The World of Warcraft is an expansive universe. You're playing the game, you're fighting the bosses, you know the how -- but do you know the why? Each week, Matthew Rossi and Anne Stickney make sure you Know Your Lore by covering the history of the story behind World of Warcraft. 2012 was a bit of an odd year for World of Warcraft. While yes, we did see the successful launch of Mists of Pandaria, that didn't happen until September. Prior to that? There was a whole lot of nothing in game. Patch 4.3 came out in November of 2011, which meant that players had nothing new or exciting to look at for nine months -- an astonishingly long period of time. So why bother doing a top 10 lore developments for 2012, you may ask? Because the moment Mists of Pandaria hit live servers, we were inundated with so many different lore developments, changes and tweaks that there is more than enough material for this list. Oddly enough, although we definitely spent far more time this year entrenched in Cataclysm, it already feels like there's been more time spent in Pandaria overall. And the changes made to lore development between Cataclysm and Mists are something we should pay attention to, because they spell the beginnings of a very bright future for further Warcraft lore.

If you've been keeping track, you've seen Li Li Stormstout's trek across Pandaria unfold piece by piece. Now, it reaches the Townlong Steppes, with Li Li and her monk escort Min reaching the Serpent's Spine, the great wall that prevents the residents of the Steppes and the Dread Wastes to the south from crossing into settled lands. What do they find atop the wall, and how does it all lead up to the final chapter of our story? You'll have to read it to find out, of course. As always, you can pick up the new wallpaper for the chapter, and I have to say it may be my favorite so far. Mists of Pandaria is here! The level cap has been raised to 90, many players have returned to Azeroth, and pet battles are taking the world by storm. Keep an eye out for all of the latest news, and check out our comprehensive guide to Mists of Pandaria for everything you'll ever need to know.

If you're reading along at home (or wherever you like, what with your modern devices) you'll remember that Li Li Stormstout last wrote about her visit to Kun-Lai Summit. The yaungol attacks have driven many pandaren out of the mountains and through the recently opened gateway into the Vale of Eternal Blossoms, and so Li Li takes her travels down into the Vale itself alongside refugees Buwei and his son Little Fu. Between seeing the refugees settle into Mistfall Village and discovering that her uncle Chen has passed beyond the Serpent's Spine and into the Dread Wastes themselves, Li Li's sojurn in the Vale is hardly the end of her adventures. Will she follow Chen's directive to wait for him on the battlements of the ancient wall separating the Vale from the mantid hordes, or will her thirst for excitement lead her into mortal danger? As with previous installments, you can download Li Li's Travel Journal in pdf format. Mists of Pandaria is here! The level cap has been raised to 90, many players have returned to Azeroth, and pet battles are taking the world by storm.
