Capcom kicked off a sale on games in its Mega Man series through the Nintendo 3DS and Wii U eShops today. The sale coincides with the 27th anniversary of the iconic blue hero as well as the debut of another game on Nintendo's Virtual Console: Mega Man Zero. The Game Boy Advance classic is now available on the Wii U eShop for $7.99. The "Mega Manniversary" sale hacks 50 percent off the price of six Mega Man games until Monday, December 22 at 11:59 a.m. ET (8:59 a.m. PT). On sale are the Game Boy versions of Mega Man 2, Mega Man 3 and Mega Man 4 for 3DS, each down to $1.49. As for Wii U, players can download NES games Mega Man 5 and Mega Man 6 for $2.49 each as well as Mega Man 7 for $3.99. Of course, kids these days may have troubles with these difficult retro platformers. [Image: Capcom]

May's all about Mega Man's Game Boy advance on the 3DS, and that continues this week with Mega Man 2 and Mega Man 3. As for the non-Mega games, only one of them is on Wii U this week and it's another retro offering. If you enjoyed all those GBA games from last month, you might want to point your GamePad the way of Wario Land 4. Back on the portable, then, the headline new release is reality-augmenting RPG The Denpa Men 3. If you'd prefer to try before you buy there's a demo version you can check out. Finally... sales! Trine 2: Director's Cut is 50 percent off for three weeks, starting today - that should take it down to $10. Also, Etrian Odyssey 4 and Etrian Odyssey Untold go on sale for a week starting May 12, but what their exact discounts are remains... untold. Well, at least until Nintendo or Atlus pipes up. Mega Man's adventures on Game Boy and Game Boy Color get their 3DS re-releases in May, almost a year after they were first announced. While Capcom's not been in any Rush to get the games onto the Virtual Console, the publisher is asking fans to vote on which they want first of Mega Man 2-5 (Dr Wily's Revenge hit the 3DS back in 2011) and Mega Man Xtreme 1 and 2. The winner will be first out of the door on May 1. [Image: Capcom]

A digital version of Mega Man 3's official soundtrack is now available through Capcom's equally intangible web store, for the default price of $8.95.The 39 track album includes such classics as "Shall we go on a Magnetic Continuous tour?" and the game's title screen theme, which has been scientifically proven to be one of the most effective pump-up jams of all time. The soundtrack was composed by Capcom composer/sound designer Yasuaki Fujita, under the alias "Bun Bun." Fujita was also responsible for the soundtracks to NES versions of The Little Mermaid and Darkwing Duck, as well as Panic in Nakayoshi World, which as far as we can tell is some kind of Sailor Moon/Bomberman thing.

Mega Man 3 will launch on the 3DS Virtual Console next week, March 14 to be exact, according to a Capcom Unity update. What's more, Mega Man 4, 5 and 6 will launch in subsequent months.Capcom notes that by the time Mega Man 6 heads to the 3DS eShop, it will make digital versions of each game's soundtrack available for purchase. No prices were announced for the games, though Mega Man 2 landed on the 3DS eShop just one month ago for $4.99.

Mega Man turns 25 this year, and to celebrate Capcom is amassing the music from the series' 10 main games into a single collection, which will be available for ¥14,700 ($183.56) on September 19, provided you're fluent enough to traverse the exceedingly Japanese wilds of E-Capcom.Yes, sadly there have been no announcements regarding a North American release of the collection, which contains the NES and PlayStation soundtracks for Mega Man 1 through 6, as well as the jams from Mega Man 7, 8, 9 and 10, which don't have alternate versions. Here's hoping there's some kind of support structure for those discs inside of that E-Tank canister.

In addition to the Mega Man 9 and 10 DLC packs listed as discounted in this week's PSN update, you can also get ... Mega Man 9 and 10. And Mega Mans 1-3. Though they didn't show up on Sony's official list of updates, the entire Mega Man catalog on PS3 is on sale this week, half off. The PSOne Imports versions of Mega Man 1, 2, and 3 (based on the Japanese PlayStation re-releases) are now available for $2.99 each. Mega Man 9 and 10 sell for $4.99 each this week, with DLC bundles an extra $2.99. Given Capcom's recent attitude toward Mega Man, we'd love to see what happened if these discounts led to a massive sales boost.

We typically wouldn't characterize most video game theme song covers that get sent our way as "soulful" or "profound," but then again, most covers that get sent our way aren't as incredible as Dario Montanino's electric take on Mega Man 3's Proto Man theme. Check it out in the video below.

