Cambridge, it seems Sony has opted to cut short its initial plan for additional Rigs content. While the ambitious mech-based multiplayer shooter won itself a loyal fan base amongst early PSVR adopters, Sony's decision to close Guerilla Cambridge suggests that the game's sales weren't quite up to expectations. Despite the closure, Sony told Eurogamer that Rigs' online servers will be unaffected, with the game still scheduled to receive patches and other "community support".

  • 'The Order: 1886' is the latest in a long line of beautiful, boring games

The Order: 1886 isn't anything new, but man, is it pretty. Every review I've read mentions just how absurdly good-looking the PlayStation 4 exclusive is (out today); that praise is buried under heaps of valid criticisms regarding monotonous gameplay and hackneyed storytelling. Based on what I've played, I'm inclined to agree. Regardless of the pretty visuals, I've yet to be tasked with doing anything particularly interesting. The cover-based shooting is adequate, but I just can't shake the feeling that I've done it all before in better games. What's more, the narrative is incredibly dull: non-interactive scenes plod on for too long, helmed by characters I have zero connection with, spouting rote dialog that's difficult to decipher more often than not. Its just not very good. But it is pretty!

  • All but one of Sony's arguments against Killzone lawsuit dismissed

A federal judge has ruled that a class action lawsuit concerning the resolution of Killzone: Shadow Fall may proceed once the lead plaintiff files an amended complaint, according to a release from the US District Court. Lead Plaintiff Douglas Ladore's initial complaint, as reported in August by Courthouse News, alleges that Sony's claim of "razor-sharp 1080p native resolution" is false advertising, as Ladore claims Shadow Fall's multiplayer becomes "blurry to the point of distraction." Shadow Fall developer Guerrilla Games released a statement addressing the game's resolution, explaining that a technique called "temporal reprojection" is used in multiplayer, which "combines pixels and motion vectros from multiple lower-resoultion frames to reconstruct a full 1080p image." The statement added, "If native means that every part of the pipeline is 1080p then this technique is not native." In the recent ruling, US District Judge Edward Chen dismissed all but one of Sony's arguments - Chen agreed Ladore's negligent misrepresentation claim cannot stand in its current state, as Ladore did not present a non-economic loss (such as personal injury or property damage) suffered in relation to his purchase of Shadow Fall. However, Chen granted Ladore 30 days to file an amended complaint, in case he can "sufficiently allege that he or other putative class members suffered such non-economic damages." [Image: Sony]

When the PlayStation Network is next updated, those playing Minecraft on the PlayStation 3 will find two new skin packs available for purchase. One features koalas and cavemen, while the other focuses on the most famous faces of the PlayStation 3. According to the PlayStation.blog, the Battle And Beasts skin pack will allow players to dress as koala bears, cavemen, an ocotopus or a particularly angular Cleopatra. The other pack, simply titled "Skin Pack 1", is aimed at "hardcore PlayStation fans" and features Minecraft versions of Uncharted lead Nathan Drake, larcenous raccoon Sly Cooper, "folks from Heavy Rain" and "some Killzone dudes." We'd like to be more specific on who exactly will be representing Heavy Rain and Killzone, but neither Sony nor Minecraft creator Mojang offer further clarification. Likewise lacking from the announcement are the price points that will be attached to those two DLC skin packs, though territorial Sony devotees will be pleased to hear that Skin Pack 1 is exclusive to the PlayStation 3 incarnation of Minecraft. Killzone: Shadow Fall's first multiplayer expansion will launch in April with new weapons, abilities and game modes for the PS4 launch game. Titled "The Insurgent Pack," the expansion is headlined by the addition of the insurgent character class, which features hack and steal abilities. The assault, scout and support classes will also receive new abilities: Assault characters will gain access to a guard drone, scout players get an e-pulse emitter and support characters can send out a tactical echo emitter to stall infiltrating enemies. Insurgent Pack owners will also receive a single-player "elite mode," limiting them to three lives on hard difficulty in the Shadow Fall campaign, in addition to collectible crates that will spawn once per online match for a limited time. The DLC also includes the M82 assault rifle from Killzone 2 and Killzone 3, as well as the L512 SMG Pistol and Sta14 sniper rifle. Lastly, Sony announced that two of the free multiplayer maps for the game are now available to play on PSN. They arrive just as the game's multiplayer mode becomes free this week. • Killzone: Shadow Fall review: Goodbye, gray sky

We're rolling out PlayStation 4 review coverage all the way through the launch on Nov. 15. Check out more coverage here! This is not a review of futuristic architecture, thank God, but if it were I would have reams to write about Vekta City, the angular gem that serves as the heart and showcase of a big PlayStation 4 exclusive, Killzone: Shadow Fall. Its skyscrapers form an endless field of crystals and carbon, mantled in blue skies and fly-by lens flares. The game will let you admire the view from time to time, even with its finger extended and ready to prod – you've got some shootin' to do, remember. This is a peculiar kind of disappointment, because it speaks highly of the environmental fidelity in Killzone: Shadow Fall. The guns are the only thing approaching pollution in Vekta's pristine metropolis, which conveys far greater depth than is available when bullets are whizzing by. Then again, it's not as if "Killzone" is dishonest about its choice of genre – and the action is worthwhile when the shooting is as boisterous and tinged with tact as it is here. Your options in combat are grafted to your status as shadow marshall, a covert operative of the Interplanetary Strategic Alliance. Clandestine employment grants you access to the OWL, a cute but weaponized aerial vehicle that naps on your back. It also permits you to travel between Vekta City and New Helghan, a noxious, industrialized tumor of a city, fit for the Helghast refugees that lost a war and their planet.

