As a gesture of thanks to the community, Lead & Gold: Gangs of the West developer Fatshark has deployed a free update, which notably adds the "Appendoah Valley" map, for the game on PC -- sorry, no timetable for PS3 right now, Fatshark says. Aside from sounding like a medical procedure, Appendoah Valley supports all game modes. Lead & Gold and the new map are currently part of a free-to-play weekend promotion on Steam, which ends Monday, March 28 at 1PM ET. For the full list of changes in the latest update, mosey on past the break, pardner. %Gallery-119693%

PlayStation Plus subscribers growing weary of the DC Universe Online beta will be glad to read that a new trio of free games awaits them in the coming calendar year. PSN multiplayer game Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West, PlayStation classic Spyro the Dragon, and PSN Mini Pipe Madness will unlock for free to all PS Plus members as of January 4, 2011. A handful of discounts will also become available, as well as a duo of featured themes and avatars. For those of you not yet enjoying December's PS Plus spoils, you've got until the aforementioned January date to snag 'em -- Dead Nation for $12 instead of $15? Yes, please! That said, at this point, you'll likely be the third or fourth person queuing up to speak with Superman in DCUO, but hopefully it'll be worth the wait.

Happy holidays, everybody! Oh, you didn't hear? This weekend is apparently "Frontier Weekend," according to Steam. We suggest you celebrate accordingly: By donning your raccoon-skin cap, boarding up in your log cabin and playing some Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West and Shattered Horizon, both of which are free to play on the gaming platform starting later this evening and running until Sunday. If you decide you'd like to continue playing the two multiplayer-centric titles once this esteemed holiday has come and gone, you can purchase both titles this weekend in a single bundle, at the significantly reduced price of $12.49. Or, in frontier currency, two pounds of rabbit meat and a medium-sized wagon wheel. What a bargain!

  • XBLA Lead and Gold isn't happening, says Paradox CEO

    by

    08.03.2010

In a recent conversation with Paradox Interactive's Fredrik Wester, the CEO told Joystiq that while he'd like Lead and Gold to shoot up Xbox Live Arcade, in addition to PSN and Steam, he doesn't think it's going to happen. "It seems like we have to put it on the backburner," Wester said. "We're not really putting any more effort into releasing on XBLA, so I would say if you want to play the game, you should do it on PC or PSN, because we're not really sure that we can ever release it on XBLA. Or that we're ever gonna release it on XBLA. It's unfortunate, but you know, things happen. We love XBLA and would love to be on it, but with Lead and Gold, we just have to move on." And that's unfortunate, as Wester (no, not Wesker) said DLC is in the pipe for L&G, and early issues with lag in the game have been amended. He's also excited for the next console release that Paradox has planned: Magicka. "When I first played it, I was like, 'Shit, this is a great game!' So we put more effort into it and we're gonna make it into a really good project," Wester told us. While the game is built using XNA and intended for an XBLA release, Wester's not sure where it'll end up (though he offers up the XBL Indie Marketplace as another possible destination). Wester also teased something new coming from Paradox -- Paradox Connect -- a service he recently talked about with Gamasutra. While he wouldn't get too specific, he did tell us, "Steam has a few elements which Paradox Connect is gonna have as well, and a few other services do as well. Stuff that gives the players more options to connect with each other and gain bonuses online." So, it's DRM then? "The first thing people said was 'Oh! It's DRM! It's DRM!' And I'm like 'Come on, people! It's not DRM.'," Wester corrected us, laughing.

Fatshark is offering an enticing deal to try and lasso players into checking out its Wild West shooter, Lead and Gold. If you've been running into a significant number of unexpected problems during your nightly Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West matches on the PS3, a recent patch might just be the remedy you're looking for. See, right there in the update's notes, it promises "an elimination of unexpected problems." You were just talking about how much you hated those. More specifically, the patch fixes a few tiny annoyances which appeared in a few game modes, like a bug that made it difficult to grab loot sacks while playing "Robbery" -- a mode which focuses largely on the grabbing of loot sacks. Apparently, there's been an overwhelming amount of demand from the Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West community for a map that features a locomotive. We can understand why --- trains are inherently pretty rad, especially when placed in an online shooter battleground. Developer Fatshark has delivered said (stationary) setpiece in a new map called "Jacob's Bridge," part of a recent update to the PC version of Lead & Gold. The update also adds the new "Demolition" mode, which we don't know much about, except that it predominantly features the use of volatile powderkegs, and that's just fine by us. Check out a trailer for the new train-centric map after the jump.

