He'll be replaced by current senior executive <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/03/panasonic-exec-says-blu-ray-will-win-soon/">Kazuhiro Tsuga</a> in an executive reshuffle that'll take place in June, when Ohtsubo will step up to become chairman of the board, replacing Kunio Nakamura who is taking an "advisory role." Tsuga was formerly an exec. at Matsushita (before it was renamed... <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/02/matsushita-electric-becomes-panasonic-like-for-real/">Panasonic</a>. We swore we wouldn't fall for tech demos of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/tmd">Toshiba Matsushita Display's</a> sexy <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/05/27/toshiba-demos-ocb-lcd-technology-but-doesnt-deliver/">optically compensated bend </a>LCDs and their CRT-like ultra wide viewing angles and high refresh rates ever again but by adding autostereoscopic <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/3d">3D</a> (read: no glasses necessary) we're falling in love all over again. By adapting a 3D film for use with 3- and 9-inch displays, this year's CES demo promises simultaneous 2D and 3D viewing on the same display in high res. How close is OCB's curved, rather than horizontally or vertically aligned liquid crystal approach to reality? As of October 2008, Matsushita Electric Industrial Company has become Panasonic Corporation, and its stock ticker symbol on the NYSE has been changed from MC to PC. Additionally, Panny is working on "brand changeover from National to Panasonic within Japan," which probably won't be completed until March of 2010. So yeah, Matsushita's logo actually isn't going anywhere just yet, but we appreciate the effort, guys.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/10/02/matsushita-electric-becomes-panasonic-like-for-real/">Matsushita Electric becomes Panasonic, like, for real</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 02 Oct 2008 10:35:00 EST. Honda's been trying for months now to convince you that "the van is back in style," and while we're still not entirely sure that line isn't just marketing hoopla (okay, it is), at least the company is working to make the thing more technologically advanced. Starting next month in Japan, the automaker will debut a multi-view camera system for its Odyssey minivan, which will utilize the same 360-degree overhead cam tech that Nissan <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/12/nissans-around-view-arrives-in-the-us-december/">picked up last year</a>. The system will give drivers the ability to see more as they prepare to back out, and the biggest boon is the ability to view ninjas adhered to parking garage ceilings prior to opening the sunroof and facing The Reaper. Unfortunately, there's no word on when it'll be available in other corners of the globe, but we'd guess 2009 if we had a Katana put to our throat.<br /><br />[Thanks, JagsLive]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/transportation/" rel="tag">Transportation</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/24/honda-bringing-360-degree-multi-view-camera-system-to-odyssey/">Honda bringing 360-degree multi-view camera system to Odyssey</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Sep 2008 10:38:00 EST. Didn't see anything that particularly suited your fancy <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/07/cedia-2008-roundup/">at CEDIA</a>? Then feast your eyes on CEATEC. As the Japan-based trade show hastily approaches, out pops a mind-boggling new home theater package from Panasonic. The system will include one of its marvelous <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/103-inch/">103-inch plasma HDTVs</a>, a Blu-ray player and at least one set of fancy 3D goggles. Hailed as a world's first in some form or fashion, the Full HD 3D package utilizes an undisclosed format "employed by major Hollywood film studios" to "distribute full HD images of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels to each eye via synchronized shutter glasses." Panny is hoping to promote the technology and possibly get a leg up <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/08/samsungs-3d-plasmas-powered-by-ddd-tridef/">on Samsung</a> (our assumption) by impressing wealthy homeowners and members of the Blu-ray Disc Association. As expected, there's no mention of a price, but rest assured -- you'll be stuck choosing between this and a new BMW.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://74.125.93.104/translate_c?hl=en&amp;u=http://av.