  • Delta to equip flight attendants with Nokia Lumia 1520s

The Lumia 820 just reached EOL at Delta. The airline's 20,000 flight attendants will be stepping up to the significantly larger Nokia Lumia 1520 "phablet" come this fall, matching the larger form factor that AA currently has in the sky. The 1520s will include flight manuals and can support on-board sales, letting employees process credit card payments on the fly. The move will also enable flight attendants to ditch the 500-page, five-pound manuals they're used to bringing on board, saving Delta more than $1 million each year in fuel and printing costs. Meanwhile, pilots are still on track to receive Microsoft's Surface 2 -- that process should be complete by the end of 2015. The 1520 will make its way on board much sooner, though. Delta is expecting to issue the Windows Phone 8.1 handsets beginning in October, with all FAs expected to have one in hand by the end of the year.

  • Windows Phone 8.1 does Miracast media sharing, but most devices won't cut it (updated)

Windows Phone 8.1 includes many, many upgrades, not the least of which is Miracast media sharing; it should be easier than ever to send content to your TV and other gadgets. However, it's now very likely that you'll have to upgrade to a newer phone to get that convenience -- Microsoft's Joe Belfiore says that most existing Windows Phone 8 devices can't handle Miracast. A recent flagship like the Lumia 1520 might cut the mustard, but the executive isn't certain that it will work. The limitations are no doubt unfortunate if you were hoping to unlock Miracast through a software update, but they'll at least give you a good excuse to upgrade an older handset. Update: While Belfiore's statements are still noteworthy for how they apply to the larger ecosystem, Nokia has mentioned that the Lumia 1520, 930 and Icon will support Miracast.

Brits who've been yearning for the Nokia Lumia 1520 will soon get their chance. The supersized Windows Phone is now due to reach the UK on December 6th, when it will be available through O2 at retail and Vodafone through the web. Third-party retailers like Carphone Warehouse and Phones4u will also stock the 6-inch flagship. While the exact pricing will vary, Vodafone will sell the phone for £80 when it's attached to a £38 per month plan and a 2-year contract; it will be available for free if you subscribe to a beefy £47 plan. The 1520 will undoubtedly be one of the more expensive handsets in the country, then, but it may be worthwhile for those who want one of Nokia's most powerful devices.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 review: the best Windows Phone device yet

Windows Phone has never looked this good. The latest update to Microsoft's mobile operating system, known as Update 3, added support for 1080p displays, large smartphone screens and state-of-the-art processors. And now, these features are finally showing up on actual hardware. The first device to tick off all these boxes is the Nokia Lumia 1520, a 6-inch flagship with all of the trimmings we've been waiting to see on a Windows Phone device for three years now. Because high-end Windows Phones have been limited to whatever specs Microsoft officially supports, we've felt that Nokia's flagships didn't differ enough in specs from the lowest-end Lumias to justify the enormous price difference. At least, they didn't until now. The Lumia 1520 is the first top-of-the-line Windows Phone device that brings the best possible components. So, what's WP8 like on hardware that isn't behind the times? Let's find out.

After an early leak on Microsoft's store, we've finally got the official launch info for Nokia's Lumia 1520. The first Windows Phone 8 device with a 6-inch, 1080p display goes on sale November 22nd, and costs $200 on contract for AT&T customers. If you're ready to dive into its new three-column start screen, quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, 16GB of built-in storage (expandable via microSD and a 32GB edition is coming in the "near future," but you'll still live without the international version's wireless charging) and other high end specs, Microsoft and AT&T are both offering a few specials for pre-orders. The Microsoft store teases $70 worth of app store credit, free flip cover and a free copy of Halo: Spartan Assault, while AT&T's offer packs in $20 of app store credit, the game, and 50GB of cloud storage in AT&T's locker service. The black, red and white versions will be available at launch, with yellow due "later this year."