If you don't already have Mega Man 3 on the NES, the Wii Virtual Console or in the Mega Man Anniversary Collection, and if you have a Japanese PSN account, you'll be able to purchase the classic run-and-gun for your PlayStation systems next month. Capcom announced that the Rockman Complete Works PS1 port of Mega Man 3 will be added to the Japanese PlayStation Store in April. But some Japanese Mega Man 10 buyers will be able to get it early -- Capcom is giving away 50 copies to random PSN users who buy Mega Man 10 in the first two weeks of its availability. Unless you've got a PS2 or a PSP, there's really no excuse to miss out on downloading Phantasy Star IV: The End of the Millennium, a game that is treated with justifiable reverence by fans of the franchise's early years. Mega Man 3 might not represent the peak of its respective series, but it's still worth a punt for 500 points. Especially as you don't have to look at this. Mega Man 3 (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points)Wii Fanboy says: download it! What can we say about Mega Man 3? It's a classic game, one that should be in anyone's collection. We'd suggest you check out Anniversary Collection as it's a pretty good compilation disc, but if you're more the type to like downloading things, then check out Mega Man 3. Either way, just play it. Each week, we here at Wii Fanboy like to check out the latest Virtual Console releases in our VC Monday Madness feature, in the hopes that you can make the most sound decision possible regarding purchasing retro titles from the Wii Shop Channel. If you're looking for more retro goodness, check out Virtually Overlooked, which talks about games that should be on the Virtual Console.

This week's sole Virtual Console offering is Mega Man 3 (NES, 1 player, 500 Wii Points), an ideal match for post-MM9 masochists looking to rediscover the blue bomber's (square) roots. As you can see, our power-hungry protagonist once again finds himself trapped between eight fiendish robot masters -- a particularly alarming situation given the locations of Hard Man and Top Man.

  • VC Tuesday: Capcom rocks

Capcom traditionally lends lots of support to every system, no matter how well or poorly they are doing. Games like Marvel vs. Capcom, Mars Matrix, and Power Stone helped make the Dreamcast worth owning, for example. So it's no surprise that the Wii, which is actually very popular and enables companies to easily lend support in the form of direct ports of old games, is the recipient of some of Capcom's favor. It's an especially good week in Japan for Capcom fans, with both Rockman 3 and Mercs, the sequel to the classic Commando. We're very curious about this CD version of Nekketsu Koukou Dodgeball-bu. It looks pretty much like a PC Engine version of Nintendo World Cup, but ... maybe it's got good music? Rockman 3 (Famicom, 1 player, 500 Wii Points) Senjou no Okami II (Mega Drive, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points) Nekketsu Koukou Dodgeball-bu CD Soccer Hen (PC Engine CD-ROM, 1-4 players, 800 Wii Points) This week's WiiWare releases include a board game sort of like Pente and a WiiWare version of a Japan-developed entry in Gameloft's mobile Nights simulation series: Tokyo City Nights (1 player, 1,000 Wii Points) Saikyou Ginsei Gomoku Narabe (1-2 players, 500 Wii Points)

It's a pretty light month for releases on the Virtual Console in Japan, but it's still a good month, mostly for one reason: Mega Man 3. Even though we'll be happy with any Mega Man games that Capcom decides to put on the Virtual Console, Mega Man 3 is, generally speaking, from the period before Mega Man games started to go downhill. So it's actually good! We'd love to see how new Mega Man 9 players react to a game designed with sliding in mind. The other really big news is Ogre Battle: The March of the Black Queen, the first Ogre Battle strategy game, and a classic of the genre. Personally, we're happy to see Mercs, Cadash, and the CD version of the Kunio soccer game! The full list is after the break.%Gallery-32143%

  • Mega Man 3, potential new Art Style games rated in Australia

    by
    JC Fletcher

    10.09.2008

Two more games presumed to be Art Style remakes of bit Generations games showed up on the OFLC database: Rotohex and Cubello. Rotohex was the original name for Dialhex, a puzzle game involving rotating triangles to form same-colored hexagons, back when the series was known as Digitylish. The GBA game even received an ESRB rating under that name. Cubello is probably Coloris, a game about matching colored blocks by shifting their colors along the visible spectrum. Unless it isn't an Art Style game. Mega Man 3 needs no introduction. It's the NES game that most closely vies with Mega Man 2 for the title of "Most Beloved Mega Man game," the one that introduced Rush, sliding, and the least menacingly Robot Master ever, Top Man. He attacks with the power of tops! [Via VOOKS]

You know, I told myself (and others) that I wasn't going to do this. But I can't ignore it. Today is the day that Mega Man makes his glorious return. Like a modern V-day, the blue bomber is coming home and completing his duty of pleasing the hardcore enthusiasts. With a rarely-seen level of excitement and anticipation being dispersed by the gaming community, we might as well have Mega Man slowly ride the streets through a ticker-tape parade seated on top of a convertible. I didn't want to stir the pot by declaring what the best Mega Man games are due to some sacred cows surrounding the topic. But ignoring honesty for the sake of peace and comfort would be committing a great disservice to us all. We decided to take a look at the highlights of the Mega Man series. Any title in the expansive universe was acceptable. But let's be honest: there's only going to be games from the original and X series (as if Mega Man Star Force stood a chance). And with any luck, today's release will find its way onto this list. Here's a heads-up: you might not agree with these choices. I did my best to provide arguments of why every game belongs on this list and in the order that it does. In the interests of intelligent debate, please do the same in your rebuttals. The Mega Man series is known for its excellent music, but one theme from the series stands above its contemporaries. This masterful work of digital audio art sits alone and exalted as the finest of the fine, as the Hope Diamond might sit among a pile of lesser gems. The true beauty and nuance of this piece is remembered but once a year, today, on Snake Man theme music day, a new holiday that continues in the tradition of game music days past. Come celebrate with us, won't you?