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/20080924/pana.htm&amp;usg=ALkJrhjf9M8ZosocaN368a0hdC9gYM9JcQ">Impress</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-formats/" rel="tag">Other formats</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/09/24/panasonic-bundles-103-inch-plasma-blu-ray-player-in-3d-home-the/">Panasonic bundles 103-inch plasma, Blu-ray player in 3D home theater package</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Sep 2008 07:34:00 EST. We've witnessed a few <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/09/samsung-sued-for-defective-blu-ray-players/">lawsuits</a> related to Blu-ray, but this is the first one we can recall that perfectly fits the "<a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/patent+troll/">patent troll</a>" mold. <em>The Patent Prospector</em> has it that Acacia subsidiary Digital Security Systems is suing a smorgasbord of big BD players for infringing on a patent that it has held for years. Defendants named include Samsung, Best Buy, Denon, Funai, LG, Matsushita, Panasonic, Philips, Pioneer, and Sharp, though details beyond that are sadly scant. Oh, and if you're wondering where the complaint was filed, it was in the infamous Eastern District of Texas.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://formatwarcentral.com/index.php/2008/08/14/lawyers-gone-wild-blu-ray-companies-sued-over-alleged-patent-violations/">FormatWarCentral</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/08/15/digital-security-systems-files-patent-infringement-suit-against/">Digital Security Systems files patent infringement suit against major Blu-ray players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 15 Aug 2008 11:58:00 EST. Matsushita Electric just posted its most recent quarterly earnings, and needless to say, it's probably pretty stoked about the 86% rise in profit. According to reports, the majority of the credit goes to digital camera and flat-panel television sales, and even though sales actually decreased 4%, operating profit still rose 48% from a year prior. Good to see someone's making sure that flat-panels <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/01/research-firm-expects-flat-panel-sales-to-spearhead-2008-electro/">rule the consumer electronics roost in 2008</a>.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/31/matsushita-profit-soars-86-on-the-wings-of-high-flat-panel-sale/">Matsushita profit soars 86% on the wings of high flat-panel sales</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 31 Jul 2008 08:30:00 EST. Shortly after Matsushita <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/08/matsushita-stumbles-lg-becomes-top-plasma-supplier-once-again/">dropped to third</a> in plasma shipments in Q1, the outfit has leapfrogged both LG and Samsung SDI in order to claim the gold in Q2 2008. The outfit's revenue share skyrocketed from 29.4% to 36.8%, showing a 23% year-over-year improvement. Also of note, 1080p PDPs saw remarkable growth (54% year-over-year) this quarter, which were reportedly driven by sales of 46-inch models. Looking at Matsushita in particular, over 43% of its plasma shipments in Q2 were 1080p, and overall it "accounted for over 70% of all 1080p PDP shipments." Anyone taking <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/01/research-firm-expects-flat-panel-sales-to-spearhead-2008-electro/">bets</a> on who comes out on top in Q3?<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/others/" rel="tag">Others</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sharp/" rel="tag">Sharp</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/sony/" rel="tag">Sony</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/28/displaysearch-q2-plasma-results-shows-big-growth-matsushita-on/">DisplaySearch Q2 plasma results shows big growth, Matsushita on top</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 28 Jul 2008 16:28:00 EST. Reportedly, the two outfits will establish manufacturing lines in the Ishikawa Prefecture in fall of 2009, with plans to churn out one million 2.5-inch EL displays. Granted, the products will be rather minuscule in nature, with the idea being to fit them into cellphones, PMPs and other handheld gadgetry. Europe <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/05/just-5-of-europes-hdtv-owners-watch-hd-programming/">isn't much</a> on HD programming (yet), but that doesn't mean there's no demand for HDTVs. A recent article highlighting Matsushita's (Panasonic's parent company) European presence states that its share there is now bigger than ever thanks to a "combination of marketing and restructuring efforts over the past several years." As the <a href="http://www.www.engadget.com/2007/05/07/wal-marts-hdtv-pricing-puts-competition-in-a-world-of-hurt/">competition</a> within the North American sector has skyrocketed, Matsushita has been able to reap profits from Europeans willing to pay for a quality product. Europe actually made up 45% of its overseas sales of all digital electronics during the fiscal year ended March 2008, while just 25% came from the US, Canada and Mexico. It's also suggested that one of Matsushita's missteps here in the US was its reliance on selling pricey plasma TVs at a limited number of stores, and anyone that lives here knows that we Americans appreciate cheap. A pretty interesting read, though we still wish Europe would stop spending cash on digital photo frames and start <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/10/survey-sez-add-more-hd-content-and-they-will-come/">investing</a> in high-def programming. Yeah, selfish.