You like your Windows Phones big, right? If so, you'd best put in your preorder for the Lumia 1520, because Nokia's six-inch smartphone will arrive on AT&T's frequencies in just a few weeks. According to Microsoft's own store listing, it'll also come priced at $199, and you'll be able to choose between black, white, yellow or red color options to flank the 1080p display (a first for WP8). Nokia's gone for the middle PureView specification, with a 20MP sensor capable of lossless digital zoom alongside all those requisite imaging software bells and whistles. This time around, however, there's expandable storage alongside the 16GBs of built-in space, meaning plenty of room for photography purists to save shots in RAW format. The rest of us can simply fill those extra gigs by shooting even more photos and video. Update: Looks like Microsoft jumped the gun. According to Computer World, the company said that it published the product page prematurely, but promises to honor any early pre-orders prompted by the flub. [Thanks, Suraj]

This latest nugget of news out of Nokia's big event in Abu Dhabi should be of particular interest to mobile photographers. According to @tnkgrl, aka our buddy Myriam Joire, the phone manufacturer will be bringing RAW image support to its flagship Lumia handsets, the 1520 and 1020. This will allow them to take 20MP or 41MP photos (respectively) with zero compression -- allowing far greater control over exposure, color and other settings in your photo editor of choice. The file sizes will no doubt be unwieldy compared to regular JPEGs, especially for 1020 owners who can't expand their storage (the new 1520 fortunately has a microSD slot), but we reckon the extra control ought to be worth it. Update: Now confirmed by Nokia camera developer, Juha Alakarhu.

  • Nokia's Refocus Lens camera app promises infinite depth of field control

    by

Nokia's just announced a new camera app called Refocus Lens at Nokia World that brings a Lytro-like variable depth of field to Lumia cameras. Likely to be the fruits of that Scalado purchase from a while back, it'll let you change the focus of a snapshot using "clever algorithms" while adding "brilliant splashes of color" to images via a feature called color pop. Nokia also said that images will be 5-megapixels in size and that you'll be able to use the refocusing option while in Facebook. The app will debut on the Finnish company's new flagship Lumia 1520 and trickle down at a later date to older devices like the Lumia 920 and 925. However, Nokia hasn't decided if the app will be available for lower-numbered Lumias like the 520 and 620 -- or any other Windows Phone devices, for that matter. We're still finding out more details from Nokia, so stay tuned! Update: Nokia is now showing a dedicated Refocus site with a sample photo to play with. You can also check out a clickable sample embedded after the break. Update 2: We've now added a video demo of the app, courtesy of Samuli Hänninen, Nokia's VP of of software program management for smart devices. It's surprisingly similar to the DigitalOptics' MEMS camera demo we saw back at Mobile World Congress earlier this year, but Nokia confirmed that there's no link between that and its own post-capture refocus technology.

  • Nokia Lumia 1520 hands-on: the weighty new flagship is here

Don't act like you didn't know this was coming. Nokia has finally removed the see-through shroud covering its latest high-end device, known as the Lumia 1520, at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi. Thing is, it's not like any Windows Phone you've gazed upon before -- it's a top of the line smartphone with Microsoft's third WP8 update and many of the best specs you can get. Not only is it the first 6-inch 1080p smartphone to run Windows Phone OS, it's also the first that's powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 800 SoC (a quad-core chipset clocked at 2.2GHz). Nokia aims to sell the flagship for $750 unsubsidized later this year and it comes in four color options: red, white, black and yellow. The first two are glossy, while the latter two come with a matte finish. If you've used or seen most Lumia devices in the past, the phone's overall design will not come as a surprise; it's dressed in Nokia's traditional unibody polycarbonate, though it looks like a Lumia 920 that got flattened with a mallet. That's not a bad thing, since it's 8.6mm thick (with the exception of the 1520's camera bump, which reminds us of the 925), but thanks to its 85.4mm-wide chassis, you'll need the phone to be as thin as possible to even think of using this as a one-handed device; it's three millimeters wider than the HTC One Max (and six millimeters wider than the Samsung Galaxy Note 3), which means the only reason it's even tolerable to hold with one hand is its thin profile and smooth curved edges. Check out our gallery of hands-on pictures and meet us after the break for more impressions and details.

A Nokia product announcement wouldn't be complete without some new Nokia software to go along with it, so what does the company have in store for us this round? Among other things is Storyteller, which -- as the name suggests -- wants to display your photos and videos in the form of stories. It also ties in with Nokia Here maps to show where pictures are taken, and recording with the Lumia 1520's four microphones allows audiophiles to capture directional stereo audio too. It's all meant to give a "richer experience" when you're capturing photos, and later when sharing them with family and friends. Update: Nokia just announced Storyteller for its brand new Lumia 2520 tablet, and you can check a video for Storyteller on the Nokia Lumia 1520 after the break.