Fatshark has managed to circle the wagons and issue some repairs to its Western shooter, Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West. Not only has each individual class received tweaks -- which in turn affect the strength of the proximity-based Synergy system -- but a variety of features have been added to the game, including in-game voice chat and the ability to invite friends from the pause menu. Lead designer Mårten Stormdal says the input of the community has been integral in shaping the game. "We've listened to the players' feedback and their input has been invaluable. We'll keep talking to them as we add dedicated servers and other improvements in the near future." Lead and Gold: Gangs of the Wild West is currently available on Steam and PSN in Europe. It will launch on the North American PSN on May 4.

Click to be lead to larger image Aside from the headline above, we're going to try our very best to use as few Old West-related puns as we can in giving you the news that publisher Paradox Interactive today announced an April 22 European PSN release date for its upcoming, third-person online shooter, Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West. Apparently, the game won't be moseyi .... er, arriving in other territories until some time "soon" after (we followed up with Paradox for a US release date and were told one isn't available at this time). We have to imagine that cowpo ... damnit! ... gamers on PC are assuredly sneering at us right now, given their two-week lead time. But we'll see who's got the last laugh when we install Linux on this PS3! Oh ... right. %Gallery-84320%

  • Interview: Fatshark CEO confirms Lead & Gold PSN release, DLC plans

    04.01.2010

We had a pretty good time with Paradox Interactive's upcoming downloadable shooter, Lead and Gold, at GDC earlier this year. We had a chance to talk to developer Fatshark CEO Martin Wahlund, who not only talked about creating a download-only shooter, but also confirmed a PS3 release and plans for downloadable content. Why make this a download-only game, instead of a fully featured retail game? Marin Wahulund, Fatshark: Our aim was to create an easily accessible game with a low price, so doing a digital release seemed like a good fit. We also wanted to make a game that we will continue to support post-release. It is easier to do that when your players stay connected. There are many online-only multiplayer shooters coming to download platforms. Any concerns that the market may be oversaturated? Of course that is always a fear. You are always nervous when you release a game, but I do think that you get fantastic value in our game in terms of the low price with the high quality of the game. The game is also set in the Wild West and there aren't many good shooters in that setting. In addition, the heavy focus on teamplay and 3rd person view makes it more unique. %Gallery-84320%

  • Hands-on: Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West

Multiplayer first-person shooters are a dime a dozen lately, meaning Lead & Gold: Gangs of the Wild West has a lot to prove for itself. The gameplay is definitely fun, but it's clear that its main selling point is the format. As a downloadable game (confirmed for PC, planned for XBLA and PSN), it's one of the most polished multiplayer shooter experiences available in the space. Priced at $15, Paradox Interactive's shooter is competing against the likes of Battlefield 1943. Like DICE's shooter, the production values are impressive and highlight by colorful, animated visuals. The style is reminiscent of Team Fortress 2, with the characters donning an almost psuedo-cel shaded look. Combined with the Wild West theme, it can oftentimes look identical to Valve's shooter. Of course, there are far worse places to look for inspiration. In many ways, the gameplay is also similar to Team Fortress 2. There are four classes for players to choose from, and each features distinct and valuable traits. The primary difference between the four classes is their range: some classes are equipped with shotguns, best for short range fighting, while the requisite sniper is obviously equipped to handle long distances. Beyond their weapons, each class is equipped with a special ability. One can throw dynamite, while another can "mark" an enemy. (Marked enemies take twice the normal rate of damage.) %Gallery-84320%