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/misc/" rel="tag">Misc</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/other-hardware/" rel="tag">Other hardware</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/07/20/matsushitas--european-strategy-paying-off/">Matsushita's European strategy paying off</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sun, 20 Jul 2008 03:04:00 EST. After <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/10/matsushita-to-become-panasonic-everywhere-thank-you-panny/">much deliberation</a>, shareholders approved a proposal to change the company's name to Panasonic Corporation. The change will begin in Japan October 1, 2008 with an NYSE symbol change from "MC" to "PC" and will be complete in March 2010 with all products and divisions under the Panasonic moniker. While this won't be a big deal to those of us who know Panasonic for its displays and electronics, gone will be the Matsushita battery, ecology, and welding division names. Good bye Matsushita, it was fun while it lasted.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/household/" rel="tag">Household</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/laptops/" rel="tag">Laptops</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/06/26/matsushita-goes-with-panasonic-brand-name-for-all-divisions/">Matsushita goes with Panasonic brand name for all divisions</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 26 Jun 2008 12:36:00 EST. Looking forward to a future full of cheaper, slimmer <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/bd-live">BD-Live</a> compatible Blu-ray players? Say hello to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/">Panasonic</a>'s 3rd generation <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/uniphier">UniPhier</a> processor, which it claims is the first single chip processor designed to handle picture-in-picture and all other necessary Profile 2.0 features. DTS-HD MA, Dolby TrueHD, DivX 1080p, Ethernet controller, laser control, graphics engine, it's all in there. Built on a 45nm process the chip size has shrunk 50% from the previous generation, which should contribute to higher yields and lower prices. Sample shipments start in June, so while we don't expect to see it, at least initially, in the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/dmp-bd50">DMP-BD50</a>, this should contribute to significant cost savings in future models. Maybe one day they'll even cost less than a similarly-featured PlayStation 3.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?hl=en&amp;u=http://www.watch.impress.co.jp/av/docs/20080522/pana.htm">AV Watch</a> &amp; <a href="http://www.akihabaranews.com/en/news-16063-Panasonic+Develops+World%27s+First+Single-Chip+Signal+Processing+LSI+for+Blu-ray+Disc+Players.html">Akihabara News</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/blu-ray/" rel="tag">Blu-ray</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/22/panasonics-uniphier-3-to-deliver-cheaper-bd-live-enabled-blu-ra/">Panasonic's UniPhier 3 to deliver cheaper BD-Live enabled Blu-ray players</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 22 May 2008 08:09:00 EST. After slipping past their original <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/01/06/panasonic-revamps-its-plasma-lineup/">spring</a> release date, Panasonic's <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/pz850">PZ850</a> series of plasmas are no longer the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/05/07/hp-brings-youtube-to-mediasmart-connected-products/">only ones with YouTube support</a>, but those desiring internet features, high contrast ratios and easy-access calibration settings can expect them on shelves this summer. The 46-, 50- and 58-inch versions should all be available in mid-June, with the 65-incher rolling out in August. Other than the IP features (Picasa access is also part of the package) the THX-certified PZ850s support h.264 playback from the SD card slot, RS-232C, 24p native playback, and a variety of display modes and settings to get the picture just the way the director intended, the way you like it, or anywhere in between. Believe it or not, it was around this day two full years ago that LG managed to climb atop <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/28/matsushita-talks-about-future-plasma-developments/">Matsushita</a>, Hitachi and the rest of the gang to claim the label of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/03/lg-top-plasma-maker-in-the-world/">top plasma maker in the world</a>. Shortly thereafter, Matsushita roared to number one and has remained there ever since -- until now. The aforesaid firm slipped from #1 to #3 in Q1 2008, as LG's share surged 34.8-percent on 97-percent year-over-year growth. Samsung SDI took advantage of Matsushita's folly and claimed the silver for the first time, while Hitachi, Pioneer and Orion closed out the bottom in that order. We've got a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/02/q1-2008-plasma-shipments-up-56-from-a-year-ago/">good feeling</a> about PDP this year, but we aren't about to <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/12/plasmas-success-is-no-comeback/">call it a comeback</a>.