Could this be the Windows Phone you've been waiting for? If you've been holding out for a flagship with a 6-inch 1080p display, high-resolution 20-megapixel PureView camera and a top-of-the-line processor (a quad-core Snapdragon 800 with 2GB of RAM), we'd suspect the answer is probably yes. We are, of course, talking about the Nokia Lumia 1520, the long-rumored, big-screened smartphone, which has finally been announced at Nokia World in Abu Dhabi. That giant screen offers enough space for a third row of live tiles, and new Windows Phone will also come with GDR3 -- the very latest build of Microsoft's OS. It'll also be the first Lumia to arrive with Nokia Camera, a new camera app that fuses the best of the Pro and Smart cameras that came before it. That polycarbonate shell (recycled, no less) will come in yellow, red, white and white black options. The yellow option that Mr. Elop was brandishing over at Nokia World matched the glossy look of the Lumia 920. Launching in Asia and Europe later this quarter, it's been priced, unsubsidized, at $750. This time around, the camera's pegged at 20 megapixels, with a BSI f/2.4 Zeiss lens and optical image stabilization along for the ride. Nokia promises the same oversampling and zooming tech as found in the 41-megapixel Lumia 1020, just, well, less of it.

Well, isn't this convenient? Rumors have circulated that Nokia was delaying the Lumia 1520 launch beyond late September, and the company has just teased an "innovation reinvented" event on October 22nd. The company isn't giving many clues, although the desert skiing image is curious -- we're wondering if the press gathering may take place in a similarly exotic venue. Wherever the event takes place, you know we'll be there.

If you believe the rumors, Nokia was supposed to launch the supersized Lumia 1520 (aka Bandit) as soon as next week. However, this unannounced Windows Phone may have hit an unofficial snag: Reuters claims that Nokia has delayed the unveiling by "several weeks" in the wake of Microsoft's plans to buy the company's device business. There's no word on an adjusted release date, although the historically accurate @evleaks has heard that the 1520 might appear in late October. Not surprisingly, Nokia isn't commenting on delays for a product that doesn't officially exist -- but don't be shocked if there's a new flagship Lumia later in the fall.

An oversized smartphone with Zeiss optics and PureView camera technology? We wouldn't expect anything less from Nokia, but it's nice to see the rumors roll in, all the same. Noted Weibo leaker Houdabao has managed to get his hands on a large Lumia device with a PureView 20-megapixel camera, Zeiss optics and Verizon branding. The post describes the devices as a "big big Windows Phone," which sounds an awful lot like the rumored Lumia 1520. The speakers and camera flash are in slightly different locations than the leaked image we saw earlier this month, but we're willing to chalk that up to carrier variations. Nokia hasn't said anything official just yet, but rumors suggest that the device will be officially unveiled later this month.

  • Extra-large Nokia Lumia 1520 surfaces in press image

Want a clear look at Nokia's Lumia 1520 (aka Bandit)? You may just have it. After posting a screen capture earlier in the week, @evleaks has released what's reportedly a press image of the super-sized, 1080p Windows Phone. The render largely matches what we've seen before, including the additional Live Tiles on the home screen, but the back is new. It suggests that there will be a Lumia 925-style camera hump -- sorry, no 41-megapixel sensor here -- along with aesthetics borrowed from other members of the Lumia family. There's no guarantee that this image is real, but we won't be surprised if it accurately represents Nokia's last flagship before Microsoft takes the reins.

While technically not the biggest Nokia news of the morning, it's possibly news of the biggest Nokia. The ever resourceful @evleaks has posted what is claimed to be a screenshot from the Nokia "Bandit," also suspected to emerge as the Lumia 1520. There's a lot going on in the image, but one thing's for sure, you'll not be left wanting for space for mini tiles. Though even then, there are options. Update: Upon further inspection, there are a few interesting things to note. The original image is 1,080 x 1,920 -- a resolution not currently supported in Windows Phone. This corroborates claims that GDR3 will be coming along for the ride, along with a revised camera app (or icon, at least). Oh, and of course, more columns and rows for your start menu!

Rumors are circulating that Nokia's first extra-large smartphone, possibly called the Lumia 1520, is near launch. If it's real, you might be looking at it -- Windows Phone Central has obtained a photo that purportedly shows the device for the first time. The snapshot presents a behemoth that makes even the Lumia 1020 look dainty. Unfortunately, there's little to corroborate claims that a quad-core processor, a 20-megapixel camera and Windows Phone 8 GDR3 lurk inside. We've also seen a previous fake that looks like this, although the new phone's bezel both matches that from a July part rumor and carries the prototype stamp common to Nokia test units. When there's talk of Nokia unveiling the 1520 in late September alongside a Windows tablet, we may learn the truth behind the photo within a few weeks.
