Microsoft's $400 Legendary Edition Xbox 360 bundle was "officially" announced today during SDCC, despite having been ousted yesterday by IGN. As we originally heard, the bundle includes a remarkably fancy transparent Halo 4-themed 360 with blue lights and bespoke Halo sounds, two matching transparent controllers with matching blue lights, vouchers for both in-game and Avatar DLC, a headset and (of course) a copy of the game. What we didn't know, however, was that snazzy Halo 4-edition controllers, blue LEDs and all, will also be sold on their own at $59.99 a pop, starting Oct. 21. Both controller and console are available for your inspection in the gallery below.Update: The controllers sold separately differ in design from the controllers packaged with the bundle; the wording of this article has been updated for clarity.%Gallery-160402%

  • The Road to Mordor: Breaking down Riders of Rohan's pre-purchase

This past week or so has been absolutely nuts with all the new information flooding in about this fall's Riders of Rohan. We've gotten confirmation about the release date, the expansion website, pricing information for the different expansion pack editions, a partial feature list, an official FAQ, word of a forthcoming instance cluster, and a first look at the mounted combat system. Expansions always rile up the Lord of the Rings Online faithful, and I'm pretty jazzed to see whether Turbine can pull off what's probably the most epic addition to the game since Mines of Moria. I'm going to save analysis of the expansion as a whole until next week because today I want to dive into the slightly confusing morass of pre-purchase options and pricing to see what's worth pursuing -- and what might be worth ignoring.

  • Reviewing the SteelSeries WoW MMO Legendary edition gaming mouse

SteelSeries makes some cool WoW-inspired gaming peripherals, and the World of Warcraft MMO gaming mouse is no exception. The newest iteration in the lineup is the Legendary Edition, a brand new design that takes what worked from the previous versions of the MMO gaming mouse and iterates on core concepts, resulting in an overall sturdier build and better product. The new mouse fits more comfortably in my hand than the old MMO gaming mouse did as well as provides two new thumb buttons that I didn't anticipate liking as much as I did. As usual, I tested out each peripheral for review for no less than a week of actual WoW gameplay and learning, trying out the gear on my main as well as new alts created for the express purpose of learning with a new peripheral from scratch. Here's my week with the SteelSeries WoW MMO Legendary edition gaming mouse.

  • Halo: Reach Legendary Edition gets developer commentary

Setting the price at $150, Bungie claims to give you the most complete Halo: Reach experience possible in the game's Legendary Edition, shipping next week. Adding to the sculpture and other various material goodies included in the package, Bungie recently revealed another piece of content: "two full hours of exclusive, behind-the-scenes campaign commentary covering unrevealed aspects of Halo: Reach's production." Creative director Marcus Lehto and crew commentate an entire campaign playthrough -- "judiciously edited to excise the downtime" -- and show off Reach "from concept to cutting room floor." Additionally, Bungie pointed out in its weekly update that it won't be punishing folks for playing Reach early (legitimate copies, at least) -- but there will be a credit reset at launch. This means that those of you lucky enough to secure an early retail disc shouldn't get too attached to that sweet helmet or those shiny shoulder pads -- they'll disappear come September 14. Bungie also warns early players that the multiplayer is still in a "test" state, meaning various issues may pop up (matchmaking, credit acquisition, and the daily challenge are all said to be "running at less than optimal levels"). Even so, if you've gotten an early copy, you can enjoy the single-player campaign for the next week.

  • Halo: Reach to stretch across 3 retail editions [update]

    04.21.2010

A series of tips and a report from a reputable Cheap Ass Gamer indicate that there might be three retail editions of Halo: Reach offered when the game ships later this year: a standard edition, a limited edition and ... the "Legendary Edition." We'll give you a moment to catch your breath after dropping that bombshell on you. Ready? Good. An alleged Best Buy ad, to be circulated next week, reveals that the retail packages will range in price from $60 for the standard game to $150 for the Legendary Edition, with the "limited" iteration of Reach falling in at $80. As you might imagine, the standard version supposedly comes with just the game itself, while the limited version is said to also include a "special limited edition case, collectibles and in-game armor," according to the ad. The $150 option allegedly contains all of the contents of the limited edition, in addition to even more "unique packaging" and in-game armor, plus a "Legendary Noble 6 Sculpture." When asked for comment, Microsoft issued its standard response: "We don't comment on rumor or speculation." We'd suggest to those of you pining for Reach's Legendary Edition to wait a bit -- we hear these things tend to eventually drop in price to something much, much more reasonable. If you just can't wait, though, Best Buy, and no doubt other major retailers, will reportedly begin accepting your pre-orders next week. Update: Microsoft has confirmed the trio of Reach retail editions. [Thanks Lgndryhr and everyone else who sent this in!]