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://techon.nikkeibp.co.jp/english/NEWS_EN/20080507/151374/">Tech-On</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lg/" rel="tag">LG</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/05/08/matsushita-stumbles-lg-becomes-top-plasma-supplier-once-again/">Matsushita stumbles, LG becomes top plasma supplier once again</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 08 May 2008 11:45:00 EST. Pioneer and Matsushita (Panasonic) have finally hammered out the basics of a deal that will allow the latter to supply panels for future <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/KURO">Kuro</a> plasma displays, and plasma HDTV fans to breathe easy again. Pending a final agreement in May, dollars and cents remain undisclosed, but we can expect a fusion of Panasonic's current "Neo PDP" technology from its <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/viera">Viera</a> line when they begin production May 2009 in Amagasaki before hitting shelves in the fall. Kuro will still be maintained as a premium brand (with a premium price) with different image processing, while both companies plan to keep working together on reducing power consumption and the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/hands-on-with-pioneers-extreme-contrast-concept-plasma/">infinite black level</a> plasma. Given that Matsushita (Panasonic's parent company) is slated to start <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/08/pioneer-isnt-abandoning-kuro-plasma-expects-same-quality-panel/">pumping out</a> plasma panels for Pioneer, it's no surprise to hear that the company is getting serious about some seriously impressive developments. During a recent seminar full of TV geeks and gurus, the company talked of the "Fifth Wave" arriving, presumably alluding to its fifth PDP plant in Amagasaki, which is set to open up in May 2009. Generally speaking, we're told that future sets will likely be more interactive, include more "professional digital technologies" that have typically been reserved for professional models, and of course, TVs that are thinner and lighter. All in all, nothing too surprising here, but considering the expectations that come along with the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kuro/">Kuro</a> name, we wouldn't be shocked to see some noticeable upgrades / innovations emerge over the next year and change.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/28/matsushita-talks-about-future-plasma-developments/">Matsushita talks about future plasma developments</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 28 Mar 2008 10:48:00 EST. If you're all broken up about Pioneer's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/07/pioneer-officially-ends-in-house-plasma-production-kuro-lcds-co/">seeming exit of the plasma business</a>, take heart. Pioneer Executive Vice President Russ Johnston claims Pioneer's plans aren't to abandon <a href="http://www.engadget.com/tag/Kuro/">Kuro</a>-quality plasma displays in any way. The move to an outside manufacturer (Matsushita, parent company of Panasonic) is designed to cut cost in plasma production, but Pioneer still plans to maintain its premium edge over competitors. "The number-one goal is to make sure we can maintain our differentiation," said Russ, "and specifically our Kuro difference in the marketplace." Apparently Pioneer will be still be responsible for the video circuit and processing, the color filter strategy and other such secret sauce, and the company is confident Matsushita can step up to the Pioneer level of panel production -- even if it might involve sharing a few trade secrets along the way. Apparently Matsushita is slated to start providing the modules by 2009.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/homeentertainment/" rel="tag">Home Entertainment</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/08/pioneer-isnt-abandoning-kuro-plasma-expects-same-quality-panel/">Pioneer isn't abandoning Kuro plasma, expects same-quality panels from Matsushita</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Sat, 08 Mar 2008 12:38:00 EST. We <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/03/03/pioneer-kuro-pdp-5080hd-tops-home-theater-mags-hdtv-shoot-out/">wondered why its so hard to find one of Pioneer's award winning</a> <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/tag/kuro">Kuro</a> plasmas on shelves these days, and here is the answer. <em>The Nikkei</em> is reporting that Pioneer plans to stop producing plasma panels altogether, and only put together HDTVs with panels purchased from other sources. Panasonic and Hitachi remain as the only Japanese plasma manufacturers, Pioneer already has a deal with the former to purchase <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/24/pioneer-to-stop-making-42-inch-plasmas/">plasmas for its 42-inch model</a>, and will expand that agreement according to <em>The Nikkei</em>. Honestly, this wouldn't be a big deal for most companies, as we've seen with