Starting today and ending December 18, players can pick up downloadable copies of Capcom's landmark SNES platformer Mega Man X and bite-sized Game Boy series entry Mega Man for $2 each from Nintendo's eShop. The sale discounts the Wii U Virtual Console version of Mega Man X (regularly $7.99) and the 3DS VC port of the Game Boy Mega Man (regularly $3.99). Note that these limited-time sale prices are only available via their respective platforms, as Nintendo does not offer the ability to purchase eShop content via PCs. This week's sale is apparently the first of several "2 Games, 2 Dollars each, 2 Days" deals planned for the eShop, though details regarding future sales have not been revealed. The sale price for both games will remain in effect through 8:59 a.m. PST on December 18.

  • Dead Rising 3 includes Mega Man gear, if you can earn it

By now it has become series tradition, so it's little surprise to learn that Dead Rising 3 allows players to equip items straight out of Mega Man X. Slightly more surprising are the lengths you'll need to go to in order to earn your Mega Man X costume and Mega Buster weapon. In previous Dead Rising entries, most of the Mega Man-themed equipment could be found by raiding the right stores, but Dead Rising 3 demands players complete the game twice to earn the full ensemble. Once to earn the costume, then again on Nightmare Mode (which reinstates the classic Dead Rising time limit) to earn the Mega Buster. That may seem like a lot of effort for fan service, but if past Dead Rising games are any indication, the Mega Buster should be an obscenely over-powered weapon that destroys zombies (and most boss characters) in a single shot.

The eShop cup spilleth over this week, with lots of great new releases for Wii U and 3DS. The Legend of Zelda gets two links to the past in Oracle of Ages and Oracle of Seasons. Both games are available for $4.99 each until June 20, and use a password system to interact with one another. The 3DS also gets The Denpa Men 2: Beyond the Waves, and on June 4, you can snag a demo for Project X Zone, the bizarre Capcom/Sega/Namco mash-up RPG. Meanwhile, the Wii U Virtual Console picks up Mega Man X and Ghosts N' Goblins (not to be confused with Super Ghouls N' Ghosts, which came out earlier this month). From now until June 6, purchasing one of these games will get you the other for half price. Finally, there's a Just Dance 4 sale going on – you can pick up the game or select DLC for 30 percent off until June 4.

Nintendo recently posted a trailer for Mega Man X to its YouTube channel showing the game in action on the Wii U Game Pad. The SNES game will launch on the Wii U Virtual Console next week, on May 30, to be exact. Meanwhile, Super Metroid is still 30 cents, the service will see more Game Gear titles and Earthbound is coming this year. We're just saying, the Wii U's Virtual Console offerings are looking pretty hot right about now.

  • Armature Studio worked on an unreleased Mega Man X FPS, 'Maverick Hunter'

Armature Studio, the Austin-based developer formed from Retro Studios talent, was working with Capcom to create a new Mega Man X FPS, Polygon reports. Maverick Hunter would have kept X's weapon stealing ability and the platforming from the side-scrolling games, and added a deeper story and a new look, including armor by Adi Granov, who designed the armor for the Iron Man movie.Capcom canceled the project, like other recent Mega Man games including Mega Man Universe and Mega Man Legends 3, likely coinciding with the departure of series producer Keiji Inafune. Armature prototyped it in early 2010, Polygon's sources said. The site has five videos of the unreleased game, along with several gameplay details.Perhaps Mega Man didn't need this "gritty" reboot treatment, but on the other hand, it would have been a game, which is an increasingly rare thing to happen in that series.

  • Rumor: Mega Man X iOS hides 25th anniversary logo

According to Universal Gamer (translated), there's something of a surprise hidden in the iOS version of Mega Man X. Specifically, the site has uncovered a logo for the Blue Bomber's 25th Anniversary. Of course, just what Capcom plans to do for Mega Man's anniversary remains to be seen, with Capcom's Christian Svensson promising in October only that "things" are being planned. We can only hope the company will do a better job than it did with Mega Man's 24th anniversary last year. You know, when it cancelled development on every known Mega Man project.

It's time for another Good Idea, Bad Idea! Good Idea: Releasing a portable version of Mega Man X. Bad Idea: Releasing a portable version of Mega Man X with touch screen controls. And basing said title on the "feature phone" version of the game, instead of, oh, the SNES game. The game will be released this month on iOS (in Japan, at least) and features Game Center support and a challenge mode with 80 levels. [Image: Famitsu]

Hold all of your horses, padre, and don't get too excited just yet. See that picture up there? That sparkling, dynamically lit and exceedingly impressive Mega Man, torn from the pages of the upcoming Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 guide and punctuated by an emboldened "DLC" classification? So do we, and it's a lie. The blue bomber's Mega Man X variant won't be joining his sword-wielding comrade in battle, but rather will be providing said comrade with a fancy new outfit. That's right, that's costume DLC for Zero, and that sound you hear is the noise made by a hundred thousand simultaneously shattered hopes and dreams. No word yet on availability or pricing, or whether this means more deceptive DLC costumes await the game's fighters down the line. Now, if you'll excuse us, we have to clean up the remnants of our rage-torn office.