When Halo 3 hit store shelves last year the ultimate fan option was the Legendary edition which, along with the game, included a replica of Master Chief's signature helmet. The problem was the entire collection was lambasted for being a touch on the gigantic size.DeviantART user 2twoproductions must have had space issues with her gaming setup because today she showed off her latest work, a mini . The mini-Legendary edition includes the famous helmet, game holder, cardboard box and even the slip cover. With the size of this helmet we wonder just how big this artist's cat is.[Thanks to Amy for the fantastic artwork]

In an offer that can be filed under the holy-wowzaz-that's-clearance-priced-Mr.-Clearance-man file, Walmart is offering the Halo 3 Legendary edition for $59.82. Which is like half off of retail! The Legendary edition is available in-store or online where you'll have to pay shipping and tax. If you're one of the sixteen people who own an Xbox 360 and didn't purchase Halo 3 then here's your chance to make up for your lack of Halo 3 launch day purchasing and pick up the Legendary Edition for the cheap. Amazon.com's Deal of the Day is none other than the cat helmet edition otherwise known as the Halo 3 Legendary Edition for $109, which is $20 off the retail price. And since the Legendary Edition is supposedly uber limited and uber wanted, we're not how long Amazon.com will have these bad boys in stock. But then again, if they were so limited and nearly sold out then why are they on sale? Hmm, potato, potatoe go get your Legendary Edition and officially take your name off the none Halo 3 owners list. You'll be glad you did.[Thanks, Phillip]

  • Buy Halo 3 Spartan helmet for only an arm!

Somehow, someone is selling a Halo 3 Legendary Edition Spartan helmet on eBay months before the game releases. Seller kira_sendo supposedly purchased the helmet from a Microsoft employee who received the helmet via his connections within' the company. And we believe the story, because the listing looks legit enough. But look at that pricetag! Currently, the bidding is up to $166 which doesn't include the game, just the plastic Spartan helmet. We've heard plenty of grumblings about the Legendary Edition's pricetag before, but this takes the whole expensive helmet argument to a new level. No thanks, we'll pass on this and wait until September.[Via XYBA Podcast]

Last night's Bungie Weekly Update helped clarify the multiple game disc confusion when yesterday's official box art hit the web. Frankie stated that the collector's edition will not include three discs and that the press photo was not only mislabeled, but wrongly included the third disc. What will be included in the collector's edition is two Xbox 360 discs both only playable on the 360; the Halo 3 game and bonus content. The third DVD, which can be played on any DVD player, is real and has bonus content but is only included in the legendary edition. Also announced is that the collector's edition special art book will indeed be included on the legendary edition, but in digital form on the third bonus disc. The good news is that it'll include more art that is not included in the hard bound book. Phew! Yes, it's a little confusing and that's why we've posted a complete rundown of what's going to be in the standard, collector's, and legendary editions after the break.

Well, you're in luck, because Destroyer over at the Spanish Overpal forums posted some of the best Halo 3 Legendary Edition helmet shots we've seen yet. Bungie has posted an article explaining all the detailed planning that went into the production of the $130 Legendary edition of Halo 3. Planning for the Legendary edition has been underway since June of 2005, when discussions were first held concerning what sort of molding method to use to form the helmet. In the end Microsoft chose injection molding and gave the project to one of its largest keyboard manufacturers in China. That's right, your fancy schmancy helmet is coming from a keyboard factory. According to the article, once peak capacity is reached at the factory, a new helmet will be produced every 12 seconds! Most of the article centers on the planning of the Legendary edition, but there are several photos of the manufacturing process sprinkled throughout as well.Die-hard Halo fanatics may hit the "read" link to read the full article.

While Bungie's Weekly Update had a slew of goodies for you to get excited about Halo 3, they also touched on the $30 increase in price for the Legendary Edition. They more or less apologized for the misleading initial price point, and assured us that the final product will be definitely worth every penny, especially to those who are die hard Halo fans. They even revealed that the Legendary Edition is limited enough to warrant Bungie staff pre-ordering their own copies, and that each one is individually numbered. So, with that coming from them, does it change your opinion on the thirty dollar discrepancy?