the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2008/02/27/sony-and-samsung-may-expand-lcd-partnership/">Sony</a>/<a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/26/sharp-and-sony-tie-the-knot-on-lcd-hdtv-production/">Sharp</a>/<a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/11/22/samsung-announces-plans-to-expand-8g-lcd-plant-without-sony/">Samsung </a>triangle in LCD manufacturing, but since Pioneer is the only manufacturer promising the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/hands-on-with-pioneers-extreme-contrast-concept-plasma/">blackest black levels</a> this side of <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/17/scientists-create-darkest-material-ever/">carbon nanotubes</a>, we're freaking out a bit. Here's hoping Pioneer slides over the blueprints to the infinite contrast concept (and that sexy <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/hands-on-with-the-pioneer-9mm-thick-kuro-plasma/">9mm mode</a>l) and keeps the party going.<br /><br />[Thanks to everyone who sent this in; via <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/23454069/for/cnbc">CNBC</a>; warning: reg required on read link]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/03/pioneer-says-goodbye-to-plasma-manufacturing/">Pioneer says goodbye to plasma manufacturing</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Mon, 03 Mar 2008 18:42:00 EST. Looks like we're already starting to see some repercussions from the (very) recent <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/15/panasonic-and-hitachi-finalize-paperwork-in-lcd-alliance/">deal</a> struck between Panasonic and Hitachi. Reportedly, Matsushita -- known for its Panasonic brand -- is getting set to construct a $2.8 billion LCD factory in western Japan that it hopes to open by 2010. The move is said to be in response to the weakening demand for plasmas and the increasing demand for LCDs, and when everything goes operational, the plant should be able to crank out 15 million 32-inch LCD panels per year. Notably, the facility will be built by IPS Alpha Technology, which Matsushita will be a <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/25/panasonic-hitachi-and-canon-make-billion-dollar-lcd-deal-offici/">majority owner</a> in after "buying out Toshiba and Hitachi's stake in the venture." Better yet, it's noted that IPS Alpha could also dabble in OLED technology, so yeah, you can consider our interest piqued.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://www.about-electronics.eu/2008/02/18/matsushita-to-build-lcd-factory/">About-Electronics</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/lcd/" rel="tag">LCD</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/oled/" rel="tag">OLED</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2008/02/19/matsushita-gears-up-to-build-2-8-billion-lcd-factory-in-japan/">Matsushita gears up to build $2.8 billion LCD factory in Japan</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Tue, 19 Feb 2008 09:31:00 EST. Sure, it was a tough decision to discard the name of its founder after a 90 year reign. But let's face it, the dual-naming scheme hurt both brands and created confusion in the global marketplace. The change goes official on October 1st, pending approval by shareholders.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/gadgets/" rel="tag">Misc. After just a few months of legal wrangling, Kodak and Matsushita have settled their <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/07/27/kodak-sues-matsushita-over-patent-infringement/">patent lawsuit</a>, originally brought by Kodak due to Matsushita's alleged infringement of a number of digital camera-related patents. The two companies have agreed to cross-license each other's patents, but it's not all sharing and cupcakes -- the agreement is "royalty-bearing to Kodak," according to documents filed with the SEC. That was fast -- guess Kodak's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/02/kodaks-gonna-turn-the-schmaltz-back-up-to-11/">new</a> <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2004/03/10/kodak-sues-sony/">strategy</a> of aggressively enforcing its IP portfolio is working out after all.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/digitalcameras/" rel="tag">Digital Cameras</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/28/kodak-and-matsushita-settle-patent-dispute/">Kodak and Matsushita settle patent dispute</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Fri, 28 Dec 2007 17:48:00 EST. If things work out, plasma-happy Panny would get a quick foothold in the burgeoning large-panel (greater than 40-inches) LCD market while Hitachi makes a quick get away from its loss making business. Canon is also looking to invest in Hitachi to get their hands on Hitachi's smaller LCD and OLED panels. Matsushita, Hitachi and Canon all issued statements saying that nothing has yet been decided -- a far cry from denial. If things work out, plasma-happy Panny would get a quick foothold in the <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/10/18/displaybank-says-lcd-to-reach-66-of-tv-sales-by-2015/">burgeoning</a> large-panel (greater than 40-inches) LCD market while Hitachi makes a quick get away from its loss making business. Canon is also looking to invest in Hitachi to get their hands on Hitachi's smaller LCD and OLED panels. Matsushita, Hitachi and Canon all issued statements saying that nothing has yet been decided -- a far cry from denial.