It's been quite some time since we heard anything about Mega Man Online, which we first heard about in May 2010. Unfortunately for fans of the Blue Bomber, it looks as if we've now heard the last of it, as Korean website This Is Game has received confirmation from the game's developer, Neowiz, that the project was officially canned last November. The studio's representative stated, "Both companies have continually discussed to find agreeable points on quality, development time, communication and etc. Ultimately, both companies have agreed to stop the development of Rock Man [Mega Man's Japanese name] Online [early last] November." It's sad news for fans who were looking forward to going Maverick-hunting with some of their closest friends, but if the much-requested Mega Man Legends 3 can't even get through the pipeline, it shouldn't be too surprising that this didn't, either.

Mega Man Online has been blasted into dozens of pulsing white orbs. Korean site This is Game (translated by Kotaku) obtained a statement from developer Neowiz that the project was halted last November.Announced in May of 2010, we saw some unimpressive videos of the game later that year. Then came the silence. This was another attempt (that we know of publicly) by Capcom to turn a classic franchise into an MMO. The publisher previously tried to rush Ghouls 'N Ghosts Online, but that ended up being a dog and taken out back to the shed.

With dozens of games and collections, Mega Man has had quite the prolific run as a console game, and NeoWiz has been working on turning Mega Man into a MMORPG called Rockman Online (after the Japanese name for Mega Man). However, although there is no official word it appears that the project may have been shelved after internal restructuring in the company. Environments artist Kang Dong Hwa blogged that his current project was dropped and he is looking for other work. He also posted various concept art pieces that he'd been working on for Rockman Online over the years, usually a no-no for games currently under development.

The mysterious Korean MMO Mega Man Online has finally been revealed. The ten-minute off-screen gameplay video after the break reveals what we didn't dare hope for: it's actually a run-and-gun. You know, like a Mega Man game! Basically, it looks like a polygonal, sped-up Mega Man X. Not bad.

Rockman Online is a side-scrolling online game that mashes up the Mega Man and Mega Man X worlds. It's also only being released in South Korea. Luckily, then, this anime-style teaser video is cool enough for us to enjoy as a standalone work, because for us, it might as well be!

The acronym "MMO" has new meaning for Capcom, which has revealed that it is working on Mega Man Online for PC, this according to a report by GameSpot. The game is being co-developed by Korea's Neowiz Games, maker of EA Sports FIFA Online. There's a chance that MMO (see!) could be related to Capcom's recent Mega Man Universe trademark filing, but if it is, the company isn't saying. When contacted, a rep told Joystiq, "We have no comment at this time as Capcom does not respond to rumors and/or speculation." Whatever MMO turns out to be, we can only hope it doesn't take after Ghouls 'N Ghosts Online, Capcom's last (and unreleased) attempt at turning one of its classic IPs into a massively multiplayer experience. It was scary ... bad.