We've all been there: The animation tells us that the Mega Buster is as charged as charged Mega Busters get, but that robotic abomination needs to die so much that we keep on chargin', sometimes for two or three whole minutes. It never works, mind you, but Dorkly knows what we're hoping for.

  • Mega Man X2 receives rating for Wii Virtual Console

The ESRB has rated Mega Man X2 for Wii, meaning it's coming to the Virtual Console in North America at some unknown time. Traditionally, Mega Man releases hit the North American Virtual Console after releasing in Japan, but surprisingly there's been no word yet on a release there. Even more surprising, the ESRB rated Mega Man X2 an "E" for "Everyone" -- how that game got away with anything less than "M" for "Man Shooting Enemies with a Giant Arm Cannon and Shoryuken" is beyond us.

We didn't have to wait long for Mega Man X on Virtual Console. It was announced for Japan just last month, and it's on the Virtual Console in North America today! Of course, if you count all the time since the original 1993 release, including the years since the Wii first came out, it's a longer wait. WiiWare offers a Bit.Trip Core demo today, and on the total opposite end of the "crazy hardcore" spectrum, My Little Baby. DSiWare has a very cute submarine game, a piano teaching tool, and the third DodoGo puzzle game.%Gallery-121503%

  • Chrono Trigger, Mega Man X coming to Virtual Console in Japan

    by

    03.25.2011

Nintendo's Virtual Console release schedule for April includes just three games -- quite a contrast from the service's high points in 2007 and 2008, when the monthly additions would routinely top a dozen. However, even with just three releases, Nintendo of Japan manages to make us totally jealous, because one of those releases is Chrono Trigger. Nintendo (or Square Enix) has decided to charge a premium 900 Wii Points for the Super Nintendo RPG, a 100-point markup that is usually reserved for games "imported" from other regions, but used here basically because they can. That's still cheaper than the current (discounted) price for the DS version in the US. In case we hadn't achieved sufficient jealousy levels, the other planned SNES release for next month is Mega Man X, which will sell for the standard 800-point price in Japan. Also on the schedule: King of the Monsters 2 for Neo Geo.

You know, I told myself (and others) that I wasn't going to do this. But I can't ignore it. Today is the day that Mega Man makes his glorious return. Like a modern V-day, the blue bomber is coming home and completing his duty of pleasing the hardcore enthusiasts. With a rarely-seen level of excitement and anticipation being dispersed by the gaming community, we might as well have Mega Man slowly ride the streets through a ticker-tape parade seated on top of a convertible. I didn't want to stir the pot by declaring what the best Mega Man games are due to some sacred cows surrounding the topic. But ignoring honesty for the sake of peace and comfort would be committing a great disservice to us all. We decided to take a look at the highlights of the Mega Man series. Any title in the expansive universe was acceptable. But let's be honest: there's only going to be games from the original and X series (as if Mega Man Star Force stood a chance). And with any luck, today's release will find its way onto this list. Here's a heads-up: you might not agree with these choices. I did my best to provide arguments of why every game belongs on this list and in the order that it does. In the interests of intelligent debate, please do the same in your rebuttals. • Mega Man X & X2 ... at the same time

TASvideos has posted a clip of Mega Man X and Mega Man X2 being played simultaneously (using one controller). But there's a catch...The TAS community -- that's "Tool-Assisted Speedruns" -- is not about showing off, but rather, creating "movies that are beautiful to watch." Know that this clip was recorded using a controller wired into two SNES emulators and that the player used features like slow-motion and savestates to cast the illusion of a seamless playthrough in real time. So while it's not proof that an 'unassisted' gamer could play two different games with one controller, by exploiting emulation tools, the creator does show that two games can be played successfully using one set of button inputs, and without modifying the games.Do you find these sorts of projects fascinating? Is this games avant-garde movement? Or just a "silly idea"?[Via Digg]

  • Mega Man doubles up on the PSP

Capcom has announced that not just one, but two new Mega Man titles are PSP bound! Mega Man Powered Up touts a totally redesigned Mega Man look and feel and completely new gameplay options, including a level designer that will allow players to design their own stages. Mega Man Maverick Hunter X is a remake of the original Mega Man X title that first appeared on the SNES. The game builds upon the original, adding newly rendered 3D character models and new environments. Initially available in Europe (and via import elsewhere), Mega Man Powered Up will be available March 24 while Mega Man Maverick Hunter X will be available a month earlier on February 24.