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/19/panasonic-and-hitachi-in-rumored-multi-billion-dollar-lcd-panel/">Panasonic and Hitachi in rumored multi-billion dollar LCD panel deals</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 19 Dec 2007 07:06:00 EST. Reportedly, the two have "entered into a memorandum of understanding in which they have agreed in principle on terms and conditions of a formal settlement and cross-license agreement," which would finally conclude the bickering surrounding patents for plasma screens. Essentially, the two have accused each other of infringing on PDP-related patents for years, but it seems that all this holiday cheer has gotten the best of 'em. Notably, no terms of the (potential) agreement were loosed, but we're expecting some serious coin to change hands, regardless.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/industry/" rel="tag">Industry</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/panasonic/" rel="tag">Panasonic</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/samsung/" rel="tag">Samsung</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/plasma/" rel="tag">Plasma</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/11/29/samsung-and-matsushita-close-to-settling-pdp-patent-dispute/">Samsung and Matsushita close to settling PDP patent dispute</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Thu, 29 Nov 2007 09:12:00 EST. Actually, it's not clear <em>what </em>started the fire at Matsushita's Li-ion plant in western Japan on September 30th, although we suspect a cadre of malcontents decided to self-detonate after taking a cue from their comrades at Sony. What <em>is </em>clear is that an unnamed Pentax digital camera -- probably one of the <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/01/pentax-intros-optio-a40-v10-digital-cameras/">recently-announced Optios </a>-- will be delayed because of the fire, with its launch being pushed from next month to February of next year. Remember Toshiba's <a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/18/toshibas-new-circular-lcds-because-your-eyes-are-round/">round LCD displays</a>? Good, 'cause they've got a whole range of prototypes on display at FPD to demonstrate several possible usage scenarios. As an example, how does this cellphone powder your fancy? It's all future-looking stuff so prepare yourself for a cotton-candy filled tip-toe through Tomorrowland, mkay, and head on over to <a href="http://64.233.179.104/translate_c?u=http%3A%2F%2Fjapanese.engadget.com%2F2007%2F10%2F24%2Ffpdi2007-tmdt%2F&amp;langpair=ja%7Cen&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF8"><em>Engadget Japanese</em></a> for the goods.<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/cellphones/" rel="tag">Cellphones</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/displays/" rel="tag">Displays</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portableaudio/" rel="tag">Portable Audio</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/portablevideo/" rel="tag">Portable Video</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/24/toshibas-round-displays-on-the-display-rounds/">Toshiba's round displays make the display rounds</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 24 Oct 2007 06:47:00 EST. Nah, Panasonic's LF-PB271JD couldn't hold a candle to Sony's <a href="http://www.engadgethd.com/2007/10/09/sonys-bwu-200s-blu-ray-burner-reaches-4x-speeds/">BWU-200S</a> in a runway competition, but when it comes to performance, we'd say the two are practically neck and neck. This unit fits snuggly within any Windows-based machine lookin' for a 5.25-inch optical drive, and it has no problems burning dual-layer BD-Rs at a furious (ahem) 4x pace. Additionally, you'll find a SATA interface along with backup software bundled in, and just in case you're not working exclusively with BD-R, it can also toast BD-RE at 2x, DVD&plusmn;R at 16x, DVD&plusmn;R DL at 8x, DVD-RW at 6x, CD-R at 40x and CD-RW at 24x. Of course, you'll be paying through the nose for the luxuries presented when it lands on November 10th, but the &yen;55,000 ($468) asking price is still a good bit lower than what Sony's demanding.<br /><br />[Via <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?u=http%3A%2F%2Fpc.watch.impress.co.jp%2Fdocs%2F2007%2F1017%2Fpana.htm&amp;langpair=ja%7Cen&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;oe=UTF-8&amp;prev=%2Flanguage_tools">Impress</a>]<p>Filed under: <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/hdtv/" rel="tag">HDTV</a>, <a href="http://www.engadget.com/category/storage/" rel="tag">Storage</a></p><p style="padding:5px;background:#ddd;border:1px solid #ccc;clear:both;"><a href="http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/17/panasonics-internal-lf-pb271jd-drive-burns-blu-ray-at-4x/">Panasonic's internal LF-PB271JD drive burns Blu-ray at 4x</a> originally appeared on <a href="http://www.engadget.com">Engadget</a> on Wed, 17 Oct 2007 17:39:00 EST.