  • PS4 struts its power in download-only Killzone: Shadow Fall trailer

If a picture is worth a thousand words, then a next-gen game trailer in 1080p at 60fps is at least five times as valuable. However, streaming such a clip without degrading the source material isn't exactly a cake walk, and that's why the latest teaser for Killzone: Shadow Fall is only available as a direct download from Sony. If you click over to the PlayStation Blog you can grab a video showing off the game's multiplayer that weighs in at a hefty 570MB for just over a minute of footage. Sony isn't the first to do this though, it's just the first to heavily publicize it: Respawn has 1080p 60fps footage of Titanfall for your downloading pleasure, too. If this is what it takes to get a better idea of how a game will actually look when we play it ourselves, we're all for it. However, we find it a little odd that Sony's file is in Quicktime format -- a codec that a PS3 can't play back natively.

  • Killzone Mercenary tacks on another massive patch

The good news is that Killzone Mercenary has received a new update designed to improve online functionality; the bad news is that this is yet another patch that will occupy greater than 1GB of your Vita's storage. Alongside improving the game's online multiplayer, the update is also designed to create a better distribution of spawn points in multiplayer maps. Additionally, the patch includes " a number of stability fixes, to address some of the crashes that have been reported." As with all Vita game patches, this update should be applied the next time players fire up Killzone Mercenary, assuming they have the requisite free space. If all of this sounds familiar, it should: Developer Guerrilla Cambridge released a 1.1GB update for Killzone Mercenary immediately following its September launch which was also aimed at improving the game's online functionality. As we mentioned in our review, lag has been a problem for Killzone Mercenary since its debut. Realizing how much of a hassle it can be to download patches of this magnitude onto a Vita handheld, Sony offers the following: "We're currently investigating solutions to reduce the overall size of the title and free up more of your valuable memory card space," states the PlayStation.blog. "We hope to be able to share more news on that work very soon. However, it seems unlikely to us that the overall size of the downloaded game, plus the patch, will ever be under 4GB."

You don't need to buy the whole Killzone Trilogy to get the remastered version of the original PS2 FPS. The PlayStation Blog has announced Killzone HD will be a PSN download, available on October 23 for $14.99.We certainly don't blame you for missing the game the first time around. It launched back in 2004, and there's just no way we would have cranked up our steam cars, made the trek into town, and handed over paper money to buy a game on a disc. So much effort!

If the PlayStation 3 marked your introduction to the Killzone series, it looks like you'll finally get a shot at trying the original. After spotting a listing for the first Killzone on the ESRB, Game Informer has confirmed with Sony that the 2004 Helghast extermination simulator is indeed headed to PSN. The title will be a port of the original PlayStation 2 Killzone, so we wouldn't expect any extra bells or whistles. Killzone will hit PSN on January 24 for $10.

  • Rumor: Sony working on a Smash Bros-esque fighter featuring Sony all-stars

The hat of "Sony Mascot" has been worn by many, many different critters and folk since the days of Crash Bandicoot and, uh, Croc. In fact, Sony's stable of lovable household names is so fully stocked that they've decided to pit their creations against one another to determine who lives and who dies. Okay so, that last part might be a little hyperbolic, but the rumor mill is operating at full capacity over Title Fight, a Super Smash Bros.-ish cross-franchise brawler reportedly in development at SuperBot Entertainment, according to The Paul Gale Network. If rumors are to be believed, the game will feature a cast of Sony-console specific characters like Nathan Drake, Sweet Tooth, Sly Cooper, that guy from Killzone and Fat Princess. Fights will take place in various Sony related locations such as Sandover Village or a golf course from Hot Shots Golf. The gallery of images below, which shows Sweet Tooth, a blank female form that may or may not be Heavenly Sword's Nariko and a debug screen that mentions Kratos, were tweeted (and subsequently deleted) by SuperBot Entertainment's senior level designer Chris Molina. Apparently, this hullabaloo is also what that franchise-rich teaser trailer from September was all about, which would also indicate the inclusion of Parappa the Rapper, as well as a representative from FOXHOUND. If all this pans out, Title Fight will be the latest in a long, proud history of SCEA-published fighting games like Battle Arena Toshinden and Cardinal Syn. We'll keep our ear to the ground for more as this story develops.%Gallery-140432%

  • Next Killzone in the works at Guerrilla Games, new IP still in development

The latest issue of Edge Magazine (via CVG) reveals that Killzone developer Guerrilla Games is working on -- what else? -- a new installment in its PS3-exclusive shooter franchise. Actually, "what else" may not be a fair question to posit: The studio is still working on the new IP announced at GDC Europe last August, which is being spearheaded by Killzone game director Mathijs de Jonge. The identity of the new franchise isn't known, though studio founder Adrian Smith explained that members of the Killzone team will be lending their support throughout the game's development. We think the appearance of red-eyed antagonists is a lock.
